For the list of religions I decided to use the list of major world religions, based off of this. Note that I am not trying to place some religions over others, I am just taking options from a list of religions with the largest number of adherents.

EDIT: Again, sorry if your religion is not included in the wikipedia page.

Two criticisms of this poll:

1) Atheism and Agnosticism aren't really religions in themselves, as they signify more an absence or uncertainty of belief, rather than the active belief that religion implies. "None" would have more appropriately represented them on the poll.

2) Not all religions are mutually exclusive with each other. For example, in Japan many people practice both Shinto and Buddhism simultaneously. A "you can only pick one choice" poll like this puts persons who practice such non-exclusivist religions in a bind as to which option to choose.

1. I still decided to include atheism and agnosticism because they are belief systems.

2. I understand that not all religions are mutually exclusive with each other, however adding non-exclusivity options(eg Shinto and Buddhist) would clutter up the form. Also, having an option where you could select multiple religions would not work out, as many of the religions here(most obvious example is Christianity) is not compatible with other religions.

1. I still decided to include atheism and agnosticism because they are belief systems, which in this case, means lack or uncertainty of belief. I understand that they are not religions, however they are also included on many polls that ask for religious identification.

Buddhism is just about adoptable with any religion. Some see it as a philosophy others a religion. I've met Christian Buddhist, Jewish Buddhist before. Same can go for Taoism. Ofcourse, Buddhism being synonymous with other religions is more of a western interpretation. Then again, Buddhism is highly interpretive and has no set doctrine or code of beliefs, it's an immensely ambiguous religion/philosophy depending on the culture.

I believe there is a poll option to choose more than one before posting. That feature may have been removed, I'm not sure.

Don't want to get into a religion debate here, but I don't think some of the noble truths are compatible with the teachings of Jesus ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also, I don't believe Buddhism counts as a religion, more of a philosophical system, but it was in the wikipedia page that I based the poll off of.

Anyways I would edit the poll but it doesn't look like I can change it at all. Whoopsies.

I'm not debating with you. The four noble truths can be or not be compatible, depends on your interpretation. If you want to have a conversation I'm down, but I didn't mean to spark some debate.

I disagree, as they're more about what one does not believe or doubts, rather than being a coherent set of interrelated beliefs that constitute a belief system.

BUT

I don't think either of us wish to get into a point-by-point debate here, so I'll stop here if that's what you wish.
