Referendum Day Celebrations

Posted ImageThe Traditional Honor Guard Prepares to March Down the Streets of Hamanatra

Across Ionia celebrations take place to commemorate the 25th anniversary since the historic vote that ended Ionia's status as a Rokkenjiman protectorate, becoming an independent state. The majority of the celebrations will take place in Hamantra, traditional the center of Ionia. While Referendum Day is focused on Ionia gaining it's independence, much of the day is also spent in remembrance of the many years Ionia spent under Ardian rule.

Early today, Premier Khorican Vaju commenced the festivities with by giving a speech from her office in Knightsgrave. The following are the highlights:

Quote:

On this day 25 years ago our nation won a great victory, and while no blood was spilled then, we would do well to remember the countless Ionians that sacrificed themselves so we might enjoy our freedom today. As such today is a bittersweet day, for me just as much as for the rest of the Confederacy. My father, Komus Vaju, lost his life fighting against Ionian independence from Rokkenjima. And why wouldn't he? Under the First Empire we enjoyed all the luxuries and securities granted by the superpower. But in the end, we as a people chose to forge our own path, make our own way in Mundus. And why wouldn't we? We proved ourselves to be strong under the brutal Latin rule. We proved ourselves to be fierce as our soldiers raised our flag over Roma. How could such a great people be content to live under the shadow of Rokkenjima. But it would not do to forget those that have aided us on our journey. As such, I extend my deepest gratitude to the Rokkenjimans for all they have done to help Ionia.

We have come a long way from a vassal state, but we still have more to do. Since the referendum, Ionia has pursed isolation, enjoying peace from our demilitarization and avoiding the instability of Mundus. And while our nation may have blossomed in these spring years, it is time we stopped turning a blind eye to the plight of others. Apathy is not the answer. A meteor destroyed a nation and we did nothing. We watched global warming unleashe its' wrath on the Felysian Islands. Toshikawa committed genocide and we stood by in silence. Across Kyne, in Mercia, religious genocide continues. Just to our west, a fascist regime rises in the Ardian Republic. Spring is over, and the dangers of summer are upon us. As a people of the desert, we all know the evils of the sun, the tyranny of heat. No longer will we sit, growing fat, in the shade. No, we will share our water with those dehydrated before us.

Ionia will seek to join the CTO, re-open our borders, and extend relief efforts and aid to all those in need...

Ardian Troops March Unopposed Into Vienra

Posted ImageRepublician Legionaries Parade Victorious After Liberating the City

Just a few short hours after Consul Tiberia Nelius' announcement, Ardian troops arrived at the outskirts of Vienra. A token defensive force made from volunteers mostly consisting of police officers awaiting the Latin army. After a short stand-off, the volunteers surrendered before any shoots were fired, chanting, "in the name of blessed peace," a famous line of Premier Khorican Vaju. Afterwards, in a matter of minutes, the foreign troops had taken full control of the city. The Legionaries paraded through every major street. The city mayor spoke outside of the city hall, urging civilians to remain calm and follow all instructions of the military. General Lena Caerellius has taken the position of Interim Governor, until the Republic can set up a new government. Caerellius has declared martial law, putting in place a nighttime curfew, and forbidding any form of protest.

Vienra is the second largest city in the Confederacy, and a major center of industry, along with being invaluable to internal trade routes for the nation. Several analysts believe that this could lead to shortages across the country, and raise the prices of basic goods and services. In addition, the Ionian economy could take a major hit in the stock market as foreign investors begin to pull out their investments.

The Premier has responded stating that, "the rest of Mundus will not allow this. Once the proper noise is made in the right channels, Vienra will be rightfully returned. I only hope that till then the people of Vienra remain safe."

Vienra Awakes to Massive Protests

Posted ImageDaska Catoti; One of the Major Protest Organizers

As the sun rose in Vienra this morning, thousands of protestors had already taken over the city. Blocking all major streets into and out of the city, surrounding city hall and the police stations being used as military barracks. The protestors are, of course, angered by the Ardian occupation, calling for a removal of troops in the city. The demonstrators are breaking Interim Governor Lena Caerellius' ban on protests. The Governor has warned that the activists have until nightfall to clear out or face the full consequences of breaking the law. The crowds seemed unfazed, continuing to voice their outrage.

The demonstrations have proceeded with extreme efficiency due to the use of modern technology, especially social media. Despite being spread across the entire city, the crowds have been able to remain in constant communication. As more join in, they are able to quickly bolster the smaller rallies, allowing for each rally to be about the same size. Chants are consistent between each group, and everyone has access to the latests developments and speeches. The lead organizers have also said that if military forces should turn hostile, to post as much information as possible online. They hope that the flood of information will help others stay safe, while also making sure that the rest of Mundus is aware of the latest update.

While so far the protests have remained nonviolent, most across Vienra are doubtful that will last much longer. Many believe that when the sun sets, Ardian troops will begin patrolling the streets, putting an end to the demonstrations in whatever way they can. It is not a question of if the Governor will resort to violence, but rather how brutal he is willing to go.

City Turns Into Warzone

Posted ImageVienra Square After Last Nights Riots

Interim Governor Caerellius proved last night that his warning was more than a mere bluff. Images and videos from hundreds of amateur sources all show one thing; that last night chaos ensued in Vienra. Reports of hundreds injured, a dozen dead, and many more missing, as Ardian Legionaries worked to put down the protestors. A variety of methods were used, from batons and rubber bullets, to pepper spray and tear gas. Some unconfirmed sources claim that the soldiers even used live ammunition, firing indiscriminately into crowds of civilians. In the aftermath of last night, there are many unanswered questions; how far is the provisional government willing to go to restore order? What will be the Ionian government's response? The international communities'?

So far Premier Vaju has submitted a resolution before CTO, but it is unsure when it will reach the CTO floor for debate. The lack of haste in the international response has many fed up, ready for immediate action. Today, rallies are being held in Hamantra calling for Serenity Azurewind, the current CTO Secretary General, to expedite the Vienra Resolution, given the circumstances. Vaju has promised to begin seeking other avenues for solution, and is calling for Caerellius to open the city to Ionian relief efforts, a request which has been ignored.

The Ionian stock market continues to fall, as businesses and investors turn to other nations for more stability. Chief Sectary of the Treasury Darira Paumy is urging citizens to remain calm, stating that this is only temporary, when Vienra is returned, the economy, too, will return to normal.

Protesters Raid Military Stockpile; Insurgency Begins In Earnest

Posted ImageVienran Rebels Reorganizing After Ardian Counterattack

Despite the international community now closely watching the situation is Vienra, and many coming forward to condemn Nova Ardia, the Legionaires still maintain a tight grip on the city. Former protestors, unwilling to wait for the results of the aggressive diplomacy, have taken matters into their own hands. Early this morning, hundreds stormed a military stockpile, breaking through the Ardian defenses and raiding the guns and ammunition. The Vienrans did not waste time making full use of their new equipment, taking the fight to the occupation forces. Across the city, streets have been empty as several attacks and counter attacks have made leaving one's own house extremely dangerous.

Premier Vaju, upon hearing the news, called a closed door meeting between her closest political allies and advisors to discuss the next course of action. This meeting has gone on for over 8 hours, the doors only briefly opened for food and a quick restroom break. Speculators are doubtful that the meeting will come to an end anytime soon, as the Premier has some tough choices ahead of her.

Ardians Seeks Ceasefire, Rebels Respond With Bombing

Posted ImageHundreds Dead, Many More Injured

Interim Governor Caerellius issued a call for a ceasefire of fighting the Vienra early this morning. He also invited the leaders of the rebels to set down with him tomorrow to discuss an end to the hostilities. A few hours later, the Governor was visiting a makeshift hospital for civilians caught in the middle of the fighting. Caerellius was reportedly disgusted by the conditions and trying to comfort the wounded, when a bomb went off inside the hospital, killing hundreds of those inside. Caerellius was uninjured, saved by his bodyguard quickly shielding him from the blast. The rebels apologized to the families of those killed, but stated that such actions are necessary to end the Ardian occupation. Caerellius is calling for nations to condemn these actions as blatant terrorism.

Premier Election Nears and With It Major Changes

Posted ImageSince Vaju's Death Three New Political Coalitions Vile For Power

Ionia prepares for what could be the most important election in the history of the Confederacy. Khorican Vaju's assassination means that whoever wins will be the second person to stand as the nation's Premier. Her death has also meant the complete re-invention of the political system. Three new parties have put forth numerous candidates for Senate seats. While the office of the Premier will be a great symbolic victory for one of the parties, given the major differences in the parties' platforms, not having the adequate number of Senators to support them could lead to massive gridlock, and in this time of change, no one wants that.

The Political Parties are the following:

Ionia Political Parties
The Children of Ionia Posted Image The Children of Ionia take their name from the first native political organization created when the nation existed under Rokkenjima rule. Fearing the ISA now on their doorstep, the Children wish to turn back time and seek support from CTO, Rokkenjima, and Achkaerin. Many of the Children's critics claim they wish to surrender the nation's sovereignty.

Ionian National Defense Front

Posted Image
The self called Alt-Right movement is led by the Defense Front. Like the Children, they are a response to the ISA, but rather than seeking international support, the Alt-Right wishes to make Ionia "Great Again." They are extremely pro native Ionians, calling for the removal of the mostly catholic Ardian refugees from the Terranova-Ardia War. They have also renewed the call for Ionians to protect themselves and for the CTO to leave their DMZ.
Nir'Shado Posted Image Perhaps the most surprising of the new parties, the more moderate elements of the Nir'Shado have decided to take control of their nation through legal means. Despite this, their Premier candidate is still the radical Helhaast. The Nir'Shado wish to enforce religious law across the nation, creating a second Dominion to Crissaar. Although political outsiders, they are extremely popular across several distinct voting groups.

Nir'Shado Make Historic Sweep of the Elections

Posted ImageHelhaast Makes His First Public Appearance Since Being Declared a Terrorist By CTO

In a landslide victory, the Nir'Shado now solidly control the Ionia Senate, winning 176 of the 250 Senate seats. Tomorrow the new Senate will meet for the first time and there is little doubt the Nir'Shado majority will put forth numerous new amendments and constitutional reforms. Premier-elect Helhaast will not fill the vacant office until next week, but given is influence over the Nir'Shado party, much of the legislation will be his own will. By controlling over two-thirds of the Senate, the Premier's party will be able to push through any law they want without fear of repercussion. Many are hailing this as the end of the Ionia Confederacy and the beginning of the Ionia Theocracy.

The infamous Vir of Virs made his first public appearance since his clash with CTO. His intentions for his rivals were made claim in these statement.

Quote:

CTO thought their intervention was for the good of the Ionia people. Well by this election the people have spoken. CTO's help is not wanted or appreciated. Either CTO forces withdraw peacefully, surrendering their DMZ, or they will be forced out. I am willing to forgive our previous quarrels, but it's up to them to ensure we do not start off on the wrong foot.

Ionia-Quintax Relationships Take A New Step Forward

Posted ImageAs part of the Sphere Agreement, Ionia Hands Over Control of Altir Temple

Yesterday, the Ionia Senate passed Yilash Amendment while simultaneously the Dominion passed the Ionia Security Treaty. Collectively they are being called the Sphere Agreement and are created to ensure the revitalization of Ionia-Quintax relationship to their hight during the pre-WW1 era. As part of the deal, the Dominion is given control of a military base within Ionia heartlands, the governments decided on the Altir Temple, which has been abandoned for centuries. Already the Dominion is organizing an elite cadre of Watchmen to be stationed in Ionia. The agreement is as follows:

Quote:

I.-That the government of Ionia shall never enter into any treaty or other compact with any foreign power or powers which will impair or tend to impair the independence of Ionia, nor in any manner authorize or permit any foreign power or powers to obtain by colonization or for military or naval purposes or otherwise, lodgement in or control over any portion of said nation.
II. That said government shall not assume or contract any public debt, to pay the interest upon which, and to make reasonable sinking fund provision for the ultimate discharge of which, the ordinary revenues of the nation, after defraying the current expenses of government shall be inadequate.
III. That the government of Ionia consents that the Dominion of Crissaar may exercise the right to intervene for the preservation of Ionian independence, the maintenance of a government adequate for the protection of life, property, and individual liberty.
IV. That to enable the Dominion of Crissaar to maintain the independence of Ionia, and to protect the people thereof, as well as for its own defense, the government of Ionia will sell or lease to the Dominion of Crissaar lands necessary for maintaining order at certain specified points to be agreed upon with the God-Emperor of the Dominion of Crissaar.
V. That by way of further assurance the government of Ionia will embody the foregoing provisions in a permanent treaty with the Dominion of Crissaar

With the passage of this constitutional amendment, Premier Helhaast's "hundred days of reform" continues unimpeded. Next on the Premier's agenda was to find a solution to the Ardian refugee crisis, but growing concern over the Jakobson’s Virus in the neighboring Divine Hegemony has pushed this back.
