Good morning, everybody. Yesterday I was outside gardening for most of the day and never did get on the forums. Today I thought I'd better say hi first, then head outside. Michele, well done on your informative presentation of the Rattlesnake banding day for 2010. You always show through your photo choices all the beautiful landscapes around the nests. Topa, I just saw your slideshow from yesterday. The music was a pleasure to listen to while watching the eagle show! Nice banner with Anacapa in the centre, Carole. I ache all over but as soon as Robert gets home from the grocery store I'll be headed outside again. Today it's the impatiens to be planted all across the front. I bought three flats of mixed colours. One flat is lavender, one is called 'Monet's Mix' and the third is called 'Peacock'. I just keep alternating the plugs. Today is a day to stay away from the gardening centre. For my US friends, this is the biggest weekend for gardening here. It is the holiday weekend plus the weather is warm enough to get the annuals in the ground. People are either gardening or have headed to their cottages. It was fun to watch the neighbours pull out with their canoes on top of their cars or pulling their fishing boats behind their vehicles.

Wildlife Center Release Two Black Bear Yearlings On Thursday, May 17, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Wildlife Center of Virginia released two Black Bear yearlings. These two male yearlings have been recovering from injuries at the Wildlife Center since early this spring. Black Bear #12-0073 was found in Nelson County in February, with an old eye injury. Black Bear #12-0475 was found in Page County in April — and was likely hit by a car. At admission, both bears were underweight. After recovering from their injuries, and putting on a fair amount of weight, both yearlings were cleared for release by the Wildlife Center veterinary team. The bears were picked up by DGIF and taken to the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest for release. Center veterinary director Dr. Dave McRuer went along for the release, and reports that it was a success. The smaller Page County bear was out of the culvert trap first, and after a quick look around, ran to one side of a pond at the release site and stood in the water for a few minutes. The larger Nelson County bear came out of the culvert trap a few minutes later and ran around the other side of the pond before disappearing in the forest. ![]() Bear #12-0475....................................................................#12-0073.......... Cheryl - I had good intentions of gardening today but my back is too sore. Started to weed the area with river stones but just couldn't continue. We'll see if Alan is up to it, he too is suffering with his back, had x-rays last week and the doctor wants to see him on Tuesday. It's so frustrating as most of our neighbours have already done their back gardens and ours looks so terrible. We still have to buy soil, black mulch and some small bushes and impatiens. Will look into the ones you bought, I love colour. You better not overdo it, you know what a sore back is all about.Penny - Weather here is gorgeous, going up to 80F today and 83 tomorrow. The RTH chicks are so cute

Awwww, Carole those bear cubs looked like they will do just fine on their own in the great outdoors ![]() Cheryl I brought home impatients and begonias yesterday and managed to get the smaller begonias in the pots. How many plugs are in a flat? I haven't heard of 'peacock' what colour is that? My huge hanging fuschias got a bit battered from the downpours last night and the winds did a number on the larger hanging begonias too. I should have put them in the garage when we got home last night ![]() I thought it was going to be a nice weekend here after those high temps we had during the week, but NO, it's cold and miserable today. Hope Sunday and Monday reach the highs of 21C/70F ![]() |
