Sorry that I haven't been around much. I've had a lot of appointments and the bad weather driving has just worn me out. Whooper Update: The two DAR chicks and #19-09, their guardian, left with a flock of sandhills and have started their migration north. The nine chicks from the Class of 2011 remain at the Wheeler Refuge. |

Jeanne also posted this story about the planned destruction of barred owls by the US Fish and Wildlife Service ![]() The barred owl (pictured, left) could be targeted by the U.S. government to help save the northern spotted owl (at right). 'The Seattle Audubon Society was among the groups that consulted with the Fish and Wildlife Service before it made its proposal. On Wednesday, Shawn Cantrell, the Seattle society's executive director said "we need to figure out what is the level of challenge that the barred owl poses, and what are the appropriate actions we might take concurrent with other things, such as restoring the habitat of the northern spotted owls," He said he wouldn't be in favor of a larger removal program, at least not until an experiment answered those questions. He also said he believes loss of the northern spotted owls' habitat through logging is a bigger reason the species isn't faring well. Both the experiment and the wider program would require separate public review processes. The service is accepting public comment on the experiment plan for 90 days, and a decision is expected later this year. If the experiment happens, it could start next year and last for three to 10 years, the service says.' ![]() Read More Where is the link for the public comments I wonder?

Artsy...the audio is very interesting. http://www.kqed.org/a/forum/R201202291000 Download audio (MP3) ![]() Wildlife Chief Under Fire A majority of California Assembly members and Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom are calling for the head of the state Fish and Game Commission, Dan Richards, to resign after he was photographed posing with a mountain lion he killed in Idaho. It's legal to kill mountain lions in that state, but not in California -- and critics say the head of the wildlife commission is sending the wrong message. Should Richards resign? |
