Seal Rock - Banding Day 2011 Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. ~Theodore Roosevelt~ ![]() "As soon as we arrived to the territory, the female spotted us and begun defending her area. Both, K34 and K25 vocalized and dive-bombed us incessantly the whole time we were out there. They are very good parents so we understand their dislike for us biologists, whom, in their eyes, are simply large predators to their defenseless chicks." ~ Steffani Jijon, May 18, 2011 ~ ................... ![]() The climb is never easy.... .......... ![]() ................ ....... ![]() ............. ![]() ........... ![]() Nor the task at hand..... ![]() But the rewards are priceless. For some people, going to work means taking a train, light rail, or as often as not, driving to their office building…..but for the IWS crew, going to work takes on a whole new perspective. When office workers are taking the elevator to their office, the IWS crew may well be climbing a canyon"s waterfall to reach their office….but they do it gladly, because they are making an impact on the life of an American icon......the reintroduction, and the preservation of the Bald Eagle to the Northern Channel Islands and Santa Catalina Island. To be honest, I can't think of a better way to begin one's day of work. For Further Information on how you can be part of the crew, click on the IWS logo. Michele, I loved everything about your NAC post today. Artsy, this has been going around FB for a few days. I thought of you each time since it's the most creative horse shelter I've ever seen.

Thank You Peeps, for your words of encouragement!!! I truly appreciate them. Penny, I absolutely love the pix of the RT nest.... I love how the chicks are so rolly polly. I loved the Saturady graphic too....that fleur is so pretty. Topa, what a wonderfully whimsical shelter for the horses.....that's GREAT!!! I wonder if it's for real or Photoshopped??? Deb, have fun today at your BBQ....sounds good to me. I'll be thinking of you and ES as you head out on the road for home. Safe journey mu little one. Carole, are you now in Montreal??? A very Happy Mother's Day to your mom.....and to all of you very special moms. It's shaping up to be really toasty today.... shades of the Summer that will be coming our way. I love the transition to shorts weather. If it stayed like this all Summer, I'd be a happy camper...... but nooooooooo....I'm sure it won't be long before we begin to have triple digit temps.....Drat!!! |

Topa, great cap of WE #3 (no other name until he's officially named shall pass my lips ). He's looking so confident and strong. Our Swans may look lovely but the males are "Hell on Wheels". Our local male has been chasing every Duck and even canal boat that passes through his staked out territory. Ed says they can even "break your neck" in an attack. Here's a Youtube video of an angry Swan attacking a Goose. This is just what we've seen with the male Swan attacking any Duck or boat that has passed through our part of the canal. Last night after dark we heard him raging up the canal as in the video defending his territory. He's been crusing the canal broadcasting testosterone most of the day but we haven't seen the female or the chicks for a couple of days. There's an injured Mallard Duck that's been hanging around our yard that we think the swan must have attacked. We've been trying to feed him and he was brave enough to come onto our patio yesterday for food. He seems to have a broken wing and some head injuries, Today while I was gardening I saw the Swan chase this poor injured guy acrosss the canal a few times. He can't fly more than a few feet and we couldn't find where he went. Here's a pic of "Hurt Duck" amazingly finding his way to our patio yesterday for some food. ![]() BTW: Jeanne re: a few days ago. Penny was right that I knew about that Frida Kahlo painting you posted. I've read her detailed biographies and know the stories behind most of her paintings. I love her. She painted that Retablo style one right after she and Diego divorced in 1940. She was in her early 20s. He'd been cheating on her with her sister and she'd cut off all her hair in despair, the hair he "loved" her for. She's wearing one of his oversized suits in it and the inscription says: ""See, if I loved you, it was for your hair, now you're bald, I don't love you any more." She later painted one with her cut off hair fashioned into messy braids on top of her head that began her series of famous self portraits. They got back together and she let her hair grow out again, but he kept on womanizing. Michele, forgive me for not saying at first how wonderful your NAC post was. You are so creative and inspiring. This is the subsequent Frida self portrait mentioned above with the reconstructed hair, after her reconciliation with Diego. ![]() From http://www.fridakahlofans.com/c0390.html: "The strands of hair that had previously been cut off in "Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair", have been gathered up again and plaited into a new braid which, in its shape of an endless loop, might be seen as a symbol of the eternal circle of time. This idea is reinforced by the leaves entwined around the naked upper body of the artist. In this painting, Frida attempts to restore the femininity which she previously rejected and symbolically renounced. Edited by circlescribe, May 12 2012, 11:32 AM.

Hi Kris.....Thank You. I'm with you i.e., naming the chicks.....I was using "peanut" as an adjective, but it does sound like I'm calling the #3 chick by name. I just couldn't come up with a description....I was thinking "pip squeak" (no), "dinky" {noooo), then finally, I thought of "peanut"..... not terribly imaginative, huh..... I think it's interesting that such as elegant creature as a Swan, could be downright frightening when defending his territory. I love the setting of your home......it just looks beautiful. It reminds me of the setting of a scene out of a book I read by Kate Atkinson called "Case Histories". What's the weather been like. Is it warming up at all??? |

Kris, that's as bad as the nordic countries.....I read once that depression is a serious problem in Sweden..... and one of the reasons is due to lack of sunlight. Those individuals diagnosed with depression are often prescribed, not only the usual medication, but the use of sunlamps..... not the tanning type. Oooooo, almost forgot.....I meant to tell you that I too am a Frieda Kahlo fan.....love the painting you posted.
