Michele, I haven't read "Sarum", but it's been on my list for a long time. So much wonderful literature to read, so little time! We're very close to Stonehenge, in fact the cobbler I found to repair a pair of my boots works out of a shop called "Stonehenge Shoes" in Amesbury, where Stonehenge is. There's so much history here it's overwhelming. This is a pic I took of the inside of Salisbury Cathedral last year. It has the tallest spire in the UK and can be seen for miles around. ![]() And I must mention your impeccable image choices! They're just superb!

Hi everybody. Sorry, not much time to write. Robert's family Christmas is on Saturday which has really messed me up with my own preparations for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Whooper Update: Since the weather does not look promising for any flights in the near future the team is taking a break. Four people will remain at the site to care for the cranes. The rest of the team members have gone home to be with family and friends for the holidays. Take care, Deb, Topa, and anyone else who is travelling. Happy Hanukkah and Happy Solstice, too. Thank you to everyone for all the gorgeous graphics. I'm in the midst of making Christmas pudding.

Cheryl, Happy Holidays to you and to your family....I know how crazy it can get with all of the Christmas celebrations....ours used to be too, but with the passing of my dad, and my nephew working as a Ranger up in Lake Tahoe, the celebrations have pared down considerably. This year as in last year, the only get together will be at our house on Christmas Eve.....and my sil and her family now spend Christmas up in Lake Tahoe......don't blame them.....they're treated to a beautiful "White Christmas"....can't beat that,eh??? In the past, we'd spend Christmas Eve with my family at my mom & dad's house, Christmas morning at my sil's house, and Christmas Dinner at our house with both sides of the family. The main thing now is just to enjoy each other when we do get together and appreciate our time together. Kris, Edward Rutherfurd is a writer much in the same vein as James Michener.....what I loved about Sarum, is he takes you on a journey that begins with the first men to arrive into the British Isles....and his depiction of the building of Stonehenge and the Cathedral is very, very interesting. I love historical fiction, so this book was right up my alley. Beautiful pix of the Salisbury Cathedral......

Kris your of the Cathedral is really gorgeous. I love those high Gothic arches and cavernous spaces, even though they are downright drafty in the winter. BrrrrYou can easily see why ordinary people were transported from their daily misery when they entered those edifices, particularly at Christmas to celebrate the birth of their Saviour. I can imagine the sound of the choirs echoing off the stone. Those amazing domes and arches are designed to take the load off the walls and that is why the windows can be so large with stained glass depictions...there is virtually no load on them. Such intricate designs from Medieval times have withstood the test of time. They are a true engineering marvel

Penny, I love your description of the Cathedral and it's Gothic Arches.....and how the parishioners must have felt when they attended services.....you have such a beautiful way with words.....and I think you are exactly right. When I was a little girl, our family would go to Midnight Mass (it was really the 8:00 service), at the Cathedral in Sacramento.....and I was completely struck with awe by the beauty of the services, the sounds of the full choir, the scent of Frankincense, and the castle like structure of the building. Was I trransported....oh, you betcha!!!

Before I moved to Toronto, my girlfriend insisted that I attend Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve at Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal, it was an absolutely magnificent experience and a total learning experience for me. This cathedral is very famous and visited by many tourists when in Montreal.![]() ![]() http://www.basiliquenddm.org/en/ |

Omigoodness Carole, the Basilica is the absolutely gorgeous!!! I would be doing so much gawking, I don't think I'd be paying attention to the service....d'oh..... Was the Mass said in English or in French???Topa, what an exquisite visitor you had today. That Egret captured with the Royal Oak as a background setting, is just beautiful.

Lily the Black Bear - Update December 22, 2011 Sounds, First Nation, and Another Den Cam ![]() Faith continues to make more sounds that we expected. This is the first time we’ve observed a non-pregnant mother with a cub Faith’s age, and we had not heard these vocalizations in the hundreds of dens we visited over the decades. Probably the bears went silent as we crunched up to their dens to tranquilize them, weigh them, take blood samples, etc. Now we’re learning undisturbed behavior, and we’re glad den-watchers are stepping up to record the behavior for the record. There is much to document about the six months that has had so little study. We will absolutely get another Den Cam going in the wild but are still waiting and hoping that Juliet will be the bear. She is the only reasonable choice for a bear that is almost certainly going to give birth, considering accessibility, cell phone signal, and solar power opportunity. Although Honey and Lucky are in the same den, they are not snuggled together like they were 3 years ago. Their den is much bigger than any den we’ve seen in the wild. If you’re interested in volunteering to record observations of behaviors in these dens, fill out this form. ![]() Last night we mentioned wanting to know more about diversionary feeding by First Nation People in northern Ontario. A Lily fan put us on track. We talked with Deputy Chief Gerald Mattinas of Attawapiskat, Ontario. His village is beside the Attawapiskat River 8 miles from James Bay. When natural food is scarce, black bears travel, and the broad river likely funnels them to the village. These are people who respect wildlife and refer to bears as brother. They have concern for bears. Deputy Chief Mattinas said they draw bears away from the village by putting their garbage in an unfenced dump a mile out of town. In years when natural food is scarce, they put seal carcasses 4 miles from town. He said they’ve been doing it for many years and they seldom have bears in the village. Some Native People on the shore of the Arctic Ocean do the same for polar bears. It’s a matter of having respect, understanding, and a desire to coexist. We’re always interested in results of diversionary feeding. The Bear Center staff said they are all caught up on orders. Some orders had been waiting for ornaments to come in to complete them. Those were rushed out yesterday even though the ornaments hadn’t arrived. Yesterday was the post office deadline to mail things in time for Christmas with fast shipping. So everything they mailed out yesterday went Priority in the 5-state area or Express in the rest of the USA. The ornaments finally came in today and were sent out separately. There is no hope for those to arrive by Christmas, so they went out normal delivery to arrive next week. In this season of family and friends, we’re thankful for all our Lily fan friends out there. There won’t be an update on Christmas Eve when some of are getting together for a church service, dinner, and then placing candles in the snow and on trees to see the magic of lights dancing in the darkness, brightening one of the longest nights of the year. It’s an old tradition for Sue. She has over 140 candles to put out this year, so it might actually be work. Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |
