In the years surrounding the turn of the 20th century, women were entering the workplace in larger numbers than ever before, thanks largely to the expansion of nineteenth century industrialism. The jobs they filled were segregated by gender and were mainly in the areas of manufacturing, textiles and in domestic services where working conditions were dismal, and wages even worse. The political climate was one of turmoil and change - Socialism and Trade Unionism were coming into being as working people the world over sought to improve their status and working conditions. Additionally, Women's Suffrage, the right to vote, was a still un-realized goal.

The first Women's Day was held on the last Sunday in February 1908, initiated by groups of American socialist women for the purpose of demanding the Vote and to call attention to the political and economic status of women. It continued to be held on the final Sunday in February through 1913, when celebrations of the day began to shift to the first Sunday in March. When the Russian Czar abdicated in 1917, the provisional Government granted women the right to vote - this took place on February 23, according to the Julian calendar then used in Russia, but on March 8 according to the Gregorian calendar used by most of the rest of the world.

In the ninety-plus years since its inception, International Women's Day has formed a rallying point for coordinated efforts by the growing international women's movement to call for women's rights and increased participation in the political and economic process. It is also a time to reflect on progress made, and to commemorate the lives of women who have played courageous roles in the history of women's rights.

Happy Women's Day!

Poor Ma and Pa Norfolk, they have had an unbelievably bad night and that intruder is still there bothering them. Something tells me this still isn't over :(

Reese Lukei:

After reviewing the videos of the intruder eagle yesterday, photos from Shelly Fowler, and file photos of female #2, I have determined the intruder was not female #2 trying to return to the nest. The intruder yesterday has a few dark feathers in top of head and some white feathers in underwings which female #2 did not have.

Both NBG Eagles left the nest abruptly earlier and Pa is now back holding down the fort
He is sofily peeping while waiting for DT to get back.

He has a lot of work to do to repair the right side of the nest that was damaged in the fight.

At 8:08 AM EST an intruder tried to enter the nest from the top right. Pa mantled his wings and prevented it from landing. This is just unbelievable!!!

Pa was also attacked around 3:00 AM this morning while it was still dark by something that came right at him. He went after it and DT was screaming the whole time :o
They hardly got even an hours worth of sleep last night.

The Norfolk situation is so distressing! :'( The Dad just had another altercation wth the intruder. This comment was just posted by Shoebutton♥:
"Report from ground observers/local photographers -

Another altercation between the male and the rogue eagle....we understand that the male locked talons and is now at the 2004 nest tree preening.."
.

Prayers for the nesting pair that this intruder goes away before doing any more harm. :X: The female's whereabouts are unknown and have been for some time.

Penny - Hopefully the weather will improve a Sequoyah. The eaglets are just to big to be brooded by mumbrella. :rn:

I'm really concerned about the Norfolk situation, hopefully the intruder will disappear and leave poor Ma and Pa alone. :X:

I just love that eagle quilt, a real work of art and love.

We will be leaving breathtaking
Carmel By the Sea later today!
I did not put my camera down
for more than 5 minutes yesterday.
Carole the Pebble Beach Golf Course
Is open to the public so DH wanted
to have lunch there, DH parents were
both golfers. I took some photos of
the inside of the Lodge and the course.
Everyone was so nice to us even tho
we were dressed in hiking clothes. We
had just finished the Los Lobos Preserve
Trail and decided to start the 17 Mile drive at
Pebble Beach Golf Course for lunch.

I could
write a book about yesterday but when
I get home I'll post the sideshow and videos.
I'll make popcorn and we can have movie
night. ;)
BBL time to go find a coffee shop.
