WCV - 2 more eaglets in the center....

You may also be watching our “Raptor Tower Cam”, featuring Bald Eaglet #12-0529 and Bald Eaglet #12-0739. Eaglet #12-0529 was found on the ground in Chesapeake at the end of April 2012. On May 10, after the Wildlife Center officially dedicated new flight pen A3, the eaglet was moved into the “raptor tower” portion of the new flight complex — an area specially designed for nestling and fledgling raptors. Eaglet #12-0739 was rescued from Northumberland County and was admitted on May 10. It was moved to the “raptor tower” on May 14.

They both want to get into the nest but it looks too small for 2 eaglets :D

Center stage... A Star Is Hatched!

In 2008, the Two Harbors 2008 chick was hatched at
the IWS facility and returned back to the nest.
Her hatching was broadcast online through the eagle
cams, and was my first experience seeing an eagle chick. I had
co-workers around my desk, all of us in awe to be watching this
beautiful event. She was a highly spirited eaglet and
her energetic wingercizes in the shimmering, starry light
of the Two Harbors cam made her look like a "Dancing Queen!"
She was tagged as "K-83 Star" and was recently spotted
soaring the skies of the San Diego area.

Oh, Jeanne, as Carole said so well, you have put a ton of work into this presentation with all the quotes, links and pictures. You've also brought back all my memories and feelings from that day. I was out, came home, turned the cam on right away, and got totally confused because I saw a chick there. I knew that the chick wasn't supposed to be placed in the nest until the following day .... what the heck???? While madly trying to get good screen caps I was scanning nest obs and there wasn't anything about a chick being there. I thought I was going crazy.  What a surprise for sure! Whoop, whoop, great job! :><:
Yeah that's kind of how I felt - although I wasn't posting til much later on. In fact I had been watching the PH cam for a long time before I joined. And then I didn't really watch the other cams til after Spirit & Skye were attacked. I think that was because I called the PH nest up in Windows Media and never went through the IWS CHIL page.

I really enjoyed going through the old posts. I read many on Limuw - posts and updates were done so differently back then!

I am glad you enjoyed it!

And Carole, you too! :Hugs:

Woo hoo, our girlie girl, Star! :><: Several Cruzers met her in person at the IWS facility, I think, during the tours that they won. Bravo once again, Jeanne. >O<

Does anybody else remember the psychedelic cam at the West End one year? :P

Carole, I'm looking forward to your family pictures! :clk:

Godspeed, NX. You've had your trials and tribulations ever since you were in the nest, now it is time to soar!!! :X: :<<o>>: Carole, the new tower seems so much like the IWS hacktowers, except fancier. :D

;<> Called my mother again to see if we could come for a visit but she is too busy! I guess that's a good thing. My brother was there and helped moved the bags of dirt to her garden. Guess I'm not needed. This is about the fourth or fifth time I've asked her in the past couple of months.

Ozzie, I don't think I'd put my little one so close to the glass. It's teasing the lion just to get a photo op.

Jill, thanks for the leg care tips.

"Weekend solar eclipse to project "ring of fire" "

(CNN) -- Thousands of people are planning viewing parties in the western United States for Sunday's annular solar eclipse, a rare event in which the sun will appear as a thin ring behind the moon. The eclipse will be visible on a path from northwestern Texas through New Mexico, northeastern Arizona, southern Utah, Nevada, northern California and southwestern Oregon late in the day on May 20. As the sun continues its path, the eclipse will then be visible over the North Pacific, in southern Japan and southern China on the morning of May 21.

"I recommend anyone who has the chance to see this, because while they do happen occasionally, it's a fairly rare event," said Jeffrey Newmark, a solar physics specialist with NASA. "It's a neat thing to see."

The last annular eclipse appeared in the United States in 1994.

Penny - thanks I am glad you enjoyed it!

And the pretty picture of Star! Awww.... Hey I recognize some of those feathers - gonna guess both of the barred ones are a barred owl, long gray one a great blue heron, yellow-shafted flicker (that's the easy one), downy woodpecker, mourning dove - and I can't make out the other ones on e right. The big one that is two-toned brownish and white - I feel like I should know that, but not a bird that is around here. What is that from??

Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE May 16, 2012

Where are the Males?

Posted Image :clk:
Braveheart forages along a logging road - May 16, 2012

Where have all the mature males gone? One-eyed Jack (Braveheart’s favorite) is often the first bear seen roaming in the spring—usually in early April. No one has seen him. Same with Big Harry (June’s favorite). Others we are waiting to see are Midnight, Shylow, Pete, and Guy. The only mature males we have seen are Loppy, Victor, Krackle, and Burt. Even they seem to have moved on—for the time being at least.

Lily stops for a drink - May 16, 2012

Meanwhile, Lily and Braveheart roam in full estrus without attracting males. We checked on them both today when they were near logging roads where it’s easy to see if they are being trailed by a male. Both were alone and foraging—Braveheart on peavine and Lily on wild calla.

All we can do is wait and see. We know anything can happen between last September and now. We will be relieved when Jack and Harry reveal that they have survived another year—and some of the female bears will be too! Each year, these dominant males add another chapter to our data, and each year their records become more valuable in the contexts of their histories.

A video of Jewel and her family taken on May 2 is on YouTube.

Each BBC ‘Wild Earth Live’ episode (or Nat Geo Wild’s ‘24/7 Wild’) is an opportunity to educate. Lily Fans can make new friends and help educate by visiting the BBC Facebook Page and letting them know there is much more information about the bears in the program and about bears in general at bear.org and bearstudy.org. More info can be found here.

Thank you for all you do.
