Thank you for the Trap Canyon nest history synopsis, Jeanne. The beak-open photo has been one of my favourite chick pics ever. Dr. Sharpe and the team work so hard to locate the nests and band the chicks at the proper time. The eagles don't make it easy for the team! Well done on another very interesting presentation. |

In 2008, West End's first natural hatch was... a Surprise!! At the West End nest in 2008, the future K-67 Surprise hatched from a third egg Wray had laid after IWS swapped in two fake eggs - a delightful "surprise" to IWS and cam watchers. One of the retrieved eggs hatched at the IWS facility, and would become K-65 Miracle. ![]() And this is how it all happened...
In Nest Obs, Barb/silveregal, Lori and Cheryl/cdn-cdn spot a chick where there should only be fake eggs!
How could that be? "WEstie" the future K-65 Miracle hatched at IWS was still there...
But plain as day, there was K01 feeding his newly hatched chick! And the chick hatched at IWS was fostered in the next day!
K-67 and K-65 were later banded and fledged. No word on K-65 since fledging, but K-67 is regularly spotted in the northern islands. Check out these great "Helmet Cam" videos of IWS going to the West End nest on banding day in 2008. You'll get to carefully "climb to the nest with Dr. Sharpe" and get a good idea of what the area around the nest looks like, and how fiercely K-01 and Wray will defend their chicks! Video 1: West End helmet cam 2008, Part 1 Video 2: West End helmet cam 2008, Part 2 And after you've checked out IWS's great work, Click below to see out how you can help them help the eagles!! Oh, Jeanne, as Carole said so well, you have put a ton of work into this presentation with all the quotes, links and pictures. You've also brought back all my memories and feelings from that day. I was out, came home, turned the cam on right away, and got totally confused because I saw a chick there. I knew that the chick wasn't supposed to be placed in the nest until the following day .... what the heck???? While madly trying to get good screen caps I was scanning nest obs and there wasn't anything about a chick being there. I thought I was going crazy. What a surprise for sure! Whoop, whoop, great job!

Whooper Update: Here's one of the two-week-old ultralight chicks undergoing its training. They start them so young! Photo by pilot Brooke (who spends most of the year with the chicks wherever they are).

Maintaining healthy legs: If you'd like to have healthier leg veins, try these tips recommended by various experts: Don't cross your legs when you sit. Take warm, not hot, baths, and end by splashing cold water on the legs. Avoid high heels. Low-heeled shoes work calf muscles more, which is better for veins. Don't wear tight clothes around your calves or groin that can restrict circulation. Take three or four 10- to 15-minute breaks daily to elevate your legs above the level of your heart (for example, by lying down with your legs resting on three or four pillows). Avoid long periods of sitting or standing. Make a point of changing your position, shifting from one leg to the other or walk gently back and forth, frequently to encourage blood flow. Shedding excess pounds takes unnecessary pressure off your veins. Exercise. Walking is a great way to encourage blood circulation in your legs. |

Cheryl - The whooper chick is so cute . It's amazing that the training starts at such a young age getting them used to the ultralight but no time like the present. Keeping that this year the migration will go smoothly, nothing like last year with such interference from you know who!

May 16 update — Release Day for NX!Bald Eagle NX was caught up this morning at about 8:30 a.m. for release. Dr. Miranda and rehab intern Kelli brought NX into the hospital and placed protective bumpers on her “wrists” before placing her in her travel crate. The protective bumpers are piece of soft foam padding, designed to cushion NX’s wings during travel. The bumpers will be removed prior to her release. Wildlife Center President Ed Clark called in to report “from the field” — NX’s release went very well. She was released at 12:10 p.m. at the Rapphannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Ed reports that NX flew 75 yards into a tall tree, and sat there for about five minutes, taking in her surroundings. She then flew through the woods, over an estuary, and into the forest, out of sight. According to Ed, NX did “everything she’s supposed to do!” ![]() Godspeed on your journey to freedom NX, stay safe and soar high |

G'day Peeps, great reading here today, memories, WCrane chicks and NX release.... thank you all for what you do! Cold today but clear, breezy making it seem colder than it really is (48F). Ozzie - So sad about the giraffes . All zoos should have surveillance cams installed to monitor the animals. The Woodland birds are so pretty. That lion with the baby sure looked hungry Last night, Susan, Charlene and Gary brought dinner to the house to celebrate Mother's Day, as I was in Montreal at that time. We had such a wonderful time together. Waiting for photos from Susan which I will post when I get them. |
