I am so sick at heart and unbelievably sad at what has happened at TH. :'( <:3 Of course K82 is lost too or she would have returned yesterday and would have been there to defend her chick. :'( K81 looked so desolate looking around on the nest, trying to figure out what had happened. :'( It brings to mind last year when Wray returned soaking wet and exhausted as if she'd nearly drown fishing in a Kelp bed.

Deb, I'm so sorry to hear of ES's layoff. :Hugs: In the unstable business of animation I have been laid off many times and it's always devastating in so many ways. With his expertise and experience I'm sure he'll have no trouble finding another great job. :X:

Carole, wonderful the Sandhills have two chicks now. :><: A bit of joy to offset the terrible news on TH today.

Another bit of good news is that Lady of Loch of Lowes has laid her third egg this afternoon! Her 64th, I believe, in her lifetime. I was so depressed about events at TH I hadn't checked the cam or blog until a while ago. The weather's been very rainy there and hopefully she and her mate are keeping the eggs warm and dry. After they failed to survive to hatching for some reason last year, despite tests that determined they were fertile, hopes are tentatively high they will have chicks this year. :X: Bad weather was a suspected cause of their failure to survive last year.

With prayers, sadness, and also thankfulness for the lives of K82 and her tragically lost chick. <:3 :candle: May K81 take heart and live to thrive on. :X:

Deb - Something good will come out of Gary's situation. :X: It is said that strange things happen in strange ways and usually for the better. Gary is a brilliant architect with lots of extra credits to his degree, he will find another job. Lots of hugs and Cruzer Mojo to the both of you. (((GH)))

I know this is so very sad for all of us losing the TH chick. We have been through loses before and most of us come back the next year. We have to help continue the work that IWS is doing to help the ones that do survive and come back to keep the cycle going just like Cruz and 64 tried this year. I know another sad example but there is always hope for next year. JMO

Deb and Gary Hugs, this is so sad that it can be sprung on people like this.

Carole thanks for the picture of the chicks.

I was so relieved to wake up this morning (Saturday here) to see that K82 has returned. :><: I'm glad I was wrong about her fate, but it's such strange behavior for her not to be seen all the previous day and then not on the nest that night. I was hoping someone had made it out to TH to check it out since she and K81 were acting so odd hanging out in the unaccustomed tree nearby, almost as if the chick were injured and somewhere down the side of the nest hill. Still so horribly heartbreaking. <:3

Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE April 20, 2012

Spring is Back

Dot perched on rock in morning light - April 20, 2012

Snow is down to just patches. The weather is beautiful. The much-needed moisture from snow and rain this past week should help ensure a lush green-up. Jewel and Cookie are in their same areas, but Juliet and her cubs and Dot and her cubs have moved. Juliet moved from the swamp she’d been in for nearly a week to an upland area with her cubs. Dot made some rather erratic movements—perhaps attempting to cross a river—before traveling in the opposite direction and settling in for the night. The mothers with yearlings are moving more, of course. Lily and June have gone in opposite directions and are now 1.4 miles apart.

As National Volunteer Recognition Week winds down, we’re thinking about the nearly 250 of you who are currently volunteers. Having only 3 full-time staff and less than a dozen part-time employees, you can see how important the volunteers are in our small organization. The volunteers are what make it possible to think big about Education Outreach. What began as a grass roots volunteer effort is growing into organized volunteerism due to the number of people involved. We're excited to see many of you sending in applications to become part of this rather unique operation. As new volunteer positions come up, we will scan the database for good fits—whether it’s for participation on a regular schedule or for periodic projects.

Who would have imagined that so many would come together to better understand bears? We’re learning and sharing together. The NABC website has updated volunteer information.
The volunteer application form is found here

Thank you for all you do.
