The Rt. Hon.
I hereby open debate on the following bill. The debate will last until at least Jan. 26th, 2013 (4:31pm EST), unless closed earlier by majority vote.

Quote:

The Senate Size Act (2014)

An act to define the size of the Senate.

Short Title

(1) This act may be referred to as The Senate Size Act (2014).

Number of Seats

(2) The number of seats in the Senate shall be seven (7)
(3) If there are fewer than seven (7) nominees for the Senate, the size of the Senate shall be five (5).
(4) If there are fewer than five (5) nominees for the Senate, the Grand Chancellor may appoint members to fill the empty seats.

So the size of the Senate is five or seven? If we're going to limit the Senate, may as well limit it to a specific number ie seven.

It is limited to seven, but we need some mechanism if there are fewer than seven candidates. According to this act in that case the number would be reduced to five for that term.

This sounds acceptable. I like it.

A little question, though: why not simply limit it to seven and apply section 4 in the event of fewer than seven candidates?

To be honest I'd prefer for the number of elected Senators to exceed the number of appointed Senators as often as possible. I think the current provisions provide for that.

All right. In that case I fully support this proposal.

I vote NAY for two reasons:

1. We must represent the people. The more seats, the more they are represented.

2. Changing the number of seats in the senate would require a change to the Constitution, not the law.

Firstly I'd like to say that your use of large fonts and colors is obnoxious. Next, I'll respond to your points.

1. I disagree, a Senate of 7 better serves the people by having more active members.
2. You clearly have not read the Constitution, or you would know that it empowers the Senate to determine its own size.

Firstly I'd like to apologize for using an easy-to-read font size that's more comfortable to read in my opinion, and then I'll respond:
1. I see what your saying, but only the active members would vote for senators in the first place, and only members who were truly active would run.
2. I thought it said 5-15 depending on the amount of people who run, but I should probably reread that before I confirm.
