CruzersWe are having a heat wave here Ok, not like in Ojai but this is unbelievable for January. It's +3C/37F heading for a high of +7C/45F and the little animals and birds are running around joyfully Won't last long though...tomorrow is predicted with a high of 1C/34F and then it's back to below zero again. Still, we'll enjoy it while it lasts

Hope that Mia is already feeling better Cheryl. That must be hard trying to keep her from jumping and playing with Wynn. With our last two females, the recovery was so fast it was hard to believe but they didn't have a playmate in the same house and they were both much smaller dogs. Ozzie I'm sure Rachel will find a job soon. It may not be her first choice but she's so young. Lots of time to get the career path started. Hope that Tigsy is feeling better too. for OM that the 'rules' are flexible enough to allow them to continue with the whoopers to their final destination in Florida. Still can't believe they were prevented from continuing

Canadian birds bring bald eagle back in U.S. Winnipeg Free Press - Print Edition Posted: 01/5/2012 1:00 AM biggerImage Joe Bryksa/Free Press Archives THE bald eagle -- the U.S. national bird and a species on the brink of extinction in the lower 48 states just a generation ago -- is now thriving again in the heartland of the American Revolution thanks to a series of transplants from Canada. New Jersey has become the latest U.S. state to celebrate the raptor's revival, with wildlife officials announcing a "milestone" achievement of 100 nesting pairs at the start of 2012, nearly all descended from the 60 eaglets imported from the bird's healthier Canadian habitats since the 1980s. Some of the individual birds introduced from this country may yet be alive and counted among New Jersey's current bald eagle population. Eagles have been known to live beyond 30 years in the wild. "The recovery of the bald eagle from one nesting pair in an isolated swamp in southern New Jersey in the early 1980s to more than 100 pairs today is a truly remarkable success story," state environmental protection commissioner Bob Martin said in a statement after the release of a report last month that found 102 pairs nesting in the state. The statement attributed the bird's recovery "from the edge of extirpation" to a ban on the use of the pesticide DDT and "decades of restoration and management efforts" by New Jersey wildlife officials, who "released 60 eaglets from Canada into New Jersey in the 1980s and early 1990s to rebuild the population." DDT was a widely used pesticide that caused fatally thin eggshells among eagles and other bird species in the 1960s and '70s. The DDT ban was spurred largely by the precipitous decline in bald eagle populations. |

Whooper Update: Date: January 5, 2012 Reporter: David Sakrison, Director OM Board of Directors Subject: 2011 ULTRALIGHT-LED MIGRATION ON HOLD Location: Ripon, Wisconsin The 2011 ultralight-led Whooping crane migration is currently on hold in Alabama while the Federal Aviation Administration sorts out an administrative issue involving OM’s pilots and aircraft. The FAA is working with OM to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. In the meantime, this year’s cohort is safely penned in Franklin County, Alabama, watched over daily by OM personnel. The issue in question is whether or not OM’s pilots are flying “for hire,” or, for the furtherance of a non-profit. OM aircraft are licensed as Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) which came into effect in 2008. FAA regulations prohibit flying LSAs for hire or as part of business activities. The FAA has begun the process of evaluating a waiver to OM, exempting its pilots and aircraft from that rule. OM has always maintained that its pilots are hired for a wide range of non-flying skills and duties, and that they volunteer their time as pilots. In 2010, the FAA Flight Safety District Office (FSDO) in Milwaukee investigated the status of OM’s flight operations and accepted OM’s explanation. We were told by the FSDO director that “no further action would be taken.” Based on that ruling, we began the 2011 season. In August 2011, a complaint by a former OM employee caused the FAA to inspect our aircraft, which passed with flying colors. In November a Letter of Investigation was sent to each pilot. After discussions with the FAA in December, Operation Migration voluntarily ceased any flying while the matter is resolved. We hoped that would happen during the Christmas break, but it is taking longer than anticipated. The FAA is in support of this project and is working hard to resolve the matter in our favor. We appreciate their efforts. We are also working with our WCEP partners to develop a contingency plan for completing the migration without aircraft, if necessary. An FAA waiver would be based on two main factors: safety and public good. OM has never had an aircraft-related accident and its contribution to wildlife conservation is well-established. If you would like to offer support for OM in this matter, post a comment on our GuestBook. Supportive comments will be collected and forwarded to officials at the FAA. |

Cheryl - Now I understand why this whole FAA fiasco with OM started. This former employee started the ball rolling in a very negative way and it snowballed into this migration delay. I still have hope that it will be resolved and these competent and dedicated pilots will be able to continue with the Class of 2011.

RTH first photo party guy
Penny, yes, it is taking both of us to keep things calm with the dogs. They are so used to going for walks together. Wynn can't understand why she is being carried outside by herself and he has to wait inside (then I watch her to keep her from jumping up while Wynn is taken out for a longer walk). We also have to keep an eye on 'no licking the wound' from either of them, no playing, no stairs, etc.. If this were a person it would be major surgery according to the vet. |

I thought so too. He/she was so cute this morning, dancing up a storm. I just hope the injuries heal and he can be released. I too am wondering who that employee at OM is, what a terrible troublemaker. I posted on OM's wall with a plea to the FAA
