BESHTAN RESISTANCE FRONT FACE THE BRINK

The Beshtan Resistance Front, the armed Beshtan nationalist and separatist organization which has plagued western Abhesha and Samsarah at large for decades, and most recently claimed responsibility for a deadly biological attack in the capital, is reportedly on the brink of defeat as Samsari forces from the 1st Mountain Division and the elite Special Airborne Duties Section invade their strongholds in the Shashmene mountains.

The BRF seeks independence via armed struggle for the ethnic Beshtan minority, whose homeland of Beshta forms the westernmost region of Abhesha state and Samsarah. Despite once significant support, the BRF lost much of their popular support among Beshtans after a string of terror attacks against the peaceful Beshtan Independence Party in the regional capital of Semien in 1989.

The Shashmene Mountains have hidden BRF remnants since a protracted campaign from 1991 to 2005 drove them from the main Beshtan Highlands. The BRF campaign continued in a low intensity fashion for the next decade while elements of the organization fought a factional conflict over their direction, while the military was reluctant to reassert control over the treacherous mountain region and it's guerrilla defenders.

Following a biological attack on Kyzylkorum last month which killed nearly three hundred, the military launched an offensive operation to eliminate the BRF from the Shashmene range. After heavy fighting, Samsari mountain troops have successfully seized much of the high ground from the insurgents and destroyed much of their cave tunnel network, waging a "cleansing campaign of counterinsurgency".

A HIND gunship, of the same kind pictured, was lost in combat with the BRF.

Despite these sucesses, BRF insurgents have inflicted nearly 100 army casualties, including 5 yesterday. Captain Eyasu Boghossian, Lieutenant Muhammad Gonchigsumlaa and Lieutenant Supra Chaudhuri were killed when their Mil Mi-24 gunship was hit by a FIM-92 Stinger missile. Sargeant Ashis Nandy and Private Sumit Sarkar were killed on patrol by an improvised explosive device (IED).

Sniper teams from elite Army regiments have fought tense duels with experienced insurgent counterparts.

Senior commanders expressed regret and condolences to the families of the deceased, and vowed the conflict would shortly be over, while confirming that a million Arak bounty has been placed on the head of Joram Gideonid, current BRF leader.

NASSA CORRUPTION TRIAL REACHES VERDICT: GUILTY
Posted Image
Ex-President Charles Nassa was found guilty of 89 counts of corruption in Kyzylkorum today, to the cheering of anti-corruption protesters outside. Nassa, who was President from 1997-2002, was aressted at his home last year following an extensive police investigation. He had been involved in plans to flee the country to escape charge.

Judge Simabassa, who presided over the trial, said "Charles Nassa took advantage of his position to seek gain for others, illegally accepted massive amounts of wealth from others and abused his powers, leading to major losses to public assets and to the interests of the state and people. His conviction today represents a triumph against corruption in our country and proves a new chapter has opened". Nassa, aged 67, was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment. Much of the money he funneled to offshore accounts has now been recovered, but millions remain unaccounted for.

NUEVA ARDIAN CARTELS LINKED TO DOMESTIC TERRORISTS

Separatist BRF terrorists are being financed by Nueva Ardian drug cartels, Secretary of National Security Mirsa Kalakani claimed today. The Beshtan Resistance Front, she alleges, traffics heroin to a number of cartels in Nueva Ardia, who then export it to global black markets. The BRF then uses the funds to acquire weapons and explosives. As a result, Nueva Ardian “narco-terrorists” represent “a clear and present danger” to Samsari national security, Kalakani stated.

Separatists bombed an Ashramabad hotel on Saturday.

Although the Shashmene Mountain Offensive has eliminated much of the BRF’s central infrastructure, a “significant” number of terrorist cells remain active within a number of urban areas throughout Samsarah, who are “still fully capable of undertaking terror attacks" like last weekend's Ashramabad hotel bombing, the Department of National Security claims.

ADDIS SIGNS ARDIAN ENTENTE DIRECTIVE DENOUNCING ZACHACHEVANIA; BACKS ULTIMATUM

Posted Image

Today, President Addis backed measures by the Ardian Entente to force an end to the conflict between Zachachevania and Nueva-Ardia, and ordered total mobilization of Samsari military assets not currently engaged in the Shashmene Mountains to meet the potential threat to the Commonwealth's southeastern borders posed by a retaliatory Zachachevanian incursion. In a statement, the President said:
Quote:

The Commonwealth has long desired a resolution to the war between it's eastern neighbors, but we will not accept the travesty of justice currently envisaged by Zachachevania in their proposed treaty to come to pass. Not only is the New Andean Republic entirely fabricated and illegitimate as a state, but it's establishment would advance the power and interests of Zachachevania; a state which clearly has no respect for the sovereignty of it's neighbors.

As a neighbor of Zachachevania ourselves, we strongly feel that the imperialist ambitions of that government must be restrained, and the territorial integrity of Nueva Ardia protected. Hence, my government signs this directive in the name of peace.

Leader of the Opposition, Rohit Sundarayya, also expressed his support:
Quote:

Zachachevania and it's foreign policy represent a constant danger to the security of this great nation. If we fail to act as part of the international community now, there may not be another chance to contain the Zachachevanian threat before their government decides to aggressively claim Samsari territory, as they have Nueva Ardian.

Evacuation measures have been undertaken throughout the sparsely populated, mountainous eastern border regions of Kazbekistan, with civilians being moved from the area further inland. As expected in such a circumstance, the precise nature of military movements have not been released to the media, though the armed forces are expected to adopt a defensive posture.

President Addis has also extended permission for Entente forces to deploy to and operate from the Commonwealth in support of the operation, should Zachachevania fail to back down. Regardless, the present manuevers represent the largest Commonwealth military operation for decades.

MINING PRIVATIZATION SCHEME CAUSES SPECUALATION, FRICTION

President Addis announced the beginning of a process to privatize “significant” proportions of Samsarah’s top four publically owned mining companies today, perhaps up to 74%. Epitha Mining Company, Sun Aluminium Ltd, The Kazbek Mining Conglomerate and Gupta Exploitations collectively dominate the Samsari mining field. However, all five have been involved in major scandals regarding union abuse, safety concerns and pay manipulation over the last ten years, and have been criticized for their consistently low productivity compared to targets.

Fears of union action have increased in recent months, with Sun Aluminium Ltd revealing last week that it had been threatened with industrial action by a consortium of five labour groups, all of which are opposed to greater private ownership.

The President has attempted to assuage these fears. Retrenchment of workers, Addis said, would be regulated against, with incentives offered to companies who, rather than trimming an inefficient workforce, re-purpose their human assets to expand and exploit new and ongoing mining operations, improving wage prospects and security. Bids, both foreign and domestic, are expected to be taken soon.

It is hoped that privatization will help modernize Samsari mining, bringing the industry into the 21st century.

PEACEKEEPING TASK FORCE TO BE DEPLOYED TO NUEVA ARDIA AFTER AIR BATTLE

A Samsari F-20 fighter aircraft has been shot down in international waters over the Krimeon Sea after a CAF patrol was engaged by hostile forces. During the flight, the CAF aircraft were flying outside Nueva Ardian airspace, which can be registered by monitoring data from Samsari coastal stations. Two Nueva Ardian fighters were also shot down during the incident.

"What happened over the Krimeon is just the latest in a series of events which have shown the world the paranoid madness of Tero Melos and his government. The Nueva Ardian government has thrown it's domestic and international credibility away for good, and as neighbors we cannot continue to allow the poor citizens of Nueva Ardia to suffer under this terrorist-sympathizing, international-law-flouting state.

The Samsari Assistance Force will restore peace and offer crucial aid to the poor, beleaguered Nueva Ardians who need it. I can only assure the civilian victims of this horrible conflict that we come in peace and mean no harm".

The President declined any questions.

This is an emergency message. This country has been attacked with Toshikawan ballistic weapons.

Communications have been disrupted, and the number of casualties and the extent of the damage are extensive. We shall bring you further information as soon as possible. Meanwhile, stay tuned, stay calm and stay in your own homes.

It is possible that further ballistic attack with conventional or radiological weaponry is imminent. By leaving your homes you could be exposing yourselves to greater danger. If you leave, you may find yourself without food, without water, without accommodation and without protection. Do not, in any circumstances, go outside your homes. Radioactive fall-out can kill. You cannot see it or feel it, but it is there. If you go outside, you will bring danger to your family and you may die.

Make sure gas and other fuel supplies are turned off and that all fires are extinguished. If mains water is available, this can be used for fire-fighting. You should also refill all your containers for drinking water after the fires have been put out, because water supplies may not be available for very long. Use your water only for essential drinking and cooking purposes.

Make your food stocks last: ration your supply.

This message will repeat in all national languages. The all clear will be broadcast by all possible means. That is the end of this broadcast.

Vice President Kumari at the Emergency Liberal Progressive Party Conference held yesterday.

END OF THE ROAD FOR ADDIS?

President Addis's approval ratings are now lower than at any previous time in his presidency, as the public continue to vent frustration after the recent ballistic missile attack and the proclamation of the deeply unpopular Sakura-Umeko Accords.

The President's approval ratings have fallen by 29% since the attacks, from 47% to just 18%. In contrast, Vice President Kumari's approval ratings have sky-rocketed from 40% to a stellar 65%. Focus groups were more likely to consider her "strong" and "patriotic", while President Addis was perceived as "less capable" of maintaining the safety of the nation.

The figures are damning for the floundering President, who has been damaged by popular perceptions that he has failed to represent Samsari interests powerfully enough, which some have blamed for the lack of representation for the Commonwealth, it's defence against Toshikawa, and it's interests within the Sakura-Umeko accords to which he was not invited. When "do not know" votes were eliminated a staggering 67% of those polled believed Vice President Kumari could have secured an outcome that was "better" for Samsarah and "harsher" on Toshikawa, than President Addis has done. Kumari was also percieved as more likely to prevent another ICBM attack.

Secretary of Commerce and Labour Axar Chinai echoes the statements of Secretary of National Security Mirsa Kalakani and Secretary of Defence Oleg Kononenko today in suggesting that the President was "out of touch", stating "the President is thoroughly out of step with popular opinion, not just on the Sakura-Umeko Accord, but on defence and foreign policy issues. If he is not prepared to defend the Samsari peoples, he should step down, and before he drags down further our party and our nation".

Overall, political commentators continue to suggest that a cabinet coup against the President is imminent, who may be forced into retirement or face impeachment in favour of the Vice President.

President Kumari at her swearing-in as President today.

ADDIS RESIGNS, KUMARI SWORN IN

In light of the his loss of political support and the near-certainty of his impeachment, President Alem Neh Addis resigned the office of the presidency this morning. After Secretary Kalikani, widely regarded as President Kumari's protege, secured what many are considering a diplomatic victory at the Haru Peace Conference.

President Addis stated that he was resigning for the good of the country and asked the nation to support the new president, Aruna Kumari. Addis went on to review the accomplishments of his presidency, citing significant improvements in literacy, infrastructure and his anti-corruption campaigns, but taking responsibility for the development of Samsari involvement in the unpopular Andean conflict.

Immediately after taking the oath of office in the Gold Room of the Presidential Palace, President Kumari spoke to the assembled audience:

President Kumari

I have not sought this enormous responsibility, but I will not shirk it. President Addis was, and remains, a great leader; a true patriot. I pledge to continue the work of my predecessor in improving the living standards and opportunities of all Samsari people. Yet, we must not be blind to the truth. The globe around us has changed, and not for the better.

Indeed, we find ourselves in a modern world filled with venality, in which many nations are working, even now, to crush our hopes and aspirations; to destroy the future we are building for our children. We will answer the depths of their depravity with a fist of righteousness.

In recent weeks, two things have fallen from space to rain death and destruction. One was brought upon the Union of Nordic People, who I stand with at this hour. But the other was brought upon Samsarah, by man. Great harm has been done to us. We have suffered great loss. I will not forget this wound to our country or those who inflicted it. I will not yield; I will not rest; I will not relent in waging this struggle for freedom and security.

Together, we will unite as we emerge from this dark period, working for something greater than individual gain. We will build a greater nation, developing our potential to exploit the intrinsic wealth of our great and diverse homeland. Unemployment, inefficiency and poverty will be the enemy of my administration.

At the same time, we must also embark on a great enterprise to substantially improve our defence capabilities, modernising our army and building a worthy air force and missile defence network to ensure we never again suffer as we have suffered at the hands of our enemies.

I see that great times and great actions are coming, and we Samsari will meet and fulfil each in turn. We will crush our doubters, slay our enemies, and grow ever stronger into tomorrow. I know you are all with me. Thank you.
