The Report Card on the Healthy Librarian's 2010 Simple Strategies for Staying Healthy and Happy - What's Working, What's Not, What's New for 2011?

"Here's why I feel full and can eat whenever I'm hungry. My belly can only hold 400 calories of high-fiber, high-nutrient plant-based food at a time! It's that simple."

Penny, that graph makes it so clear and simple for those who don't understand! A "no brainer": vegetables, vegetable protein, and vegetable fibre! No animals needed or involved, and much heathier for all. :ok:

G'day peeps, my Tuesday, working from home and its suppose to be a scorcher HOT today. Up to 40C. We did have a pretty warm day yesterday around 34C and a south-westerly wind came through in the evening to cool things down a little.

Good news about the Cspk BE, Carole. Love the the story about Maya's groomer date! rofl

Nice pics Kris and info about the Year of the Dragon. I especially like the "All Birds Welcome" :)^

Tiger isnt feeling too well again, trying to sort out the problem and will see if increased high fibre dry cat food and yogurt doesnt fix him up (Vet's suggestion).

Thanks for the FB security tips Penny

Rachel is off to an office job interview today, fingers crossed she gets it!

TODAY'S UPDATE FROM WCV ON NX :)^

January 3 update
NX was anesthetized on the morning of January 3 for another set of radiographs. Dr. Miranda reports that the avulsed piece of bone in NX’s injured shoulder is healing and appears to be reattaching. While NX’s left shoulder still appears to be “dropped” a little on the radiograph, Dr. Miranda is pleased with NX’s range of motion and how that shoulder feels. The boney changes in the humeral head appear to be unchanged from prior radiographs. The veterinary team will continue to monitor on future x-rays. NX’s eye injury is also resolved – Dr. Miranda says that the vitreal fracture in NX’s right eye has healed.

After recovering from anesthesia, NX was moved to one of the Center’s “C-pens” – a small outdoor enclosure for raptors that are not quite ready to be moved into a flight pen. Enclosures in this complex measure about 8’ x 16’ and are large enough for birds to hop and flap to different perches, but are not large enough for flight. At this point, the Center vet and rehabilitation staff do not want NX to over-extend her healing shoulder and wing by flying.

NX is scheduled for another set of radiographs on Monday, January 16. Pending satisfactory radiographs, she will then be moved into a flight pen.

 What the heck???? is all I can say. I like the two comments so far at the bottom of the article. Rules, rules, and more rules. Whose idea was this anyway to mess with OM? Grrr.

After 10 years of ultralight flights, FAA regulations have grounded this year's class of Whooping Cranes.

Cheryl - I am in shock :8O: What an absurd decision by the FAA to make right in the middle of the migration of an endangered species especially after 10 years. I am so angry  There are just too many laws and too much government. I hope that this gets straightened out soon so they can continue on their migration south :X:

Ozzie - You are really getting a hot spell after a not so great start to your summer.

Keeping :X: that Rachel gets the job.

Poor Tigsy, does he have a UTI that is bothering him and why isn't the vet putting him on medication. Hope this gets resolved soon.

- great news about NX that she continues to improve and has been moved to a larger enclosure :)^

- enjoyed your account of Maya's spa day, Carole :clk:

- Mia was spayed today, poor girlie. Wynn is lost without her. Jenny wanted us to wait until she was a year old so she would reach her full growth potential and be "the dog she was meant to be". Whippets mature later, maybe 14 months to two years but we felt like we were playing Russian roulette regarding her going into heat. She is staying overnight at the vet's.

-Posted Image Kath, poor Tiger, I hope the yogourt and dry special food will help :X: I could use some of your hot weather right about now.

I'm not very good about eating vegetables, never have been. I do like fruit, though, and we eat spinach salad often. Eggplant and beans, no. I'll try reading the article anyway. (hangs head in shame)

That seems to be good news about NX! So glad she is healing!

Deb...glad you find some time to do some caching. Hope things settle down for you a bit with not so much to do all the time.

Kath...hope Tiger is feeling better soon! :( So hard cause they can't tell us what is wrong. Such a guessing game. That is why is so important to know your pet!

Carole...loved the New Year's Eve pics of you and DH and of course, Maya! And sounds like you had a great time.

Penny...happy anniversary to you and Alan!! Hope you enjoyed your dinner last night :) Next yr. we will be celebrating our 40th!

LOVE the saw-whet owls!! They are adorable!

I spent the whole morning in bed yesterday just watching tv. Woke up to watch the Rose Parade, since I was alone and could watch it this year as no one else likes to, then I watched the tour of this year's dream home on HGTV that is going to be given to some lucky winner. Its in Utah this year so I won't be entering. Do NOT want to move anywhere its cold! As if I would ever win. Now if they built one here in So Cali on the beach I would enter as often as allowed! And pray every night to win! Anyway, it was fun just staying in bed. Afterwards, I drove down to the beach but since it was the last day for most people to have off it was CROWDED! So I didn't stay. Instead I drove over to a place in Carlsbad, just south of Oceanside, that sells mostly tropical furniture but they have some decor, also. I bought a few things for the guest room. One thing was a photobook made from palm tree leaves and such and I filled it with pics from our Hawaii trip several years ago. I put it on the shelf in the room.

Today, I drove back over to the beach. It was much sunnier today so it worked out great that I hadn't stayed yesterday. I am helping Jossy with a school project so needed some pics. Her project is based on the Flat Stanley books about a boy who's white board falls off his wall over his bed and flattens him. He discovers he can mail himself on many adventures so her class made themselves "flat" and mailed themselves to friends or relatives to take them on an adventure. I took Flat Jossylen all over with me and have chronicled our "adventures" together. So that is why I needed pics. It was a beautiful day here today, 73 degrees at the beach according to the board they have displayed but I think it was even warmer than that. Lots of sea lions playing in the harbor and lots of pelis on the docks. I wanted to get in the water with the sea lions and play with them  There was also some guy in a wetsuit and snorkle in the water that looked like he might be checking things out just under the dock but not sure what he was doing.

Jim is gone again for a couple weeks. *sigh* But he likes his job and his boss is awesome and the money is good so I can't complain. The benefit is that I will get some good sleep since he won't be snoring and kicking the bed next to me every night rofl

What?! Someone needs to call the head of the FAA and set them straight about this. Absolutely irrational.

Carole & Cheryl, Tigsy had infected anal glands, probably from stress and/or hurting his hips he cant go properly so the Vet initially put him on antibiotics and suggested the high fibre and yogurt. It worked but now it is back again. Not as bad, but I had reverted to more meat then the high fibre dry food, so back to dry food for him. Good thing he likes yogurt too bc Leo doesnt!

Hugs for Mia and for Wynn missing her <3

Lily the Black Bear - Update on Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Status quo

Posted Image
June and Lily

Everything seems usual in the two dens. Lily and Faith are mostly quiet except for bouts of suckling. A difference between these two and Lily and Hope is play. Hope liked to play and engaged Lily in play a lot in the den. We wondered if it was unusual, but Lucky and Ted were playing a lot, too. Now we see Lily and Faith and the lack of play, which we suspect is more usual. Lily may have been more alert last year in the weeks before giving birth to the cubs than she is this year. But, also, Hope was a firecracker.

Lucky is a firecracker, too. He was able to get Honey to play a bit in the spring after they denned peacefully together 3 years ago, but not now. Honey drags items into the den to play with, but she doesn’t seem inclined to play with Lucky. The two had words again today.

These are the impressions we have now, but the minute-by-minute data collected by the Den Watchers will help us to quantify the actual differences in play we are seeing.

Bear personalities differ. We’re fortunate to have seen the playful side of bears with Hope and Lucky, and the more serious side of bears with Honey. We certainly feel the playful side of Lucky when we go in the bear enclosure with him. He wants to engage us, sniff us, and take us down. He wants to play. You gotta love him.

What will we see with the Jewel Den Cam? Who is this Jewel bear? We hope she has cubs to bring her personality out and let us see another dimension in the world of bears.

Thank you for all you do.

This is typical of bureaucratic interference...wait until something is working just perfectly (or close too it) and then step in to mess it all up with a bunch of idiotic new 'rules' and possible fines because they all need to prove to somebody that they are on top of things and doing their jobs.

Did you ever notice how the bad guys get away with everything and the good guys get the 'book' thrown at them  :hair:

<::: Five Birds Of Prey Featured On New USPS Stamps <:::

Posted Image

by Beth Buczynski January 2, 2012

You’re not likely to see them at the bird feeder, but predatory birds, sometimes called raptors, are among the most breathtaking winged animals you’re likely to encounter in the wild.

Unlike many of their more delicate relatives, birds of prey are carnivorous and use their powerful talons to capture prey. Their exceptionally keen eyesight allows them to see small objects in detail, even from a great distance. As predators high on the food chain, raptors play an important role in maintaining the balance of nature.

Because they require vast tracts of land for successful hunting and nesting, human development is a large threat to the over 500 species of birds of prey. Loss of habitat means that surviving birds must hunt and build their nests closer to human populations where ATVs, pesticides, landfills and poaching post even greater threats.

To celebrate and help draw attention to these unsung kings of the sky, the U.S. Postal Service will issue a stunning set of three-ounce rate stamps by featuring bird portraits by illustrator Robert Giusti.

Appearing from the neck up will be the northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), osprey (Pandion haliaetus), and northern harrier (Circus cyaneus).

Preview the stamps below before they’re released on January 20, 2012:
