Bravo, Michele, for bringing back all those memories of the banding of Scout and his sibling last season. The poop shot on Dr. Sharpe and the photo of the eaglet's eyeball ..... don't you DARE it seems to be saying :D . You're so right about the job description. Great job!

- excellent screen caps of your three girls, Carole .... host Richard dressed in aqua matched well :)^ :clk:

A mother chipping sparrow brought her three tiny babies to our feeder area today. She left the babies on our deck railing. I have a clay saucer there that I use for an extra seed location but it was empty at the time. The three babies fluttered into the saucer and sat there while mama bird flew back and forth from the large feeder to the saucer to feed the chicks. They looked so cute fluttering in the bowl. Next she showed them where the bird bath was located and they all tried it out.

Robert saw an osprey down by the river today. I went with them around noon but the osprey didn't appear. Maybe next time.

Kris, I've been chased by swans while riding a bicycle. When I was in university I worked in the summers at the Festival Theatre in Stratford. On my way to work I always rode my bike along the river. It got tricky in May and June. I had to swerve around an angry swan on a number of occasions. They had absolutely no fear of the bike pedals or spokes. I feel sorry for your poor duck and all the other nearby critters.

Topa it's hard to believe that horse shelter vignette is real  Are those miniature horses under there? I love seeing #3 with a basketball crop

Carol your grandaughter Amber is a very beautiful girl, even her eyelashes are stunning and it's nice to see Charlene again too. Yay for Susan using family members who are so natural. I'm wondering if all those show times were Eastern and maybe Susan was on a hour earlier here  In any case, I'm sure it was a big success for her :)^

Kris that's sad about the male duck being hurt and the swan probably the culprit :(
I didn't know the males were so aggressive during nesting season. "He's been crusing the canal broadcasting testosterone most of the day" the mental image of bossy swan is just so rofl
Thanks for the Frida explanation and the braided hair :clk: Here's a poster I saw today:

Cheryl that is such a cute story about the chipping sparrow  How sweet. Those birds are such tiny little things. I'm glad your yard is a safe cat free zone for them :D

Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE May 12, 2012

June & Aster, Jewel & Cubs

Jewel and cubs forage within sight of the den shed that transmitted their den cam! - May 12, 2012

June and her yearling Aster were as close as ever today. They foraged little as they covered ground, stopping occasionally to flip rocks to look for ant pupae but finding none yet. We held up a garter snake for June to sniff and she turned her head quickly away as if repulsed. Aster had less of a reaction but it was obvious neither of them had any interest in it.

Herbie explores the hole Jewel dug ants out of - May 12, 2012

Jewel, Herbie, and Fern spent most of today within 150 yards of their den foraging on a multitude of greens. Jewel did the serious foraging—eating horsetail (Equisetum spp.), large-leaf aster (Eurybia macrophylla), hawkweed (Hieracium spp.) leaves, sedge seed heads, several different types of grass, wild calla (Calla palustris), aspen leaves (Populus tremuloides), and ants. A new food to us was the sedge seed heads, and this was the first time we have seen a bear frantically tear into a snag after ants rather than ant pupae. Jewel was definitely licking up the ants. The cubs were very active following their noses and trying many of the new foods. It was interesting to see their early attempts at eating solid food when they are just getting the teeth needed to bite off the stems.

Today, Sue videoed in the BBC’s format and some of the footage will likely appear in tomorrow’s Planet Earth Live program. They have promised to return the footage to us in a format we can use.

Thank you for all you do.

Carole, I LOVE this.... every time I see Susan, I think about how beautiful she is..... and if she has even an ounce of your personality to boot (cuz she's nailed the beauty aspect from you), then she is one gorgeous young woman.

I'm glad you posted this, it reminded me that I wanted to order some make-up from Pandora. :)^

Penny Thank You for the Lily Bear post.... the other newbie volunteer (a UC Davis student) on the day I work at the UC Davis Raptor Center, was part of a study team on the Minnesota Black Bears....I asked her if she knew about Lily, and she did. Six degrees of separation...... :)^
