Dear Karen Day Thanks, Carole And WHEN I lose all this extra weight I am thinking about maybe volunteering for some animal organization...maybe at the Carlsbad Nature Center or something of that sort. Something where I can still be free to go somewhere if I want to on vacation or something.

G'day peeps!!!!!!!! Well, here I am on my autumn Sunday morning, beautiful after an exhausting 3 days. Preparation for Open House today and sailing in 30knot winds Friday (incredible!) left me exhausted... physically. Painted the bathroom, cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning. My fingers hurt. My arms hurt from holding on to the yacht in the high winds. Then setting up for Open House, putting stuff away and then forgetting where I'd put it!!! Unfortunately only ONE couple came through the apt today. So disappointing. Well, maybe next Saturday. sigh. I think my on-line photos were not right, they are old and need wide angle lens pictures. Some good news. A pair of bald eagles is nesting on the San Francisco Peninsula for the first time in nearly a century, a milestone for the once-endangered symbol of strength and grandeur. http://www.contracostatimes.com/bay-area-news/ci_20243906/eagles-reappear-san-mateo-after-nearly-century-absence Now to go and catch up on what everyone's been up to. |

Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE March 24, 2012 Juliet's Move ![]() Juliet's 3 cubs - March 24, 2012 Juliet and cubs, flooded out of their lowland den a week or more ago, moved even further away from their den today. We visited them to see how the cubs were developing. They were nursing when we arrived and then slept as Juliet wandered about. She finally settled down to rest under a balsam tree about 30 feet from the cubs’ bed. This left us much closer to her cubs than she was—showing her trust for us. ![]() Juliet returns to cubs - March 24, 2012 When the cubs woke and began softly vocalizing, Juliet quickly came to them grunting. She sat down nearby—seemingly offering herself up for nursing—but when the cubs came she got up and walked away. She grunted for them to follow. Slowly, and with lots of encouragement, excitement, and a bit of assistance from Juliet, the cubs joined her at a new bed under balsam saplings and towering tamaracks. ![]() Juliet nursing cubs under balsams - March 24, 2012 At least 2 of the cubs immediately began climbing a tamarack. They only climbed 2-4 feet but did it repeatedly. Soon they settled in to nurse, and then the whole family fell asleep. ![]() Broken down willows - March 24, 2012 The cubs are still unsteady on their feet but they made it to the new bed site and showed their natural instinct to climb. With all the early-blooming willows in their swamp, we weren’t surprised to see some large willows had been broken down and the catkins (pussy willows) eaten—one of the earliest available bear foods. Juliet is already shedding the underfur on her sides. It seems early for shedding—especially for mothers with new cubs—but the unusually warm weather may have something to do with it. Today’s move to a bed shaded by balsams should provide some relief from the sun for Juliet. And the tamaracks will provide climbing practice for her cubs. Jewel and her 2 cubs are still in their dry den, nursing, playing and growing stronger by the day. Lily and Faith remain near their dry den and visit it occasionally. ![]() Juliet and cubs bedded separately - March 24, 2012 Spring continues with temperatures in the high 50’s (F) and nighttime temperatures remaining well above freezing. All the ice has melted from the shallower lakes here and is still melting from the deeper lakes, but nighttime temperatures are forecast to be near or below freezing for the next couple weeks. We were delighted to read the enthusiasm of a Lily Fan over bear scat in Asheville, North Carolina. She thought it was dog scat on her lawn until she went to pick it up and found that it didn’t smell and was full of berries and seeds. The fecal plugs we picked up also didn’t smell bad, although they weren’t as good as berry scats we’ve picked up in summer. Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |

It's morning here and maybe a bit of good news. It seems that #5 Owlet may have returned. Still a bit of uncertainity but looking more hopeful. I went straight to the computer in hopes of news. Linda, Penny, Carole, and Karen thank you for your much appreciated comforting comments. We set the clocks back last night so now are back on 8 hours ahead of Pacific Time and adjusting our biological clocks.

And WHEN I lose all this extra weight I am thinking about maybe volunteering for some animal organization...maybe at the Carlsbad Nature Center or something of that sort. Something where I can still be free to go somewhere if I want to on vacation or something.
