Kris - Kudos to you for rescuing the baby Blue Tit, what a relief to see it back with its parents. :><: Daffy's nest looks fairly hidden, I'm sure you will be seeing babies soon. :^: :^: The goldfinches are beautiful <3 So happy the plaque is just a plaque and no burial took place in your yard. :8O:

Well we've been tackling the tasks one by one:

took our TV boxes back except the dvr - to change the triple we have to pay $200 :( so we'll wait and see...... but the boxes help (and we really don't need 'em anyway)

working on cell phones - probably reduce minutes, etc. and my boss is going to take on my phone since I do use it a lot for work :)

stocked up the larder for some yummy meals at home .... ES is hopping up and down cause he can't wait to have chicken and rice LOL

unemployment has to wait until tomorrow - the week is Sun to Sat - but we can do it online - no big deal however NY has a cap so it won't be anything near what he makes :( not a % deal - so we'll have to be careful until he gets back to work

we're contemplating breaking the car lease or at least parking his car and stopping the insurance for now our car insurance is like $1300 per year for his car :o

so we're looking at things ........

AND it came up since we can't go to CA and we did get all our stuff pretty much refunded - since DS and his family are moving to TN shortly, it will be some time before we'll be able to visit them :'( so we're thinking about driving home to OH - cheap - and staying with DD so we can all visit DS before they move .... that's something we should be able to manage ....... tiresome drive (700 miles one way) but big rewards :><:

I didn't see the video of the TH chick being taken by the fox, I did see the captures
Pat posted yesterday in the morning. I have a knot in my stomach and feel like I witnessed a violent crime. :(

I'm not watching the last videos of what happenened at TH. I was cheering for the ^"^ let in the first one Kate posted because he was doing a great job trying to scare off the fox. That is the last image I have of him in my mind and that's the way I want it to stay.

Michele beautiful posts today for the NAC :><: :><: :><:

I didn't post yesterdays Lily the Bear Update but I'll add it tonight when today's is available.
I understand why some people are not spending time watching the cams...it is too hard when the 'bad' things happen over which we have absolutely no control :(

Kris can't wait to see the offspring when Daffy brings them to your feeding station :)^
At least they aren't high up in a tree like the Canada Goose goslings were :D

This is DT #3 - she came back to the Norfolk nest tonight - twice!!!

Pa came in with her the second time and she practised some egg brooding technigues before they both left again.

Screencap by Deejay...video to follow :)^

#2 was nestorating and  with Pa this morning. I think there has been some upheaval in the skies over NBG today and there was a wedding there too.

DT Back in the Nest (2:11)

The Long Version (12:09)

In the second one there is such a noticeable difference between how Pa treats #3 compared with #2. He is always so lovingly protective of DT.

I have so enjoyed watching the TH EagleCam this season, and K-81 & K-82 have become another favorite pair of mine. So when I heard the news yesterday, I was devastated....especially, because I thought something must have happened to K-82 for her to leave the nest unattended all day long.....that's just not like her. I couldn't bear to watch either the video or the screen captures. I too want to remember the chicklet alive and spunky.

On a happier note, THANK YOU peeps for your kind words on my post today....it means a lot to me, and I truly appreciate all of you kind souls. You guys are simply the bestest.

Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE April 21, 2012

On the Move

Juliet snoozes while her cubs play - April 21, 2012

Juliet flirted with the idea of getting her cubs across Highway 169, but the cubs were reluctant and Juliet gave it up. We were reminded of how it took 3-year-old Braveheart 2.5 hours to get her 3 cubs to cross the highway on June 6, 2005. Just one of the challenges mother bears face.

Lily and June are 2.6 miles apart. Both are in territories they used last year with their families. Lily and Faith will be separating in 4-6 weeks, so we need to get a radio-collar on Faith sometime soon. We hope to catch them when they're fairly accessible.

Jewel encourages her cub to come down - April 21, 2012

With little to eat in the woods yet, human sense would say these bears should be seeking human foods. They each know several residences that feed bears, but they are working hard miles from those places. Lily and Faith are 1.9 miles from the nearest home. June and her yearlings are only 550 yards from the Bear Head Lake State Park Campground, but June has never been there in her 11 years of life. Who can explain it? We just watch and report what they do. Sometimes we don’t know why.

Mothers with 3-month-old cubs are slowed by their cubs, of course. The longest movements so far are by the mother with the largest cubs—Cookie. She and her cubs have now walked 3.2 miles around a lake from their den. They are currently almost directly across the lake from their den, only 0.37 miles away from it. The area is remote and a mile and a half walk from the nearest road. She needs her GPS batteries changed. It will be a big job.
The other mothers with cubs (Jewel, Dot, and Juliet) are staying in much smaller areas.

Jewel and cubs at white pine bed site - April 21, 2012

As we visited Jewel today and found her by the same big white pine she was using for refuge a few days ago, we thought about education. We are poised to leap forward on Education Outreach but need a new Education Building as the launching pad. The need is for office space for additional specialists to administer the Education Program and for a multi-media classroom for the growing busloads of students.

We also want to expand exhibits in the new building to introduce the “World of the Bear“ exhibit—the animals that black bears interact with and the forest habitats where they meet.

A family has agreed to provide $400,000 as a significant start for the new building but there is a long way to go. We’ll have more details by our 5th anniversary on May 5th. This is big, and the results for bears can be huge through students and the public.

A video of June, Aspen, and Aster from April 19 is posted YouTube.

Thank you for all you do.
