![]() 2012 Nest Adoption Challenge - April 1 - June 1, 2012 The Cruzers adopted SEVEN nests (over $7,000 donated) in 2006, adopted EIGHTEEN nests (over $18,000 donated) in 2007, adopted THIRTY-NINE nests ($39,333.00 raised) in 2008, adopted TWENTY nests ($20,157.00) in 2009, continuing their effort - they again adopted TWENTY nests ($20,000) and in 2011 the Cruzers adopted TWENTY-THREE nests ($23,000), in support of the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS) and their Bald Eagle Restoration Project! Some of the monies have made it possible for us to watch several bald eagle nests, with an upgraded internet feed, adding sound and now 24 hour live feed on the cameras AND NOW - zoom! In their collective efforts, the Cruzers and eagle friends, have adopted 127 nests and donated over $127,000.00 !! ![]() ![]() ![]() Cruzers and Forum Visitors can participate in "Adopt-A-Nest" beginning April 1, 2012 ! You can give once - twice - or as often as your heart desires during the NAC effort! The Cruzers have dedicated themselves to supporting the monumental efforts of IWS and are hosting the 2012 Nest Adoption Challenge - each $1,000 raised adopts a Channel Island Nest! Is there a way you can help make a difference? Yes - every single donation adds up and together, we can adopt one nest at a time! And what is a Cruzer - it is anyone who watches the bald eagle nests and loves the Channel Island Bald Eagles! There are several ways that you can make a regular dollar contribution: 1. Visit IWS.org by clicking on this link Make a Contribution NOTE: You do not need a PayPal account to contribute through PayPal. 2. You can mail checks to: Institute for Wildlife Studies - PO BOX 2500 - Avalon CA 90704 3. Credit card information can be emailed to Peter Sharpe, Ph.D. at IWS: sharpe@iws.org or called directly to Dr. Sharpe at: 310-510-2728 You can designate a special occasion for your donation if you'd like: celebrating a birthday, honoring an anniversary, in memory of a loved one and so much more! Besides monetary donations, credit will also be given for the following - but you must request 2012 Nest Adoption credit at time of purchase :4. If you are "purchasing" a new OR renewing your IWS supporting membership, Dr. Sharpe has advised: "I apply the tax-deductible portion of any contribution or membership to the Cruzers if they specify they are part of the Cruzers" and include a note that it is for the Nest Adoption Challenge. NOTE: CHIL or IWS Forum memberships are FREE and allow you to post and chat! A supporting membership is a monetary way to help the eagles. IWS Supporting Membership (clickable link) is a financial supporting membership with the IWS organization - click on this link for more info. - note: you can now arrange to make payment for your sponsorship/membership over a 12 month period! Bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) were historically found on all the Channel Islands and on mainland southern California. The southern-coast mainland population disappeared by the 1930s, most likely as a result of habitat loss from encroaching development and harassment. Bald eagles were present on the Channel Islands until the mid-1950s or early 1960s, but no successful nesting activity was known. The reasons for the decline and eventual disappearance of bald eagles on the Channel Islands are not completely understood. Possible causes include shooting, egg collecting, nest destruction, poisoning, removal of young from nests, and nest disturbance. The most likely cause of population declines, however, was the production and use of the industrial pesticide DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloro ethane). Between 1947 and 1961 an estimated 37 to 53 million liters of DDT-contaminated acid sludge, containing 348-696 metric tons of DDT, were disposed of in an ocean dump site 16 km northwest of Catalina Island. In addition, it was estimated that another 1800 metric tons of DDT were discharged from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant outfall, 3.3 km offshore of Palos Verdes Peninsula. The introduction of DDT into the Santa Monica Basin marine ecosystem was implicated in the decline of two other piscivorous bird populations on the Channel Islands, the brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) and the double-crested cormorant. These declines coincided with the decline of bald eagles as a breeding species on the Channel Islands. The use of DDT was banned in the United States in 1972. By the late 1970s other bird species that had been affected by the pesticide, such as pelicans and cormorants, were again successfully breeding. ![]() ![]() We all have the same goal - to help the Channel Island Eagles come home!
