Topa Peter said he thought the TH had hatched and then something happened to it afterwards ![]() Here is Dr. Sharpe's take on the first egg from TH last night: 10:39 iwsciber: I think the chick actually hatched last night but didn't survive. As much as 81 was moving around he could have stomped on it. 10:42 iwsciber: The chicks are wet when they hatch. 10:51 iwsciber: No way to tell how the chick died because we never saw it and it is probably buried in the nesting material now. |

Penny, that is very disturbing if the person is feeding the wildlife just to get video of them for the internet, which seems to me to be the case. I'm so sorry that TH has had another egg loss this year and so hope for a successful hatch of the remaining one. They've had a couple of challenges in recent seasons. Prayers and blessings on their hatchling this year. We've had some wildlife developments to report this week. Our main Bird box has just been inhabited by a pair of Blue Tits. ![]() They've been using the Sheep's Wool they naturally use for nesting material and that I bought on eBay from a small Sheep herd farmer to line their nest. I've put bits of it on the bushes all around the garden for the nesting Birds. So far I've seen three species collecting the Wool for their nest. You might not be able to make out the small Blue Tit at the entrance to the nest box, taken through the back window but she's been building her nest for a few days now, despite being next to where we park the car. The fluffy bits in the bush is the Sheeps' Wool, and the Coconut shells hold the suet mix food they love.![]() This is the Sheep's Wool I bought on eBay from a Sheep farmer that's used by the Birds to line their nests. It's really "Sheepy" but they love it for the water resistant properties, softness, and emollient effects on the skin of the hatchlings. ![]() Last night when the motion sensing light went on I looked through the blinds to find a Badger (!) eating the Bird food. This was a first and we later found he had dug up the lawn looking for Mice before he left. He was alone, unlike these guys, but was a surprising visitor to our patio in the middle of the night. ![]() He looked more like this when I spied him through the blinds. ![]() We're so happy that the ill conceived and inhumane Badger cull, planned by the "powers that be" to "limit the spread of Bovine TB", has been called off due to environmental and animal welfare agencies' protests. |

![]() Hi everybody. We arrived home late Sunday and spent yesterday getting caught up on everything. We picked Mia and Wynn up from Jenny's. They lost weight but gained muscle from being so busy racing around and digging another hole to China like last time. When we got them home they needed showers!! I'm working my way through the laundry. Robert has been to visit his parents already. His mother continues to decline with her Alzheimer's and other health issues. Jenny got some more unusual chickens, her peacock is in full breeding splendour, and she now has a male and female turkey! Today I did some flower bed clean-up and hydrangea trimming. Robert thinks he will have to cut the lawn .... in March!!!! A baby shower, such excitement and happiness, Topa! I hope we can see some photos. Your garden looks like a paradise for the birds, Kris, with the wool to keep their nests warm and dry and the shells filled with seeds nearby. I think the raccoons here would be doing the same things as your badger visitors. Yesterday I saw the osprey land by its nest near the river. We were on our way to pick up the dogs. I was watching the bird but Robert noticed the fellow all dressed in camouflage taking pictures. Sorry to read about the first TH chick.

Kris those are some great 's especially the clan of badgers That cat looks like it can't believe the invasion of it's space I was reminded of the tenacious badger in the movie 'The Gods Must be Crazy'. He was hell bent on getting back at the boot the pilot was wearing, even following him across a desert until the guy finally gave it some water and his boot so it could have it's revenge ![]() How interesting about the raw sheeps wool...I can see the heavy lanolin in it and I'm sure it has a sheepy odor but the birds don't care How high up off the ground is the nest box the blue tit is using? It looks low enough for any predator to put it's nose in Did you buy the coconut shells online too? Great idea to use them as seed holders ![]() |
