![]() Blessings on this last night of Hanukkah to my friends who observe. Here it's still a "Christmas Bank Holiday", after Boxing Day and with everything back to "normal" tomorrow until New Year's Eve. I'll be glad when everything's all really back to normal and to "business as usual" since we're a bit isolated and with no family or friends nearby it can make for long days. And with Ed suffering an increase of his symptoms this week, including terrible arthritic pain, it's hard to feel overly festive. Penny, your post of your Ukraine Christmas repast had me remembering the Smorgasboard feast my Swedish grandparents always had at our Christmas gatherings. As a child many of the foods were unappetizing to me, to say the least, like Pickeled Herring, Head Cheese (no lactose involved, but Pigs are. ) but I have carried the tradition of some of them, and some in a vegan version. One of my favorites was the Kol Doma; basically stuffed Cabbage Rolls, that I found Soy alternatives to in the US but haven't yet found substitutes for the "meat" here. Farmor's Swedish Pancakes were wonderful on Christmas mornings and I made my best imitation of them this year for our Christmas morning breakfast with what was on hand, even though Ed couldn't dare eat more than a bite of it with his miserable intestinal condition. He appreciated it nonetheless! |

Kris we never celebrated the Orthodox Christmas at our house...it was only the fact my Mom wouldn't take down the Christmas decorations until after Jan 7th I have never made the cabbage rolls with meat...I either use ground round (soy subsititue) and/or fill them with a rice mixture like in the Holubtsi recipe in the link below ![]() This is a vegan version of the traditional meal: Recipes for A 12 course traditional meat-free holiday feast |

Penny - DH said that it was the best family gathering ever, he was so happy, so was I. The grandkids have grown up so quickly and the conversations were so interesting. They relly are a great group of kids The young boy in the plaid shirt was Jeremy's friend who had never been to a Hanukkah party and he really enjoyed himself, he gave me a big thank you hug when he left. A photo of me, I was too busy and the only one with a camera unless they were using their cellphones for pics.

Many people may have forgot about his time in the U.S. Army. He is the son of an Air Force General, and a accomplished Golden Gloves boxer, and he graduated from Pomona College with a B.S. degree, and then became a Rhodes Scholar from Oxford University. He joined the U.S. Army at the prompting of his father. After graduating from Officer Candidate School he attended and graduated from both Army Airborne and Ranger training in the very top of each class. He was selected for U. S.Army Special Forces Training but refused so that he could attend pilot training where he earned his wings, and became an accomplished U.S. Army helicopter (gun ship) pilot, and achieved the rank of Captain. He was about to be promoted to the rank of Major, and appointed to teach at West Point when he resigned his commission from the Army to go into music and acting. You can tell in this video that his time in the military means a lot to him. I won't give away who it is. You should just watch. I bet you will be surprised! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU-A7eqadho&feature=related |
