'The Scream' somehow has some sort of depressing universal appeal. The TV segment showed the security guys guarding it with guns. Were they on orders to actually shoot if somebody tried to grab it? Isn't it just police who can shoot at folks legally? Anyway that was definitely a shocking amount of money to be spent on it. It's not even unique since there are three other versions. |

Imorton, Rachel is doing much better now that she is home, John too. Rachel is on maternity leave from teaching now until August 19th. Here is the latest photo from this morning sent while I was hiking. This is what we did with the Israeli's while Rachel was in the recovery room. I even have video's taken with my iPhone. Crazy webcams. I think Avery looks like John.

Topa, technology has given us the amazing ability to instantly see pictures, and it is so cool to see up to the minute photos of Avery. I see a lot of Rachel in her - especially the pictures where she has the tiny smile on her face. My dd Amy will be 18 this summer and when she was born I had to shoot a roll of film and drop it off at the 1-hour photo processing lab. How old fashioned! When she was tiny, I would have duplicates made and mail a weekly packet of pictures off to the relatives.

I went to the Museum of Modern Art last weekend in NYC. There is a Diego Rivera exhibit there and a couple paintings of one of my favorite artists Frida Kahlo, But definitely the highlight was standing face to face with Vincent Van Gogh's "The Starry Night." His colors and thick, raised brush strokes just have a life of their own! Amazing that he only painted for 9 years and his only sale was "The Red Vineyard" a few months before his death in 1889. I looked that up and in 1980, 400 French francs equaled $78 US dollars. Can you imagine?? Also got to see Salvador Dali's "The Persistence of Memory" - it's a relatively small painting - and another one of my favorite artists Henri Rousseau, who paints with some beautiful colors!! Check out the rest of the MOMA collection: http://www.moma.org/explore/collection/ Speaking of colors - these images do no justice to the actual colors in the paintings! Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE May 3, 2012 Braveheart ![]() Strawberry blossoms - May 3, 2012 Following up on the news that a family broke up unusually early (April 30) this year in West Virginia, we double checked our records. Several families here broke up the first week of May in 2010, the other very early spring on record. Then we got a call from Glenn and Nancy that Colleen and her yearlings have split up. They had split by 10 PM last evening (May 2), and today they saw Colleen vigorously chasing them away. That made us want to check on Braveheart who was with her yearlings last evening but has split from them early in past years—May 10 in 2006, May 15 in 2008, and was with a male already on May 12 in the early spring of 2010. ![]() View from where Braveheart was to the bend we had just rounded when she ran off - May 3, 2012 We went to check. As the telemetry signal got stronger, we began “It’s me, bear” but they were on a ridge a couple hundred yards off the highway and might not have heard us above the traffic. We were walking along a forest road covered with woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca) blossoms that had opened in the warm rain over night. As we rounded a bend, there was the family tearing apart logs for grubs. They ran. We called out, but a truck was going by. They disappeared into the woods. ![]() Braveheart's family - May 3, 2012 As we left, we took a picture toward the bend from where the bears were feeding. We paced the distance at 165 feet. We stopped at the bend to take pictures of the strawberry blossoms. As we photographed, Braveheart and family showed up. Either they were returning to their feeding area or they had calmed down and recognized our voices. They definitely were still a solid family. This is the year of yearlings and family break-ups. It is potentially the best opportunity we’ve had to obtain a good sample size of data for our family break-up paper. Mothers with yearlings this year include Shadow, June, Lily, Jo, Braveheart, Bow, Donna, Colleen, Shannon, Ursula, and Baby Devil. We wish we were permitted to radio-collar more of these bears. As the BBC counts down to their first broadcast of Planet Earth Live this Sunday night, press coverage is mounting. The BBC’s USA partner, National Geographic Wild channel, is heralding the series as “the largest and most adventurous event Nat Geo WILD has been a part of since its launch just over two years ago.” A shortened version of the BBC program will air on Nat Geo Wild channel at 9 PM EDT on Monday, May 7th. Study of Black Bears Brings Researchers to Ely. Northlands News Center Story. BBC One Preview . The audience the BBC and Nat Geo Wild are predicting for the series is huge. We hope the programs truly educate, and we and the BBC are working hard toward that goal. We can only wait and see. A video of Jewel’s family from April 27 is posted on YouTube. Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |

Jeanne what a wonderful day you had at the MOMA. I'm always amazed at the size of some of the actual paintings that we have seen in books when one has the chance to actually see them in person. That happened when we saw the Mona Lisa in the Louvre. It was so small beauteous, none the less, but sort of a shock after wandering an entire wing with the most gigantic Titians etc and then to turn the corner and see it at the end of the room in a lucite protective box. Everybody was taking pics of it and there was a pretty big crowd too. Good job to get your pic with "The Starry Night" ![]() DH loves Dali and that painting is one of his favorites and I like Frida Kalho ....I don't recall seeing that one but I bet Kris has because she is a huge fan of hers too. Thanks for sharing your museum experience. |
