They Dance in the Waters... Some say, Hula.
I wonder if they dream?
Have you ever wondered if they share thoughts to and with us, as well?
... Kohola, the humpback whale.
Have a Wonderful, Happy Humpday!

"Our earliest poets were shamans. Today, as in the earliest times, true shamans... know the power of song and story to teach and to heal. They understand that through the play of words, the magic of the Real World comes dancing into the surface world. The right words open pathways between the worlds." - R.M., Dreamways of the Iroquois

2012 is a Leap Year
Happy Leap Year!
Why do we need Leap Years?
Leap Years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions
around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days – or 365 days,
5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds (a tropical year) – to circle once around the Sun.

Note: The illustration is not to scale.
However, the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year, so if we didn't add a
day on February 29 nearly every 4 years, we would lose almost six hours off our
calendar every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by
approximately 24 days!

Watch the web cam of the kitties that were taken off San Nicolas Island & are up for adoption- http://www.humanesociety.org/animal_community/shelters/ffa_wildlife_center/webcam/

This special colony of cats used to make their home on San Nicolas Island in the Channel Islands. Because they were non-native to the island, all of the cats were slated by government officials for euthanasia. That's when we stepped in. Now the cats make their home at the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona, Calif., where they have it all: food, toys, attention, and a place to call home.

Topa, what a beautiful image and quote about Shamen. <3

This little guy from Madagascar is the smallest Chameleon ever discovered; a Brookesia Micra. Posted Image

Hope those NBG pair get on with their family soon. :X: Dad sure seems to have the "fever". :P

I don't know if the news is covering the latest UK livestock disease where you all are, but we've been a lot hearing about the horrible new epidemic. It's called the Schmallenberg virus and it effects mainly Sheep by causing miscarriages and deformed Lambs. :'( It was brought here by Midges, a small fly type insect, from Europe and is spreading through the country. Sheep farmers are really worried, though it seems to pose no threat to people apart from possibly robbing them of their "Spring Lamb" dinners. :( One drawback of living in the countryside is the knowing that all the pastoral Sheep and Cows in the fields will likely meet horrible deaths at the hands of their keepers. :'( One commenter on an online news article makes a good point:

The next few weeks are the start of Lambing season and the full scope of the problem won't be known until then. Meanwhile, the only acceptable state any Lamb should be in is alive, with all body parts present, and with a long life ahead of him. :)

The tradition of "ladies' privilege"

Posted Image Posted Image
'An opportunity not to be lost.
I ask you with all love sincere
If this Leap-year
You’ll have me Dear?’

In keeping with the theme of nature gone awry, a whimsical tradition dating back at least four centuries (and still trotted out at four-year intervals by newspaper feature writers) holds that leap years confer upon women the "privilege" of proposing marriage to men instead of the other way around. The convention was (in literature, if not in reality) that any man who refused such a proposal owed his spurned suitor a silk gown and a kiss — provided she was wearing a red petticoat at the moment she popped the question. :D

Another tall tale (there's no reason to believe it's anything but) dates the origin of ladies' privilege to the 5th century, around the time (speaking of tall tales) St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. As the story goes, St. Patrick was approached by St. Brigid, who had come to protest on behalf of all women the unfairness of always have to wait for men to propose marriage. After due consideration, St. Patrick offered St. Brigid and her gender the special privilege of being able to pop the question one year out of every seven. Some haggling ensued, and the frequency ultimately settled upon was one year out of four — leap years, specifically — an outcome which satisfied both parties. Then, unexpectedly, it being a leap year and St. Brigid being single, she got down on one knee and proposed to St. Patrick on the spot. He refused, of course, bestowing on her a kiss and a beautiful silk gown in consolation.
