Have a great Friday everyone. We're going to have a high of 19C/67F today but it is cloudy and feels very humid like it's going to :rn: any minute.

There was an article in our paper yesterday about the early emergence of mosquitos here. They called them large 'buffalo' mosquitos said they are hanging around homes and barns. I've seen a few myself while out in the yard yesterday and we are getting :rn: today and tomorrow which will make for the right conditions for them; until Sat and Sun nights when it is going below zero which may kill them all :X:

WCV LATEST NX UPDATE :)^

March 22 update

Bald Eagle NX has been on her exercise program for about a week now — and on March 21, wildlife rehabilitator Suzy Doell reported that NX had her best session yet.

Overall, NX is a bit stubborn, so evaluating her flights can be tricky. Suzy has found that it’s particularly helpful to break the exercise session in two — Suzy starts with making NX fly the length of the enclosure until NX grows reluctant, then Suzy goes next door to exercise Bald Eagle #11-0136. Once finished in A1, Suzy returns to NX’s enclosure to continue the exercise session. On March 21, NX flew a total of 10 times.

NX can fly from perch to perch — which is ideally what the rehabilitators like to see. NX is also known to occasionally fly to the ground or lower perches, which could indicate that she is tired, or could also just be NX refusing to fly. Suzy noted that NX was fairly winded at the end of Wednesday’s exercise session. Exercise will continue to condition NX for release.

Yesterday people were wondering on the NBG chat how the GHOwlet was going to be put back into it's nest. Photographer Shelley Fowler had taken an album of photographs of another similar incident at NBG in 2007 documenting the owlet's adventure.

Carole NX is quite the DIVA :D 'Fear the Feisty'

Have you decided when you are heading back home? It's going to be hard for you to leave all your pond critters and I'm sure Maya is going to miss all her friends too.

Did you see this article about feeding bread to waterfowl? Quite startling to see the health issues that can be caused by too much 'people' food :o

Heading to the park to feed ducks and geese can be a fun activity for many families -- but please stop to consider how bad it is for the waterfowl! A diet of bread, chips, and popcorn can lead to malnourishment -- creating some devastating injuries for these animals. Dr. Dave McRuer talks more about metabolic bone disease and other issues that we see with some of these city park ducks.

Penny - Will be heading home the middle of April, we have a Bar Mitzvah to attend on April 21st which I wouldn't miss, girlfriend's grandson.

I did see the article on feeding bread to the waterfowl but I give so little. Neighbours were feeding pieces of chicken, they will eat just about anything. In the meantime with Ma and Pa Sandhill incubating, no one else is coming around.

We did see a funny situation last night. We were at our friend's house behind us and it overlooks the fountain pond. Two male mallards were fighting over one female, what a sight. The both tried to  her at the same time, what a row that caused. Finally one male chased the other away.

I am heartsick at the apparent unsuccessful fledge of Starr Ranch's youngest Owlet, "#5". :'( She's been missing since last night after taking a premature leap to the branch adjacent the nest. The "fledging" video ends with a worrisome clatter of her probably falling down the ladder that SR's Pete uses to make the nightly food drops since Dad went missing weeks ago. She was the smallest and least developed and seemed to want to join her fledging nest mates. :'( Hoping for a miracle and that she's found unhurt, but it's not looking good. :( Nature seems so cruel sometimes. :'( :candle:

I have not been back to the Starr Ranch owl cam since banding day so didn't know about the smallest ^"^ Kris :( Nature is cruel...sometimes it's better not knowing :Hugs:

The Big Fat Gypsy Wedding is on TLC here again. Can't believe how extravagant those wedding dresses and cakes are etc. etc. I was wondering how they even manage to pay for it all  particularly since these brides are young teenagers and most don't have any formal education whatsoever :o The annual Gypsy gathering at Appleby is quite the celebration..their horses are really beautiful :)^

What an alternative lifestyle and how can they ever 'better' themselves??? Sad really because once these girls are married they are virtual slaves to their husbands :hair:

But look at those talons..
One of the things I like about the new CHIL cams is getting
the close-ups of the eagles talons.
