Just checking in here after the holidays. I just caught up reading chat for the past 3 or 4 days. It sounds like everyone has had a nice time. I hope all of you who are celebrating the 8th night of Hanukkah are having a wonderful time. I have so enjoyed reading everyone's holiday menus, seeing all the photos that have been posted, and all of the beautiful graphics. We had a quiet Christmas here - just the three of us, my mom, and my brother. I roasted a turkey, and had dressing, mashed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, fresh pineapple chunks, pickled peaches, a relish tray, and hot rolls. For dessert i baked a peach pie and a pumpkin pie...and of course we are all eating the cookies, peanut brittle, chex mix, and other things I had made. We have eaten way too much, and it will feel good to begin the new year with a lighter diet. Lots of snow around the state. I heard that nationally NM has some of the best skiing in the country right now and the Sandia Mountain ski area, just to the east of ABQ has a base of over 64 inches. It looks like our weather is going to moderate some, and it is supposed to be in the low 50's by the weekend. Weatherwise, we have had an awful December (more like January normally is), so I am hoping January will be nicer. |

I couldn't resist posting this very special stag Besides those amazing antlers he appears to have only 2 legs ![]() Heading to bed after Siobhan goes out one last time. It is actually warmer than it was earlier today -12C/10F and will be warming up for the rest of the week to a balmy -4C/24F, really astounding for this time of year here

Thanks Carole, did you notice we were using the same napkins ![]() Your weather is what we got hit with here overnight. Lots of scraping to do on the car windows today and some doors were stuck until the interior warmed up. Be careful if you have to drive before some sand gets put down. |

Lily the Black Bear - Update December 27, 2011 Jewel ![]() Jewel in den - Dec 27, 2011 We approached Jewel’s den saying the usual, “It’s me bear.” Tracks 5 feet outside the den showed that she was out yesterday when it was nearly 40 degrees. She was alert in the den but showed no alarm. We had visited her at this same den last year to remove her collar and she had come out to accommodate us. Though we didn’t see much of her this past summer, she’s familiar enough with us to not be scared. We’re old hat. This time, it was a brief visit to snap a picture to help determine how to anchor a Den Cam. ![]() Jewel's den - Dec 27, 2011 Although we haven’t given up on a Den Cam in Juliet’s den, we scouted out 2-year-old Jewel’s den to assess the possibility of installing a Den Cam there. A Den Cam in Jewel’s den will not accomplish what we need—which is to see how an experienced mother gives birth and cares for her cubs. Juliet is about to have her fourth litter and she is the best choice for a Den Cam at this time. Jewel may possibly have her first litter this winter. We plan to set up the Den Cam in the next couple weeks at Jewel’s den and move it to Juliet’s den if we get permission. We are still hopeful. With 3 cams this year we need all the den-watchers we can get! If you are interested in volunteering to record observations of behaviors in the den fill out the form here. We train! Meanwhile, as we see rumors and misconceptions being spread by a few to create problems for our research, we are doubly thankful for those who are here to watch and learn from the bears themselves and work for positive results going forward. Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |
