![]() LARSTON AND GREENVILLE PREPARE FOR CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ~ Previews of both competing clubs ~ Rosters ---------------------- - 188,270 views - 912 comments ---------------------- by Mark Dunley (@mdunleytal) With the International Champions League just a week away, the two highest placed finishers from last seasons Azrean Premier League are set to compete amongst Mundus' best clubs. Larston and Greenville both played tremendous seasons last year, with the former winning its first ever league title and reaching the Azrean Cup Finals for only the second time in its history. Greenville FC finished runners up for the third time in 4 seasons but managed to win other numerous trophies, including the Super 8 and the league cup. We have the previews of both clubs as well as their full rosters with important statistics from league competition. ![]() Larston Last Season Finish: Champions Points: 90 (28 W, 6 T, 4 L) Goals Scored: 89 Goals Conceded: 31 Top Goal Scorer: Donnie Mason (24 Goals) Most Assits: Andy Matthews (13 Assists) Players to Watch: Jeremiah Medley (D), Andy Matthews (M), Donnie Mason (F) Larston's championship winning season was historical on many accounts. They scored 89 goals, the most times any Larston side have found the back of the net, had the best goal differential in the competition, and had the leagues highest goal scorer. Powered by a well experienced manager and a stingy back line, the Orange Men made sure it was theirs for the taking. A strong start to the season what propelled Larston above their opponents. Through their first 10 games, they were able to win 8 times, draw once, and lose once with big wins against strong teams such as Larmana, Port James, Fairview, and Minford. Through 20, Larston had 44 points (14 W, 4 T, 2 L) which was among one of the best starts for any team through 20 matches played. Another astonishing statistic is how many clean sheets they have had with 17 of their 28 victories occurring without their opponent finding the net. This was made possible with a young goalkeeper and future national team member, in Dylan Kenning. A simple 4-4-2 diamond applied by Franklin Roberts was what led his team to glory. Physical and quick wing backs overlapped the outer midfielders on any playing through the wings strategies. Their crosses, often floated in, would be timed brilliantly allowing for many scoring opportunities. Playing through the middle was Larstons most deadly choice of attack, however. Andy Matthews was the attacking midfielder doing the most danger for his side. His quick feet and smart decision making led him to become one of the leagues best playmakers in the span of one season. Matthews most dangerous playing style would be setting runs for players as well as delivering through balls through the narrowest of opportunities. On the defensive side, the Azrean Premier Leagues best defensive midfielder in Matthew Mayes, applied pressure in front of his center backs while only picking up 2 yellows all season. His strengths; clearing corners, setting up quick counters, as well as one on one marking were used efficiently. Larston will need these key midfielders, their star striker, and a young goalkeeper to consistently play at a world class level for them to have any chance of getting out of the group. The club won yet another Azrean Cup, their 3rd Super 8 Title, as well The League Cup. The Lions were led this past season by consistent goal scorers (goals scored by 19 different players), solid defense, as well as beautiful play making through midfield. 20 year old NT member Victor Vage lived up to his hype by bagging in 20 goals for his club in his first professional season. He was accompanied by Ricardo Blake and Justin Neal in terms of double digit scoring for the Lions. Goals were plenty for a club who only used one striker up top. 93 league goals were scored with a 4-1-3-1-1 formation as a result of the dynamic passing and numerous set piece opportunities that came Greenville's way. While Vage was often alone as a striker up top, attacking mid in Justin Neal was able to find the back of the net at a constant rate himself. Attacking through the wings is the strength of this Greenville side, especially on counter attacking chances. Wingers in Christian Wallace and Michael Smith were able to use their speed and technique to get by defenders on break away opportunities. Lastly, was the center back duo that gathered the least amount of yellow cards the whole season. Jay Goldson and Lewis Clayton were arguably the best center backs in the competition based on how clean their tackles won. They also had large percentages based on aerial duels as well as other key defensive stats. Greenville are facing much more experience and talent in their group. They will need a mostly young side to be smart in tough decisions and keep possession.
