Penny, that Goosander had 20 chicks according to the Loch of Lowes blog. They're all on hatch watch there for their Osprey Lady and her mate in the next few days. The weather's been so bad I'm praying it isn't a repeat of last year. This morning there was snow on the nest. Last year they sat on the eggs more than twice the time they would normally take to hatch but they didn't. Tests revealed they were fertile, but exposure to weather was the suspected cause of their failure to hatch. Some good news: The Mallard with the drooping wing and head injuries I posted a pic of last week is doing better! His wing isn't as drooped and he's been hanging around and eating, even grooming, so hopefullly it's not a break but just a sprain. I did see the male Swan chasing him around on the canal a few days ago, that Swan is so aggressive! , and the poor Mallard can't get any air yet so couldn't easily get away, but he's improving. We're sure that what happened to him was that the male Swan attacked him. I found Youtube videos of Swans attacking Mallards and other things in their territory. This male routinely follows canal boats as they pass by, viciously chasing them as if he's the only reason they leave the area.

How cool is ........... that webcam Jill! those photos Deb, Congrats to ES ! the NAC today! Eagleland Penny, we have your weather here today too. After a few weeks of absolutely spectacular today is cold, cloudy and dreary... My Sunday, heading to the hardware store (there is always something that needs fixing), then to Rex's for his 50th, taking an orange poppy seed cake. |

Hi Kids!!! Finally, I get to sit down for a few minutes without having to be pulled away....Yea!!! Carole, you know how much I LOVE Eagleland, and seeing Harmon being fed by a loving parent brought me to tears. What an emotional roller coaster Harmon took all of us on.....and for it to have turned out so well, up to this point, is just too wonderful for words. Happy too to see those cutie pie Black Bear Cubs make a run for freedom. I too hope that they remain together. Penny, Thank You for all of your wonderful graphics, and your kind words. I often sit and stare at the computer trying in vain to come up with ideas for my NAC posts....but for some reason, if I read a quote, it can get me past the hump, and I can suddenly see things take shape in my mind. Sooo, that's been my kick starter....quotes. Cheryl, I have felt so lazy today, and reading how industrious you've been makes me feel even lazier!!! We've had cool weather for the past couple of weeks....until today.....I'm thinking that the warm weather has made me feel sluggish.....that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Penny, I'm a lovin' those RTH chicks....those little fuzz balls are soooooo precious. And the Gossander Express is hysterical!!! Kris, I'm holding out hope that all will be well with Lady and that she and her mate will have a successful clutch this year.....hope, hope, hope. Kudos to both you and Ed for providing a safe haven for the Mallard while he recuperates from his injuries. It sounds like he's making definite progress....YEA!!! Deb, it's so good to see Gary and his team receive the well deserved recognition by the AIA .....and he looks very handsome in his sports coat and tie. Thank You Peeps for all of your loving support to everyone on the NAC committee. I know that for all of us, it's a labor of love born out of our love of not only the Bald Eagles, but the IWS too. You guys are just the bestest.

back at the hotel - great dinner and visit with the team members and significant others ![]() As you saw on my tag - the award/program was "architects of healing" the 7 main persons spoke briefly about their experience if they were in the area when the towers were hit and fell - their thoughts after - their vision when they became involved with the project at ground zero it was not sad at all (thank goodness) but very revealing ..... Robert Davidson who planned and designed the Intermodal Station Daniel Liberskind who is responsible for the GZ Master Plan David Childs the architect who designed 7 World Trade Center and of course 1 World Trade Center (from gary's old office) Michael Arad who designed the reflection pools Craig Dykers who was an integral part of the Museu Santiago Calatrava who designed the Transportation Hub Steven Davis involved with the Museum After their speeches - they along with the other architects for Flight 93 Memorial and the Pentagon Project, were all presented with special medals Then the "teams" who worked under the 7 speakers were brought up and recognized! We're going to visit the Pentagon Memorial tomorrow before we head home ..... photos to follow And with that - we're off to bed zzzzz been a very long day

Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE May 19, 2012 ]Big Field Day 's June grooming Aspen............Juliet and family heading off - May 19, 2012 Braveheart, June, Jo, and Juliet all needed their GPS batteries changed today, and we got around to all of them. Most exhausting was trying to follow Lily who we suspected was with a male. She moved fast, and if there were a male with her, he moved faster. We never saw him. Jo is traveling widely, too, same as Braveheart. June still has her yearlings, so she isn’t into high gear yet. She’s in the clover patch eating clover. The females on the move are foraging little, just sniffing the branches they pass and moving on. A video of June and her yearlings from May 8 has been posted on YouTube. 's Red Admiral butterfly on lilacs.............Monarch butterfly on lilacs - May 19, 2012 A little nature note, the south wind that fanned the forest fire toward Ely a couple days ago brought with it clouds of migrating monarch butterflies—more than any of us have ever seen. Before the wind, we saw none this year. Yesterday, they were all over. We couldn’t stop talking about it. Today, a clump of lilac bushes had maybe a hundred flitting around it along with Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) and Compton Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis vaualbum) butterflies, big boreal bumblebees (Bombus Subterraneobombus borealis), hummingbird moths (Hemaris spp.), and more. We have never seen so many monarchs. 's Jo - May 19, 2012....................Braveheart - May 19, 2012 The BBC is working around the clock to gather and edit up-to-date footage for tomorrow’s Planet Earth Live. You can show your support for the bears by posting on the Planet Earth Live Facebook page. More info on the helpful things you can do can be found here. Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |
