Hi everybody. We've been trying to have a quiet day here after picking Mia up. The vet said that she did very well. We have to keep her very calm, no play tussling with her brother or jumping on and off the sofa, no licking the area, etc.. It's going to be tricky for a few days. After five days we can start building up her walking and other activity very gradually. Things should be pretty good after ten days. That's a long time! We're lucky to both be at home to watch the two dogs and keep Mia resting. We paid extra so that she could have the laser surgery - less pain, cleaner and faster healing we hope. Maya looks so cute sitting on the sofa like a little princess. Thanks for your comments about the spaying, Carole.Jill, your sunset photo is gorgeous with all the layers and shades of colour in the clouds. I was hoping that I could vote for your boss' son, the firefighter, and the rescued cat as Photo of the Day but it wasn't a selection. It should be!! I haven't read anything more about the FAA issue with the ultralight pilots for OM. I did send a little note to Heather Ray but she didn't reply. Sorry that Rachel didn't get the job that she was hoping for, Kath. How is Tiger feeling today? We saw a news segment last night about a grey kangaroo attacking a little girl at a refuge in Australia. Her face and body were really scraped up. Karen, sounds like you had a great day at the beach. I'm jealous. Linda, I read about your eagle sighting during your nature outing the other day. I forgot to comment at the time. What a thrill, though.

Speaking of the cold ..... This watercolour painting of an iceberg that looked like a cathedral was just purchased by the Canadian Museum of Civilization. ![]() Rare painting of 19th century British voyage to Canadian Arctic returns Home A rare watercolour of a British ship exploring the Canadian Arctic has returned to Canada nearly two hundred years after it was painted here. The small work by Admiral Sir George Back shows HMS Terror anchored near a cathedral-like iceberg in the waters around Baffin Island, while a smaller boat is rowed nearby. LATEST UPDATE ON WCV CHESAPEAKE EAGLE January 4 update Dr. Miranda took a very quick “awake” radiograph on Bald Eagle #12-0001 today. Because this Bald Eagle was fairly alert and flappy, Dr. Miranda was only able to take one radiograph, rather than several different views. Radiographs revealed a pellet in the eagle — but not in its digestive tract. Based on the one radiograph, the veterinary team can’t pinpoint where the pellet is – they need a lateral view of the bird’s body to determine exact placement. Based on the shape and location of this pellet, Dr. Dave thinks that it’s likely that it is not a lead pellet — and is from another incident, unrelated to the eagle’s recent lead exposure. No additional pellets were found in the eagle’s feces today. Chelation therapy continues, and the eagle is eating several small meals each day.

Ozzie, we actually saw a dog do that during one of Matthew's soccer games. We always thought that if only we'd had it on video we could have submitted the clip to America's Funniest Videos. The dog took the ball away from one of the boys on the team who was charging towards the net. The boy didn't know what to do! The look on his face was priceless.

Lily the Black Bear - Update January 4, 2012 Your thoughtful comments Lily One benefit we get from the updates posted on Facebook is seeing the thoughtful comments below the updates—especially those from yesterday’s update. It’s gratifying to see the depth of knowledge, the sensitivity to what you’re seeing and hearing, and then getting your thoughts. Without your 2 years of observations, no one could make those connections. You and we are learning directly from the bears—not from reading misconceptions, not from the many warnings, not from making assumptions that make human sense but not bear sense. Unlike many, you question misconceptions and learn with us by watching real undisturbed bears doing bear things. Your statements about how much more we could have learned from Hope are well taken—so many times our learning has been cut short like that. That’s why we make every effort to learn as much as we can in the precious time we are given with each individual. We are looking forward to Lily’s next year, Faith’s next year, and what we can learn from a brand new (but related) bear, Jewel. And speaking of Jewel, there’s a need for more Den Watchers to record standardized minute by minute data as we bring the Jewel Den Cam online in 3 days. With 3 cams to watch our Den Watchers are spread thin. If you have an hour or so a day to spare, and would like to get involved as a den-watcher, go here. Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |

Bringing this over from CHIL just in case someone deletes it over there (I hope not): Just getting here, after midnight already. Want to share this news from my DS #2. He is the one in Fla. who raises puppies for the Guide Dog Assn. down there. He is currently working with his second dog, another black Lab. From David: This is an article about the new puppy I will be raising in Feb. I will be doing radio shows, TV, and other stuff with him. People can help name him. Because he's sponsored by the city, St. Petersburg, I'm going to vote for Petey, and also because that name is personal. (deceased Grandfather’s name) http://downtownstpete.ilovetheburg.com/article/City-Seeks-Name-for-First-Puppy/3349 http://www.baynews9.com/article/news/2012/january/365659/Help-name-St.-Petersburgs-%E2%80%98First-Puppy ST. PETERSBURG -- St. Petersburg needs the public’s help to name the city's "First Puppy." This "First Pup" will be a guide dog for a visually impaired individual. This adorable goldador (Labrador retriever/golden retriever cross) is part of Southeastern Guide Dogs' program and is being raised by a local volunteer family in St. Petersburg. The dog will make appearances at city events and official functions. The purpose of the contest and related activities are to help raise awareness for Southeastern Guide Dogs' 26th Annual Walkathon, to be held at St. Petersburg's Vinoy Park on Saturday, March 3rd. Visit http://www.guidedogs.org/walkathon for more information. Want to submit a vote? Anyone wishing to submit a name for St. Petersburg's "First Puppy" should visit http://www.stpete.org/firstpup. Mayor Bill Foster will review the names submitted, and the puppy and name will be introduced at a City Council meeting in February. Throughout the year, followers of the city's Facebook page will see updates on the puppy's training and official appearances as an ambassador of St. Petersburg. For more information about Southeastern Guide Dogs visit http://www.guidedogs.org. Close-up of Pup and place to type in puppy’s name.http://www.stpete.org/firstpup/ ![]() =================================================================== More info: http://downtownstpete.ilovetheburg.com/article/City-Seeks-Name-for-First-Puppy/3349 If anyone wants to vote, we would really appreciate your vote for "Petey". He was a wonderful Grandfather!! |
