Article in The Toronto Star this morning re whoopers and FAA Don’t fly away home? Dispute with FAA grounds whooping crane migration Published On Thu Jan 5 2012Email Print Rss ArticleDaniel Dale Urban Affairs Reporter A group of migrating whooping cranes has been grounded in northwest Alabama as the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration decides whether their human guides are allowed to fly with them. The guides are pilots with Operation Migration (OM), the unique Port Perry-based charity whose co-founder inspired the movie Fly Away Home. To teach the endangered young cranes the migration route to their winter refuge in Florida, OM pilots in crane costumes lead them there with ultralight aircraft. According to a statement posted Thursday on the Operation Migration website, this year’s group of cranes is now penned in Franklin County, Alabama because of a regulatory imbroglio. The statement said the unresolved question is whether the pilots are flying “for hire.” FAA regulations, the statement said, prohibit aircraft of the type OM uses from being flown “for hire or as part of business activities.” “The FAA has begun the process of evaluating a waiver to OM exempting its pilots and aircraft from that rule,” the statement said. “OM has always maintained that its pilots are hired for a wide range of non-flying skills and duties, and that they volunteer their time as pilots.” The statement said the FAA sent a “letter of investigation” to each pilot in November. It said OM has “voluntarily ceased any flying” until the issue is resolved. OM’s leaders could not be reached for comment Thursday evening. The organization, which is registered in both Canada and the U.S., was founded in 1994 by Joe Duff and Bill Lishman. Lishman began his work with Canada geese. Fly Away Home, the 1996 film, was partly based on Lishman’s exploits. |

Topa, I know you're here more than CHIL chat so wanted to post this over here for you![]() Sunday is a Full Moon, and one of the special ones of the year...a Wolf Moon. The Wolf Moon is the name given by Native Americans to a full moon that occurs in January. Native Americans chose this name because they heard hungry wolf packs howl outside the villages. This full moon is also known as the Old Moon or the Moon After Yule. Full Moon names date back to Native Americans of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquian tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is roughly 29.5 days long on the average, the full moon dates shift from year to year. In myth and folklore the full moon of each month is given a name. There are many variations, but in the USA the following list gives the most widely known names: January - Wolf moon February - Ice moon March - Storm moon April - Growing moon May - Hare moon June - Flower moon July - Hay moon August - Corn moon September - Harvest moon October - Hunter's moon November - Snow moon December - Winter moon |

TODAY'S UPDATE ON CHESAPEAKE EAGLE January 6 update Bald Eagle #12-0001 will receive its last treatment of chelation therapy today and Dr. Miranda will re-check lead levels on January 7. While the eagle appears to be brighter, it is still having difficulty standing. Dr. Miranda notes that the bird’s legs appear to be stiff, making the eagle a little wobbly when it tries to stand. This is likely a side effect of the lead toxicity. The Bald Eagle continues to eat well, and meals are gradually increased in size each day.

TODAY'S UPDATE ON NX January 6 update NX continues to rest comfortably in her outdoor enclosure. Dr. Miranda and team have been checking her daily — to monitor her appearance and also check that she has her carpal “bumpers” intact. Since NX has been keeping her protective bumpers on, the team has (fortunately) not had to catch-up NX since she was placed outside. The rehab staff are feeding NX one rat and one fish each day. |
