To follow with the Speaker election format - and the Speaker's request: I beg to move that Senate elects a member to serve in the position of Deputy Speaker.

Pardon me, but the Deputy Speaker is currently appointed by the Speaker.

Never mind the fact that the position is not established by law. I suggest that if the majority of Senators find this method unsatisfactory, they make a motion to change this internal operating procedure.

I would like to put myself forward for this, if this selection format stands, although I would support a motion to formally establish a procedure for this.

Personally, as one might expect, I would prefer that the Speaker be allowed to appoint his own deputy from among the Senators. I think this is a simpler and better procedure, allowing the Speaker to choose someone he can work well with.

However, if the Senators disagree I have no objection to having an election for the office.

An alternative suggestion perhaps...what if the Senate merely approves the Speaker's nomination?

Consider the motion thirded. I don't feel an election process for the Deputy Speaker is necessary and feel it should remain a position appointed by the Speaker.

I find the suggestion put forward by Elpidia acceptable since it retains the Senate's trust in the speakers judgement (and we do elect the speaker so we should trust his or her judgement when it comes to the appointment of their deputy) Also with the Senate approval factor any note of discord with the choice of deputy speaker can still be voiced.

With four seconds the motion carries. I'll be presenting my choice for Deputy Speaker within a day or two, for the Senate's approval.
