We've had more than seasonal weather for this time of year. Abnormally mild in fact. And we bought two big bags of salt grit that we may not need now. Ah, the Wolf Moon! It will be tormenting us with the orientation of our house and how the setting Moon and Sun shines fully on our big West facing windows, especially the bedroom. Sleep masks are de riguer! My camera is temporarily (I hope) non-functioniing, but Ed took these pics with his higher end one. These are through windows, in cases through several as in the Mouse shot which was through the kitchen window and the conservatory window beyond. This is a Greater Spotted Woodpecker on the Peanut feeder. We also have this adorable little Mouse who's storing Peanuts from the dish we set outside in the shrubbery behind the house under the smaller Bird feeder. The area behind the house is like a little protected aviary of Birds outside our back windows. It's so protected the local Cats don't even stalk there. The Woodpecker is on the front of the house but doesn't go to the smaller back area. Our Bird food budget is growing like the National deficit. ![]() ![]() We have so many of these little beauties; a beautiful Blue Tit (snagged pic). ![]() This is being called the "Best Aurora Photo Ever". Taken in Norway last month. It's "horizontally compressed" but still is incredible! ![]() I made my comments known on the OM blog page. |

Kris I know what you mean about the critter food budget When we were shopping yesterday DH asked me what kind of apples I wanted. Then he says "I guess Delicious because that's the kind the squirrel likes" . A few people nearby over heard and were Read your comment on the OM blog. I agree, Mr. Starr Ranch Owl should give his lady a break. He needs to go have a drink with the guys and let her get on with incubating.

Crane-o-rama!Tens of thousands of Sandhill cranes winter in the fields and wetlands of far southeastern Arizona each year, and they have their own festival: Wings Over Willcox, held in mid-January by the historical community of Willcox, AZ. This year is the 19th Annual WOW Festival, and it’s part of SE Arizona’s celebration of the state centennial. ![]() sandhill cranes standing in the icy waters of Crane Lake south of Willcox, AZ Photo: A.Shock A word of advice to those planning on visiting: although sunny winter days in this part of AZ can be comfortable, Willcox is at 4200 feet above sea level, so night-time temps usually dip well below freezing this time of year, and if it’s windy or overcast, daytime temps will be brisk. So if you plan to get out into the world on your trip here, dress for the weather! Wings Over Wilcox |

Hi everybody. The snowy graphic with all the white/ shades of white creatures is so pretty, Penny. Poor Siobhan in the snow. You must have to shovel out an area for her to use outside. That comment of Allan's about the delicious apples was hilarious. Thank you for the moon information, Cindy. I am going to save the monthly list. How much longer is your drive now, Deb? I think you will find it worth it since the work environment seems like it is going to be much more stress-free. Sunny, I believe OM has plans to take the chicks to a couple of nearby refuges if the team isn't allowed to fly soon. Kris, it is a pleasure to see all of your different backyard critters. Ozzie, hope you are able to have some fun at the wedding. It sounds like it is going to be a strained event, though. I hope Rachel is doing better soon. Good news that Tigsy is starting to be back to his normal self. Happy 100th Birthday to New Mexico! Carole, nice to see that the article in the Toronto Star gave some of the Canadian background about Bill Lishman and "Fly Away Home". That part of the story often gets missed in the American news. |

I have checked back in the Operation Migration Guest Book. There are now 16 pages of thoughtful and passionate comments addressing the situation with the FAA. Thank you again, eagle friends, for taking the time to comment. OM's Facebook page says that they are going to forward the comments to the FAA. Many of the Guest Book comments just had me . People really do care and want the young whoopers to be able to complete their migration. The Guest Book link is on the right side at the top on this OM home page. I'm posting it just in case somebody hasn't had the time to compose a comment because of the busy work week and would still like to do so. http://www.operationmigration.org/Field_Journal.html ![]() |

Lily the Black Bear - Update January 6, 2012 Gearing up for Jewel ![]() Jewel in den 10/22/11 Today, we depended totally on the den-watchers to record data as we started gearing up for tomorrow. The technology team is planning to splice together the cables from last year to get Jewel’s Den Cam online. We can’t wait for the new cable to arrive. Tomorrow is the day! We hope the team will also have time to check for the cause of microphone static on Lily’s Den Cam. We seem to remember static last year just before we lost all sound when a snowshoe hare chewed through the cable. Early update tonight because of a staff party at the Bear Center this evening. Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |

Funny cartoonCarole - Red tail really puts on a show! Have the video "Fly Away Home! Imorton - Happy Birthday for NM, Land of enchantment! CindyAZ - Love the howling wolf! My NM friends told me a legand. All the animals were gathered together and given a handfull of pebbles which they were to use to make their portrait in the sky (constellations). How ever the wolves partied and took a nap and when they awoke it was too late and they just scattered the pebbles so no portrait and that is why they howl at the moon! I was so impressed I actually bought a statue of a howling wolf! Penny - OH NO! Snow! Kris - So nice you can see those birds!
