![]() In the Northern Hemisphere, today marks the Vernal or Spring Equinox when the is directly above the Equator and the day is really longer than the night! The word "equinox" means "equal night," and it refers to a time when the period of daylight and the period of darkness are equal, amounting to 12 hours each. In reality it refers to an instant in time at which the Earth is tilted neither toward nor away from the Sun. Since the Earth's tilt relative to the Sun is constantly changing, the 12-hour symmetry can be only approximately true anywhere. More Spring Equinox Facts |

Good Morning and Happy Spring Cruzers ![]() You may wonder what I am doing up at this extremely early hour. The thumping screaming episode that I described last night had a part 2 that started at 3:00 AM !!! Siobhan ran around barking hysterically while it continued. I grabbed a flashlight and shone it on two rather large furry somethings that were caterwauling on the first story roof overhang. What a noise Still not sure what they were but I'm guessing big grey squirrels, I'm not even sure if they are nocturnal If they aren't, then it must have been smaller raccoons. What a way to start the first day of Spring See you after the sun comes up

Nest News gets cuter every day. Sorry about the chick in the Sooner Lake nest. That nest is very tiny. Happy First Day of Spring. ![]() Silani Wahlgren FB friend and vegan chef made a kitty palace for her kitties. "This is the indoor lounge area, on top of their "bedroom". ![]() Happy Vernal Equinox and first day of Spring! Sorry to be a bit absent this week. Ed's been feeling especially unwell and I've been a bit under the weather too. Probably more due to worry and stress than anything. Penny, your Eostre graphic with the boxing Hares is just what we saw last week! It's the season of the "March Hares" that can be seen "boxing" for dominance in the remote fields like we visited recently. This is the road alongside the fields where we saw three large Hares boxing, well two were boxing and another was standing by, but they ran when our car approached. You can see our car in the distance to the left of the bend in the road. We'd gone to a nearby chalk quarry that Ed wanted to fossil hunt in. We found a couple small ones, a Sea Anemone and a small Clam shell, but he forgot to pick them up at the car when we left. His illness makes him forgetful. ![]() Carole, your Nest News is such a prodigious effort, and wonderful to enjoy. Except for the occasional sad news like the Sooner chick. I found this sweet capture on the Norfolk Blog. The new female had stretched her wing out seeming to hug Dad. ![]() Our garden, front and back, is a virtual Daffodil extravaganza right now, making it seem like Spring is really here. The weather has been in the 50s and I even had to shed a layer of thermals today.

Kris. Thanks for explanation of the boxing hares I've seen it in wildlife programs but not in 'real life' and was wondering why the hares were shown this way in the graphic I posted. Makes total sense and they don't make loud screaming noises while they are fighting Our temps have taken a sudden nose dive...it's only 8C/46F here now and we already hit our high of 11C/52F earlier today. That is over 20 degrees colder that yesterday ![]() |

Penny. Yes, they really do stand up and "box" with each other like that! It's a yearly phenomenon and the source of the "Mad March Hare" images. In a bit of good Breaking News I just read that Wales has decided not to proceed with the planned Badger cull. Environmentalists and Badger protection agencies have been fighting to stop it. I don't know if this means it won't happen in England, but the horrible plan was to cull up to 70% of the Badger population in some areas when there's no real evidence that they spread Bovine TB among the cattle. It's all about the Farmers' pocketbooks and a lot of ignorance in general on their part and of the ones who support it.

I just got back from lunch. More drama at the NBG nest. Not sure what quite yet, but possibly another male...or even another female. |

OMG! Another female vying for NBG Dad's affections! And he apparently mated with her as she aggressed the nest! Speculation is that she's possibly #2 returned.
