 Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation G-3R Pandemic Spreads The disease known as G-3R has spread from its initial foothold in the city of Port Ulterre to the outlying suburbs of that city, and three nearby towns. The number of infected has risen to over 630,000, while the number of dead has risen to over 12,600. It has been estimated that the disease has a mortality rate of around 2%. In an effort to stop the spread of this disease the government has instituted the strictest measures of the Quarantine Law of 1993. They are as follows: 1. A 30 mile quarantine zone shall be established around the affected area. 2. Entry and entry and exit from this zone is prohibited, and shall be enforced by the Elpidian Army, which has been authorized to use deadly force. 3. Within the Quarantine zone there shall be established several safe zones for non-infected individuals to reside in. These will be in areas that are already mostly unaffected. 4. Disaster relief and medical treatment will be provided and organized under the Elpidian Red Cross and the National Emergency Response Administration (NERA). Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Favorable Preliminary Results of Quarantine For 48 hours not a single case of G-3R has been reported out of the quarantine zone. Government officials are urging caution, warning that the pandemic may not have been stopped, and continues to urge anti-infection practices. Nevertheless, we are tentatively optimistic that the drastic measures taken by the government may have spared the rest of the country. Sadly inside the quarantine zone the infection and death rates continue to climb. Some experience with treating the symptoms of G-3R has somewhat reduced mortality rates, doctors are more capable of fighting the symptoms. However death rates among children, the elderly, and those with immune deficiencies remain high. We hope for a vaccine or cure soon. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Quarantine Suffers Minor Breach Today a citizen infected with the G-3R virus was diagnosed as such at the Yves Branch Hospital in the small town of Oldenville, three miles outside the quarantine zone. The quarantine zone was immediately extended to envelope the town, but precautions are being made to keep Oldenville separate from the rest of the quarantined area, in hopes that its isolation will prevent the further spread of disease in the town. In other news the QZ seems to be holding in all other areas, though the death toll has risen to over 17,000. This is officially the worst disaster in terms of human life in the modern history of Elpidia. Riots in Port Ulterre Unfortunately today around 20 people were killed by riot police when a protest in the quarantined city of Port Ulterre turned violent. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Government Responds to Situation in Rokkenjima  Naval Taskforce En Route to the Great Northern Sea In response to the Grand Republican Army terrorist attacks in the Rokkenjiman province of Arovium the President's Office released an official communique earlier today pledging Elpidia's support. Furthermore the President placed the GRA on the official list of international terrorist organizations. The armed forces have been placed on alert, the navy especially has been mobilized to assist the First Empire taskforce in the Great Northern Sea. Military Spending Raised The government's announcement regarding the Rokkenjiman situation was followed quickly by another statement that the President would be introducing a bill soon to the Parliament seeking to raise military spending from 1% of the GDP to 2.5%. She cited blockade of the Great Northern Sea, tension with the Warsaw Pact, Incen Warize and the Grand Republican Army as evidence of increasingly turbulent times. The President released the following statement regarding the bill. "I believe that a strong military is a necessity for the maintenance of our independence and sovereignty in the increasingly hostile environment that Elipida finds itself in. To be clear this is only a precautionary and defensive measure." |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Plague Peaks in Port Ulterre The people of Elpidia can finally breathe a sigh of relief, as the plague appears to have peaked in the Port Ulterre quarantine zone. For the past two weeks the infection and death rates have been dramatically decreasing, and there have been no breaches of the quarantine. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Foreign Ministry Finalizes Rokkenjiman Deal Today the Foreign Ministry formally announced a deal that has been in the works with the First Empire of Neo Rokkenjima for some time. The deal covers a range of subjects that will closely ally Elpidia and the Empire. The first part of the deal will work to establish relations between Elpidians of Rokkenjiman descent and their ancestral homeland, with dual citizenship a possibility in the future. In the mean time construction of a Rokkenjiman cultural center in Elpidiana. The President of the Rokkenjiman-Elpidian Cultural Society had this to say; "We are certainly looking forward to reestablishing relations with our homeland, especially the older among us who were born there. However, most of us identify primarily as Elpidians, I'm not sure dual citizenship will be popular." Secondly the deal established a mutual defense alliance between the two nations. Thirdly the First Empire has been given permission to establish a military base on an island in the Illumic Channel, which the Rokkenjiman News has stated "it is expected that the First Empire will propose this base be capable of hosting naval, air and ground forces." The move is popular, as the might of the Rokkenjiman Imperial Navy is well known. Finally, the deal included the purchase of several older Rokkenjiman Navy vessels, as well as over a dozen contracts to construct new vessels for the Imperial Navy. This is estimated to create over 7,000 jobs. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Quarantine Ends, Nation Mourns  Mourners in Port Ulterre As the quarantine officially ends around the city of Port Ulterre and the surrounding country, the nation can begin to mourn the thousands who have died of G-3R. Today the President attended the official memorial ceremony, which also functioned as the funeral of over three hundred unclaimed dead, who were mostly homeless or family-less individuals. In her speech the President said: "This epidemic has claimed more lives than any other peacetime event in Elpidian history. We mourn the dead, and sympathize with the families who have lost loved ones. However, the terrorists who committed this act shall be brought to justice. They hoped to instill fear in our hearts, to control us through terror. But they have not shaken our resolve, we will not be shaken, not now, not ever." The President's glowing words were greeted with as much clapping as this solemn affair permitted, but the President's visit was not without controversy. The quarantine in Port Ulterre was met with consistent riots, which the police struggled to maintain. Over 1,000 citizens were killed in the struggles. The government has been accused of heavy handed tactics and abuses of human rights in the quarantine zone. Mr. James Moorstone, former mayor of Port Ulterre, was one of the most outspoken critics. "The President and her cronies in Elpidiana left us here in the quarantine zone to rot. Meanwhile using every means at her disposal to maintain "control" over us. The real death toll from police brutality is at least 1,800. Besides this, numerous people were arrested for suspected riot activity, and habeas corpus has been abused for months. The people of Elpidia will be shown what the government has done here, we will not be silent. The President will be brought to justice." The President could not be reached for comment, but the EBC will continue to investigate the claims made by Mr. Moorstone. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Government Caught in Quarantine Scandal  Protesters in Elpidiana Earlier today hundreds of documents were released on the website Indyleaks from the Ministries of Health and Justice. The documents have revealed that the number of those killed by government forces in the quarantine zone was actually around 1,800, rather than the 1,000 reported by the government. Furthermore, the documents leaked from the Ministry of Justice reveal that upwards of 5,000 persons have been held without warrant by the government during the quarantine period. These persons were filed under "suspected rioters", and more were filed under no suspected offense. A few hours after the leak, spontaneous street protests began in many major cities, including Elpidiana, Port Ulterre, Calza, and Suresa. While most of these protests are unorganized and leaderless, the protestors in Port Ulterre are organized under the organization, the Constitution Party. The Constitution Party has been formed by James Moorstone former mayor of Port Ulterre. They call for the formation of a constitutional convention for Elpidia, to revise the Basic Laws into one document, and to reform the government to prevent further abuses in the future. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Protests Continue & Grow Protesters in front of the National Assembly Today the anti-government protests grew, though they've remained peaceful so far. The protesters in the Letelier Square in Elpidiana grew to over 90,000. Protests have sprung up in dozens of cities. So far about 60% of the protests, including those in Elpidiana, have aligned themselves with Moorstone's Constitution Party. The President has finally released an official response to the protesters.
Several labor unions have announced plans for a general strike beginning tomorrow in Elpidia's three largest cities, Elpidiana, Port Ulterre, and Calza. If the strike goes through as planned it is estimated that around 50% of the total workforce of the three cities will be on strike, including the vital sectors of public transportation and sanitation. Moorstone, now the de facto leader of the protests, had this to say.

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Opposition Sides with Protestors As of yesterday the protest groups in all cities have aligned themselves with Moorstone's Constitution Party, and today the opposition coalition, the Front for Elpidia, officially sided with the ongoing protests against the Quilo government. In a joint statement by the chief of the major National Republican Party, the coalition had this to say. "The Front for Elpidia officially supports and endorses the protests by the Constitution Party. We feel that the current system of government in obviously broken, and a constitutional convention will allow us to revise our system to better meet the needs of the people. While we as the opposition obviously oppose the President's coalition, we have held back an official endorsement until now for two reasons. We wanted to make sure these protests would remain nonviolent, and that they would be united by the Constitution Party. Now that both of these conditions have been met, we are prepared to do what we can to help the protestors. We are giving President Quilo and her government two weeks to resign before we attempt an impeachment." Monarchist Party Founded  Symbol of the new party, the old "Steel Crown" of the Elpidian Kingdom In anticipation of a possible constitutional convention, a new party has been founded in Elpidiana. The party was founded by Richard Blake, an Elpidian citizen of Rokkenjiman descent. The party has attracted a small following, especially in the capital. Blake, now President of the party, released this statement. "Our party will be promoting the establishment of a constitutional monarch for Elpidia. We believe that such a monarchy will serve as an important symbol for the nation, and a safeguard of liberty. However, we understand that this may not be popular, and if we are represented at any constitutional convention we will at least push for a separate head of state, perhaps a revival of the office of Lord Protector." Royal Wedding Announced Empress Beatrice of Rokkenjima and Prince Alexander of Dartfordia have announced their engagement. In accordance with Rokkenjiman tradition, the Empress proposed to the Prince. (OOC Note: The following takes place chronologically after the Covenant of Nations Signing Ceremony) Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation BREAKING NEWS: Backbench Rebellion Ousts Quilo We've just received confirmation that the National Assembly has approved a motion of no confidence in President Quilo and her government. Seeing as Quilo's own People's Alliance coalition held a majority of seats, at least some of them must have voted for the motion for it to carry. Former Foreign Minister Edward Truden has been elected President by the National Assembly, so new elections will not need to be called. President Truden had this to say in a speech to the protestors in Letelier Square in Elpidiana.
President Truden's speech was met with thunderous applause from the protestors. James Moorstone, de facto leader of the protests, congratulated Truden on his speech and the government as a whole on the motion of no confidence. His Constitution Party has agreed to end the protests after the convention is called. We've had no contact with President Quilo, or Vice-President Vargas. Both were seen exiting the Presidential Palace earlier today. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation National Assembly Calls Convention National Assembly in session today As promised by President Truden, the National Assembly passed a bill calling for a constitutional convention. In a rare show of unity, 284 of the 300 Assembly members voted in favor of the bill. Most of the remaining sixteen votes were abstentions, or non-present Assembly Members, notably the former President and members of her government. The bill outlines the procedure for the composition of the constitutional convention. The three hundred electoral districts will be organized into groups of three, each electing one member to the convention. The elections will be non-partisan. Additionally there will be 11 seats set aside for appointment by the government, to give minority groups representation on the convention. The government has not announced who will receive the seats, but it's possible such groups as the Rokkenjiman-Elpidians, LGBT community, and the Muslim community could be represented. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation National Team Bests Vicarians in IFFA World Cup The Elpidian National Football team has bested the term from the Vicarious Empire in the first round of matches. The score was 2-0. Head coach Aaron Kolbein but the victory down to team unity. "What really caused the team's victory today was brotherhood. I was a bit worried, as this team was formed from the best players from across Elpidia, many from teams with long rivalries, that infighting would be a problem. But that hasn't been the case, there was an immediate bond of friendship, and a desire to represent Elpidia well. We can only look forward to more victories." The main squares stand empty, and mostly cleaned of rubbish after the nightly clean-up. The nation holds it's breath to see what the convention will create. National Team Continues Victories Shot of the game against Albanor In the second round of matches the national team has won a smashing victory against Albanor, with a score of 5-1. The team has now risen one position to first in international rankings. In the third round of matches the team will have a bye. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Rokkenjima Offers Aid The First Empire of Rokkenjima has announced that £¥55b will be set aside in this year's budget for international military and financial assistance. Of course, this aid will be prioritized to CSTO nations. According to the Rokkenjiman press this is an attempt to increase the First Empire's "soft power" presence across the globe. The Empress's government has also announced that the deal reached between Elpidia and New Rokkenjiman regarding the sale of naval vessels, a Rokkenjiman base in Elpidian territory, and ship production contracts will be reinstated. The deal was taken off the table by the Rokkenjimans following the protests, however the move was unpopular with both Quilo supporters and anti-government protestors. The return of the deal has pleased many people, but it's quick withdraw over what most see as domestic issues has shaken public confidence in Rokkenjiman. Prior to the protests, the Empress and Rokkenjima had a 78% approval rating, which has fallen to around 59%. Keeping this in mind, President Truden has been careful regarding the aid, saying that "it will need to be considered after the constitution is complete." Vicarious Falls Helicopters Arrive in Vicarious The spontaneous and complete collapse of the Vicarian state has caught the world by surprise. It appears the state has fallen into complete anarchy, with fighting in the streets of the major cities, and mass emigration of citizens by any means available. This is the first major international incident for President Truden, and he's responded with a great deal of assistance. The Elpidian Air Force is operating helicopters and cargo planes to evacuate people from Vicarious to refugee camps in Elpidia, and civilian helicopters and planes have been commandeered for the purpose. In the mean time aid in the form of food and clean water is being funneled into Vicarious. |

The team will play Kiylo in the next match. First Elpidian in Space Elpidian astronaut Benjamin Jones is set to be the first Elpidian in space. He will be traveling with two other astronauts aboard the Rokkenjiman Soluna VIII mission to the moon. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Constitutional Convention Ends Today the Constitutional Convention officially adjourned, sending a series of changes to the Basic Laws to the people for a referendum, which will occur two days from now. The changes are a large departure. Some of the main changes, and the reasons for their inclusion are: 1. Lord Protector: The office of Lord Protector was reinstated as head of state because many of the nations in our region are monarchies, and there is growing support for that institution in Elpidia. The title of Lord Protector is the closest republican title to a monarch. 2. Federalism: The institution of federalism is to provide greater liberty by allowing regional interests to be heard, and further decentralizing power. 3. Bicameralism: The institution of a second house is meant to provide more reflection on legislation, and allow provincial interests to have a say. The team has now slipped to second place, it has been in first place since the second round of matches. It is hoped the next match against United Themata will propel the team to the first place again. The team captain had this to say: "Obviously we are disappointed at the loss, but I can't fault our team. We played to the best of our ability, and this was simply a case of bad luck, and the fact that the Quinntopians have an excellent team. We will continue to do our best in next week's match against United Themata, may the best team win." |

