Carole, how amazing it must have been to witness the Crane laying her egg! :><: Beautiful pics of the new Mom. <3

Topa, how exciting to be planning a Baby Shower! We'll look forward to "Virtual Cupcakes". :Yum:

Penny, I just signed the petition. Thank you for the link! :ok: And, since you asked about our "Cat Barriers", if you promise not to laugh I'll share them. "Rustic" thought they may be they do seem to work very well, are easy to step over, and blend in with the environment too. Ed fashioned bundles of cuttings from the garden topped with thorny Rose trimmings and long prickly Blackberry vines that are abundant all around. He put them at several access points to the patio: including the walkway up from the steps to the canal where we've caught Cats waiting to pounce on the Birds (first pic), and bordering an open grassy area between us and the hedges next to the canal that they would use for access (the thorny fence in second pic). The Cats probably can still jump them if they tried to but they can't sneak up and stalk now, their pouncing over them would give the Birds enough warning to flee. And since installing them the motion sensing light on the patio does not get triggered in the night like it used to. I'm chronically awake for an hour or two in the wee hours every night and the light would always come on at least once from Cats patrolling the patio while I was awake. I've only seen it triggered once since the barriers went up. :)^ The night patrolling Cats are looking for Rats and Mice and we don't want to see them caught either. Ed was inspired by the Masai's use of Thorn bush enclosures to protect their livestock from the Lions. The Birds seem to feel safer too. :D

Those cat barriers are so ingenious Kris :><: :><: :><:
Now I know what I'm going to put under my front windows to stop the few neighborhood cats who are using it for their potty stations :D

How do the ducks avoid the barrier at the steps to the water? Are they just flying over it? IMNTK

You should frame that :clk: of the mallard pair in your foggy garden yesterday. I hope you get to see what the offspring of the domestic duck and the mallard look like when they are older. Should be an interesting mix :chk: Designer Ducks

Penny, yes, the Ducks just fly over them, or walk over the raised garden beds around them, but they've even landed on the thorny bundles and with their rubbery feet they don't seem to mind or have any problem, though I worried about that at first. The other smaller Birds like to perch on them and have no apparent problem with the thorns. :ok:

:}^ HeatherM I don't know for sure how far away the old nest is from the new one at Chinese Harbour that the PH pair is using. I do know the original nest was guite a bit farther inland, so the eaglets were left alone for longer periods of time while K-26 and K-10 were fishing and now they are using a nest very close to the water.

See this IWS Update for the news about when the :<<o>>: crew finally found them.

If you need to know more, just go to What are your Questions and ask it there :ok:

Hi Heather :}^ I can't tell you how far the original nest was from the one they are using now but here is a map of SC Island. In the question thread perhaps you can ask Dr. Sharpe. Here is the link....

G'day Peeps, its my RAINY Saturday and St Patrick's Day. It also marks Bob's mother's birthday (who never drank alcohol). Apparently a lot of her family were Army Salvos. Posted Image
Had a restless night myself, not sure why but it was very hot and humid at midnight with a lightening storm brewing but later cooled off with the rain. I got up at 2am and found Tigsy curled up in the kitchen sink!!! :8O: fortunately it cleans up easily!

Glad you are feeling better Anna

How cool that you saw the 2nd Crane egg being laid Carole! The juggler guy is funny!

Look forward to 'attending' the baby shower via your photos Cathy, and hope for a nice day.

awww, Maya! <3

Lovely spring garden pics Kris. Very creative cat fence too, I like it!

Here is a really interesting article about using frogs to fight superbugs.

Jewel outside her den.............................Herbie and Fern alone in den - March 16, 2012

Today, activities ramped up at Jewel’s and Lily’s dens. Jewel left her den several times today to eat the snow which is receding further and further from her den. The first time she left, she nicely aligned the camera so we all got a good look at Herbie and Fern. They can’t even walk yet, but they seemed to be trying to play with each other. The next time Jewel left the den she shoved the den cam tube far out of her way and gave us the current close-up view of the den wall. I think we’re stuck with that view until we can visit the den on Sunday. We’ll switch back to the outside camera tomorrow morning.

How far will this cable stretch? - March 16, 2012

Lily and Faith left the den mid-morning. Lily spent a good deal of time investigating the den cam equipment. We held our breath as she chewed on the microphone cable—but we still have sound… for now. They spent a lot of time lounging around near the den in good view of the PTZ camera—at least until Lily stood up and pawed the camera casing and smeared the clear protective casing. We need to remember to clean that on our next visit. Several times Lily and Faith wandered out of sight. They may have been searching out patches of snow to eat—there is no snow anywhere around the den. After spending most of the day out, they went back in their den for the night.

Faith stretches back - March 16, 2012

A video of Lily and Faith outside their den today is posted on YouTube.

Not all bears are active, though. We checked on Donna and her yearlings and didn’t see any clear sign that they’ve spent much time out. We could have missed clues, though, because there is no snow remaining around their rock den to show tracks. But often there is sign in the form of newly broken branches or fresh claw marks from climbing nearby trees. We saw none of that. We put up a trail cam to record data. Donna’s den is miles into the woods on narrow 2-tracker forest roads, and we were able to drive there—almost unheard of at this time of year. Donna didn’t have a collar on, so we have to get that back on her soon—before she and the yearlings begin to roam.

Lily nursing Faith - March 16, 2012

At the Bear Center, the three bears were more like lethargic Donna than Lily, Faith, and Jewel. Honey is calm in the den by herself while Lucky is in his snow-free bed in the woods where he has spent time before. Ted was lethargic in his den.

The ‘Bear Facts and Fun’ group formed to spur discussion on Lily’s Facebook page and the Pond Chat. They have 3 goals.
*EDUCATION: To post facts about black bear behavior and direct people to favorable links
*GAMES/FUN: To make Lily's Facebook page FUN in the process of learning about black bears
*WELCOMING: Make sure new fans feel welcome to Lily's Facebook page and assist anyone who might have any questions

Thank you for all you do.

Dawson has grown into such a handsome ambassador for the South Eastern Guide Dogs :)^

Your DS must be so proud of him and the role he played in training him for his 'life's' work :chk:
