Carole, amazing pics of the Sandhill nest and egg! I am so shocked and disgusted at the permit issued for the Arapaho Tribe to kill 2 Bald Eagles! Where do they draw the line in their "religious imperative"? At children? Women? Dogs? Why aren't the Repository remains sufficient for their needs?? For a supposedly "spiritual" culture, intentionally murdering a protected Bird, or any other creature for that matter, is a barbaric, pseudo macho act that should be deplored, not condoned by the US government! I smell a financially motivated Rat! They've played the "sovereignty" card too much! The collective guilt trip on 21st century Americans for "privileges" like this is past it's Sell by Date. Grow up and assimilate, and stop living off government handouts! This is the 21st century and humans in general have decimated the wildlife populations enough! |

Kris this is what I posted on the MSNBC story comments: "This is just unbelieveable!!! The Gov't protects Bald Eagles and now they give permission for one tribe to 'take' 2 ??? How many other tribes are going to jump on the bandwagon after the floodgates are opened? Every year many eagles end up in rehab after being shot and maimed to the point where they can never again be released into the wild. Only 50% of young eaglets ever make it to maturity as it is. If people are 'allowed' to run around shooting at eagles to get the two they need, how can it even be allowed to occur? How many are going to get shot until they get the ones with the right feathers (immature or adult)? The bald eagles are currently laying eggs in many nests around the country. Some of them already have hatchlings in their nests. If an adult from a nesting pair is killed, then the likelihood is their eaglet(s) will not survive to fledging. This decision is the worst thing I have ever heard made by the people who are supposed to be the overseers of a National symbol and protected species. If this is how they conduct business as usual their mandate should be removed and they should be replaced by an agency that has the welfare of the birds and animals at their forefront. I also have a huge issue with the 'religious purposes' excuse because it seems many tribes have 'adopted' this custom and need the feathers for powwow dance costumes, which was not at all a tradition of early Indian tribes in the US and Canada. As a member of the IWS Bald Eagle restoration program on the Channel Islands in California, this decision came as a total blindside to the sensibilities of all the people working to establish successful breeding pairs of bald eagles as they rebound from near extinction. Please prevent this terrible decision to allow open season on bald eagles. Just because they were removed from the endangered list does not mean they need to become a hunted species. They need to be protected, not persecuted." Where do I sign a petition against this decision?" I also sent EM's to both Senators from Wyoming and the USFWS office that was responsible for making that decision ![]() Jennec posted their contact information: Contact the Wyoming senators: Sen. John Barrasso E-mail: E-mail contact form for Sen. Barrasso Phone: (202) 224-6441 (Wash DC office) Sen. Mike Enzi E-mail: E-mail contact form for Sen. Penny, wonderful impassioned comments that I hope are heard! I'll do what I can myself with emails and petition signings to try to stop this unconscionable decision too. Your letter is so excellently worded and makes all the most important points about the danger to the new season of nestlings and the overall survival of the species that I hope it helps bring attention to the bigger issues. In this day of such disrespect to the individual significance of diverse cultures I can understand how the Native Americans have held on to this icon of their historical culture. But in the light of evolving times it seems they should take a more compassionate view of the role Eagles have in the balance of existence, and to their right to be allowed to survive despite the "imperatives" of their so called "spiritual" rituals. |

Penny - So beautifully written and strong in its content Kris - Your comments are so true, times have evolved and spiritual rituals involving murder of an endangered species should not be allowed. If the Bald Eagle is so sacred an emblem to the Native Tribes, honour and cherish it, don't kill it. Repository remains are available for their so-called rituals. |

