![]() ![]() KING TO CELEBRATE BICENTENARY OF "THE IWI" SPEECH WITH GLOBAL PARTY As we approach the 200th Anniversary of Rangi Umaga's speech which united the Maori against the Hassop occupiers King Piripi II has issued an invitation to all nations on Mundus to join the celebration. The speech, which was recorded by one of the other Chiefs present, outlined a call to arms against a cruel Imperial overlord and united the Maori people under one banner for the first time. The speech also saw for a long period of time an end to Moari introducing themselves by their first name followed by which Iwi they belong to, instead simply saying they belonged to "The Iwi", a custom which today is used only be the royal family who are the descendent of Rangi Umaga. The invitation has invited the various world leaders to meet with the King, both at a traditional Hāngi and in private, indicating the first meeting for the King with overseas visitors. Something which his ancestor Rangi hinted at a future Maori leader doing in his famous "The Iwi" speech. Speaking from his Palace in Hunters Bay the King has said, "My ancestor promised our nation a many great things and he delivered on much. I hope that I am a good descendent and I will do all I can to see the rest of his promises fulfilled, beginning with us Maori taking to the world stage. I just hope their ready for us." ![]() RUGBY KIT CONTROVERSY At today's unveiling of the nations new rugby shirt there was controversey as many fans and even some players spoke out about the design. The team have traditionally always played in black with a fern leaf to remind them of the banner carried by the first Unified Iwi Army, with whom rugby was a popular past time, the new kit however includes a grey pattern reminiscent of a tribal tattoo, this aspect of the kit however was not the part causing the issue for many, although it did not go down well with all. The bigger issue was the sponser, the first time that the kit has featured such a thing. The logo of a large international banker appeared. Fans instantly took to Amazon to write negative reviews of the kit which currently stands at a rating of just one star. One user described it as " a sad day when Iwi rugby sells its soul to a corporation" while another complained that, " a beautiful Maori emblemn of the tattoo is covered by a carbuncle of a sponser, shame on your UIRFU." Walter Mulanasia, Chairman of the Unified Iwi Rugby Football Union defended the jersey saying, "It shows part of our national heritage and I for one would always be proud to pull on any jersey with our Fern on it. The corporate sponsorship is a necessity in the modern game, it allows us to better support our players to with world class facilities and equipment allowing them to compete with the best." |

![]() ![]() KING GIVES PEN A WORKOUT The King has today given his approval to several global treaties, just days ahead of the nations celebrations of 200 years since national hero Rangi Umaga united the various Iwi's into one nation. The King started the day off by signing the Uppsala Convention, announcing, "As a soldier I saw the utter brutality a nation can inflict on it's fellow man. War can sometimes be a neccessary evil, it certainly was for us, however even amidst such evil care can be taken to limit it's losses. We were not members of this treaty back in my days and I will admit I have done things that I suspect this treaty would have raised questions about, I am not proud of these and I would never ask any man under my command to do what I did. I will therefore affirm this stance by supporting this treaty." Later in the day it was confirmed that the King had also added the nations signatures to the Mundus Coventional of Universal Rights, the Fair Seas Concordt and also added our nation to the Joint Emergency Team, he also applied to join the Network of Crowns. In the application for this organisation the King has said that he sees joining such organisations as "necessary for the Commonwealth to become part of the International Community." With global invites sent across Mundus for the upcoming celebration it was confirmed that only two nations have so far replied. |

![]() ![]() FIRST OVERSEAS DEPLOYMENT FOR IWI The King has today announced that the men scheduled to support relief efforts in Scordisci will instead deploy to Uppsala. In a statement from Commonwealth Military HQ King Piripi said. "We had vastly over-estimated the time it would take to be ready for Scordisci, I apologise to the people there and to the government of East Moreland for the promised help not materialising. However our 1,000 strong force have been hard at work preparing for their deployment, the first time in our nations history Commonwealth forces will have deployed outside our borders, and I do not intend to see that effort wasted while they can still be of use. Last night I concluded an hour long phone call with Head Gothi Daniel Stenberg and we have agreed that on Friday our troops will land in Nya Aland and assist with the aid effort there. While we do not have the financial support available other nations have this can still show the world there is something you can do no matter what the nations standing is. In the past the city of Uppsala has had a major impact on the world and I hope we can help it rebuild its legacy in a small way." The 1,000 men will fly out on Friday and are initially scheduled to be away for six months, however the King has not ruled out increasing numbers or length of deployment. "I hope the fact that the Iwi, a nation the world seems to have forgot about during our crisis, we shall not forget about the rest of the world and I hope others will follow our example. Uppsala should be flooded with aid." |

