JUS ARRIVES IN AETERNUM; DIPLOMATIC TALKS TO BEGIN

NAVIN, AETERNUM - Aeviternus Daniel Jus arrived by plane in Aeternum today with the intent to discuss foreign policy, the current global political climate, and how the two nations can work together and ensure communication between governments.

"To even visit Aeternum is an important step for Dominiscian foreign relations," Jus said. "Our nations have always been peaceable, but it is essential that we form closer bonds with the rest of Southern Cotf Aranye starting with our closest neighbor."

This marks the first time in over a decade where the Dominiscian and Aeternumese heads-of-states have met in person in an official capacity. Some commentators have speculated if Jus plans on stepping outside of the traditional comfort zone that Dominiscius has created for itself.

"Aeternum is a regional power that may be essential to Dominiscius's future," Peter Curius, political pundit and analyst, said. "Our economies may be of comparable sizes, but their industrial sector outclasses ours two-to-one. Simply creating a spirit of cooperation would benefit us immensely."

After meeting with Premier Zhou, Jus plans on taking a short visit to the Dominiscian embassy in Aeternum to thank the employees for their service to their nation.

INTERNATIONAL WAR ON HORIZON; DOMINISCIUS REMAINS INDEPENDENT OF CONFLICT

With the coup of the Themata government at the hands of Soviet forces, the international community is preparing for what seems inevitably to be war. With few interests in the Ardian continent, the Office of The Aeviternus released a statement condemning the hostile takeover, but made it clear that Dominiscius would not be involved.

The concern of the Department of Diplomacy is that conflict may come directly to the Cotf Aranye continent. A source within DoD that requested to remain anonymous told the Viscuria Herald that the government is keeping a close eye on the situation in case conflict spreads, and that the Civilis Militare has been placed on alert in case of a regional conflict.

The Orthodox Church has offered no official statement apart from their continued condemnation of violence and the loss of life.

EDITORIAL: NATIONAL SENATUS WRONG TO QUESTION MARRIAGE

Of the many institutions in our culture, marriage is one of the most important. It is the foundation of our families and must be maintained and respected to ensure our children grow up in a loving home. You can understand my shock when I learned that the National Senatus is actually discussing a piece of legislation that would recognize the homosexual marriages of couples from other nations!

People, this is outrageous! Our national laws are built on Scripture, and that must remain unchanged! There is a good reason why our nation requires fault in divorce cases and adultery is criminalized, and that is because divorce and adultery destroy families and tear apart homes. To weaken our marriage laws is the first step towards creating sexual anarchy in our nation.

By the way, this is legislation that was forwarded on to our government by Senator Sator and a Father from the Church! They drafted the idea at the Conference on Universal Rights, which now we know was nothing more than a way to try and shove gay marriage on the countries of this world. I hope you will write Mr. Sator a note telling him to get back to the capitol and reject this legislation!

Mr. Charles Ides is an electrician from Viscuria. He is 31 and lives with his wife, Ester.

The Viscuria Herald contacted the Lobby for Love and Liberties (LLL), which lobbies on behalf of the LGBT community in Dominiscius. Their response to the legislation was that "We are welcoming of anything that would bring some recognition to homosexual marriage, but we are confounded that the National Senatus would consider granting more rights to foreign nationals in Dominiscius than to its own people."

CONTROVERSIAL VOTES IN NATIONAL SENATUS; TREATY FAILS TO PASS

VISCURIA - Senator Miles Sator arrived from the Conference on Universal Rights yesterday to vote on the treaty this morning, where it unanimously failed. Senator Miles expressed disappointment concerning the final copy of the treaty, but said that it was worthwhile to be present.

"Ultimately this government could not sign a document that would compel us to recognize gender reassignment as a right," Sator said. "However, Father Haveo and I made Dominiscian values very clear, that we are dedicated to rights that truly matter, and that we believe stronger efforts should be made to help the impoverished."

Father Haveo could not be reached for comment, but a Church spokesman explained its position. "Many articles in the treaty were intolerable when held to the light of Dominiscian beliefs, while failing to truly protect the life of all individuals. It would have been irresponsible to sign a document that impose foreign ideologies on our people, while not protecting the rights we hold most dear."

However, some Dominiscian law was altered in a minor, pared-down bill dealing with foreign homosexual couples. The legislation does not provide legal recognition to same-sex couples that immigrate to Dominiscius, but does allow the government to recognize the marriage of same-sex couples who stay temporarily or travel through Dominiscius.

"The new law is purely practical," said Senator Vivian Mare. "It would be illogical for us to some reason identify a same-sex married couple from another nation as two individuals without a legal union. Some legal complications have arose in the past where a partner in the union has become sick while here and the other person is not recognized as the spouse. This legislation will prevent that."

The bill passed 4-2, the dissenters being Senators Merkel and Ballo.

HERMAN NIX DOES IT; WINS FIRST DOMINISCIAN GOLD

ACHKAERIN - At first there was disappointment for Herman Nix, who had been a favorite in the Men's Downhill Skiing event but only took bronze. He quickly earned that coveted gold on the Super-G, marking the first Dominiscian gold in the event.

"I'm just absolutely thankful for the support of my family and my country," Nix said. "It took a lot of hard work and sacrifice to get here, and all the glory to the Lord who made this possible."

The gold victory in the Super-G moved him into second place in most career international skiing wins, after retired skier and international celebrity Ingemar Stenmark from the UNP.

Ann Collier shocked the skiing scene when the young woman took silver in the women's downhill event, as she had never placed in the top 5 of an international race before.

PREDICTIONS COME TRUE; RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE ASK OFF WORK

VISCURIA - As expected, employers across Dominiscius are reporting a record number of people either asking off work or calling in sick today due to the Doctor Who Season 8 premier. The Dominiscian Office of Employment Statistics (DOES) is busy gathering official numbers, but says that it will easily surpass the previous record from the season 7 premier.

"It's crazy, because many offices are closed on Saturdays anyways, so the potential number of people asking off work or calling in sick is smaller," said Clark Mensio, Director of the DOES. "But all the same, the record is being broken not only in percentage, but in total numbers. People just really want to see the new Doctor."

It was noted that Mensio only was able to keep his own employees around to chronicle the data by promising to TiVo the episode and have an office party to watch it together with free pizza, hamburgers, and refreshments.

"With all these people 'sick,' I guess the Doctor is what they really need," said Aeviternus Daniel Jus.

DOMINISCIUS SIGNS TREATY; KATAPULT FORMED

VISCURIA - The rhetoric coming from the capital is that it's not a military treaty, but a "proactive defense organization." Not everyone is so sure.

The significance of Dominiscius joining Aeternum in founding the Krimeon Anti-Terrorism and Peaceful Undertakings Legionary Team (KATAPULT) is not lost on anyone, as it is the first treaty unrelated to science or student exchange signed by the Dominiscian Empire in over three decades. The fact that it is a treaty pertaining to the armed forces is all the more historic considering the nation's traditionally pacifist foreign policy.

The political ramifications are sweeping but yet to be determined, as the majority and pacifist Dominiscian Conservative Coalition was split in its vote. Senator Miles Sator voted in favor of the treaty against his DCC comrades, joining the Citizens' Republican Party Senators Elijah Aquila and Vivian Mare. As with any tie in the Senatus, the deciding vote was given to the Aeviternus, who decided to pass and sign the treaty.

"My platform from the very beginning was to maintain our pacifist ideals while slowly breaking our isolationism from global politics," said Daniel Jus, Aeviternus. "With the signing of KATAPULT, we have held dear to our traditional beliefs of defending life, acting justly, yet following Pater's will to not commit needless violence."

Senator Jove Ballo of the Amicitia region, who was one of the three DCC Senators to vote against the treaty, made his opposition clear. "In my 41 years of public service I have never seen such a brazen disregard for Dominiscian values. I am disappointed that two men from the Conservative Coalition would steer us towards the rocks instead of the harbor."

Initial public polls are unsure of how to feel about the treaty. While Republicans overwhelmingly support the treaty, 40% of Conservatives oppose it, while 32% have expressed at least moderate support with the remaining 28% were undecided. Of the moderates polled there was a nearly 50-50 split.

One reason some Conservatives are tentatively approving of the treaty seems to be the nation's very favorable view of Aeternum, especially after its refusal to engage in the recent World War. However, even amongst those Conservatives there is a fear of the possibility of a different, more distant nation being accepted into the international organization.

The treaty was the outcropping of recent meetings between Aeternum's Premier Zhou and Aeviternus Jus. Those meetings also produced a agreement for there to drop trade barriers between the neighboring nations, which is expected to open up the vast Aeternumese markets to Dominiscian agriculture.

The Dominiscian Orthodox Church has not made a statement concerning KATAPULT.

DIPLOMATIC ISOLATION BROKEN AT LAST

VISCURIA - The Dominiscian Department of Diplomacy announced today that the government would be breaking the nearly year-long isolation of the nation from the outside world. After the signing of the KATAPULT treaty, which could have potentially committed Dominiscius to military engagements abroad, protests broke out across the nation.

In response to national discord the National Senatus has not yet repealed the treaty, but ordered diplomatic isolation for the nation essentially forbidding it from being enforced during that time. All embassies were closed, cultural exchange programs cancelled, and international travel was restricted to only the most essential individuals.

The affect on Aeviternus Daniel Jus's political career has already been profound, as the nation reacted poorly to his attempts to take a more assertive approach to foreign policy. He has spent the last eight months attempting to gain back the electorate's trust, especially amongst his own party's elite who were the most avidly opposed to the treaty.

Embassies will be reopened, but there is uncertainty concerning the renewed conservative foreign policies introduced in Dominiscius. As Mundus sees Dominiscius open its borders once again the reactions may be mixed.