This is the e-mail I sent to U.S.F.W a few moments ago.... I was not polite, nor diplomatic. I am steaming with U.S.F.W , the so called protector of our lands, wildlife, etc. This stinks to high heaven! I sent this to the e-mail address that Jeanne kindly provided us. TO ALL EMPLOYEES OF U.S.F.W. , THE GRANTING OF PERMIT TO KILL 2 NORTH AMERICAN BALD EAGLES ...THIS IS ABSOLUTELY APPALlING! THIS DECISION BY USFW IS DERELICTION OF DUTY AND BETRAYS OUR PUBLIC TRUST IN YOU! YOU ARE COWARDS TO BEND TO THIS REQUESTED PERMIT. I SMELL A MONEY PAY OFF HERE....NOT JUST FOR THIS DISGUSTING DECISION, BUT THAT THERE IS SOMEBODY, WHO ARE PAYING SOMEBODY OFF, WITHIN USFW ,TO GET THIS PERMIT TO OPEN THE DOOR TO BIGGER DESECRATION OF THIS PROTECTED BIRD AND OUR NATIONAL BIRD!! THE NORTH AMERICAN BALD EAGLE IS SACRED TO MILLIONS AND MILLIONS, NOT JUST TO THE NATIVE AMERICANS. IF SOMETHING IS SACRED, YOU DO NOT KILL IT! IN MY OPINION, YOU ARE DUPLITIUOS IN THIS SINISTER PERMIT REQUEST AND YOUR GRANTING IT. CHANGE IT! U.S.F.W. HAS GONE TO COURT TO PROTECT BEFORE--WHY HAVE YOU NOT IN THIS CASE? I SMELL A RAT! G'day peeps, my Thursday, at the office today, clients and some work to clear off the desk. Tomorrow I want to start the bathroom paint job, its peeling off the walls. My fault on the original paint job, I didnt seal it properly. Fortunately most of the bathroom wall is tiled so there is very little painting (scraping) to be done. Sailing was good yesterday, we came in 3rd out of 15 boats! Captain Roger is away for the next couple of weeks so I have to find something else to do on WEdnesday, comment on allowing Native NoAmer Indians to Kill BEs. We have a similar problem here in Oz with Sea Turtles which are endangered. The Aboriginals are the only ones allowed to kill them, not for sport but for food. The way they are traditionally killed is awful (I will spare you the details), but in very remote areas, this is a food source. Not like BE situation in America where they should be worshipped instead of killed! LOVE Maddie (the coonhound, snagged, thanks!) Very sorry for your loss Karen, very sad. {{hugs}} I looked up the info on the Crane eggs too! 30 days.... hmm.have to post this picture after receiving an email from Sara Oberman containing information on the auction of Trigger, Roy Rogers & Dale Evans memorabilia. Brought back some lovely memories, My mother sent this card to Rachel many years ago, I have pinned on my bookcase, I love it so much ![]() |

Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE March 14, 2012 Heat! ![]() Victoria's glowing eyes behind Jo! - March 14, 2012 Record high temperatures are being set all over the region this week—some breaking records set over a century ago. Duluth was 33 F above the average for this day at 66 (68 by one report). International Falls set a record at 56. The high temperature for Ely was 66 F, beating the old record of 51 and the average high of 32F. We saw the first mosquito—a month earlier than usual and over 2 months before they usually become common. ![]() Jewel's family snoozes - March 14, 2012 The heat raised havoc with Jewel’s Den Cam. Between the blazing hot sun and the pilot light in the equipment shed, the temperature inside rose enough to shut down some of the equipment. We had planned for the cold by thoroughly insulating the den shed. We never thought it could get too warm. Once we figured out heat was the problem, we turned off the propane and opened the door. The equipment regained function. We’ll leave the propane off for now. ![]() Jewel paws at cam tube - March 14, 2012 Jewel managed to 'rearrange' the Den Cam tube today—great view of roots hanging from the wall of her den. We're hoping she goes out to eat snow soon and nudges it back in place. A video of yesterday's highlights in Jewel's den is on YouTube. ![]() Jo has been out raking - March 14, 2012 We didn’t hear of Jewel or Lily coming out today, but when we checked Jo and Victoria’s den, tracks showed they had been out raking newly exposed leaves into their den, which is in a road culvert. The pictures show the raked area, the culvert den entrance, and Jo sleeping inside on the dry bedding from last fall and the new wet leaves she just raked in. We didn’t alert her by talking and tried to be quiet but we were still surprised the flash picture into the den found her still sleeping (with Victoria’s awake and glowing eyes peering over her). We can’t see her collar, so Jo has likely removed it like Jewel did. ![]() High-stepping Herbie - March 13, 2012 We haven’t heard of any bears roaming in this region, so we suspect the extent of bears leaving their dens is what we are seeing—brief jaunts to eat snow by the entrance or to rake in more bedding as it becomes available where the snow has melted away. We put a Trail Cam (donated by a Lily Fan, thank you) at Jo and Victoria’s den to get more information on time and frequency of emergences and what they do while they are out. We hope their investigation of the new object is gentle Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |
