Good Tuesday Morning Cruzers

Posted Image

It's cold here again this morning -1C/30F with :rn: expected...not complaining because at least it isn't a :flk: storm like they got just south of us yesterday.

It's warmed up to 4C/39F already on the way to 9C/48F . Hope Carole gets warmer weather at home or she will need a coat after being used to the warmth in Florida :)

<::: It looks like Lady on Loch of Lowes may be in progress with her second egg. Since there's no forum for it everyone is on their own recognizance until an update is posted. The way the Zoomer cam has been going in it seems like they're watching closely, and she looks a bit under duress.

Carole happy and safe travels. :ok: Will look forward to updates on your Pond Critter Crane. :X:

Penny, beautiful image and thought from HCA. <3

Just had to post this very rofl Bear encounter story...

Written by Matt Sutkoski for The Burlington Free Press
April 13, 2012

Gov. Peter Shumlin was naked, ready for bed, when he heard a fuss in his backyard one night earlier this week. He looked out to see four bears looting his bird feeders.

His Department of Fish and Wildlife has issued cautions about leaving bird feeders up this time of year, because they can attract bears, and the state also cautions from time to time that bears are dangerous. But the governor is territorial: Shoo! he yelled in his “strongest Vermonter,” as he put it, rushing into the yard and yelling for the interlopers to bug off.

The bears were not amused.

Waiting outside, Shumlin recalled, were two cubs and two adult bears (though Fish and Wildlife officials think there might have been three cubs and a mother).

The governor was not exactly dressed for the encounter.

“Real Vermont boys don’t wear pajamas,” he said — meaning he was naked. He told WDEV radio host Mark Johnson he was wearing as much as the bears were.

The Whole Encounter or what NOT to do when bears are attracted to your bird feeders :o

This story could have been in a 'Jackass' movie

It's hard to make out due to the brown speckling but it looks like egg #2 for Lady this year! :)^ Must be # 63 0r 64 in her lifetime. She seems exhausted by the effort as happens, especially at her advanced age. <3

Added confirmation from the LoL blog:
"Great news folks: our female osprey laid her second egg of the 2012 season this evening around 5.35pm, and we saw it clearly at 5.40- another lovely reddish brown speckled egg. Amazingly this is her 63rd egg in her lifetime- and she certainly looked like a pro laying it- the usual huffing and puffing for a half hour or so beforehand, and then a final shudder." <3

More drama at NBG this evening...

Pa with #2 back at the nest just after 7:00 PM

Posted Image

But Pa was with #3 all afternoon in the 2004 nest tree according to ground observers...

Posted Image

We'll just have to wait and see what happenes next. #2 is such a large female she is probably too intimidating...even Pa seems cowed by her :o

NX was moved into a different enclosure at WCV today...
Here's her new roomate :<<o>>: #11-0136

Posted Image :clk: 's Posted Image

April 16 update

The veterinary team is thinking ahead toward NX’s ultimate release. NX is currently flying the length of A3 about 5-6 times during each exercise session; while the team would like to see her flying more, NX is proving to be a very stubborn bird. The rehabilitation staff will continue to exercise NX and monitor her progress. On April 17, NX will be moved to A1 – and will be living with Bald Eagle #11-0136. The staff hope that having an adult eagle roommate will convince NX to fly more.

In the meantime, Dr. Dave has been in touch with DGIF eagle biologist Jeff Cooper about NX’s transmitter. Dr. Dave would like to get the transmitter back on NX prior to Release Day – so that she has some weeks to adjust to the “GPS backpack” again. Jeff Cooper will be out sometime during the week of April 16 for the transmitter fitting.

At this point, the Center has not set a release date or timeframe for NX – the staff would like to get the transmitter on her, and continue to exercise and condition NX for release.

April 17 Update

NX was moved to flight pen A1 and was introduced to Bald Eagle #11-0136 — all seems to be going well so far. Both birds have been seen flying the length of the enclosure and sitting on the same perch. With all the latest Critter Cam shuffling and the transition to the webcam network, the staff need to acquire an additional length of cable to hook up a cam in A1. The staff hope to have this done by the end of this week.
