penny they did a similar story on car repairs here a few weeks ago :(

I hear ya - we had trouble after 2 years with our dishwasher thinking we would have to replace it $$$$$$ - but the repair guy was fantastic - said it was bearings which this model was known for - too expensive to fix but it's totally useable - he said use it until it stops or leaks - well that was 6 years ago :) wish I had saved his specific contact info ........ :( phooey

We saw that one too ... charging for replacing filters etc. and NOT doing it :hair:

There was another show with Kris Hanson about people running child day care centers. That one was another huge eye-opener. I am just seasick that these people with criminal pasts can even be approved for licenses. Oh and in three cases, applications were made in the names of people who had already been executed for their crimes and they were all approved :8O:

There is something so fundamentally WRONG when people who have been convicted of crimes against children cannot be stopped from running a day care business. As the saying goes:

The law Sir, is an Ass

Golden Eagle at WCV - March 1 Update

This is the one which was mis-handled by biologists when banding :hair:

Posted Image :clk:

The Golden Eagle gave the vet staff a scare on the afternoon of February 29; when the staff checked on the bird in the afternoon, the eagle looked depressed — he was hanging his head and was no longer perched. The team examined the bird and provided additional pain medications and antibiotics, along with fluids. The eagle did not appear to be in respiratory distress, so the team did not feel that the eagle had to be placed in an oxygen chamber.

On the morning of March 1, the Golden Eagle appeared to be brighter and was once again perching in its crate. The team will continue closely monitoring the bird. The eagle is still being hand-fed by the staff.

Bear cub at WCV - March 1 Update

Posted Image :clk:

This is the cub who was found on a property in very underweight condition and with an abnormal right eye.

Over the past few days, the rehabilitation staff noticed that the young bear has been acting abnormally. When a staff member delivers the bear’s food, the bear is often spotted sitting near the door of the bear pen – and doesn’t run into the den when a human is around. Dr. Miranda went up to the bear pen with a rehabilitator on Thursday, March 1, and the bear behaved the same way.

Dr. Miranda attempted to startle the bear – a few hand claps and other noises – but the bear did not really react. When Dr. Miranda shook a nearby grate on the bear enclosure, the bear did move toward the den – while staying fairly close to the bear-pen wall.

At this point, the veterinary team isn’t sure what the issue is – there are a number of possibilities. Dr. Miranda will be consulting with a board-certified ophthalmologist at Virginia Tech on Monday – she would like the ophthalmologist to examine the photos of the bear’s eye to see if he has any opinions on what may have caused this eye issue. If the bear did experience some sort of head trauma, perhaps this has caused more than just an eye issue for the bear. Alternatively, the bear could still also be recovering from a prolonged time of malnutrition and poor health.

The team will continue to assess the bear regularly.

After a successful course of “mouse school”, Red-tailed Hawk #12-0003 has been cleared for release!

The hawk will be released at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 5 at Shenandoah River Park in Shenandoah, VA. This release is open to the public – for those who would like to attend the release, plan on meeting in the parking area at River Park just before 11:00 a.m. WCV staff member Lacy Kegley will be on hand for the hawk release.

This will be our first lead-positive bird release of 2012!

Hi and happy Saturday! It is really windy here but nothing like the poor people in mid-America are dealing with.

Penny, darn, we forgot to watch that Marketplace presentation. Thanks for the synopsis. We use a plumbing business that actually installed our pipes and so on when we had our house built. They have been very reliable so far. Garage door issues are another matter. I think some of them are real crooks. We finally gave up on our garage door and bought a new one after years of issues with it jamming or coming off the rails and twisting, it was awful and dangerous. It always cost so much to get it repaired. One guy charged me for a 'safety check' after he had fixed it. I am too gullible - still regret not realizing there was no need for it. Plus they charged travelling time from out of town, hmm.

I hope the golden eagle improves and they find out how to help the bear cub. Good news about the hawk.

Jill, I like the little Snoopy patches that you added to the orange squares. I would think that many of the foster children have never been given something hand-made with love especially for them. It is a cute and cheerful gift. Please keep sharing your quilts with us as I really like seeing them.

I had physio yesterday so I'm a bit sore and tired today, will try to check in later. Ian and Allison are away on a cruise so we are checking on their house. They picked a good time to be away.

Whooper Update:

Date: March 3, 2012 Reporter: Liz Condie
Subject: HOME AGAIN - ALREADY! Location: Main Office

If you are not in the habit of visiting Journey North's excellent website, (updated regularly by OM Board of Directors alumni, Jane Duden) then this is the perfect time of year to adopt the practice.

When we checked the Journey North site yesterday we learned that two unidentified cranes from the Eastern Migratory Population (EMP) had completed their Spring migration back to Wisconsin by February 28th. And it appears that others in the EMP likely aren't too far behind. The pair consisting of 1-04 and 8-05 along with Wild1-10 were in Douglas County, IL as February drew to a close. At the same time, the North Carolina wintering pair of 28-08 and 5-10 had made it as far north as Bartholomew County, IN.

Already back on their summering grounds?!? Completing their northward journey in February gives a whole new meaning to 'spring' migration. Between all the short-stopping by the EMP on their journey south and the evidence of early departures for their return trip, this is undoubtedly going to be a year for the record books.

sooooo sad about all the people losing lives and homes the last few days because of the crazy weather - my family was far enough north so some thunder lightening but well - my DB had a near hit with lightening though - got his attention indeed :o but all's well

and the boy at the school .... I will never understand

topa thanks for the thought about cam on phone - while riding home from store I pulled up TH and voila - now I have a short cut and can have a look any time I'm away from the computer and lonely for an eagle nest :)

Penny - sorry I missed that show. "Caveat Emptor or Buyer Beware" is the best way of describing how we should be aware of who we deal with in purchasing a product or having it serviced. The best way to find an honest and reputable serviceman is to ask a friend or neighbour. I have really been lucky, only 2 service people in 36 years of living in our present home. I've heard horror stories of people being told that parts are necessary when they aren't and then those parts were replaced with rebuilt parts or secondhand ones. Same thing with a car, find a reputable mechanic and get a second opinion if necessary. I really hate being taken advantage of so do your homework before doling out the big bucks $$$$$
