<::: Richmond Eagle Cam comes to end; chicks being fed by hand <:::

Posted Image

By: REX SPRINGSTON | Times-Dispatch
Published: April 15, 2012

The Richmond Eagle Cam came to an abrupt end Saturday as scientists dismantled the equipment in hopes of eliminating any distraction that might be keeping the parent birds from feeding their chicks.

Experts fed the chicks by hand Friday night and late Saturday afternoon. The plan now is to keep the area around the nest quiet so that the parents resume feeding the chicks.

The chicks, looking like little live cotton wads a month ago, had grown into gray, downy rugby balls with serious-looking beaks. The bigger one, called R1, weighed about 3½ pounds to its sibling's 2½ pounds or so.

As Charlottesville falconer Eva King held R2, McRuer give it fluids through a tube placed just under the skin.

R2 looked a little down and reluctant to feed Friday, but this time the bird snapped up the chopped fish McRuer offered with a forceps. McRuer saw that as a sign that the Friday feeding helped.

R1 looked big and impressive, and it gulped fish eagerly. "It's almost certainly a she," said Andrew King, Eva's husband and also a falconer. Female eagles are about 30 percent larger than males.

"Both of these chicks look great," Watts said. "They couldn't have looked any better." The chicks were returned to their nest after feeding.

Deb good to hear Megan is doing better :chk:

Posted Image for her :candle:

Did she ever try the vinegar cure for her reflux? She is far too young to be having these issues.
I hope this episode comes to an end soon :X:

Your little grand nephew is just adorable :D His shaving face pucker reminds me of that scene in 'Home Alone'

Deb, what a scare with Megan! But good to hear she's doing better. Since my 30s I've been prone to arryhthmias and have had a few of those 24 hour monitors. :( It always turns out to be benign and reducing caffeine and stress usually helps a lot. I use the herbal tincture of Motherwort, which is famous for it's beneficial heart effects, and extra Potassium supplements when it's a been problem. As for the Apple Cider Vinegar Acid Reflux treatment, it sounds like a miracle cure but doesn't work in all cases. It did nothing for Ed because of the nature of his reflux. People with not enough stomach acid can be helped by it, which is the case with many who are also helped by taking Betaine HCL, but for others like Ed it doesn't work. One thing that does help is elevating the head of the bed to keep the reflux from choking you in the night. Our bed is elevated by 6 inches and it has made a difference for Ed's reflux, though he regularly wakes choking and spitting up blood from it anyway. :'(

Michele, more wonderful NAC posts! :><: And thank you for your thoughts and kind words about the Stargate Card reading I did when Cruz' transmitter failed and everyone was so worried about her. :Hugs: Its accuracy even amazed me when the news came that she was spotted. Those cards are incredible! The reader is just the channel. :)

Well, I heard from my Uncle and learned my brother's surgery was "postponed". Knowing him it may have been a fabrication to try to weasel some benefit from my Uncle. We'll see...

Lady's new man has stepped up and is proving himself to be a dedicated incubator! Here he is just a while ago sitting on the nest while Lady took a Fishing break.

And a close up of the barely visible brown spotted egg. Another one might be expected tomorrow.

We went for a walk in a nearby wood earlier and Ed spotted this perfectly preserved Badger skull, complete with lower jawbone. We both have streaks of zooarchaeology, so we brought it home and will find a nice glass box to house it in. The first skull I ever found was in the Mojave Desert as a child and was probably a Dog or Coyote. It was my favorite artifact until my mother stole it from my "private collection" and threw it away behind my back! :8O:

Hi everybody.

Thinking about Megan and hoping her health issues can be solved easily.

Thanks for the news about the Richmond eaglets, Penny. I watched the video - one chick being fed with forceps and the larger one gulping it down. The biologists seem very puzzled over why the parents are not feeding their chicks .... disturbance with the webcam equipment possibly, others say the eagles are used to noise, hmm.

Excellent overview about the IWS today, Deb. :><: I like the eagle train, too. All aboard!

Kris, wow, that's quite the find. I can see why a collector such as yourself would be thrilled to have the skull. It reminds me of when my boys were little. They found some large white animal bones in a hillside pile of dirt just a few houses away. They came racing home hollering that they had found a dinosaur. rofl Likely it was the skeleton of a horse or cow since it had been a farm area. We didn't tell them that, though.
;)
