Senate Election Results Are In Diagram of the party composition for the 2017-2020 Senate. Gold: Liberal, White: Guardian, Red: Progressive Following a relatively quiet election, the Liberal Party has retained control of the Senate, though the Guardian Party has acquired five new seats, four at the expense of the Progressives and one from the Liberals. This result is within the predictions of most electoral polls. Pollsters credit the rise in Guardian Party votes to fears revolving around recent international instability within the last five years, including the global war between the CSTO and WARSAW powers, and conflicts resulting from widespread terrorism associated with the Sorority of Materna. Still, the vote is interpreted to reflect the continuing confidence of the electorate in the Soshus Administration and the leadership of the Liberal Party. Nationally, the Liberal Party won 40.1% of the vote, the Guardian Party 34.3%, and the Progressive Party 23.7%, with 1.9% of votes being cast for minor party or write-in candidates. In spite of escalating global tensions, Shiryosians have still found time to celebrate their cultural identity today in community fairs across the Technocratic Republic, bringing a welcome respite to the close of an exceptionally stressful year. Still, our reporters in a survey of festival goers found an undercurrent of concern and uncertainty regarding the future among those in attendance. The mood is best captured by one man in Vinada Chuox, Aonuma Tosonus, who told one of our field reporters “I’m worried, I can’t deny it. War and terrorism has gripped the world in the past few years, and is not far from our borders. That the Hechisians, who have always sought to challenge our independence, have reached out to powers across Mundus ranging from KaiserAdolf and now, to everyone’s shock, Rokkenjima… I don’t know, but it’s not good. We may not have any friends out there. I mean, this day’s helping to take my mind off matters, but that doesn’t make them go away. Department of Energy and Infrastructure Announces Nuclear Power Expansion Fission plant near Flis Beum in Finis Orientale Energy and Infrastructure Secretary Musius Yuichi announced a planned expansion of the Technocratic Republic’s energy infrastructure. Several new fission power plants are scheduled to be constructed in the upcoming years to add to an overtaxed power grid that has not had significant expansion in nearly two decades. The new plants are intended to meet Shiryokokas’s growing electricity demands without growing the country’s carbon footprint. According to Secretary Musius, renewable technologies were considered, but decided against due to the large land use of most such systems and the unreliability of power generation of most renewable power sources. In accordance with the Liberal doctrine of small government, the Soshus Administration plans to contract supply, construction, and operation of these plants to private firms under government oversight. While many contracts are still up for bidding, a fuel supply contract has been approved for the Mechean Gold Wheel Engineering corporation. |