![]() ![]() FLEET TO PATROL EASTERN KRIMEON EN MASSE The Commonwealth Fleet has today left port at Hawke's Bay in order to carry out mass patrols of the East Krimeon. The fleet will consist of the nations aircraft carrier Arawa, five destroyers, three Frigates and four submarines, in addition to patrols from the Air Force. The King admitted that part of the reason for this patrol in such large numbers was in response to the Rokkenjiman manouvers, speaking from Hawke's Bay he said. "We as a nation have done much to try and ease issues in the Canals, when Temcluse closed the northern canal we made extra berthing avaliable in our nation for ships effected, we ensured the safety of all extra vessels transversing the souther canal and even lowered port fees, creating a special customs zone to encourage trade to continue flowing through the region. Now we see Vicegerent Euphemia talking of international co-operation, well we did our bit and now in return we see carriers of foreign powers heading our way. While in our region they will be shadowed, at a reasonable distance by members of our fleet." The move is in part being done to reassure people of the vigilance of the Commonwealth military formed in the years following independence, the military is as yet untested in the nations post-independence era and the King is keen to reassure the people that it will maintain what a spokesman said is a "Determined and vigilant watch over the nation and its interests." Meanwhile the troops destined for Nya Aland have arrived and begun taking part in aid operations. One soldier, Lt.Moka said, "Aland is much colder than back home and the challenges we face here much different than those we trained for, however we were also taught we'd need to adapt and that is what we shall do here." |

![]() ![]() HUNTERS BAY AIRPORT WELCOMES HOME CHIEF The Motomakar, a ceremonial preserved head, belonging to Chief Tipene of Ngāti Paoa has today returned home to the Commonwealth. Staff, and even some passengers, at Hunter's Bay International Airport welcomed the Chief home by performing a traditional haka as members of the nation's special forces carried the Motomakar from the aircraft. The head was taken from the Commonwealth during the time of the Hassopite occupation and had somehow found its way to Helvetica. Following an appeal by King Piripi for these sacred objects to be returned the government were contacted by the Helvetican administration and alerted to the opportunity of a repatriation. The two soldiers chosen to bring back the head included the great, great grandson of Chief Tipene, now a Corporal within the Special Forces who said. "This is a great day for my family, for my Iwi and for The Commonwealth, my ancestor was a great man with much spiritual power, to have that power back on home soil watching over us makes me happy once more." The head belonged to a great 17th Century chief of the Ngāti Paoa Iwi, legend says that despite having an illness, which many believe was cholera, he took over a year to die and on three occasions had actually died before his people's wailing brought him back to life. During his life time he created a large hall at Paoatera which still stands today and is likely to be the final destination of the Motomakar. King Piripi is to meet with the Ngāti Paoa Iwi tomorrow and take part in the ceremony welcoming Chief Tipene back to his estate. A spokesman for the King said, "There are still many Motomakar out there, we will not stop searching for them and will do all that is within our power to bring them home. His Majesty is as committed to their safety and security as he is any member of The Iwi. He urges all nations that have these in museums to take them off display and return them home. We are aware that many Hassopite's stole them as souvenirs of their occupation and therefore would ask any private collectors to do the right thing ad authorities to ensure the last wishes of the deceased are respected." ![]() YOUNGSTERS DREAM OF MUNDUS GAMES SUCCESS With the world's largest sporting tournament underway the nation has noted with horror the lack of any team from the Commonwealth. This was evident at the Hawkeston Sporting Festival, organised by the Young Iwi Assocaition (YIA), who hope to groom the next generation of Commonwealth sports stars. Youngsters aged between 13-18 took part in several days of sporting events designed to mimic the Mundus Games, some of the events such as the Boys Rugby Sevens drew crowds of more than 8,000 spectators. Event organiser Sepu Herala said, "It was amazing to see people competing for their Iwi with a sense of pride and sportsmanship. We've seen youngsters from across the Commonwealth come together over the last four days, form friendships, challenge themselves and in some cases achieve greatness." The event even saw royal approval with Queen Maata refereeing one of the netball semi finals. The Queen, a keen netballer herself, presented the winning Ngāti Tuwharetoa Iwi their trophy. The captain of the team, Haylee Inawaia a 17 year old from Jonason said. "This festival has been great, we've spent the days watching our friends compete, cheering on new ones and in the evening watching the Mundus Games on the big screens here. It's just sad that no Maori are there, we love sport and I know that around us there must be people who can do just as well. Take the rugby, we're great at it, we nearly beat former World Champions, we could have got a medal, but instead our heroes are here watching it with us. I dream one day of not lifting a trophy here in the Commonwealth, although I'd love us to host the games, but I dream of having a gold medal in netball around my neck." The Queen supported Haylee saying, "I think we have people every bit as talented, dedicated and gifted as those on TV. Its a travesty we don't compete on the international stage and we shall change that. The next Mundus Games is the winter one, yes I know we don't have much snow and winter sports aren't our thing but I state here and now that we will have a Maori marching into the arena wherever it is waving the Commonwealth flag.....even if I have to learn to ski to make it happen." |

![]() ![]() MATILDAS MEGA PORT TO OPEN Following negotiations between King Piripi and the Mundus Development Bank the new Matilda Mega Port, to be built on the North coast of the Commonwealth, has begun construction. The port, which will be capable of handling 70 million tonnes of cargo annually will make it one of the largest in the region. The port was proposed after Temcluse closed the Northern channel of the Matilda Canals and it is the hope of Piripi that by building this the Southern straits can become seen as a more customer friendly route through a bottleneck. The port is expected to cost $4billion, with $2billion having been provided by the Mundus Development Bank, $1billion from the Commonwealth budget and $1billion from foreign investment, mainly from Ui Cennesliag and East Moreland. King Piripi laid the first brick of the project and said, "It is my hope that this new project can help bring prosperity to the Commonwealth as well as make the region more stable. We're creating around 2,000 jobs in the construction process and probably a similiar number in terms of once construction is finished." The project will be co-owned by The MDB until the loan is paid back, a period thought to be around 10 years once opened, should everything go to plan. |

