This female had a fractured wing and is now getting some flying practice. The rehab center she's at doesn't have a long flight cage so they fly her with jesses ![]() ![]() Reminded me of Avalon who is looking so good in the training videos Jann has been posting. I always when she squawk talks to Mike 1/8/12 Avalon Foot Exam + Glove Training (7:59) |

Thanks Penny. He flies beautifully but the x-rays say there is still a problem. The one good thing, and I'm not a vet, he doesn't seem to be in any pain.

We have sap running in some trees here too Kris but apparently they will not be damaged too much No blooming flowers though. My little squirrel buddy is busy, busy, burying extra nuts because he can still dig them into the ground around the trees He's about to get a shock when Winter comes back with a vengeance in a few days Our highs will be around -17C which is a huge difference from +4C today.

Some bone breaks like the corocoid bone that NX had make for questionable recoveries for their chances to survive in the wild. I have some experience with this with a Crow that Ed and I rescued that had a fractured corocoid and the very well known Avian specialist who treated it said it would not ever be strong enough to survive in the wild because it's the equivalent of the human clavicle and takes a tremendous amount of stress, especially to fly any distance. Isn't NX the one who had the unsuccessful initial release and flew low into the trees? Much as we all want them to be able to live in the wild, I'd rather see them survive in comfort in a sanctuary than meet an untimely death after so much rehab effort. |

Yes she was Kris. NX is scheduled for another set of radiographs on Monday, January 16th. Pending satisfactory radiographs, she will then be moved into a flight pen. Right now she is in an outdoor enclosure still wearing her carpal bumpers to prevent any further trauma. If they have any doubts about her being able to survive in the wild they won't release her

Lovely Moon pics Karen. I loved seeing that pic of my DD and me again too. Thanks Penny, for posting it, I snagged and emailed it to Lori. That was a memorable day. Hope I can sleep tonight with this Wolf Moon illuminating our bedroom windows. Our bedroom windows face West and we get the full blast of setting Sun and Moon. Time for the sleep masks. |

Karen, that moon is so bright! Well done on your photos. Hopefully this will be the final year for you to have to drive to school in the dark (or even in the daylight ).

ANOTHER PATIENT AT WCV (IT'S IN SURGERY RIGHT NOW)Virginia Beach Peregrine Falcon PATIENT: Peregrine Falcon, #11-0023 LOCATION OF RESCUE: Virginia Beach, VA INJURY: Fractured metacarpals ADMISSION DATE: January 8, 2012 PROGNOSIS: Guarded An immature peregrine falcon was picked up on the oceanfront in Virginia Beach on Saturday, January 7 by an animal control officer and taken to permitted rehabilitator Lisa Barlow. Lisa found that the peregrine falcon, likely a male, had a wing injury and stabilized the bird before sending it to the Wildlife Center on January 8. Dr. Miranda performed a physical examination of the Peregrine Falcon when it arrived and found that the bird had a fresh, open fracture at the tip of its right wing. Radiographs confirmed that the bird had fractures of the major and minor metacarpals – essentially, the equivalent of the “hand” bones in humans. Dr. Miranda also found injury to the bird’s right eye. The veterinary team flushed the peregrine’s wound clean. While flushing, Dr. Miranda saw a very small fragment of bone in the fractured metacarpal, and removed it. The laceration on the falcon’s wing was sutured closed. Dr. Miranda splinted and bandaged the peregrine’s wing to keep it immobilized overnight. Dr. Miranda will be taking the Peregrine Falcon to surgery on the afternoon of January 9. She’ll be placing an external fixator on the fractured portion of the falcon’s wing. Dr. Miranda will insert several small pins into each end of the fractured bones; the pins are then secured together outside of the falcon’s wing with an external frame. Dr. Miranda doesn’t have much room to work with in this small area of the bird’s wing, but this will be the best option for keeping the fractures stable while the bones heal. ![]() |