The constitution will take effect immediately, with President Truden transitioning to the office of Lord Protector. The National Assembly will be dissolved and elections held for the new Federal Assembly in the coming week. The new provincial governments outlined in the constitution will take longer to set up, prospectively provincial elections will follow a few weeks after the new Federal Assembly is in office. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation First Federal Assembly Assumes Office The halls of the newly christened Federal Assembly building were bustling with activity as the new Assembly members assumed office today. The elections concluded two days ago. 70% of the Assembly members are reelected members of the former National Assembly. However, there have been some interesting, and unexpected changes. The People's Alliance has lost some seats, retaining it's majority in the lower house, but only slightly. The Front for Elpidia has made a few gains, but the major upset has been the survival of the Constitution Party, which took a startling 1/5 of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies. It was expected that having achieved its goal of a constitutional convention the Constitution Party would disband. However, the party leadership has successfully turned the movement into a coherent political party, focusing on the concerns of the common man and provincial rights. Another upset was the lack of a majority in the Senate. The composition of the two houses is as follows: Chamber of Deputies: People's Alliance- 153 seats Front for Elpidia- 86 Constitution Party- 61 seats Senate: PA- 38 FE- 35 Con- 26 The favor of the Constitution Party will be essential for the People's Alliance, especially in matters of Senate importance such as foreign affairs, court appointments, and military affairs. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Government Complex Bombed  Republican Guard securing Lord Protector - Elpidiana twenty minutes after bombing The Government Complex in Elpidiana was the target of a bombing today during the Regicide Parade. The parade was meant to serve as a celebration both of Regicide Day and the new constitution, but was marred by an apparent attempt on the life of the Lord Protector, who was scheduled to give a speech in front of the Government Complex a few minutes after the bomb went off. Early reports from authorities indicate that the bomb exploded prematurely. There are currently no indications of who is responsible for this act of terrorism. The death toll is currently at five with 3 injured but in good condition. The building had yet to open, or the death toll could've been much higher. Nevertheless, our thoughts are with the families of the deceased and injured. |

This is further strengthened by the fact that the Thematans were also responsible for the attempted assassination of the Empress Beatrice. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Bomb Explodes in Aydewoode  After explosion Today a bomb exploded on a bus in the city of Barendel, provincial capital of Aydewoode. Twelve people were killed, and another twenty-six injured, several very severely. One of the dead is Senator Jane Rowan. It was unknown what caused the explosion until a suspicious package delivered to the Port Ulterre Cathedral today was revealed to be a mail bomb. It is not suspected that the bus explosion was caused by a similar mail bomb, most likely to opened by the Senator who was likely the intended target. Many people throughout Elpidia are now concerned that there may be more such mail bombs, and the police are asking that any suspicious packages not be handled and that they be contacted immediately. |

The Elpidian team unfortunately sank to 3rd in the ratings on the last Matchday, and failed to qualify for the Quarter-finals. Bomb Threat Continues Two more mail bombs were discovered and diffused today, one sent to the Governor of Beechwyn Province, the other to the headquarters of the Elpidian National Congress party. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Police Arrest Suspected Bomber  Suspected Bomber Hikari Mitsu Following up on a tip from the KaiserAdolfian government and confirming with information from the controversial CSTO 'Full Spectrum' program, the National Police have made an arrest in the ongoing bombing case. Additionally, three more bombs were found and diffused without injury. The arrested person is Hikari Mitsu, who is allegedly a Rokkenjiman national. Her laundry list of charges include murder, terrorism, conspiracy, and espionage. The Minister for National Security released the following statement.

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation BREAKING NEWS: Air Strike on KaiserAdolf Lord Protector delivering his address from outside the Coexistence Conference Just moments ago the Lord Protector finished giving an address to the world, outside the Coexistence Conference. The address revealed that an air strike was carried out as part of a preemptive strike against the KaiserAdolfians, who were preparing for a surprise invasion of Aydewoode Province. Naturally this has caused a great deal of concern throughout the nation, but the government is continuing to say the situation is under control. They repeat that only those citizens in the immediate vicinity of Aydewoode are in any danger, and that these citizens should evacuate the area as soon as possible. It is unclear if the KaiserAdolfians will respond to the Lord Protector's offer of armistice, but the nation is certainly hopeful that an accord will be reached. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Rokkenjiman Ship Construction Ends  Spirit of Elpidia leaving ceremony Today the PM Claude Cavour and Rokkenjiman Ambassador Jason Cole participated in a christening ceremony for the last two Rokkenjiman ships being built in Elpidia. The last of the Resolute classes was named Spirit of Elpidia, while the last of the Steadfast classes was named Pride of Lydcaer. The PM's wife did the honors of smashing a champagne bottle on each of the vessels, while musical detachments from both navies accompanied with patriotic songs. The eight ships bought from Rokkenjima at the beginning of this deal have served with distinction in the Elpidian Navy, and today the Lord Protector announced that one of them, formerly the Porcelina class destroyer Janus, will be renamed Empress in honor of Her Imperial Majesty Empress Beatrice I. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Gay Rights Groups' Demonstration Over Chernobereg Law Protesters in front of Chernobereg Embassy Following the passage of the "Sex Act", by the Chernoberegian government, gay rights groups held a demonstration in front of the Chernoberegian embassy in Elpidiana. The law defines marriage as between a man and a woman, and allows only civil partnerships for homosexual couples. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Elpidia since 2005, and the leader of Marriage Equality International had this to say at the rally. "We understand that Chernobereg's new law is certainly more progressive than laws in some states, and we're glad that gay people in Chernobereg can at least receive civil partnerships. However, we will rest for nothing less than full marriage equality in all states. It is not Chernobereg in particular we protest, but all nations in the Independent Order that prohibit same-sex marriage and deny any other equal rights to LGBT people." Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Rokkenjima Declares War, Federal Assembly Follows Suit  Joint Session of the Federal Assembly Following the declaration of war on the United Thematan Republic earlier today the Lord Protector called a joint session of the Federal Assembly to ask for a declaration of war, in support of the country's ally. The government proposal was passed by a large majority.
Following this declaration, a similar one was adopted against the Sultanate of KaiserAdolf to make official the existing state of war, furthermore, a state of martial law was approved for Aydewoode Province, and a state of emergency for the whole country.

The Lord Protector has authorized an Expeditionary Force of 12,000, drawn mostly from regiments in central Elpidia. However, due to ongoing threats at home, reserves have been mobilized to replace these soldiers. The announcement of the deployment was met with criticism and protest. Peace groups, varying from religious to secular organizations, protest the number of conflicts Elpidia has engaged in recently. They say that CSTO has drawn Elpidia near or into far to many conflicts, and that Elpidian soldiers shouldn't be dying except to protect Elpidia itself. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Eliot Quin Remembered The founder and leader of the Liberal Communist Party of Themata has died in an attack on government forces in Starry Harbor. Mr. Quin was one of the foremost leaders of the Thematan Revolution, and a hero to his people. We expect that his memory will be honored in Themata, and among all free peoples for years to come. Rokkenjiman Princess Found A Rokkenjiman princess, Euphemia, has been confirmed as a sister of the Imperial Princess Eva. The young woman was born and raised in Elpidia by the Strasberg family of Elpidiana. She was secreted away to Elpidia during the era of the Federal Republic in Rokkenjima, for her safety. Her Elpidian parents were not informed of her true identity. Apparently record of her was lost, and only by chance has she been discovered. During the Imperial wedding celebrations at the Rokkenjiman Cultural Center in Elpidiana she says she had the sudden revelation. The Strasbergs have commented saying they are honored to have protected and raised Euphemia all these years, however unknowingly of her true identity, and still regard her as their beloved child. Euphemia will be going to Rokkenjima soon, to live with her blood family, however we can expect she will remain an important tie between Elpidia and the Rokkenjiman Imperial Family. The memorial will be in the shape of a monumental lion, carved of red sandstone. The monument be built in Jalata, Aydewoode, and will face northeast, towards KaiserAdolf. "This monument will both commemorate the loss of those courageous Elpidians, and celebrate their defiant bravery in the face of attack. I believe it is something all Elpidians can connect with. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Opposition Slams Government Over Thematan War Question Period erupted into shouting and accusations today, as the issue of the Thematan War became the center of debate. The issue of Elpidian involvement, and the future of the conflict was brought up by Constitution Party leader James Moorstone. Moorstone criticized the government for recklessly endangering Elpidian security by sending troops abroad with threats at home, and for involving Elpidia in a war that "never should've happened." The Constitution Party has been vocal in it's opposition to military engagement, favoring economic sanctions and diplomacy to invasion. The government struggled to respond under the withering assault, talking about it's CSTO obligations, and the need to prevent human rights abuses in Themata. The Thematan Question, as it's now called, has shown fault lines in both major coalitions. In the government (People's Alliance Coalition), the Elpidian National Congress has shown strong support for CSTO and increased intervention abroad. While there have been rumblings from coalition members like the Green Party and Worker's League, both parties known for their opposition to armed conflicts. Meanwhile, in the opposition (Front for Elpidia Coalition), the National Republican Party seems to have a lukewarm support for the war, they are usually in favor of a strong military and international presence. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Chaos in the Federal Assembly! The Chamber of Deputies is in absolute shambles, as the government has lost a majority. The issue began with a motion by the government to pre-approve a move by the Rokkenjiman Empress to invite Alerralith into the Joint-Protectorate Sphere of the CSTO. It seemed that People's Alliance coalition, with it's controlling number of seats, would be able to pass the bill easily. The Constitution Party has been actively opposed to increased Elpidian involvement in international conflicts, and voted against the motion. However, in a surprise move the delegates from the Liberal-Progressive and Green Parties voted with the Constitution Party against their own coalition. Additionally, the Center Alliance of the opposition Front for Elpidia declared their support for the Constitution Party as well. The four parties control 125 delegates, 26 short of a majority. The Elpidian National Congress and National Republican Party, in a rare show of bi-partisanship, voted together to adjourn the Chamber of Deputies for the day. It is unclear what will happen when the chamber reopens tomorrow, although if the new 'Elpidian Center' Coalition holds together, a vote of no confidence can be expected. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Vote of No Confidence Chamber of Deputies in Session A vote of no confidence was passed against the government today, by the new Elpidian Center coalition. Yesterday the coalition had only 125 members, but has gained 26 members who crossed the floor from the Elpidian National Congress and National Republican parties. The coalition now has 151 members, a slim (perhaps shaky) majority. The Prime Minister and Cabinet officially resigned an hour after the motion passed, and the Lord Protector must now appoint a new PM. This will be a test of the appointment process, seeing as LP Truden is a member of the ENC. The obvious choice is James Moorstone, leader of the Constitution Party, although he has been known to be a vocal opponent of the Lord Protector. There seem to be three options. The Lord Protector could appoint Moorstone, confirming the idea of parliamentary supremacy when choosing a PM. Alternatively he could try to appoint someone of his choosing, and risk a dissolution of the Federal Assembly if his candidates are rejected three times. Or he could try to forge a middle path, negotiating a PM he likes from the Elpidian Center. |

Yesterday afternoon, after a day of confusion, the leader of the Constitution Party, and the new Elpidian Center Coalition, James Moorstone, was nominated by the Lord Protector for the position of Prime Minister. By a vote of 191-109, the ECC being supported by some members of the Front for Elpidia, the appointment was approved. The Prime Minister announced his cabinet a few hours later. The breakdown by party is: 11 Constitution, 5 Center Alliance, 3 Liberal Progressive, 3 Green. Some important positions include Stephen Morelle (Green) as Environment Minister, Maria Newell (Lib-Pro) as Treasury Minister, and Alfred Cann (CA) as Foreign Minister. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation PM Outlines Government Plans In his first appearance in Parliament as Prime Minister, James Moorstone delivered a speech outlining the new Elpidian Center government's priorities and agenda. An excerpt of the PM's speech is provided below. "Mr. Speaker, honorable deputies. It is my honor to address you as Prime Minister of Elpidia. It's my intention today to outline for you and the people, what the intentions of this government are. The Elpidian Center is an idea, a belief that we needn't choose between the right and left. A belief that we can simply do what is right for Elpidia in a clear, responsible way that accommodates a wide range of views. In foreign policy we reject both the isolationist policies of the NRP and the interventionist parties of the ENC. We feel that Elpidia has a core set of important alliances. These alliances include our traditional CSTO allies of Rokkenjima, Quinntopia, Dartfordia, and Kazarovia. We feel that these alliances are beneficial to Elpidia, both for our security and our economy. However, the multitude of diplomatic entanglements the previous government got us into will have to be reversed. We can and should involve ourselves when our interests, and those of our allies, are at stake. But it is not Elpidia's purpose, or CSTO's, to be the world's policeman. In our domestic policy we reject the overly controlling policies of our predecessors, and the laissez-faire policies of NRP. We believe that core industries, upon which we all rely, should retain a level of government involvement, but that other areas should be left for free enterprise. To that end, we intent to reduce government shares of all publicly owned companies, like AirElpidia and ElpEng, to 51%. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Government Unveils Universal National Service Plan Habitat for Humanity volunteers The government has unveiled a new Universal National Service Plan for Elpidia. This plan is expected to pass Parliament later this week. It will require all able-bodied Elpidians to do two years of volunteer work between the ages of 18 and 26. The work can be with either the Elpidian Armed Forces, or any of over 150 charitable organizations. The government is also creating a special "Citizen-Soldier" program especially for the UNS, which will only be a two year military program, rather than the longer commitment of traditional military service. These organizations cover a wide variety of causes, including the Elpidian Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and Teach Elpidia. During their service young people will receive a subsistence pay from the government, unless they join the military in which they will receive full pay. Despite the high price tag of this endeavor, the government maintains that it will generate more money in the long run than it costs. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Albanoran President Accuses CSTO, Starts Riots Albanoran Riot Police The Albanorans, and their President, continue to surprise and confuse. The President, broadcasting from Pyrena Castle in Rokkenjima, made a harsh speech condemning CSTO for "murderous tendencies", calling them "the greatest threat to peace." The President went on to accuse CSTO, especially Quinntopia and Rokkenjima, of being warmongers. The President them seemed to take a sharp left turn and said "We are Albanorans. Our forefathers fought... so that Albanor might have the freedom to choose the men that lead them. We have followed the teachings of Catholicism since the birth of our nation." We are still unsure what the President was trying to accomplish, in the context of a speech that was ostensibly about CSTO. The President's speech was extremely animated, and appears to have caused mass riots in Albanor. These riots were apparently anti-CSTO, and included the burning of effigies and CSTO flags. However, they also apparently included looting and fighting, and the Albanoran riot police are struggling to contain them. It is unclear if Albanor has laws that punish speech that encourages violence, but perhaps the President may soon be on the other end of a lawsuit. The Lord Protector, when asked to comment, had this to say, "I don't feel the need to respond to the vast majority of ridiculous claims made by the Albanoran President, observation and history will be enough to show that they are either outright false or drastic twisting of facts. This kind of propaganda need not be taken seriously." |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Thematan War Ends Military Parade in Elpidiana Following similar declarations from the Quinntopians and Rokkenjimans, the Lord Protector has declared an official end to the conflict in Themata. The vast majority of Elpidian troops will be returning soon, although a small detachment of CSTO forces may remain, although that is still being negotiated with the Thematan officials. The Lord Protector also said that Elpidia is committed, alongside the CSTO forces, to assist Themata to rebuild and stabilize. The end of the war was celebrated with a large military parade in Elpidiana, with the Lord Protector, Prime Minister, and many Cabinet members present. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Parties Announce Merger The Constitution, Liberal-Progressives, and Center Alliance Parties have announced an official merger, noting their strong similarities. The merger of the three is called the Democratic Alliance. All three parties are part of the government, and now account for 131 delegates alone. This now means that the governing coalition is only between the Democratic Alliance and the Greens. New Elections Soon New Elections are scheduled to be held by at least six months from now. Already the parties are in full swing, campaigning across the nation. Lord Protector Edward Truden has announced that he will be seeking reelection, still on the People's Alliance ticket. Despite that coalition's failure in Parliament, the LP has a 76% approval rating, and is expected to win easily. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Language Minorities Protest Protestors in Jalata Simultaneous protests by language minority groups in Aydewoode and Beechwyn provinces were held today, and are expected to carry on for several days. The protests were mainly in the provincial capitals of Jalata and Port Ulterre, though other large cities were affected as well. In Jalata, the Malay Language Federation organized the protest. Malay speakers, mainly immigrants from the former Sultanate of KaiserAdolf and their descendants, make up 13% of the province's population. In Port Ulterre it was the Vicarian Heritage Society that organized the protests. The Vica speakers, from the former Vicarious Empire, make up over 17% of Beechwyn province's population. Both groups are demanding recognition of their language, through the education of children in their native language, and making their language co-official with English on the provincial level. Beechwyn province has a Elpidian Center government, while Aydewoode has a strong People's Alliance government. It will be interesting to see how the two sides respond. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation GDP Caps 1 Trillion The Ministry of the Treasury announced today that the Elpidian GDP has officially rise over ₯1 trillion for the first time in Elpidian history. According to the Ministry the rise was due to the recent opening of several new markets for Elpidia, and the dramatic increase in the volume of trade over the last few years. The GDP had previously remained steady around 960-975 billion for over twenty years, but over the last six years has risen to its current position. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Provinces Deal With Language Question In response to protests by the Malay speaking minority in Aydewoode province, the People's Alliance government has signed into law sweeping language reform. Class room instruction will remain in English, but language classes in Malay, both for native speakers to retain their knowledge and non-native speakers to learn, will also be offered. Additionally, the instruction of at least one foreign language is now being made mandatory. The protests in Aydewoode mostly quietened down, although there were a few calling for more radical measures. Meanwhile, in Beechwyn province where Vica speakers have been protesting, the Elpidian Center government has made no moves to accommodate them. According to the Governor of that province, "The primary language of Elpidia is English, it is essential for the success of new immigrants that they learn to speak the dominant language, and we intend to offer that in our schools." Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Government Takes Steps to Quarantine Safraen Reports have emerged from the ruins of Safraen of a new, and dangerous, contagious disease. The nations of East Moreland, Achkaerin, the Central Ossario Republic, Aeturnum, Dijel, and the USR have been involved in humanitarian missions to the country following an unidentified catastrophe there. The disease, dubbed the Kaiju Virus by the COR's CDIC, spreads through contaminated water and food. So far numerous Safraen refugees and foreign soldiers and humanitarian workers have contracted the disease. Naturally, since the G-R3 outbreak of a few years ago, the Elpidian people have been very concerned with outbreaks of disease. Today the Prime Minister announced a series of actions aimed to protect Elpidia from the Kaiju Virus, though he insists that Elpidia is currently under no danger from the disease. All ships and planes coming from Safraen will not be permitted to land or dock in Elpidia, no good shipped through Safraen will be permitted in Elpidia, and no person may enter Elpidia if they have been in Safraen in the last thirty days. In related news, Parliament has acted in the past week to assist those few Safraen citizens in Elpidia. As of last week there were approximately 56 Safraen citizens in Elpidia, including the Safraen ambassador and his family. Considering that Safraen has completely collapsed and the government is no longer functioning, the Parliament has declared Safraen to be a failed state, and Safraen citizens to be stateless. These 56 persons have been made Elpidian citizens, to protect them from the legal limbo of statelessness. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Prime Minister Responds to Borlander Attack The Prime Minister responded to the Borlander attack on the King of East Moreland this afternoon in a press conference. The PM said that the Borlanders were being officially recognized as a terrorist organization. Because of this classification, the search begins to find and seize any and all assets they have in Elpidia, as well as stringent investigations to find anyone with connections to the organization. The Borlanders have claimed responsibility for shooting down the plane carrying Kind David III, they also claim to have killed him. However, the PM says that the latter claim is most likely a lie. The PM also made an impassioned statement to the Borlanders: "I'd like to say this to the Borlanders, shooting down that plane was your biggest mistake. You have been carrying out domestic terrorist attack for months now, killing numerous East Moreland citizens. However, until now it has been an internal East Moreland matter. By shooting down this plane you have caught the world's attention, and it's scrutiny. It will not be long now before you are drained of all support, and finally put down." Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Construction of Aircraft Carrier Announced  Plans for the new carrier Today the Prime Minister announced the construction of Elpidia's first aircraft carrier, to be name the EFS Dauntless. The Dauntless will be nuclear powered, and will cost an estimated ₯2.35 billion. The carrier will be able to hold a maximum of 36 aircraft, and will allow Elpidian air power to be expanded overseas without relying on allied carriers or bases. It is expected to take approximately 2-3 years to construct. Currently there are no plans to build any more carriers. The Prime Minister had the following to say about the project: "The Dauntless is an important next step in Elpidian national security. While we can always rely on the support of our Rokkenjiman and CSTO allies, we need to have the capabilities to defend ourselves. Book Signing for Quilo's Autobiography As we approach the fourth anniversary of Elizabeth Quilo's ousting as President of Elpidia, the EBC had decided to investigate the rehabilitation of her reputation. President Quilo was removed from office by a vote of no confidence, in which her majority party participated, nearly four years ago. Her removal was precipitated by mass public protests about what had happened in Port Ulterre during the G-3R outbreak. The city had been quarantined, and almot 2,000 people were killed by security forces inside the quarantine zone, and thousands more were detained without trial. These shocking allegations, as well as the attempt to keep them secret, outraged the people. Quilo was expelled from office in disgrace, seen as having abused her power. There were people at the time who were outraged that she was not made to stand trial for her crimes, but the then President Truden declined to pursue a criminal prosecution. In the past four years however, there has been sober reflection over what actually happened in the quarantine zone. There have been numerous academic papers and investigative journalism pieces about the subject. There have been numerous books written by people surviving the QZ. Quilo has written her autobiography, a very popular movie about her was produced, and several unauthorized biographies have been written. So what has changed in four years? Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Political Party Shift Since the tectonic shift in Parliament, with the formation of a new coalition government, the traditional party structure of Elpidia has changed. For decades the parties have been divided between the center-left People's Alliance and the center-right Front for Elpidia. However, the new Elpidian Center has arisen and changed the system. While having its roots as a populist and centrist party, the Constitution Party, the Elpidian Center has shifted slightly to the right during its term in power. The Elpidian Center is now fully recognized as the center-right coalition in Parliament. Meanwhile the Front for Elpidia, formerly center-right, has moved further to the right. This appears to have two causes. Firstly, the moderate members of the Front have moved en masse to the Elpidian Center, being more closely aligned to it. Additionally, to make up for this loss, the Front has had to appeal to more radical sections of society. The election of Henry Treller, formerly of the far right Elpidia First Party (not represented in Parliament), to the leadership of the Front seems to confirm this impression. The People's Alliance, meanwhile, has had to deal with the loss of its second biggest member, the Liberal-Progressives, to the Elpidian Center. Currently only the Elpidian National Congress and Worker's League are part of the PA. The Greens also left the PA to join the Elpidian Center, however their failure to join the Democratic Alliance, a merger of all other EC parties, has led some to believe they are dissatisfied. They may rejoin the PA if doing so will result in a government in the next elections. |

We did not make it immediately public at the request of the Achkaerin government due to pressing matters of state security." Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Anti-Refugee Protests Protestors in Port Ulterre Large protests broke out in Port Ulterre today, as the Safraen Statement by Prince Regent James of East Moreland was publicized. Smaller protests also broke out in surrounding cities along the South Coast. Port Ulterre was the center of the Quarantine zone during the G-3R outbreak over three years ago. The outbreak killed over 10,000 Elpidians. Many of the protestors are survivors of the quarantine period, or family members or friends of those who died. They say they are afraid the arrival of Safraen refugees will unleash the deadly Kaiju virus on Elpidia, and urge the government to refuse them entry. "What happened in Safraen is terrible," said one of the protestors, "but that doesn't mean Elpidia has to suffer as well. We have to think of our own children first." The Prime Minister held a press conference today, addressing the protestors. "I understand and share your concerns about the Kaiju virus. Rest assured that we are considering our options, and we will not do anything to endanger the Elpidian public, your health and safety is my highest priority." |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation An Elpidian Challenge The Illumic Battlegroup 1 is rapidly approaching the blockade of the Kaiser Adolf straits. The Elpidian navy is set to meet up with a Rokkenjiman taskgroup, and Quinntopian and Dartfordian fleets are also en route. This will be the first military challenge to the blockade that has been in place for a few days. CSTO nations and Seaforth and their allies have been exchanging heated words during the incident. This led up to the None of Your Damn Business movement in Seaforth that threatened to pollute Elpidian waterways, damn others, and release heated water along the Illumic coast. Fortunately these were the actions of some private individuals, not the Seaforthian government as was incorrectly thought. These plans have been mitigated or completely stopped, and will have no negative effects on Elpidia. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Relief Efforts in Lydcaer Province Emergency relief efforts are being undertaken in northern Lydcaer Province, to provide clean drinking water for the citizens there. This is after thousands of gallons of animal waste was dumped into the Gaveo River, the main source of drinking water for that part of the province. This was done by the residents of Strathcona Province in Seaforth, part of the None of Your Damn Business movement. The practice has since been stopped by the Seaforthian government, which has also provided bottled water and other supplies, and promised to compensate residents for any damage. The relief efforts have garnered national and international attention, with many celebrities, dignitaries, and officials pitching in. Pictured above you can see the Prime Minister's son, Kyle, volunteering with the Elpidian Red Cross. Princess Euphemia of Rokkenjima has also pledged her support, and is seeking to join the Elpidian Air Force. We've received word from the Ministry of Defense that she will be allowed to participate in the tests that pilots normally undergo. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Cross-Straits Union Announced   The flag the CSU alongside that of the Elpidian Federation Today the long awaited Cross-Straits Union was officially announced. The union includes Rokkenjima, Quinntopia, Novincia, Dartfordia, and of course, Elpidia. This supra-national organization will provide a single market and increased integration between the five nations. Tytor and Kazarovia are also included as observers. The CSU will be governed by a bicameral legislature. The upper house, the Council, will be composed of appointees of the member governments. The lower house, however, will be directly elected by citizens of the member nations. Those elections are slated to begin soon, with political parties beginning to campaign in full swing. It is expected that new CSU parliamentary groups will arise that are coalitions of national parties. The CSU flag was officially raised over the buildings of the Grand Palace today, under the Elpidian flag. This is the first time that any other flag has flown over those buildings. Quilo's image has been greatly restored the past few years, since the events surrounding the Port Ulterre scandal. She's been living in a small town in Lydcaer province, and has been heavily involved in municipal and provincial politics. Despite the revival of her reputation in most parts of the country, Ms. Quilo remains a controversial figure, especially in Beechwyn. Quilo released the following statement at a press conference. "I know that if I'm elected to the CSU Parliament I can do a great deal of good for Elpidia. As President I was influential in the forming of CSTO, and I have working friendships with many leaders of the other CSU nations. In the first game they got their revenge against Quinntopia for the crushing 4-0 defeat they suffered in the last World Cup. The game was especially heated, with several Quinntopian players and even the manager being warned about their behavior. However, in their second match the team was beaten in a close 2-1 match by Achkaerin. The team captain had the following to say. "I'd like to begin by talking about our first game. Of course the Quinntopians got a little heated, and it might seem a bit strange as our nations are allies, but it's the heat of the game. And besides, no one fights like siblings. Now, about our match against Achkaerin, we played our hearts out, and so did they. You win some, you lose some, here's hoping we win more than we lose." A dollhouse sent to the palace was rigged with vaporized form of the deadly G-3R virus, but fortunately this was discovered by the Anauša. Responsibility for the attempt was claimed by Mitch Grady, leader of the Republicans who have captured government buildings in the Rokkenjiman provinces of Bevelle and Fogshore. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Martial Law in Aeternum After a blackout over most of the nation of Aeternum, the country is in a state of emergency. The government has declared a curfew in effect nationally, as well as martial law in several of the larger cities. It is unclear at this time who or what is responsible for the power outage. The Lord Protector issued a statement of support a few moments ago. "In our modern age a power blackout is as dangerous as a natural disaster was to our predecessors. The Aeternumese people are in our thoughts and prayers, and we are offering our real support. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Rokkenjiman Marriage Equality Announcement The Rokkenjiman government has announced that same-sex marriage ceremonies will be available for couples with at least one Rokkenjiman citizen at Rokkenjiman embassies and consulates around the world. The change, while hailed across the country as a step forward for human rights and equality, means little change for Elpidians. Same-sex marriage and adoption have been legal in Elpidia since the 2005 Marriage Equality Act. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Construction of Aircraft Carrier Finishes  Dauntless leaves harbor Elpidia's first aircraft carrier, the nuclear powered EFS Dauntless, was officially launched today. The christening ceremony was lead by the Lord Protector. The ship is seen as an important step in Elpidian security, especially on moving away from dependence on CSTO towards self-reliance. OOC: Sorry I seem to be the last posting on my own head of state's death. Please interpret this as chronologically happening simultaneously or before the DBC report. Also, please note a thread will be upcoming regarding unfolding events in Elpidia Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Lord Protector Edward Truden Assassinated  The Lenira Hotel after the explosion. Only an hour ago we brought you the breaking news of a bombing on the Lenira Hotel, where many of Mundus's heads of state had gathered to attend the Human Rights Conference tomorrow. We now bring you an update on the developing story. Lord Protector Edward Truden, along with at least five other people have been killed, and numerous others have been wounded, among them the Emperor of Rokkenjima. Lord Protector Truden's body will be returning to Elpidia tomorrow, the Prime Minister's office has said he will lie in state at the Palace of Parliament for a day before the state funeral. The bombing was allegedly carried out by a group known as the Iron Crown, located somewhere within the Elpidian intelligence services. The news comes from the combined efforts of the Rokkenjiman and Dartfordia intelligence services. The Prime Minister was scheduled to fly to Dartfordia at midday tomorrow, but due to the situation he has decided to remain in Elpidia for the time being. Francis Price, our ambassador to the CSTO, will appear in his stead. We have had word that the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, David Arwen, has been sworn in as Acting Lord Protector. Mr. Arwen will execute the office of Lord Protector until such time as an election can be held. The Prime Minister has announced that the perpetrators of the Lenira Hotel bombing "will be brought to justice." Martial law had been declared in Elpidiana as well. At this time we have been unable to reach the leaders of the Elpidian Defense Forces for comment. Reports form the STG indicate that the Iron Crown, composed chiefly of the Blue Guard, has attempted to assassinate the Prime Minister and Acting Lord Protector. Both of whom they have now taken hostage in the Grand Palace. Police have surrounded the Grand Palace, and a standoff between them and Blue Guard is ongoing. Along with Director Rojas, we urge residents of Elpidiana to cooperate with authorities, and the rest of the country to carry on as usual. |

Free Elpidia Broadcasting Elpidian Govt-in-Exile Declared Following the revelation that the STG is the Iron Crown, and is carrying out a coup in Elpidiana, CSTO ambassador Francis Price, along with the Elpidian MCSP's have declared themselves to be the Elpidian Government in Exile. This government is headed by Acting Prime Minister Elizabeth Quilo, and is based in Arendelle, Dartfordia. Francis Price has been appointed Acting Foreign Minister, and made the announcement at the start of the Universal Rights Conference. The CSTO nations such as Dartfordia and Rokkenjima were quick to recognize the new government, denouncing the Iron Crown. Contact has yet to be made inside Elpidiana, and we are unsure what the STG's response will be. It is hoped that exposing the plot will take much of the wind out of its sails. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Iron Crown Crisis Ends The Iron Crown crisis has ended, following the exposing of the STG as the Iron Crown by CSTO ambassador Francis Price and the flight of the STG leadership. Prime Minister Moorstone has been released from the Grand Palace, and the legitimate government is once again working. Order has been restored to Elpidiana, after a fashion. Tens of thousands gathered to hear the Prime Minister's speech in the city center today, and it quickly became a carnival atmosphere. Following the speech the party continued late into the evening. Across Elpidia an impromptu national holiday has been declared, with general celebrations occurring. It seems that all will be returning to normal, although dealing with the Iron Crown remains. The Prime Minister's Office has said that trials and investigations will begin without delay, and we can expect this will be a long process. |

Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Prime Minister Speaks on Darxit and Vienra Darxit After maintaining official silence for some time on both matters, the Prime Minister publicly addressed two of the most pressing issues in Mundus. Firstly, on the matter of Darxit, the Prime Minister noted that Elpidia itself had withdrawn from the CSU (as well as CSTO). However, she noted the difference methods and circumstances, as Elpidia withdrew by Act of Parliament following our liberation from Soviet forces during the Second World War. "We are happy to see that the democratic process has worked in Dartfordia. The will of the people is the ultimate source of sovereignty, and the Dartfordian people have spoken. In our own nation there were many who were against our exiting the Cross-Straits system, even after the events of the war, however all Elpidians quickly came together and worked to forge a new future. We encourage our old friends in Dartfordia to do the same, harboring bitter feelings will accomplish nothing." Interestingly, the Prime Minister did not address the issue of Jenka-Jenkinson. The majority Rokkenjiman city in Dartfordia voted heavily for Remain, and there appears to be some level of tension between Dartfordia and Rokkenjima on its future. The Lord Protector is currently in Rokkenjima, very publicly demonstrating Elpidia's special relationship with Rokkenjima, though whether the government will say or do anything to support the First Empire over Jenka remains to be seen. Vienra The Prime Minister also addressed the Vienra situation, today publicly directing the government's previous comments towards the Security Council. "The Elpidian Federation reiterates it's strong desire to see a pacific settlement to the Vienra situation. The only just solution to this problem is the immediate end to hostilities, followed by a free and fair referendum on Vienra's future at the earliest reasonable opportunity. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Lord Protector Responds to "Unfortunate" Rokkenjiman Statement The Lord Protector spoke to the press today, to give a response to Lord High Steward Koizumi, of Rokkenjima, concerning the events in Scordisci. "The Elpidian Federation has found the comments by the First Empire to be very unfortunate. While the Lord High Steward correctly noted our nation's long history of standing up for self-determination, and against human rights abuses, we cannot help but feel that his comments, in context, cast aspersions on Elpidia. This is not only unfortunate, but hurtful. Our two nations are friends, and I personally have great respect and affection for the Rokkenjiman Imperial Family and people. Additionally, I feel that the Lord High Steward's comments miss some very important points. The WAF is currently in the process of rebirth. To cast the blame for failing to respond at our doorstep is wrong. Elpidia has been working tirelessly to reform the WAF in order to better serve the people of Western Ardia. However, until that process is complete, we can hardly accomplish anything. I might as well ask why ASEAN has yet to respond to the Ionia situation. Which brings up an excellent point. Elpidia has notably refused to participate in the military action in Vienra. This was because we feel all diplomatic options were not explored. This is a similar case. Already Rokkenjima and Achkaerin seem ready to display, if not threaten the use of, force. This is not the world that my predecessors labored to create. We have all renounced the use of force except as a last resort, and Elpidia shall stick to that commitment. Furthermore, I see that the First Empire is already eagerly tossing around words such as "human rights abuses," "blatant violations," and "invasion." I caution the First Empire, we have seen too many times in Mundus's history where the bandying about of these words has had us rushing in where angels fear to tread. Elpidia will certainly be supporting an investigation into the Scordisci matter, to find out the truth of the situation, which I'm sure will receive the full cooperation of Ui Cennselaig. However, until that time, I think we should only go by what is known, not what is suspected. Let us not forget that Ui Cennselaig has many grievances of it's own with Scordisci. Finally, I wish to reiterate that the Elpidian Federation and the First Empire of Rokkenjima are old friends, and loyal allies. This particular dialogue does not tarnish that legacy. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Protests Over Scordisci  Protesters in Elpidiana Thousands of protester flooded the streets of major cities across Elpidia last night, demonstrating against the Cenneslaigan invasion of the Republic of Scordisci. Waving their mobile phones in the air and carrying signs with messages like "UC Get Out" and "Alston Do Something," they brought city centers to a halt. Amid murky allegations of terrorism, assassinations, and war crimes, events in Scordisci have quickly spiraled into near chaos. Ui Cenneslaig has invaded the Republic and installed the king's sister as "queen" of the "Kingdom of Scordisci." The international community has finally taken notice of the situation, with Achkaerin and Rokkenjima both releasing statements opposing the invasion, which Ui Cenneslaig defends as a self-defense action against terrorism. Our reporters spoke to many protesters tonight, and many had similar concerns and objections. Many were opposed to UC's unilateral regime change of a neighboring state, finding it to be a gross violation of international law. The image of UC as a bully attacking weaker neighbors is commonplace. Furthermore, there was a significant deal of anger at the Elpidian government, for their apparent toleration of this. One protester had this to say: "While I know the government has said they don't recognize the "Kingdom," they allowed it to be part of the WAF. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Surprise Over WAF Ratification Political shock waves have been sent across the Federation today, as the WAF Charter has encountered obstacles during ratification. In a shocking turn of events, the Charter has scraped through parliament by a slim majority. However, as part of a deal securing that ratification, Elpidia's participation in the WAF has been hamstrung by a series of provisions. The parliament has forbid the government from contributing troops or money to WAF causes without express parliamentary approval, and commanded the government to refuse recognition to the Kingdom of Scordisci. Such approval will likely be withheld, considering the apparent distaste for the WAF in the parliament and the public at large. This is a major embarrassment for the government of Prime Minister Alston, due to it being a rejection of her foreign policy "Regional Reorientation." The RR policy was meant to restructure Elpidia away from old CSTO based international relations, and focus on becoming a partner and leader in the West Ardian/Alba Karinya regional area. The parliament's actions have effectively neutered the RR Policy, in an apparent response to public outcry over the WAF's tacit approval of Ui Cenneslaig's actions in Scordisci. The large public protests in major cities have continued, now evolving mainly into protests against the government's handling of the situation, rather than directly against UC. Many are calling for a return to the old foreign policies based around CSTO. Additionally, the resolutions cast doubt on the position of WAF Secretary General Francis Price, who was just recently appointed as the first leader of the organization. Constitutional scholars are divided over whether the rejection of a major international treaty is a substantial enough action to merit the dissolution of the parliament. However, the rebellion of 27 members of the PM's own party, as well as all the government's coalition partners, will certain put immense pressure on the Prime Minister to step down and call for new elections. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Coup in Nova Terragona, Elpidia Prepares for Refugee Crisis In a shocking coup-d'etat, the Vicar of Vicario Cuidad has swept to power in Nova Terragona. The religious leader and her supporters have deposed the democratic government, and apparently executed it's members. Furthermore, the Vicar has pledged to rid NT of non-believers in the Orthodox Church of Helus. It is unclear how many of the nation's millions of non-Helusites will be permitted to leave, but the Elpidian government has already condemned the coup and demanded their free exit. The Elpidian Defense Forces were mobilized immediately. They will be setting up border checkpoints and processing centers, as well as building a large refugee camp in the fart east of Aydewoode Province. Elpidia and Sparta are working closely on this matter, setting aside their differences over Ui Cenneslaig and Scordisci. Refugees will be resettled in both nations, and if they reach capacity the remainder will be redirected to the Elpidian camp, to await resettlement abroad. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Lord Protector Speaks on KaiserAdolfian Law In response to the new KaiserAdolfian law banning homosexuality, the Lord Protector gave a very emotional speech today, what many are calling the most impressive of his career. The LP arrived in Jalata early this morning, and crowds gathered at the venue throughout the day. That venue was the February War Memorial, the symbolic significance of which is not lost on any Elpidian. The monument takes the shape of a roaring lion, and commemorates the Elpidian victory over the KaiserAdolf invasion over two years ago. As evening approached, a series of LGBTQ+ speakers addressed the crowd, as well as other such as local MP's and former Prime Minister Claude Cavour. The mood was one of defiance and solidarity, however, it was the Lord Protector who defined the evening. He took the stage at sunset, holding hands with his husband Bennett Kemp-Reid, to thunderous applause. As a hush fell on the crowd, he spoke. "Let me first say how proud I am to be speaking to you here, how proud I am to represent a nation so brave, so loving, so just. A nation where love, not biological sex, is the basis of marriage. A nation where a person can easily have their gender identity recognized by their government, and respected by their fellow citizen. A nation where an out gay man can not only feel safe, but can become head of state! We are shocked and saddened by the actions..." At this point the Lord Protector faltered and turned to his husband, who was reported by many to have nodded and whispered a word or two. "Actually, we aren't shocked, though we are saddened. Elpidian Broadcasting Corporation Prime Minister Dismissive of KaiserAdolfian Aggression The Prime Minister responded to the latest comments from KaiserAdolf today, following a cabinet meeting. The PM of KA made vague threats of aggression towards the Elpidian Federation. "The government does not feel we are in any danger of attack from KaiserAdolf, this is just grandstanding. Elpidia will not be using military force in the foreseeable future, and will not engage in silly saber-rattling." When pressed to respond to PM Mohamad's bizarre arguments about how KA "does not" discriminate against LGBTQ people, the PM was equally dismissive. "Mohamad's comments are so far removed from the realm of reality that I will not dignify them with comment." she said. Prime Minister Mohamad's threats generated a lot of commentary in the Elpidian twitter-sphere, the overwhelming majority of which made fun of the KaiserAdolfian position. Many wondered what the PM meant by "This kind of action might be a reason that the same war two years ago will happen again." "So KA will attempt another abortive invasion and lose 9 men to every one of ours?" one user asked. |
