OOC: It's about time I created this thread This is Tara McLeod, reporting live! The crews of the so-called "Garbage Fleet" have been rescued at sea in a courageous rescue effort by the crew and captain of the HMS Gypsy Dancer. In spite of a large storm and hostile seas, rescue divers from the HMS Gypsy Dancer were able to pull the hapless sailors from their life boats and get them to the relative safety of the ship. The rescued sailors, in their condition, were unable to state the whereabouts of the fleet but they were adamant about two things. The fleet did not go down and is still afloat, and the more bizarre claim that "The Dutchman" came for them. Officials state that they will continue to press the crews for the state and whereabouts of the fleet once their condition has improved. All vessels are asked to keep a lookout for the "Garbage Fleet", last seen somewhere in the Krimeon Sea. I thank you for your words of support and solidarity. I am afraid however, that this attack stems from a less romantic source than political ideology. This act was perpetrated by simple greed and a lust for power. Early reports indicate that the attack was planned and initiated at the behest of Princess Harper Rhodes, the King's sister. In light of this evidence a warrant has been issued for the capture of Princess Harper Rhodes, dead or alive. "BREAKING NEWS" The Seaforth Foreign Legion, under the command of Brigadier Aidan Pryde, has secured the Great Jonothanian cities of New Brooklyn, New Bronx and New Manhatten. The area, known operationally as the Tri-city Protectorate has now been isolated from the Great Jonothanian civil war. Latest reports indicate that the citizen were jubilant at the arrival of the Legionaries and refugees from the rest of the country are pouring across Legionaire lines to the safety of the Tri-city Protectorate. With this massive influx of refugees, the Kingdom of Seaforth has announced that any humanitarian supplies transported by ships bearing the Flag of Seafoth will be transported free of charge, costs to be deferred to the Kingdom of Seaforth. It is estimated that the Kingdom of Seaforth is responsible for over 60% of the worldwide foreign shipping industry. (OOC: First IC use of Adamsneeka's hard work. :P) "BREAKING NEWS" There are reliable reports that Princess Harper Rhodes has eluded capture. It is believed that she has fled to the neighboring nation of Elpidia. BREAKING NEWS Gunfire has erupted in downtown Locklyn in the nation of Elpidia. Located at major mall in the heart of the city, a short but furious gun battle took place between what appears to be two rival gangs. Eyewitness reports indicate that the fight started near an ATM machine by the food court. The fight swept through the food court and intensified as it spilled out into the parking lot. Eyewitness reports also state that both gangs carried off the bodies of their wounded. Local police have confirmed that no assailants were detained or captured and that three bystanders were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. |

The Arctica , is the worlds's largest and most powerful icebreaker and is the only ship currently operating with a Polar Class 1 designation. Grand Admiral James McKenna had this to say. "The Arctica is a tremendous strategic asset and tangible projection of our sovereignty. Fireside With The Royal Family In an exclusive fireside interview with Colonel Josiah Rhodes and King Josiah I, our very own Tara McLeod asks some of the questions that are most on peoples minds. TM: Colonel, Your Majesty, you have both received some serious wounds recently. Are you recovered? KJ: Yes. The excellent care I received in East Moreland and here definately saved my life and led to a speedy recovery, I would say I'm operating at 100% JR: I am as recovered as much as I'm going to be. TM: Colonel, how did you survive? JR: Well, parts of me didn't. The special forces medics did one hell of a job. That and my body armor and equipment absorbed a lot of the most lethal shrapnel. The most dangerous injuries I sustained were massive blood loss and pulmonary contusions and cerebral edema due to the concussive force. TM: Well Colonel, it hasn't seemed to slow you down. So what will happen to the Queen-consort? JR: The FORMER Queen-consort as well as Travis Beck, Simon Beck and the survivors from the attacks in Dominiscius will be tried by military tribunal and if found guilty, will be executed. TM: No trial by a civilian court and jury? KJ: Hell no. TM: I see. With Colonel Rhodes having returned from the dead, so to speak, what dynamic can we expect to see in the Royal household? KJ: My dad and I have discussed it at length and we both came to the conclusion that I will abdicate and he will assume the throne as Josiah II. TM: Isn't that a little odd? The son is Josiah I and the father is Josiah II? JR & KJ: Yes. TM: Why did you decide this and what will you be called once you abdicate? KJ: We are not bred royals. Up until the recent civil war in Seaforth we were both officers in the army. We live by a code of honor that quite frankly, rarely exists in established and long lived royal families. I think it goes to their head sometimes and they believe their birth entitles them to things they have not earned. As military officers we are able to place the good of the command or the good of the country above personal status. We both believe that Seaforth will best be served with my father as King. Once I abdicate, my official title will be Lt. Colonel Joshua Rhodes, Prince of Seaforth. TM: So your abdication is in no way related to the Illumic Channel incident? JR: Not at all. My son handled that well. His goal was to keep foreign military buildup away from our coast and he succeeded. He sought allies in the area and he succeeded. He reaffirmed our sovereignty and joined the CIS and ordered the Seaforth Foreign Legion to create a safe zone in the Tri-city Protectorate during the Great Jonathanian Civil War. All in all it has been a pretty successful reign and I hope to meet the standard he has set. TM: Will there be a coronation? KJ: When my sister is safely returned to us, there will be a private ceremony where my father will be crowned and I will transfer power. TM: So what do you think about the Illumic Council? JR: The future of the Illumic Channel should be determined by Illumic nations. Hopefully this council can see to that. TM: Thank-you so much for your time, if I may? JR: You may. Patricia Rhodes Found Guilty, Princess Harper To Return. Following a private ceremony, King Josiah I has officially stepped down as King of Seaforth with his father assuming the throne as King Josiah II. A military tribunal has found Patricia Rhodes, Travis Beck and the other conspirators guilty of all charges. Following the verdict the guilty parties were executed by hanging at the prison barracks where they were being held. Shortly after his coronation, King Josiah II released a statement offering asylum to persecuted Christians living in Forena. This was followed by an emotional joint statement by King Josiah II and Prince Joshua imploring Princess Harper to finally return home. |

Princess Harper Returns Home!  Princess Harper Rhodes, triumphantly returns home after harrowing run for her life! It was a tender moment as she was meet by her family, King Josiah II and Prince Joshua. When she began her flight, her brother was King and her father was presumed dead. How things have quickly changed! Tears of joy were evident in all three as they shared prolonged hugs after Princess Harper deplaned. We did manage to get in a few quick questions before she was whisked away into a waiting vehicle. "Princess Harper! How do you feel?" "I'm exhausted, but I have never been happier. So much has changed in the short time I was gone. I'm stunned an excited that my father is alive, though I'm going to have to talk with Joshua about what I need to know." "How do you feel about the Queen-consort's plot against you?" "Whatever I feel pales in comparison to what my father and brother have had to deal with." "I see. So what are you going to do next?" "I'm going to sleep for about a week, then there is this little grey sports car I 'Borrowed' in Aeternum, I need to get one of those. I may also have to replace one........" With that, Princess Harper entered the SUV and headed off to Seaforth Castle where I'm sure there will be quite the family reunion. Explosion In Dartfordia! The Human Rights Conference in Dartfordia has been marred by what appears to be a terrorist attack. Shortly before midnight an explosion ripped through the Lenira Hotel. Prince Joshua was in Dartfordia to attend the conference while waiting to return to active duty. Luckily, Prince Joshua was not in his room at the time of the attack, but was reportedly in the Lenira Hotel Bar, socializing with guests and members of the various delegations. Reliable reports indicate that, subsequent to the explosion, Prince Joshua assisted in clearing the bar of patrons and ushering them to safety. Following the terrorist attack in Dartfordia and the increased tensions in Elpidia, the Kingdom of Seaforth has ramped up military presence along the Elpidian border as well as increased deployment of naval ships in the Illumic Channel. Prince Joshua Scolds Empress of Rokkenjima "Earlier today, Prince Joshua made his recommendations to strike Articles 12 and 13 from the Declaration of Human Rights, in the belief that these Articles were unnecessarily divisive and were not, in fact, basic human rights." "The response was rapid, with Elpidia, Dartfordia and Rokkenjima all stating a refusal to sign if these Articles were stricken. With me is political correspondent Bill Wallace." "Bill how did this play out?" "Well Tara, Prince Joshua proposed striking Articles 12 and 13 as they represent not basic human rights, but political views that are divisive and detrimental to the goal of establishing basic human rights. Rokkenjima, Elpidia and Dartfordia all responded as if this was an attack on the LGBT community." "It wasn't?" "No Tara. The Articles were to be stricken in their entirety, including heterosexual marriage. If anything, it would have put the heterosexual and LGBT communities on an even stance in the views of the declaration." "I see. And threatening not to sign if 12 and 12 were stricken?" "It shows that those three nations are ready to chuck the whole process if they don't get their way. Basically, they got together and wrote this up. Seaforth Settles Arctic Depths! The Kingdom of Seaforth announced today the foundation of a new city. The city, Rhodesia, would have made news for the name alone. The truly extraordinary aspect of Rhodesia is it's location. Located on the ocean floor of the Great North Sea, Rhodesia marks the first attempt at permanent settlement of the seas. Though called a city, Phase One mainly consists of military personell, scientists and contruction crews and engineers. Indeed, the primary purpose of Rhodesia is to serve as a military platform and scientific research station. It's exact location is currently classified. King Josiah II had this to say. "With world tensions flaring up and tragedy seemingly striking everywhere, I wanted to make an announcement that didn't have to do with naval standoffs or terrorist attacks. While other nations, including several allies, look to the stars, I knew that Seaforth should forge it's own path. They look to the sky, we look to the sea. While Rhodesia will maintain a military presence, the scientific potential is immense. Fluid dynamics, geothermal energy, materials technology, pressure gradients and not to mention serving as a prototype for eventual extraterrestrial colonization." "As Seaforth does not maintain or participate in an advanced space program. We would be interested in the exchange programs of information, technology and personell with various nations, in the future, once Phase One is complete." Construction On Rhodesia Continues! Construction of Rhodesia continues on schedule and slow but steady progress continues. A senior project coordinator has told SNN that the Seaforth government is looking to expand operations by taking advantage of their complex in East Morelands Technology City. By enlisting East Moreland workers to pre-fabricate the various "packages" and complementary to construction being done in Seaforth, building speed may be increased by as much as 15% Seaforth Is Not Alone! Following Seaforth's statement of opposition to a dangerous Caelidia project to establish permanent structures on the moon, the King's concerns were echoed by the United Nordic Peoples. In an official statement from Seaforth Castle, King Josiah II commended the UNP while calling on the governments of East Moreland, Quinntopia and Rokkenjima to reconsider their support. Evanthe Anselmo visits Seaforth Josiah II and the Viceregent of Rokkenjima have begun an unprecedented display of diplomacy. In a whirlwind tour, the King was a guest at Pyrena Castle where, sources say, he and the Viceregent were able to make incredible progress towards a better understanding of each other. Foreign Car Imports Skyrocket! In the wake of the events of Princess Harper's sensational run through Aeternum, Seaforthian imports of the Karin E27 she famously stole and tore through the country in has jumped 115% in the last month. There are major concerns that Aeternum will not be able to keep up to expected demand, but that has not stopped the orders from flowing in.

UNP Evacuation Completed!  The evacuation of Seaforthian citizens from the UNP has completed. 2517 citiens, including embassy staff, were evacuated. Most of the citizens were located in the capital city of Uppsala. The embassy has not been abandoned with Ambassador Maggie MacIssac vowing to stay behind to assist any stragglers as well as any Nordic Christians claiming asylum. The Seaforth Embassy has been reinforced by regular force military personnel and will continue to operate. Watch groups have questioned the number of citizens evacuated, stating that the number is unusually high. Rumors are also circulating that a number of Nordic Christians have already claimed asylum and that the numbers reflect Nordic Christians escaping on falsified Seaforthian Passports allegedly provided by Ambassador MacIssac. In a statement from Seaforth Castle, King Josiah II has gone on record stating his continued support for Helene Oman and Seaforth's classification of the Gungnir as a terrorist organization. "I unequivocally declared war on terrorism a few weeks ago. I just didn't think that the UNP would appear to be the initial battleground. As far as Seaforth is concerned, the Gungnir has declared war on all peoples of our faith. As that is the case, all Gungnir will be treated as combatants wherever they are located, inside or outside of the UNP." When asked to clarify whether or not that means the Seaforthian military is cleared to operate within the UNP the King responded with this. "It's a war. Once military force is deemed an appropriate response, our goal is the complete destruction of the enemy. We are however, respectful of Willa Sunbrek's position and will maintain a defensive posture allowing for the UNP government resolve the situation on its own. That being said, we will not stay behind our walls watching the Gungnir herd away Christians or stop Christians from entering our embassy." When asked for clarification, King Josiah II simply stated: "I have stated Seaforth's position. Further clarification is unnecessary." |

Royal Wedding Shocker!  Seaforthians across the country and around the globe were glued to thier televisions this past weekend for the Royal Wedding of King David III and Queen Matilda of East Moreland. The ceremonies were attended by the entire Seaforth Royal family, while Crown Prince Joshua also attended what will certainly be remembered as one of the most famous Stag parties to ever take place. During the Stag, security was tight but we did manage to catch up to the Prince and ask about his unusually tame behavior. When asked, Prince Joshua laughed and replied. "My date to the Wedding is a very respectable woman. In light of that and out of respect for her, I was my very semi-best behavior." The Prince followed that statement with his trademark wink. When questioned about 'semi-best', the Prince remarked. "Well, it was a Stag party, what do you expect?" Many speculated who Prince Joshua was attending the ceremonies with, expecting all questions to answered when his date was known. This however, was not the case as his escort turned out to be none other than Princess Evanthe Anselmo, Princess of Arovium and the Viceregent of Rokkenjima. The couple appeared happy and animated throughout the day, except for one small instance. Apparently, the Imperial guests were not pre-informed as to Evanthe's date and there are several photos of the Empress looking somewhat stunned. Prince Joshua and Princess Evanthe managed to dodge both reporter and questions quite effectively, leading some celebrity trackers to dub them "Evades" a combination of Evanthe and Rhodes. So what's next for Prince Joshua? Dinner with the family and the "Dragon Lady of Rokkenjima" herself? |

Rocky Start For Seaforth At The Winter Games The Winter Games are off to a rocky start for the Kingdom of Seaforth with our nation capturing only a single bronze on day one. Some close calls and bad luck contributed to the results, particularly the 4th and 5th place finish for the Women's Super G Team. The Men's Hockey Squad also dropped a heartbreaking loss to the UNP. A lackluster first period allowed the UNP to score three quick goals. Seaforth rallied to out skate and out muscle the Nords in the final two periods, winning both, but the damage had been done. In a short interview, Team Captain Erik Scott had these comments: "It's a long tournament. We came out flat and they didn't. We rallied and showed we could beat then in the last two periods but we ran out of time. We won't make that mistake again." There were some bright spots in Day One. We picked up an unexpected medal in Women's Downhill Skiing and as several Team Seaforth officials pointed out, our strongest sports come in the latter half of the games. Indeed, the Women's Hockey Team posted a win over Ireden and the Men's and Women's Curling Teams both went undefeated. Early predictions indicate an eventual Seaforth/Dartfordia showdown. Seaforth Military Goes On High Alert In response to USR's stated intention to construct a base in the Illumic Channel and the subsequent death of Chairman Stalin and the inaugural speech made by the USR's new Chairman, all branches of the Seaforth Military have been put on high alert. The fleets are on the move and various regiments have been mobilized to the Transvaal border and other locations. We are receiving reports that the reserve regiments have been called up and are being readied to deploy. The Seaforth Foreign Legion has returned to Coventry and looks to be rearming and resupplying. With Raynald Lachlan and Prince Joshua currently heading to the Illumic Council, this may seem as posturing by Seaforth, though it has been reported from a source close to the royal family that "Seaforth will not accept continued challenges to Illumic nations controlling the Illumic Channel" and "Eastern wars will not be fought in Western waters." Seaforth's Golden Day Day six of the Winter Olympics definately belonged to Seaforth. After a mediocre start the Seafothian Olympians came on strong on Day Six earning not only the first gold of the Games, but two more as well. Faith Hennessey soared above slopes, earning her gold in Women's Aerials as Baker Tiernan did much the same in the Men's Halfpipe. Leigh McIvor stunned the crowd with a come-from-beind victory in Ski Cross. Seaforth's Brad Downie also took the podium in Men's Aerials. As predicted, Seaforth's strongest sports continue to come in the back half of the Games and the nation is eagerly awaiting the upcoming ski jumping event.  Faith Hennessey, above the clouds. |

Seaforth Armed Forces Test New "Iron Man Suit"  Prince Joshua and select soldiers test the prototype headgear incorporating communications, HUD and other capabilities.  Concept design for finished TALON suits The Seaforth Armed Forces is planning to develop a project to equip soldiers with “smart armor” that could take Iron Man from blockbuster movie to battlefield reality. The modern soldier faces many physical challenges on the battlefield: Combat is an enormously demanding experience, although adrenalin temporarily mitigates much of the stress that is put upon both body and mind. Soldiers need to be flexible and highly mobile during a firefight with the enemy, but the requirements of carrying weapons, ammunition, medical kit, communications equipment, water and personal rations – in addition to being weighed down by body armor – has the effect of limiting the speed and dexterity with which even the most well-conditioned human being can move. Add to this the necessity of being able to negotiate obstacles, buildings and quickly board, and dismount from, fighting vehicles and the soldier is faced with a difficult task. When covering long distances on foot, soldiers often have to carry backpacks and other load bearing equipment that might weigh as much as 150 pounds. In partnership with government research facilities, academics and the technology industry, the Seaforth Armed Forces is planning to enhance the battlefield capabilities of combat soldiers by equipping them with TALON; The Tactical Assault Light Operator Neo-Suit. According to the army, TALON will take the existing prototype exoskeleton concepts that have already been produced to a new level; incorporating armor made from “smart” materials that will be embedded with sensors, wireless networking capabilities and a computer system that the soldier will be able to access through a wearable display similar to Google Glass. The sensors will monitor the wearer’s physical condition by detecting such indicators as heart-rate and temperature. In addition, however, this Iron Man style suit – which could become a battlefield reality within three years – will be powered with a hydraulic system which would enhance the soldier’s physical capabilities. Col. Dr. Karl Reinhardt, with the Seaforth Armed Forces research, development and engineering command, said that a weapon system would also be integrated into the suit. “It’s advanced armor.” he said, adding that the suit would incorporate communications equipment. A team at Eventide University, which has already begun work on similar concepts, is likely to be involved in the design and development of the new body armor, according to the army. Professor Gareth McKinley suggests that such futuristic systems may be similar to those seen in Hollywood science fiction movies. Among the new concepts envisioned by the team – and currently in development – is a type of liquid body armor, which would transform to a solid state using electrical current or magnetic fields. McKinley has said “It sounds exactly like Iron Man.” Even if and when such a suit is developed and perfected, the military faces three further challenges; the cost of equipping army units with the new sci-fi armor will be considerable. Training soldiers to operate and maintain the equipment will add considerable time and expense to Basic and Advanced Individual Training programs and, lastly, but of paramount importance, will be finding out how such equipment holds up in combat: The physical wear and tear on such a suit would be considerable, in addition to the necessity of withstanding harsh climates, such as extreme heat or cold, humidity, dust, sand and mud, depending on the theatre in which forces are operating. Withstanding direct hits from modern, high-velocity small arms without compromising the operational abilities of the suit is one vital, additional factor. A large part of modern warfare comprises operating against lightly equipped, fast-moving enemy combatants who employ guerrilla tactics; seeking shelter in areas that are not easily accessible due to the harsh terrain, striking quickly and then withdrawing once met by heavy resistance. The Iron Man suit, were it to become a reality on the modern battlefield, may well prove to be highly effective for soldiers fighting from defensive positions as well as to withstand the demands of offensive operations against heavily defended objectives. The possibilities are intriguing and the Army will, no doubt, be anxious to perfect such a concept. |

The blockade will take place outside of the Transvaal EEZ and within international waters, as the practice of state-sponsored piracy invalidates any consideration under the Fair Seas Concordant. We encourage all freedom loving nations of Mundus to likewise sanction the Transvaal for this inhumane practice. Seaspan Inc. Breaks Ground In Toshikawa  CEO of Seaspan, Daniel Sinclair, unveiled today that Seaspan Inc. has brokered a deal with the government of the Toshikawa Shogunate to expand into the city of Gowu. The project calls for Seaspan Inc. to construct a modern drydock and shipbuilding installation and to begin production of civilain ships, including freighters, tankers and various trawlers for the fishing and crabbing industries. "This is a rare opportunity for us to expand. With the success seen by Halifax Shipyards in expanding into East Morelands Technology City, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to do the same in Toshikawa. Unlike Halifax shipyards, we have traditionally have not been involved in the production of military ships. That's what made Toshikawa so ideal. As a maritime nation and neighbour in the Illumic Channel the logistics are outstanding and I expect the installation to produce significant long-term gains." The Evening News Hour With Tara McLeod Hurricane Katrina As Hurricane Katrina turns north and approaches Seaforth, meteorologists have downgraded Katrina to a tropical storm. The nation could still expect to see heavy rains and high winds and the citizens of the coastal areas are digging in as best they can. The island will instead be leased jointly to East Moreland and Seaforth, both nations having stated that the island will be developed into a military base and trade hub under the joint administration of East Moreland and Seaforth. Details are yet to be worked out, but experts predict that the new base will jump start a significant upswing in both nations economies and deal a devastating blow to criminal and terrorist activities in the Illumic Channel. Critics have been quick to point out that the base will leave East Moreland and Seaforth in a dominant position in the Illumic Channel and liken the move to Rokkenjima and QAMB. Prince Joshua was quick to counter. "These are our home waters. If East moreland and Seaforth seem to be the dominant nations in the Illumic Channel, it is only because we have led the cause to secure the Illumic for Illumic Nations. That has had more to do with diplomacy than military might." Supporters of the Prince applauded his response and praised his diplomatic skills, still developing under the tutelage of Ambassador Raynald Lachlan. Absent Prince? There has been many questions about Prince Joshua's activities over the last few weeks. Despite such victories, such as the recent events of the last Illumic Council meeting, some sections of the Seaforth population have been very vocal in his choice of companions. Prince Joshua and Evanthe Anselmo stunned the world by escorting each other to the marriage of King David III of East Moreland. With the history between Rokkenjima and Seaforth still fresh in many people's minds, many are wondering at developments between the two. Most recently, Prince Joshua was reported to have spend the last few days prior to the rumored Dunwich meeting travelling around Arovium, a prefecture of Rokkenjima and Evanthe Anselmo's titled principality. There are also reports indicating a possible "Rally Car Event" between Alexander Anselmo and Prince Joshua. The increasingly vocal minority question whether Prince Joshua is becoming the "Privileged Royal" that he railed against during the Illumic Incident and that his father, King Josiah II and himself fought against during "The Blood War". A protest has broken out at Seaforth Castle, calling for his return and to abandon the "Eastern Princess". Comments from the protesters below.... "What the hell is he doing? Josiah II Unveils New Royal Arms, Renews Peerage King Josiah II unveiled the new royal arms of Seaforth today. Based upon the traditional Rhodes crest, first carried by Jocelyn of Rhodes, the addition of "stars and bars" signifies the six provinces of Seaforth. The Crimson Tide will continue to serve as the national flag of Seaforth.  With the unveiling of the Royal Arms, the King also announced the renewal of the Peerage of Seaforth. In the wake of The Blood War, all titles of nobility were stripped from their holders and merged with the crown. The historical order of precedence is as follows. Sovereign Crown Prince/Princess Prince/Princess Duke/Duchess of Seaforth Duke/Duchess of Caledonia Duke/Duchess of Scotia Duke/Duchess of Northumbria Duke/Duchess of Arc-Royal Duke/Duchess of Strathcona The Duchies of Seaforth were then followed by Counties and then baronies. King Josiah II has not made it clear if the peerage will expand past the six duchies or how quickly the peerages will be awarded. The King has merely stated that the peerages will be awarded to suitable recipients as they come. Following his speech, King Josiah bestowed upon Grand Admiral James McKenna the title Grand Duke of Seaforth. Grand Duke McKenna played an instrumental part during The Blood War, keeping the Royal Navy at sea and thereby preventing them taking an active part. Had the navy become involved, the destructive power of the ships would have escalated the destruction and death toll exponentially. It is a testament to his character, will and presence of command that the navy followed his orders to the letter and did not choose sides and turn on each other. McKenna himself was identified as "minor nobility" and was one of the few to survive The Blood War. It is also an established fact that the McKenna name is one of the "12 Families". The "12 Families" are the descendants of the 12 Knights Hospitaller that were still alive following the unification of the Kingdom of Seaforth by King Ulric and Jocelyn of Rhodes. With the decimation of the nobility, there are some that claim that while always influential, the "12 Families" will become the new nobility of Seaforth. |

BREAKING NEWS In the early morning hours the integrated defense network and early warning system detected an "unstable object" in Mundus Orbit. As the "unstable object" broke atmosphere it further split into two pieces, based on trajectory it was determined that these "objects" were on a path that would see them impact in the vicinity of Seaforth. The larger object was determined to pose a threat to Seaforth and the local region and was intercepted and destroyed by Solar Guard ballistic missiles. The second "unstable object" splashed down in the Illumic Channel off the coast of Seaforth. AIRBORNE REGIMENT DROPS INTO SAFRAEN The Seaforth Airborne Regiment made a successful combat drop into northeast Safraen at first light this morning. With support from Spitfire and Hurricane fighters and Thunderbolt and Grim Reaper ground support aircraft, the regiment parachuted in a mile behind Achkaerin lines. The regiment, under the command of Lt. Colonel Prince Joshua Rhodes, linked up with Achkaerin forces and is expected to relieve Verover troops operating in the area. The Airborne Regiment is functioning as the vanguard for OPERATION SIDEWINDER, the Seaforth contribution to the liberation of Safraen. The Seafoth Foreign Legion, under the command of Brigadier Aidan Pryde is operating as an independent command while overall command of OPERATION SIDEWINDER is under the direction of Lt. AVRO AEROSPACE UNVEILS INTERCEPTOR  In the airforce of today, virtually all jet fighters are strike or multi-role aircraft. Even the few nations that still employ aircraft formerly designated as interceptors have provided them with some form of ground attack. Avro Aerospace has gone "back to it's roots" to produce a modern, advanced interceptor based on a proven airframe with the addition of advanced technology in avionics, stealth, fire control, communications and power plants. The hallmarks of the interceptor, designated by the Seaforth Armed Forces as the SA-187 Black Knight are exceptional speed, range and maneuverability. The Black Knight is expected to enter trials at the end of the month. Specifications Free Trade Agreement With Transvaal The Minister of trade announced the completion of a free trade agreement with our southern neighbour, The Transvaal Empire. This deal is likely to improve the odds of Transvaal being accepted into the CIS, but is by no means a certainty. It the deal is heralded as both an economic and diplomatic victory and is expected to help improve relations regarding miscommunication about Transvaal's previous human rights record and civilian practices, specifically the issue of indentured servitude. BREAKING NEWS! VEROVER TROOPS ATTACK SEAFORTH! In a display of treachery the likes of which is seldom seen, Veroveren renegades ambushed Seaforthian troops involved in the liberation of Safraen. Citizens Protest Rokkenjima! Following inflammatory and insulting comments by representatives of the Rokkenjiman and Dartfordian governments regarding the practice of whaling, some citizens of Seaforth have taken to the streets to protest. What's unusual about this protest is what they are protesting. Forget the usual targets, this protest is all about the Bees. Rokkenjiman Mead, the nations most well known drink is the target. Made from the distillation of honey, the crowd is armed with costumes and placards. MEAD IS MURDER! BEES ARE PEOPLE TOO! MELITTOLOGISTS LIKE TO GET STICKY! END INSECT SLAVERY! GET DRUNK ON TORTURE!   "We manged to speak to one of the leaders of the protest...." "Sir why are you protesting Rokkenjima Mead?" "Well, I know it's good, but my dad's a whaler. It's easy to be against whaling when you have no whales of your own." "What do you mean?" "Well, there's no whaling fleets in Rokkenjima or Dartfordia because there are no whales." "I see. Fall Of The Foreign Legion Terrible news greets the citizens of Seaforth today. The battle with renegade troops from Verover is over, and the Seaforth Foreign Legion has been shattered. Ambushed and outnumbered, the Legion, under the command of Brigadier General Aidan Pryde, the Legion fought bravely. Early report from the battlefield indicate that some elemnts of the Legion are intact following a breakout maneuver led by Captain Eric Fallstaff. These elements were ultimately saved by quick action from Lt. Colonel Joshua Rhodes, Prince of Seaforth. Agressively maneuvering his regiment, the Prince was able to establish a counter ambush and destroy the Verover pursuers. The bulk of the Legion, unable to disengage from Verover forces, had been overrun in several position and engaged in hand to hand combat. In a final act of courage, Brigadier Pryde call in fire from attack aircraft on his own position, denying the Veroveren renegades victory. Initial estimates place Legion casualties at 60%. Sadly, Brigadier Pryde is confirmed as Killed In Action. The rumours from High Command indicate a strong possibility that Pryde will posthumously recieve the Cross Of Valour, Seaforth's highest award for bravery, above and beyond the call of duty. Surviving elements of the Legion have been placed under the command of Prince Joshua, who will continue to act as the vanguard for Seaforth forces in the liberation of Safraen. 1200 Verover troops are reported to have been captured by Seaforth. Additionalll, General Brook has been captured by an Achkaerin special unit. In response to the incident regarding the Sea Avenger, Seaforth and Rokkenjima are to enter discussions regarding the Whaling Industry. While Empress Beatrice is headed to QAMB to meet with the crew of the Sea Avenger, a stop over is planned for Seaforth. While Seaforth has a long history of whaling, it's economic value and importance has waned in the past century. Historic reasons for whaling were primarily for whale oil and other by products used in industry and cosmetics, whale meat has always been a secondary benefit. In the last century the situation has reversed. With modern technology, whale products are being replaced by synthetics while the major market for whales today is in the meats and specialty dishes. A small protest regarding the Rokkenjima and Dartfordian response whaling continues. The protest is fueld by tongue-in-cheek placards and college girls in revealing costumes and is gaining an audience, if not much outright support. Princess Harper spoke on the protest and Alex Anselmo's comments regarding it. "The protestors have a point. It's easy for people and governments to be against an industry they have no part in. It's win-win. They can take 'A Stand' with no repercussions to themselves or thier economy. That being said, this protest quickly transformed into a fad and I think many of them are just there to see the girls." "I'm glad Alex Anselmo no longer sees every protest in Seaforth as being representative of the nation or the government. It was not always the case, and shows that he is maturing into a fine young man. I would like to say that, though I believe that Seaforth produces the finest ships in Mundus, we could learn a thing or two from Dartfordian railway technology. With what hey are doing with MagLevs and Mass Transit, Seaforth should definately be looking into similar systems here. |

Empress Wins Big In Seaforth Beatrice, Empress of Rokkenjima, scored big points with the citizens of Seaforth in her handling of the protest aimed at Rokkenjima over the issue of Whaling. Embracing the Seaforthian cultural penchant for symbolism and humour, the Empress released "Slave Bees" over a field of flowers near the airport.
The display was met by laughter and a hearty round of applause from the "Bee Protesters", and the demonstration broke up soon afterwards. One protester made the following comments. "I never would have believed that the Empress of Rokkenjima would pull something like this off. It's like she suddenly gets it. Good for her." Confirmed Heart Attack For The King It has now been officially confirmed that King Josiah suffered a moderate heart attack. The King's physician reports that he is expected to make a full recovery. |

Bill 218 Fails In The Legislature When push came to shove, the those elected to guide the Kingdom of Seaforth decided to support the CIS and our ally Achkaerin by not voting for Bill 218, a needlessly punitive and harsh law. The "Ayes" managed to gain only 8.7% of the vote, with 11.3% abstaining or unable to vote. Though Bill 218 has failed, Achkaerin is still a hot topic in Seaforth, dominating the air waves and interwebs. There has been no official position statement made from Castle Seaforth, as Grand Admiral McKenna continues to fuction as head of the government while King Josiah II recovers. |

Seaforth To End Whaling In a statement from Seaforth Castle, it was announced that the Kingdom of Seaforth will phase out whaling as part of it's economy. "With advancements in petroleum and synthetics, as well as a general reduction in demand for whale meat, the economic benefit no longer outweighs other concerns regarding whaling. As such, whaling will be phased out over the next three years, with the whaling fleet being converted to crabbing vessels at cost to the government of Seaforth. The Kingdom of Seafoth will continue to allow a one week whaling season leading up to the 'Whalemen's Festival', but beyond that, whaling will be a thing of the past in Seaforth." Soldiers Return Home! Following the unification of Safraen, the soldiers of Seaforth return home to great fanfare. The campaign, let by Lt. General Ulysses Scott was a resounding success. Barring the treacherous attack by Veroveren renegades casualties were well below those predicted. This was, in no small part, due to the excellent leadership of officers like Lt. Colonel Joshua Rhodes, Prince of Seaforth and Captain Eric Fallstaff, who became national heroes for thier actions during the Verover crisis. So what's next for these two heros? In a release from High Command, Prince Joshua is confirmed as being promoted to Colonel. His next duty station is Command and General Staff College at "The Citadel". This is a two year advanced degree in militray science and leadership that is mandatory for future promotion to the General Officer ranks. Captain Eric Fallstaff is promoted to Major and transferred from the Seaforth Foreign Legion to command a battalion of Lord Strathcona's Horse, one of Seaforth's premier armour regiments. Colonel Rhodes and Major Fallstaff are both expected to be put on extended post-deployment leave before assuming thier new duties. Brigadier Aidan Pryde Awarded Cross Of Valour As expected, the widow of Brigadier General Aidan Pryde was presented with her late husbands Cross of Valour in a state ceremony earlier today. Brigadier Pryde was awarded the cross for his courage and sacrifice during the Veroveren Treachery. Outnumbered and ambushed, Brigadier Pryde ensured the survival of his command and ensured Seaforthian victory by calling in massive airstrikes on his own position when his brigade became overrun by Veroveren renegade forces. Seaforth Foreign Legion To Rebuild! While still a shell of it's former self, the High Command intends to fully rebuild the Foreign Legion. Following the actions of officers such as Brigadier Pryde, Colonel Rhodes and Major Fallstaff, recruitment is through the roof with scores of men and women from both Seaforth and across the globe flocking to recruitment offices in Seaforth. Seaforth Military Research And Development announced today that the City of Rhodesia, Seaforth's cutting edge facility located on the ocean floor, became self-sustaining today. Returning Soldiers Given Freedom Of The City Soldiers returning from duty in Safraen were honoured with "Freedom of the City" across Seaforth today. While many regiments were given that honour in their home city, the national regiments were given the honour in the capital of Eventide.  Seaforth Highlanders After the parade, the regiments held family day in various locations in and around the city. Family Day is an event where the families of military personnel are invited out to the bases for an all day event that includes lunch and dinner, games, activities, demonstrations and the opportunity to inspect the equipment used by their family members.  Something tells me this girl is a Future Soldier. Illumic Ex 2014 The armed forces of East Moreland and the Kingdom of Seaforth took to the waves as they kick off the largest military training event to ever occur on the Illumic Channel. Over the next several days the two nations will train cooperatively in diverse aspects of naval warfare. While East Moreland have been responsible for most of the itinerary and training operations, Grand Admiral McKenna announced that Seaforth's simulation will consist of Advanced Battlespace Incursion Defense. When asked about the disparity between the 19 East Moreland naval vessels assigned and Seaforth tasking over 50, Grand Admiral McKenna stated that... "While East Morelands ships will be partaking in the training full time, the Illumic Fleet will be rotating it's ships through, depending on role. The others will be observing and on standby." Unofficially referred to as "Rockin' Rokkenjiman" young girls and women across Seaforth are adopting the style of the traditional Rokkenjiman Kimono. The elaborate silk dresses are not for everyday wear however and are primarily used to replace traditional formal wear for "Black Tie" events and so called "Kimono Parties". South Hills referred to the move as a "Political Strongarm", while the Kingdom of Tytor threatened to sever the cordial relationship currently maintained between our two nations. Cure for Cancer Found in HIV? In April this year, Emily Forsyth's family had almost given up hope. The brave six-year-old had been fighting leukaemia for two years, only to relapse for a second time during intensive chemotherapy treatment in February. Doctors had exhausted all the traditional treatments as Emily could not remain in remission for long enough to attempt a bone marrow transplant. So her desperate parents, Kari and Tom, started looking at more radical options. Doctors suggested they sign Emily up to a clinical trial that would use a disabled form of HIV to carry cancer-fighting genes into her T-cells (disease fighting cells). The hope was that this would re-programme her immune system to recognise the cancer cells and start killing them. Several adults had already been enrolled in the study at the Hospital of the University of Eventide and had responded well, but as it was so new the treatment wasn't without risks. But time was running out for Emily, who is also known as Emma. Mr Forsyth said: 'We were told that we were down to 48 hours of making a decision or she could start having organ failure.' They comforted themselves with the knowledge that even if the treatment didn't work, it would provide doctors with information that could help them save other sick children. So on April 17, the then six-year-old became the first child to have the therapy known as CTL019. The family had been warned Emily could experience flu-like symptoms a few days after her re-engineered T-cells were injected back into her. But her symptoms were far more serious than doctors anticipated. She became critically ill and was admitted to intensive care at the children's hospital. On April 24, doctors told her parents she had a one in 1,000 chance of surviving the night. Trial leader Dr Owen Joyce and his team realized that the level of a certain protein had become very elevated as a result of the T-cells growing in Emily's body. This same protein is involved in rheumatoid arthritis, and there is a drug for that disease that turns off production of that particular protein. The team administered the drug to Emily, with dramatic results. Almost overnight, her breathing improved, her fever dropped and her blood pressure was back to normal. Mrs Forsyth said Emily inspired them with how she coped. 'She's extremely smart and creative. She's funny - she makes us laugh all the time. She never complains,' she said. Emily was diagnosed with the most common childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in May 2010. Unfortunately her case, like 15 per cent of sufferers, was resistant to traditional treatment. She was put forward for an experimental therapy known as CTL019. In certain cancers, including the type of ALL that Emily was battling, a subset of cells in the immune system become leukaemia. These are called B cells. Another set of cells in the immune system, called T-cells, normally recognise and attack invading disease. But in cancers like ALL, the abnormal leukemia cells fly under the radar of the normal T-cells that are meant to kill them. In the experimental treatment, her T-cells were collected from her blood, then re-engineered in a lab to recognise and attach to a protein called CD19 that is found only on the surface of B cells. To do this they used a gutted HIV virus, called a lentivirus, to carry special receptors into the T-cells. There is no risk of HIV infection from a lentivirus. When the re-engineered cells were put back they dispersed throughout the body to find and kill cancerous B cells. Emily had an additional drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis to tackle a side-effect of the therapy and has been in remission for seven months. |

Seaforth And Rokkenjima Enter Into Game Changing Treaty BREAKING NEWS In an announcement from Seaforth Castle, Prince Joshua stunned international reporters by announcing the signing of a formal treaty with the First Empire of Rokkenjima. In this announcement, Prince Joshua declared that the City of Rhodesia is declared to be sovereign territory of Seaforth and as such, claims the 24 miles radius surrounding the city, but is ineligble to claim an EEZ further than the 24 mile limit. This claim has been recognized by the First Empire. The City of Rhodesia is located in the Illumic Channel, due west of Seaforth Province and just inside the EEZ. In Empress Beatrice's recognition of Rhodesia she stated that: "....in which the First Empire recognized the City of Rhodesia as the sovereign territory of Seaforth, with an interim recognition of the 24-mile radius surrounding the city. Rokkenjiman officials also pledged to work with Seaforth to push for an update to the FSC to address oceanic communities such as Rhodesia" Prince Joshua further announced that the Kingdom of Seaforth officially recognized QAMB as the sovereign territory of the First Empire of Rokkenjima, with all rights thereof. Far from being finished, the Prince then went on to say that the groundbreaking cancer treatment, pioneered at Eventide University would be wholly shared with the First Empire. While still in the experimental phase, this medical breakthrough is believed to be an extremely effective and long term solution to the plague of the 20th and 21st century. As if that weren't enough, the new treaty also establishes a Seaforth Naval Staion on the Rokkenjiman Island of Hoshiko. Construction of Seaforth Naval Staion Gibraltar is set to begin immediately with both Halifax Shipyards and Seaspan Inc. both taking part in the construction of the port, drydocks and other facilities. Seaforth Pulls Off Major Upset! Seaforth's first foray into the IFFA World Cup is off to a respectable start. In the first match Seaforth and the UNP played to a 0-0 Draw. Earlier today, Seaforth managed a stunning victory against the much higher seeded Thomradia. Late in the second half, the Thomradian defense broke down under constant Seaforth pressure allowing Striker Owen MacIssac (11) a clear shot at the goal with the keeper out of position. Thomradia attempted to even the score, but the Seaforthian defense, falling back into a "centerfield trap" successfully frustrated their attacks. The end result puts Seaforth into a tie with Tytor, the group favorite, for first place. The next match is against Tytor and will determine the overall leader in Group C.

Seaforth Goes Global Following the renewal of friendship with the Supreme Empire of the North, the Kingdom of Seaforth announced today that a new agreement has been reached with the northern nation. While the previous trade agreement has been renewed, and additional treay between the two nations has been reached. Currently cash strapped and with infrastructure extremely diminished following their civil war, the Kingdom of Seaforth has agreed to build a state of the art port city on the west coast of SEN. In addition to that, the Kingdom of Seaforth will be transferring over to SEN, 9 Warrior Class Destroyers. These vessels last saw action in the initial Illumic Crisis and formed part of the blockade of the Illumic Channel. While older, these vessels are fully upgraded and comparable to most destroyers currently in service worldwide. To augment these vessels, the Kingdom of Seaforth will begin construction of three Invictus Single Class Surface Combatants, one Queenston Class support vessels and two Arctica Class Icebreakers. In exchange for these vessels and construction of the port facility, the Kingdom of Seaforth will be granted an autonomous military facility in the Supreme Empire of the North. This base, to be known as Seaforth Naval Station Resolute (SNS Resolute), will serve as the far north and east arm of the Royal Navy patrol route and establish the Kingdom of Seaforth as a nation with truly global reach. The initial term of occupation is 25 years, followed by 10 year automatic renewal terms. Seaforth Supreme Court Deliberates on Rhodesia King Josiah II has asked the Supreme Court to deliberate and furnish an opinion paper of the legality of Seaforth's claim of sovereignty for the City of Rhodesia. The ships and crews, all part of a Joint Task Force under the command of Commodore Edward Carlyle, engaged and defeated the Transvaal navy at approximately 10:30 this morning. While the East Moreland and Seaforth Navies claim 11 of their own ships were damaged, early estimated put the number of damaged Transvaalian vessels in the 17-24 range. Grand Admiral James McKenna had this to say: "No one is questioning the courage and basic seamanship of the Transvaal Navy. They are brave sailors and fought well. Carlyle and McCaffery are among the very best of a nation that prides itself on a highly developed, highly skilled navy. Owen MacIsaac Leads Seaforth To Another Victory MacIssac, just before scoring his second of two goals. The Kingdom of Seaforth's national team stunned the crowd again downing the third seeded team from Tytor, 3-1. While both teams played a very close match, it was Seaforth and their star striker Owen MacIsaac who managed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. "The Tytorians play a very good, technical game." Said MacIsaac. "They are proficient in all aspects. Our game plan is very different. On the defense, we fall back to the center field trap. It frustrates opponents. When we gain control of the ball we transition to a full on offense. There is no middle ground for us. The key to our victory here was the ability to rapidly transition from defense to offense and back again. It allows our players to take the defenders one on one at worst and out number them at best." Golden Bears Stay Strong! The rematch against the national team from the UNP was electrifying for Seaforth fans. The follow-up game to an opening 0-0 was expected to be close and hard fought, and it was, until the midway through the second half. Though down 2-1 entering the second half, the superb conditioning of the Seaforthian players and the continuing reliance on a transitional game, allowed the Seaforthians to grind on the Nordics endurance resulting in a breakdown in the UNP defense resulting in three unanswered goals. Once again, Owen MacIsaac netted two goals and continues to lead the team in offense. With the victory against the UNP, Seaforth has managed to secure a quarterfinal position in their international debut. With two games left to play in the round robin, a win would guarantee that Seaforth would take Group C and play the eventual points race winner between East Moreland and Dijel. |

Tobias McCall First Judge Named To World Court With the signing of the Uppsala Convention and the establishment of the World Court, the Kingdom of Seaforth has named the first signatory judge to the Judiciary. Chief Justice Tobias McCall, who's name many will remember from his handling of the Transvaal vs Elliot and Foster legal case in recent months. With McCall's elevation to the World Court, King Josiah II has named his replacement as Justice Bethany Forrester. Naval Bases Go Online After months of furious construction, SNS Resolute, located on the coast of the Supreme Empire of the North as well as SNS Gibraltar, located on the Island of Hoshiko have, within a week of each other, gone online. In a report from the Admiralty, the Kyne Fleet will be headquartered at SNS Gibraltar with staffing levels to match CSTO assets located in the Illumic. The North Sea Fleet will have it's headquarters located to SNS Resolute. In addition, the Admiralty has announced that SNS Resolute will be made available to CIS allies operating in the North Sea. Seaforth Trade Fleet Braves Zachachevanian Blockade In a joint statement Josiah II, King of Seaforth, and the Minister of Trade announced today that the Seaforth Trade Fleet would continue to call on ports in the nation of Zachachevania, despite sanctions and a possible blockade by Meche, Rokkenjima and other nations. The Minister of Trade had this to say: "These sanctions are not directed towards Seaforth and the "blockade nations" have made no requests of us. Mystery Illness Throughout Seaforth In an official statement from Covenant Health, public health officials warm of an unusual disease spreading through Seaforth. This illness is a member of the hemorrhagic fever classification and appears to be a mutated strain of Lassa Fever. Incident At One Internation Trade Center A deadly incident has apparently occured at the Seaforth Embassy to Rokkenjima earlier today. Multiple reports of gunfire have been recieved. Massive Protests Lead To Riots Following the revelations by the woman known as Tara X, massive protests broke out across the nation. The protesters initially were mostly peaceful with some injuries and minor property damage. The Seaforthian band Rage Against The Machine also came out of retirement and played a show in Eventide, supporting the protesters in thier movement against the Catholic Church and the Government. Rage Against The Machine The protests turned exceedingly violent when they were met with counter protesters, faithful to the church. This has lead to violent clashes between the two groups, culminating with the protesteers siezing government buildings. The mob then proceeded to destroy servers and burn as many offical records as possible. Specifically targeted records include birth records, social security information, tax data and the like. These records were targeted due to the eugenics program. The commonly themed response from the various mobs is anger at a eugenics program that stripped away humanity and individuality. In essence, should a citizen desire it, they would at this time be able to completely reinvent themselves with no way to verify identity, family, monetary status or anything else. Lassa Fever Goes Viral, Massive Infections What had started as isolated incidents of mutated Lassa Virus has, in the last week, erupted into an all out epidemic. Deperately trying to stem the tide and control infection rates, Covenant Health estimated the current death toll to be over 100,000 with many more thousands still infected. Extremely lethal at 98% mortality, the low incidence of infection made the disease managable, though the fever has now apparently gone viral. State Cracks Down On Protesters The national police service, supported by the military has come down hard on the civil unrest sweeping the nation. Mass arrests and detentions has forced the government to construct temporary detention centers to house all of the belligerents. Vocal critics of the government are making comparisons to the former USR and identifying the detention centers as "Concentration Camps". With the Lassa Plauge continuing to rise in the nation, Air Marshal Sheridan has granted the Catholic Church the right to raise a militia. Protesters Continue To Clash With Church Militia Church Militia continues to clash with protesters, now considered a renegade faction in Seaforth. The rebel faction is attracting military personnel to it's banner and is beginning to arm itself. The Triumvirate has listed Andrew Rhodes and Eric Fallstaff as the leadership of this rebel faction. Small scale operations and firefights have broken out across the western part of the country. It is believed Colonel Scott Carrol was broken out of Bethlehem Asylum by the rebels and is currently in hiding with them. As the civil unrest escalates, a growing number of vocal Seaforthians are calling for the return of Brigadier Joshua Rhodes. Acknowledging Seaforthian laws, and not identifying him as King, they are instead heralding him as "The Black Prince Of Seaforth" in reference to Prince Gabriel Rhodes-Cameron, a 14th century exiled Prince of Seaforth who the citizens of Seaforth demanded return and assume the Crown of Seaforth in the face of the tyrannical regency during the time of his cousin's reign. Prince Gabriel did return and ended the regency, ably ruling the nation until the majority of his cousin, King William II. While there are several parallels to that situation, Brigadier Rhodes has not acknowledged the the nickname. This hasn't deterred his supporters however who have begun associating the banner of Price Gabriel with Joshua Rhodes and are quick to point out that though Rhodes-Cameron is technically an dormant cadet branch of House Rhodes, Joshua and Harper are in fact members of both branches. * The banner of Prince Gabriel depicts a black dire wolf's head. Triumvirate Ends House Rhodes In response to increasing support for the return of Brigadier Rhodes, the Triumvirate in consultation with the Supreme Court of Seaforth have enacted legislation to retire House Rhodes as a noble house of Seaforth, listing the last member to be King Josiah II. The arms were retired and in a small ceremony were placed into the Knights Hall in Seaforth Castle, the final resting place of Noble Houses that have gone dormant. Joshua Rhodes is now listed as Joshua ap Neb, which translates from ancient gaelic to be Joshua, son of No One. |

Wolves In East Moreland The Dire Wolf Banner of Prince Gabriel Rhodes-Cameron was raised over Falkenrith Lodge today. The Dire Wolf Banner has come to be the unifying symbol of the rebel faction, also referred to as the loyalist faction. The rebels, conforming to the rules of warfare under the Uppsala Convention, are using the image depicted on the banner in the form of arm bands fulfilling the requirement that irregular forces "wear a distinctive symbol or uniform that marks them out as not being a civilian." In addition to this, many members not of the irregular forces, have taken to wearing Dire Wolf pins and other paraphernalia in a show of support to the rebels. As mentioned in a previous report, many Seaforthians are viewing Joshua Rhodes as the second coming of the "Black Prince of Seaforth" and several parallels can be made between Prince Gabriel and Joshua Rhodes. It is unclear exactly what the raising of the Dire Wolf banner implies, but reports from inside the rebel faction indicate that the news of the banner flying over Falkenrith Lodge was met with cheering and celebration among the rebels and the irregular forces experienced a definite surge in morale. There has been no comment from the Triumvirate. |

The first actions taken by the Pope were to mobilize the Knights Hospitaller as a military order, to authorize JET to undertake an independent investigation into the Lassa Virus and to call upon the international community to stay out of a "purely internal matter" Tara X Freed! Despite a report of her death, the "Loyalist Faction" is reporting that Tara X, along with 36 other "political prisoners" were freed from a church run prison camp just before dawn. Seaforth Military Embraces "Sedition" In what appears to be a direct response to Pope Innocent XIV's elevation to the "Papacy", his referral to "Loyalist Forces" as seditious and the militarization of the Hospitallers, several military units have raised the Dire Wolf Banner over their bases and ships. Dire Wolf banners are reported to be seen over Technology City, East Moreland as well as SNS Gibaltar, SNS Resolute, The City of Lyonesse, and compounds in Konigsgrad and Gowu. Sheridan Calls Out Military In the wake of continued "sedition" by many aspects of the Seaforth Military, Supreme Commander Sheridan issued a series of orders early this morning, recalling the Royal Navy to ports in the Illumic Channel as well as ordering that serving members retake the Armed Forces Oath, swearing allegiance to the Theocratic Republic of Seaforth. The orders carried with them a 24 hour window for compliance. Military personnel not retaking the oath or failing to return to Seaforth would be designated at a rogue unit, it's members charged with treason. The issuing of these orders have caused a significant upheaval within the military. Scattered reports indicate that within the navy, mutiny and other violence have erupted on several ships as it's personnel fight to determine the ultimate allegiance of their vessels. There is one report of Royal Navy Vessels firing upon each other in the western Great North Sea, though that report is at present unconfirmed. Throughout the day, observers also noted several squadrons of various aircraft types taking flight from Royal Air Forces bases in Seaforth, landing in the Seaforth Sector of the Illumic East base, shared with East Moreland. Seaforth, Exiled No More Brigadier General Joshua Rhodes With his declared intentions to return to Seaforth and free his nation from the crimes of the Seaforth Catholic Church, Brigadier General Joshua Rhodes is rapidly putting together a fighting force for deployment into Seaforth. The core of this force will consist of the Seaforth Foreign Legion. The SFL, now commonly referred to as The Wolf Legion, has displayed remarkable loyalty to General Rhodes, stemming from his assumption of command of the unit, while under fire, during the treacherous attack by Veroveren troops in Safraen. Rapidly consolidating the survivors of the SFL, he was able to rally the soldiers and turn a deadly ambush into a stunning victory, saving many lives in the process. Though there has been no announcement from either the Rokkenjiman Empire or Seaforth-In-Exile, a sharp eyed clerk in the Seaforth-In-Exile's Royal Navy Department Of Personnel noticed the following entry in this mornings ledger entry. Anselmo, E. Commissioned S/Lt. Royal Navy. January 22, 2015. The Department of Personnel was unavailable for comment. First Female Warship Captain In other naval news, Grand Admiral McKenna assigned the first female in the Royal Navy to command of a Warship. Commander Josee Kurtz has assumed command of the Invictus Class HMS Halifax .  "Commander Kurtz is a fine naval officer and fully qualified to command based on experience, seamanship and temperment. I know she will bring honour to herself, her ship and the Royal Navy." Commander Kurtz and the HMS Halifax are assigned to the Illumic Channel and are expected to see combat in the liberation campaign, which would also make her the first female captain to engage in combat. When asked about this dual honour, Commander Kurtz commented: "Combat is nothing new. I have been to war. I have been in combat. This will be the first time I am in command of a ship, leading it into a war though. It does make it easier knowing that I am headed into a warzone. I am ready. My sailors are ready. My ship is ready. We will engage the enemy and we will prevail."

Red And Black Are The Colours Of Victory! East Moreland's Red Legion and our own Blackwatch have once again teamed up for an impressive win. The two special operations units, with support from the loyalist faction successfully executed the liberation of the captured battleship TRN Carolina. The Carolina, originally captured earlier this year by the same two groups during the Rishi Island Conflict, was repaired in Halifax and was awaiting transfer back to Transvaal when the SCC rose to power. With the SCC pressing any available hulls into wartime service, the loyalist faction could not allow the church to gain possession over such a battleship. It is expected that the TRN Carolina, now sailing under it's own power and escorted by East Moreland and Seaforth naval vessels will make the trip to Illumic East where she will finally be returned to Transvaal by the two allies, mending fences and showing respect to their Illumic Channel neighbour, the Trade Empire of Transvaal.

Mixed Triathlon Team Disqualified The mixed triathlon team from Seaforth was disqualified after a bronze medal performance in the IO Games in East Moreland. Post competition tests detected the presence of pseudoephedrine, a banned substance, in the samples taken from athlete Anna Fraser. Fraser, in a tearful press conference stated that there had been a mixup in the types of cold medication she was allowed to take before competing. While the brand name "Sudafed" is commonplace there are different formulas available on the market and she inadvertently consumed the formula containing pseudoephedrine. The ephedrine brand, a white package with green colouring closely resembles the non-epherdrine package which is also white with a different shade of green on the package. Fraser offered apologies to her team mates, the IO Games and the citizens of Seaforth along with a promise to more closly check her medication in the fututre. The disqualification elevates the team from UNP to claim the bronze medal. Fraser offered congratulations to the UNP team for a well run, "clean" race. |

Victory At Sea! Loyalist Forces scored a major victory today in the Illumic Channel. Three older class frigates were engaged and sunk by loyalist ships in "The Eventide" off the coast of Scotia Province. These three frigates represent a large portion of the SCC Fleet, though they are not the most advanced ships operated by the SCC. Joshua Rhodes Pulls Back Fresh from victory in southern Caledonia, Joshua Rhodes was forced to pull back from the Crowsnest Pass in the face of heavy resistance by the SCC. Outnumbered 3:1, the battle raged for several hours with the loyalist forces under constant attack from SCC aircraft and gunships. Though the loyalists inflicted heavy casualties on the SCC troops themselves, the loyalists were pulled back to "preserve unit integrity and fighting capability". While SCC losses are not known at this time, estimates place the number at around 3000. They loyalists took casualties of 2000 men and women. In the wake of the loyalist withdrawl, Joshua Rhodes ordered bridges blown and the pass sealed off by causing rockslides. This move, while preventing continued advance up the coast by land, preserves the gains made in Caledonia so far. Military analysts around the world are calling Joshua's decisions during the battle to be "unfortunate, yet prudent" and seems to reinforce the perception that General Rhodes is one of the most capable combat officers in Mundus. From one analyst: "I don't know of any other living person that could have gone up against 3:1 odds and come out with so few casualties, though they were significant losses. That he could keep control of his forces in the face of the enemy and proceed with an organized withdrawl, not to mention have the wherewithal to strategically cut off the pass and preserve his gains is amazing. What he has done here is divide the SCC forces. The heavily defended coastal provinces will not be able to reinforce the interior without moving all the way back up the coast, through 'The Towers' and then south through Arc-Royal to Strathcona, while the coast provinces themselves are still open to amphibious assault. I don't know whether that was his intention all along, or whether is was just an opportunity he seized upon in the heat of battle...but either way it was a brilliant strategic move." |

Ndambian Troops Released In the wake of the escalating situation in Ndambia in regards to Zachachevania aggression, General Joshua Rhodes has issued a statement releasing any and all Ndambian troops currently on operations in Seaforth to return home with all due honour. "The Ndambian troops came to Seaforth to help us in our hour of need. I will forever be grateful for their efforts in freeiing my nation from the grip of the SCC. They fought with courage and with honour. There was no request from Ndambia, either officially or unofficially to release these troops from service in Seaforth. I simply cannot, in good conscience, ask these troops to continue to serve in Seaforth while their own nation is under threat in an escalating situation." The Towers Fall! After a week of heavy fighting against a determined and overwhelming enemy in The Towers, Seaforth troops under the command of General Joshua Rhodes, sortied out from their defensive positions in a blitzkrieg attack of unsuspecting SCC positions. Not expecting the brazen counter attack, after almost a week on the defensive, the SCC was caught out of position and slow respond. After opening up the SCC lines with armoured units and helicopter gunships, mechanized and foot infantry surged forward to expand the gap and take the SCC positions. A limited counter attack was attempted by the SCC, but was quickly destroyed by loyalist forces. With the front line disintegrating, the SCC continued to reinforce piecemeal and the loyalist forces were able to engage the SCC units in smaller more manageable formations. The net result is the total collapse of the eastern front with surviving units falling back to Seaforth Province and the capital, where it is expected that they will attempt to make a final stand. Reports indicate that, due to the rapid speed of the attack, several SCC artilley and supply units were captured fully intact. Very disturbing is the unconfirmed report that the SCC was about to employ "Special Munitions" against the loyalist troops. The report indicated that artillery shells containing Lassa-IV biowarfare warheads as well as Cyclosarin, a member of the G-series of chemical weapons most recently used in the alleged attacks by the "Sorority of Materna".  General Rhodes later confirmed the capture of biological and chemical weapons. "This is the final loss of honour. That the SCC would order the use of biological and chemical weapons, and that the officers and men under their command would follow those orders is the final debasement of the SCC cause. Thier is no coming back now. No appeal. The complete disregard for the civilians who would have died in these biological and chemical attacks...it's so beyond the pale that I don't know if true justice can be found in this life. |

Dartfordian Company Lands Contract Foreign Secretary Raynald Lachlan announced today that LS Railways of Dartfordia has been awarded a rail and tunnel contract to connect the Seaforth mainland to the City of Rhodesia. While the government will continue to deploy modules via drop at sea, the new rail system and station will give the government the ability to quickly move people, equipment and supplies to the underwater city. The first point was the announcement that the CSS Exodus, the first of the Modular Submersible Capital Ships was set to begin sea trials while a previously unknown accompanying class was to begin construction. The Exodus, whose capabilities were until now, a closely guarded secret is going to sea with some of the most state of the art weapons and modules, one of which is a Seaforthian version of the "Yama's Messenger". Indeed, the railgun technology was licensed by Seaforth and Dartfordian experts were retained to provide expert advice on the project. Another capability of note is the impressive test depth now attainable due to Seaforth's cutting edge hull technology. Full capabilities of the Exodus Class and her companion Sovereign Class are detailed in the report.  Exodus Class Sovereign Class Current planned projections over the next years are to construct 16 of the Exodus Class and 32 of the Sovereign Class while phasing out the Seawolf and Vanguard class submarines currently in service. Grand Admiral McKenna stated that "while the surface fleet remains am important aspect of national defense, like the City of Rhodesia, Seaforth's naval future lies in the ocean depths." Following the news of new naval procurement, Secretary of Finance and Trade Mark Carney went into some detail regarding assets seized from the SCC and other economic measures. The crowd was stunned when Mr. Carney revealed that total assets, after 1000 years of banking, are estimated to be in the neighbourhood of 387 Billion Crowns. In addition to paying for the massive overhaul of the navy, several billion will be earmarked for army and air force projects as well. While national defense will eat up a portion of the windfall, the lions share of the funds are to be allocated to rebuilding the national infrastructure, providing no interest loans to small business, subsidizing post secondary education and agricultural business and several other programs designed to support and promote the citizens of Seaforth. The economic plan, named EP-12 broke down the allocations as follows. 200 Billion to domestic assistance programs and stimulation packages, 10 billion to the Mundus Development Bank, 50 Billion is earmarked for a "Heritage Fund" to gather interest and act as a stop gap for unanticipated economic shortfalls and the remaining 127 Billion for military procurement. EP-12 was met with rave reviews from most economists. While some questioned why the military would receive such a huge influx of cash and hardware, they did acknowledge that the stimulus to the contracting sector would provide jobs and wealth to a not-insignificant sector of the workforce. Archon Rhodes, during question period, clarified the army and air force projects. Tenders will be issued for the purchase and/or development of helicopter gunships for the army and the purchase and/or development of strategic bombers for the air force. The last part of the statement dealt with foreign investment. Mr. Carney revealed that Seaforth would be reducing or dropping tariffs on a large cross section of foreign goods, reducing or eliminating barriers to foreign investment in Seaforth, much like East Morelands Technology City, and issuing attractive immigration opportunities to skilled and educated foreign workers. |

Political Moves In Seaforth Archon Joshua Rhodes accompanied by his fiance, will be emarking under a semi world tour in the comming weeks. A tentative itinerary includes a visit to Transvaal, a stop-over in Illumic East before arriving in East Moreland for the 1 year birthdays of Prince Caspian and Princess Rhiannon. The Bear Roars! Named in honour of the late Josiah II of Seaforth, Colonel Eric Fallstaff (Army) and Captain Kira Fallstaff (Navy) have founded the third of Seaforth's clans. Owing much to the late King's patronage and mentorship, Eric Fallstaff served in a combat role directly under Josiah II, while Kira Fallstaff was appointed Ambassador to the CIS by the King himself. While Eric Fallstaff continues to serve in a combat command, Kira Fallstaff will take on the role of Primus of Clan Ghost Bear and serve on the Grand Council in addition to her duties as Ambassador, CIS.

Diamond Strike In The Illumic Channel! The Polar Ice Diamond Company announced today that it has been successful in it's attempts to exploit a significant diamond deposit in the Illumic Channel. It's underwater mining ship the Polar Ice is expected to bring in approximately 250,000 carats of diamonds annually. While this initial strike is located within the Seaforth EEZ, a second, larger deposit is rumoured to have have been located outside the Seaforth EEZ. While the Polar Ice Diamond Company refused to comment on the supposed second deposit, it is of note that Seaspan Inc. has accepted a contract for a second diamond dredger capable of operating in deeper waters and at a faster rate. |

First Exodus and Sovereign Class Submarines Complete Trials The first of Seaforth's next generation submersibles have completed sea trials and are currently en route to their designated assignments. Military analysts agree that with the political and military situation developing in the Supreme Empire of the North (SEN), the first likely assignment of these vessels would be to the Northern Fleet. After months of a communications blackout, intermittent contact with SEN outposts has been reestablished. While CFB Resolute was not rendered incommunicado, it is believed that EW units based in CFB Resolute actively prevented electronic communications from leaving the nation in an attempt to contain whatever situation has developed and preventing the presumed conflict from escalating outside of SEN territory. Clan Grey Fox  In other news today Colonel Scott Carroll, current commander of the Seaforth Highlanders and The Citadel roommate of Archon Joshua Rhodes was granted the right to found his own clan. Colonel Carroll came quickly to the point when announcing his clan and did not answer any questions regarding it's chosen name. As the Grand Council continues to steadily increase, the nation is also preparing to enter into provincial elections. Many prospective candidates for Premier are currently holding back from throwing their hats into the ring, holding out for a Clan and a seat on the Grand Council. Political Campaigns Heat Up With the Federal Grand Council quickly forming up, the Premier Elections are also gathering steam. Today, SNN is going to introduce and highlight three candidates we feel voters and the world should keep an eye on. Our first candidate is arguably the most well known. The founder of the Peoples Liberation Army of Seaforth, Kayru Iksur led a successful guerilla campaign against SCC forces in the province of Scotia. A province he now hopes to lead as Premier. Mr. Iksur's other notable achievement is getting the PLAS admitted into Socialist International, an international organization of socialist parties founded by Quinntopia, Vendosia and Nueva Ardia. While his political opponents have questioned his party about being under the influence of foreign socialist governments, Mr. Iksur's charisma and speaking ability have allowed his to deftly handle such questions. Very much a "gras roots" campaign, Mr. Iksur's schoolyard speeches are highly effective and he is gaining much support in Scotia Province.  The polar opposite to Mr. Iksur, Constantine Brady is a sour countenance, beratting the people of Arc-Royal from an ultra-right-wing pulpit. Unfortunately, with the troubles of the SCC still fresh in many minds, his narrow minded fervor has found purchase in the province. Significant action during the SCC trouble, in addition to honourable service prior to retirement, has given Mr.Brady a certain authenticity that droves of voters have been quick to latch onto. It should also be noted that Mr. Brady has surrounded himself with able staffers who have, in the past few weeks, managed to soften his image and make Mr. Brady much mor palatable to the general populace, though I daresay his political views remain the same.  The final candidate we feel should be closely watched is Mayor Naheed Nenshi of Halifax. Witty and well dressed, an acedemic with a sharp sense of humour Mr. Nenshi is the first Muslim elected to be mayor in a major city in tyhe Illumic Region. Indeed, even through his acerbic leadership style, Nenshi is generallt regarded as "an urban visionary who doesn’t neglect the nitty-gritty of local government,” a recent award citation says, as well as “For many in the Illumic Channel and Western Coft Aranye, Mayor Nenshi is a role model for decisive management, inclusivity and forward planning.” Although the elections of the previous candidates, Mr. Iksur and Mr. Brady are expected to be close-run affairs, political commentators are expecting Nenshi to win in Caledonia in a true landslide.

Dr. Coralee Campbell of Eventide University and Seaforth's representative to CETO had formed what some are already describing as the "Academics Clan". Dr. Campbell chose this emblem for the newest Clan.  Dr. Campbell said she chose the emblem "To represent the tree of knowledge, to show how science and learning can be used both for good works and ill. Worlds Largest Container Ship Launched In a partnership between Mundus Shipping Company (MSC) and Seaspan Inc. the two companies jointly announced the launch of the MSC Cross Straits, the worlds largest shipping vessel. The vessel has an overall length of 1300 ft (396m) and a carrying capacity of 19,224 standard containers, also known as SeaCans. To put this into perspective, the MSC Cross Straits can carry the equivalent of over 39,000 cars or 120 million pairs of sneakers. Seaspan CEO Daniel Sinclair was quick to praise his people for their ingenuity and hard work and when asked if the MSC Cross Straits would be the new norm for shipping vessels he quickly replied: "Heavens no. There is a place for the Cross Straits, a niche to be filled, just as the is a purpose for smaller vessels. Port facilities, coastal approaches, tidal actions, all play a roll in what ships are able to dock at which ports. I imagine the Mundus Shipping Company will employ the MSC Cross Straits in the largest of shipping contracts and make port in the largest national harbours, the 'main ports of call' if you will." |

Official Statement Once again, the issue of whaling has arisen on Mundus. The circumstances in this instance are much different. In the instance of Toshikawa and my own nation of Seaforth, whaling for subsistence had long since gone out of practice with whaling occuring only for profit from by products and a small amount of meat destined for specialty restaurants. In the face of this Seaforth made the decision to terminate the whale hunt and re purpose those assets and vessels towards more traditional fishing activities. This is not the case in the case of the villages of Mikberg and Sputswald in Nya Aland. In this instance the people of those villages are embarking on traditional hunt for the purpose of providing for their populations. A hunt that has not taken place since 1988. 27 years without taking a single whale. Now this proposed hunt seems to take into account the status of the pilot whales and appears to be monitored in good order by the government of Nya Aland. Many people will have differing opinions of this whaling practice, and though I applaud Queen Matilda and her good work with the Wild Mundus Organization, in this instance I cannot speak against it at this time. I also support the rights of protesters to oppose this hunt with available civilian vessels. What I will speak out against is the Kingdom of Dartfordia using what is essentially military force to impose it's will against Nya Aland. The Dartfordian Ministry of Defence confirmed today that three ships would be dispatched to the southern Sea of Alucard to join the Wild Mundus Organisation’s attempts to lure whales away from the beaches of Nya Åland to prevent their slaughter. HMY Dartania, the Royal Yacht, HMDS Warwick, a Wilmington Class Survey Vessel, and HMDS Goliath, a patrol vessel, will all be arriving at the desired location in the coming days. This continues the disturbing trend Dartfordia has embarked on starting with the unfortunate happenings in regards to The Dijeli Federations CMZ. I would implore all nations that feel they have a stake in this whale hunt, either for or against, to refrain from sending armed vessels into the area and specifically to refrain from sending armed vessels into the EEZ of a sovereign nation. Battle In The North The Confederate Navy, in recognition of Seafoth's treaty with the Supreme Empire of the North, has engaged in armed conflict with Order of the Watch naval forces currently blockading the nation. Personally led by Grand Admiral McKenna, the North Fleet is tasked with breaking the blockage of SEN and regaining access to CFB Resolute. Early reports indicate severe damage was dealt to the OW Blockage in the first combat actions of the new Exodus and Sovereign submarines. McKenna Named To Security Council In what some are now calling the CISecurity Council, both Achkaerin and Seaforth were named to the security council along with Odmony who is currently in discussions to join the CIS. Grand Admiral McKenna, who announced earlier today that he will be retiring from the Confederate Navy will serve as Seaforth's delegate to the Security Council as well as maintaining his position on Seaforth's Grand Council. The Department of the Navy announced that Admiral Hannibal Kane, a longtime associate and protege of McKenna's has been promoted to Grand Admiral and head of the Navy. Harper To Nya Aland In a surprise announcement, Harper Rhodes has been named as Seaforth's Grand Marshal to the Nya Aland whale hunt. In her first public engagement after the Eugenics War and subsequent treatment in Achkaerin, Harper will oversea the hunt to ensure the whalers compliance with conditions and procedures established for the hunt. In a brief statement, Harper was quoted as saying " I am really looking forward to getting out into the world again and acting as Grand Marshal to a nation that shares a love of the sea with Seaforth is an exciting opportunity. Grand Council Full, Elections Underway With the Grand Council fully formed, the provincial elections for Premier has begun. Seaforth Heads To Ostlake Games The Grand Council has conformed that members of all three branchs of the Seaforth Armed Forces will be attending the invitation only competition in East Moreland. A mixture of sporting and military competitions several noteworthy competitors from Seaforth bear watching. Blackwatch 22 will be competing in the Team FIBUA, with their commander, Command Master Sargeant Tamerlane Church competing in the individual FIBUA. Inspired by the participation of the East Moreland Royal Family, General Rhodes himself will be entering the "Shoot and Scoot" and will be the second entry in the individual FIBUA and has apparently been working very hard to get into top shape.  Also from the Rhodes family, Colonel Andrew Rhodes will be entering into the Rifle Shooting competition and will be captaining Seaforth's river crossing team.  Another entry to watch for is Master Chief Samuel Dap who will be entering the boxingcompetition as a heavyweight.  While Chief Dap hasn't weight in officially, his service record indicates he is 6'6" tall and weighs in at 285 lbs as of a year ago. We managed to catch up to General Rhodes as he was training for the Ostlake games (See above picture)and during reps answered a few questions. "Who let you guys in here?" (Laughing) "Your cousin was kind enough to hold the door, General." "Fair enough. What can I do for you?" "You are obviously training for the Ostlake Games, any comment?" "This is a great opportunity to blow off some steam, engage in some friendly competition with our allies and show off our stuff?" "How do you think Seaforth will do?" "You know the saying, 'Any given Sunday'. Every team entered is strong, part of a modern military and we have all worked with each other before. It's anyone's to win." "I noticed you are competing directly against Princess Freya in the individual FIBUA. You worried?" Neural Interface Breakthrough Researchers at Eventide University have made an extraordinary breakthrough in brain neural interfaces this week. In a spin off technology project from the TALON battle suit program, a specialized team under the direction of Dr. Richard Anderson allowed quadriplegic Erik Sorto to drink his first beer in 12 years. Not only did quadriplegic Erik Sorto just drink himself his first beer in twelve years, he demonstrated the ability to control the precise activity of single neurons in his brain with specific thoughts. The implications of this — namely the ability to control entire complex remote actions with single glorified neurons — now drives the field into fascinating new territory.  The algorithms used to control the robotic arm based on the signals extracted by Erik’s implant were developed in Richard Anderson’s lab at Eventide. Anderson has been studying these more posterior areas in monkeys for decades, and probably knows more about what neurons in this area can do than anyone around. He has shown not only that spikes in posterior parietal cortex (PPC) neurons directly encode high-level features of many kinds of stimuli, but also encode plans for movement, and probably even more abstract cogitations like intents and goals. With a plan to put a couple 96-spot electrode arrays into Erik’s PPC, and surgeon Charles Liu on hand to do the dirty work, the team set out to find the ideal spot to drop in the hardware. Although the cortex has about 3 ft. square of total area, only a fraction of that is available to cleanly land dueling 4mm x 4mm arrays on its surface. Due to the high bandwidth of these devices — approximately 200 electrodes recording the activity of possibly even more individual neurons putting out spikes that need to be sorted, isolated and time stamped with millisecond accuracy — compact wireless solutions are not yet an option. Until leading manufacturers of these kinds of devices, like Blackrock Microsystems, go wireless, the arrays will still need to be locally connectorized and tethered to the external world.  For placing the arrays, the team had Erik imagine reaching and grasping while they took a preliminary peak at his brain with fMRI. They found a ‘reach’ area in the left superior parietal lobule (putative human area 5d) and a ‘grasp’ area at the junction of the intraparietal and postcentral sulci (putative human anterior intraparietal area, AIP). With everything later installed, the team found they could read out both the trajectory and the velocity of the desired movement. They could therefore determine when and how fast Erik wanted to make a movement. They could also distinguish which hand Erik wanted to move to a specific location, which suggests it shouldn’t be too difficult to animate bilateral robotic arms. While it is clear that recording from the PPC had clear advantage for making smooth movements, the real magic of the study was the ease in finding the single neurons that could be put under volitional control. Incredibly, within minutes of plunking down and activating an implant that targets just 100 neurons out of 100 billion, a subject can now voluntarily modulate the activity of some of those cells and see their output on the screen in front of them. One of Erik’s cells, for example, would spike faster when he imagined a shoulder rotation, and slower when he imagined touching his nose. Another cell would turn on when he imagined moving his hand to his mouth, but not moving to the ear or chin. One could reasonably claim that having extreme degree personal intimacy on tap is something beyond man. What awaits, which we will now briefly detail, are superpowers nothing short of godlike. Namely, the ability not just to stumble upon a few neurons out of the lot that do some aspect of something you desire, but potentially the ability to turn nearly any neuron towards any end. Not only that, but do it near effortlessly and practically instantaneously. What is the evidence, one might ask, that this is possible? Furthermore, how exactly do we do it? As far back as 1969, researchers found that they could control the firing rate of specific neurons in monkey brains by giving them appropriate feedback. In this case, the neurons were in a region already known to do certain things, and the feedback was geared towards that activity. Unfortunately, the researchers could not explicitly ask the monkey to describe how it achieved any particular result. Someone outfitted like Erik, on the other hand, can do more then tell the researchers what is going on — they can feel it, and moreover, they can control it.  What should astound us, is that researchers have more recently been able to tap into brain activity at levels below the spikes of neurons and reinforce specific subthreshold patterns of activity. These are the neural whisperings at the synaptic scale, the background which may or may not eventually produce a spike in any given case. In April of last year Seaforth researchers found the first clear evidence that an animal can rapidly learn to reinforce precise patterns of synaptic activity in single cells to achieve a particular result. Specifically, these researchers persuaded cells in the hippocampus of a mouse to reorganize their fine scale structure, and subsequent local electrical activity, to ensure the mouse received a pleasurable stimulus to an area in their lateral hypothalamus. For these experiments, the stimulus is a mild electrical current that the mice clearly pursue and enjoy. What’s more, that same month researchers at Eventide extracted the same kinds of volitionally cultivated subthreshold signals. This is fairly heady stuff here, but we want to continue with a little bit more jargon just for this one final example. These guys trained mice to modulate the neural activity in a 150um square patch of their somatosensory cortex up or down in response to the changing pitch of an auditory cue. We should note that the mice obliged after just a few days of the training. Importantly, imagine how fast this could be done with a human subject instead. A human talking to him- or herself would be instantly trained compared to operantly conditioning a mouse in a box. The interesting part here, is that the Eventide researchers optically recorded the subthreshold activity. The amount of information available optically dwarfs mere electrical signals recorded as spikes and subthreshold potentials at a few specific electrode locations. In other words, they were looking at ‘everything’ that happened in that little patch in the touch sensory cortex of mice. There are not that many neurons in an area that tiny. To think that they could be influenced so easily, and apparently arbitrarily (they used an auditory signal, no less, as the stimulus), is mind boggling. Where the experiments with Erik already have a bandwidth problem with the trickle of data from a handful of spiking neurons, moving to the all-optical BCIs now envisioned to move the field forward will create a data flood. When the hardware reaches a point that it can handle this flood, we will have a pretty slick, fully functional BCI on our hands.

Greenpeace Shows Its Ugly Side In response to comments made by Greenpeace Managing Director Jim Murphy, General Joshua Rhodes refused to mince words in his own statement regarding the Nya Aland whale hunt. "The comments made by Mr. Murphy are cruel, no doubt about it. To equate the untold suffering and bloodshed experienced by all of Seaforth, and my sister in particular to the Nya Aland whale hunt is vindictive and crass. Im not surpsrised though. Dartfordians have a long and illustrious history of attacking and vilefying anyone that holds a differing point of view or anything that doesnt conform to thier view of the world. To imply my dear sisters bloodlust was not sated my the deaths if thousands of her own people and must now be slaked with the blood if the whales is utterly contemptable and I demand an apology from Mr. Murphy." Since the statement by Mr. Murphy, Seaforthian donations to Greenpeace has all but stopped and several protests have broken out across Seaforth. One of the more charming protests has Seaforthians barring placards saying "Save The Whales!" while depicting obese Dartfordians in skimpy bathing attire, and similar.

The Results Are In! Following a true political free for all, the polls are closed and the ballots have been counted. The results are both expected and surprising. The big winners are the candidates from the Loyalist Party, right leaning centralists that have long supported Archon Joshua Rhodes, both during the Eugenics War and in the reformations that followed. Naheed Nenshi was elected in a landslide in Caledonia while the loyalist party also gained victories in the more evenly contested provinces of Seaforth, Northumbria and Strathcona. With a communist and a fascist both elected as premiers it is bound to make the political landscape of the Seaforth Confederation interesting to say the least. Following the elections of Seaforth's Premiers a man from Coventry has startled the nations be claiming to be the King of Seaforth. Richard Butler is making the claim that he is the second son of King William III and thus the younger brother of King Cristian II. The death of King Christian and his young family was thought to have ended the royal line of the Camerons and touched off the Seaforth Civil War that culminated in the rise of House Rhodes as the new royal house. Mr. Butler (his mother's surname) has apparently submitted his claim and the corresponding documents to the Royal Heraldric Society for verification, including a birth certificate that names him Richard Cameron. If his claim is proved to be legitimate, it would mean that he could ascend the throne of Seaforth as King Richard V. There has been no comment from Archon Rhodes or the Grand Council. |
