Elections Loom Closer

As the elections at the end of January for deciding the future of the Berrean Government nears, political tensions rise between parties. Accusations from Berrean Right at The Monarchial Pary and The Green Party on allegations of corruption and bypassing of political laws within parliament, allegations which the respective parties deny.
In other political news, top party members from the Monarchial and Green parties has also expressed concerns at the increased public support, especially in the south east of Berrean to communist group Peoples of Berrean. For the past 5 years, the Peoples of Berrean have held 4 government seats, and with agreements with BIP (holding 10 seats), have "often been a thorn in the progress of the country" according to a representative from the Berrean Monarchial Party.

Current predictions are looking to see a shocking decrease in support for the Monarchs, but apart from that it is believed that no other parties will see dramatic changes.

The Forty Eight Hours

As of 7PM Berrean Central Time, the polls opened up to voters, and will remain open for the next forty eight hours. Following tradition, the Ejinberg Government buildings have closed as the political parties take a short break whilst the votes are taken and counted. Predictions are looking at a weaker lead for the Monarchial Party despite recent pledges made by King James XVI to reduce the strictness on some laws that have reduced the civil rights of many citizens. After a recent massive voting campaign by the Peoples of Berrean Party, it is also predicted that votes will rise substantially for them, undoubtedly worrying the Greens and the Monarchs.
On terms of the voting turnout, it is believed that so far, the number of people to be voting will be up 1.4% from last term in 2010, something which the greater government has been working towards over the past five years.
An independent statistics provider has suggested the following outcome for Berrean:

(Party-predicted %/last term's %)
The Berrean Monarchial Party - 62%/71%
The Green Party - 22%/20%
Berrean Independence Party - 2%/3%
Berrean Right - 9%/4%
Peoples of Berrean - 5%/2%

However, the important results determining the outcome of Berrean for the next 5 years will no be revealed until tomorrow evening.

The Results

At 9PM on the 31st of January, the results of the 2015 elections were announced. The votes were surprisingly different compared to many of the predictions made, seeing a large increase in support for the BIP and PoB parties, especially in the southern border areas where support was also fairly strong. However, it is still King James XVI in power for at least the next 5 years, and many will be assured that he'll do all that is possible to keep this position. On a negative aspect for King James' future, is that it is likely he'll face a lot of opposition within the government, from the increasing strength of the parties that oppose him and his followers.

The vote percentages are as follows:
The Berrean Monarchial Party - 60%
The Green Party - 20%
Berrean Independence Party - 3%
Berrean Right - 8%
Peoples of Berrean - 9%

The country now looks towards Ejinberg House, and the government, to see their policies for the next office term. Will much change like it has in the last 5-15 years, will the monarchy still be leading the country in the next 5 years?

PLANS ANNOUNCED FOR NEW RAIL SYSTEM

Yesterday it was announced that the government plans to begin construction on a new inter-city high speed train network linking cities on either side of the country, and reducing journey times.
The maglev route, that has been debated for te past five years, as described by King James XVI's transport minister, Gret Jallabjorg will connect Haven der Nord in the west, to the capital, Jaart, and Lexu, Griesreg and Medir in the east. "The plan is to reduce transport times through the cities to encourage the use of public transport" a spokesperson said. The plan comes after large support from many residents across the country, especially businesses in some of the south and eastern areas of the country, however a significant percentage of people, particularly in the mountainous south west have been calling for a branch of the route to their areas, though the transport minister has expressed that a separate project in the future will accommodate these requests. Many citizens fear this planned development may come too late for them, warning that the area is a key industrial spot for the Berrean economy, and that lack of funds could lead to financial problems.
Further details of the route, including costs and potential features, will be shown and discussed in the coming weeks. It is predicted that opposition to this event will come primarily from some south western citizens, and some environmental activists, despite the Berrean Greens being in full support of the plan.

LANDSLIDE LEAVES FOUR DEAD
In the early hours of yesterday morning, a landslide led to the death of four motorists and injury of another three following heavy rain, and high winds over the past few days.
The landslide, which happened on the Hoch Kliffen 221Km NW of Ejinberg destroyed the Autoroute 21 between Ejinberg and Haven der Nord, as well as a section of branchline that connected nearby towns of Derjk and Austraf.
Despite tests on this very fragile area of coastline in the Autumn of 2014, it would seem that the force of the recent storm surpassed the minimum safety levels that is required for sections of coast with rail lines, motorways and other main infrastructure links. The government convened early yesterday morning, and again this morning, to organise recovery and construction teams in order to sort out the area. The Minister of transport herself, speaking yesterday evening, stated that this was the top priority, and the coastal safety scheme would be discussed when the current issue is sorted.

All the identities of the fatalities have yet to be identified, but one of the families of an injured motorist have expressed their concern at how a storm could surpass the health and safety laws, and are calling for increased focus on events like this, and how to prevent them in the future.

Following the landslide, the A21 suffered from 8Km tailbacks either way as teams failed to divert the large numbers of commuter and freight traffic. Train lines also suffered from relatively major delays of up to fifteen minutes thanks to diversions and replacement bus services to deal with the loss of the branchline. As a result of these issues, it was reported that rates of commerce in the capital dropped by 0.31% (greater than normal), and the Haven der Nord Docklands suffered a worrying decline in trade, which is expected to last from a week up to a month or more. Economists are worried that this could slow Berrean's economic growth substantially for the first quarter of 2015.

TWO WEEKS ON
On the 21st of February, a section of cliff bordering the Gulf of Safraen collapsed in the high waves of the winter storms leading to the deaths of four motorists.
The event came as much of a shock to many citizens, especially the citizens of Derjk and Austraf of which one of the deceased had just left. Following the initial shock, many expressed their anger and frustration that such a disaster could happen, especially on one of the main transport routes of the country.
The cliff collapse led to severe traffic problems on the autoroute and some delays on the main trainline and significantly reduced the GDP generated in the Capital and Haven der Nord in the following days. Other problems took a little while longer to become apparent. The docks at Haven der Nord were forced to close five days following the incident as freight transport into the country had slowed, and led to the port authorities running out of storage space, as announced on international news the following Wednesday. This, coupled with transport delays has been thought to have deprived the Berrean economy of more than a couple of hundred million Rees, a figure which does not include the costs to repair the damaged caused in this area by the storm.
Still sixteen days after the incident, the Autoroute 21 is down to single file traffic either way for that section of road as construction crews secure the road, and begin to construct a diversion route, which despite the Transport Minister diverting a substantial proportion of the transport budget, and workforce to the area, could still take a month or more to complete. Experts believe this section of road could lead to further losses in income for the next few months, as transport is re-established. However, the Transport Minister and King James XVI on separate occasions have stressed that the rail services have been increased to accommodate increased traffic, hoping to reduce the reliance in short and long term on the autoroute in this area.

Despite a lot of action seen here in the last two weeks and a lot of ideas and plans voiced by the government, it is expected to take a long time before services return to normal.

PARTY MEMBERS ARRESTED
Two raids were conducted yesterday on property of two members of the Berrean Communist party: Peoples of Berrean under allegations of corruption and accepting party donations. Donations and funds to political parties in Berrean has been outlawed since the civil unrest of the late 1980s and early 90s under the Revised Party Act of 1993. The Ejinberg Police Service were notified of possible illegal activity by the party around a month ago and steps were taken by the service to put the raids in to motion.
While the party members (who cannot be currently named) have been arrested, no evidence has so far been proven. The Chief of Ejinberg Police, Marten Helfdjeek announced that the Service will do all it can to put a stop to unfair movements of political parties, whilst opposition and critics of the current King James XVI government say this is deliberate suppression of a major political party to unfairly gain advantage over votes. Suspicions have also been raised about the timing of the raids - 18 days before planned protest marches over unfair government ruling in the capital and the main port city, Haven der Nord.