![]() STEPHEN BUTLER TRIAL BEGINS Today amidst high security Stephen Butler, a member of the former Hassopite forces who occupied the Iwi, was brought to court to face charges ranging from murder and torture to crimes against humanity. The now 80 year old was Director of Gosport Prison Camp for Men, a place which today lives in infamy amongst many of the Iwi. During the occupation of the Commonwealth around 62,000 people passed through the prison camp accused of a range of offenses ranging from theft to treason. It is estimated that around 18,000 of those who passed through died during their time there while a further 30,000 carry "significant life changing injuries." The judge presiding over the case is Paratene Matchitt who began the case by having the charges against Butler read, he is charged with a total of 46 separate offences, 20 of which are related to murders. It took almost an hour and a half to read the charges, during which Butler refused to address the court apart from to confirm his identity. Butler was discovered in Helvetica where he had been going under an assumed name and had apparently got involved in organised crime. The court room was, for security reasons, closed to the public however a television link is being shown on News24 allowing the whole world to witness the trial take place. In the lead up to the trial King Piripi explained the decision, "This is the first of what I hope are a vast many cases related to Hassops actions here, as such it is vital things are done right and are seen to be done fairly. There are obviously high emotions around this case and I understand that, my own family were impacted by Butler, in fact my cousin Tane Sevasi is expected to give evidence as a victim of Butler. Under stress and emotions running high we don't want witnesses or their relatives to let these boil over, so only those involved directly with the case are permitted in the court room. We realised this would perhaps lead the world to say we are not being fair or its a show trial, this is something we must avoid, we must be transparent, and nothing is more transparent than inviting the whole world into our courts. The Maori genocide carried out by Hassop is something the world is not highly aware of, this trial will change that." Tane Sevasi, the King's cousin, was a small child when he was at the prison, he alleges that Butler and his assistants purposely wounded youngsters to allow combat medics to practice on them, often without pain relief. Sevasi todays walks with a stick and has on several occasions shown the public wounds to his leg he claims were caused by one of Butlers guards shooting him when the camp was liberated by Iwi Forces. He was an inmate there for just under a year when he was six years of age. Sevasi is also a member of several victim support groups and has been on record as saying, "Some have said putting an 80 year old on trial for crimes done almost two decades ago is a mistake. I disagree we have seen in recent times the Andean and then the Mercian genocide, no one has faced punishment from any of these, we have an attitude that these genocides are simply something that happens and that there are no consequences, we will show that is not the case and that as long as the perpatrators are alive we will pursue them." In Wiatako on Thursday a 51 year old man called Simon Travis will go on trial accused of being a member of the Hassop Special Forces who actively poisoned water supplies to remote villages. He was discovered living in a nearby village under an assumed name. The trial of Butler is expected to last several weeks and if found guilty could result in a life sentence, something many have criticised under Utu stating that a death penalty should be introduced for these trials. |

![]() BUTLER TRIAL DAY 1 What has been called the nations most important criminal trial got underway yesterday in Hunters Bay. A sealed court room and live TV witnessed Stephen Butler, a man accused of crimes against humanity, face some of his accusers. The prosecution began the day by outlining what will be their case, the fact that Butler, then a member of the Hassop military ran a prison camp for the sole purpose of murdering and torturing Maori's whom the Hassop regime saw as "sub-human". The prosecution also pointed to a series of folders which contained some 8,200 sworn statements from survivors of the camp. In response the defence called the trial "illegal" stating that when the crimes were committed it was on Hassop territory and any trial should take place in Hassop, furthermore they said that with the charges being what they were Butler could not get a fair trial in front of a Maori judge. Both these arguments were thrown out before the case truly got underway. Prosecution lawyers set about demonstrating the connection between Butler and the camp using eye witness testimony from the statements as well as various photographs discovered. These were further supported by captured military intelligence documents taken from the time of the occupation. Butler sat expressionless through this presentation. With a very clear connection between Butler and command of the prison camp established the prosecution called their first witness, the cousin of King Piripi, Special Envoy Tane Sevasi, a former child inmate of the prison. Sevasi was first asked to give details of his imprisonment, an explanation that took four hours as Sevasi described the camp and its conditions in intimate detail. Sevasi told of the way prisoners were routinely tortured and shot while also being randomly selected to be used as practice for medical training. Sevasi explained how his sister, then eight years old, was shot with a shotgun in the shoulder and two medics attempted to perform various medical procedures, all without pain relief. Sevasi explained how the camp was locked inside large barn like structures were they slept on the floor when this happened as it was 10pm. He was forced to endure her screams for close to an hour before she died. Her body was then burnt. The defence attempted to persuade the judge that those actions had been independent of the command of Butler, they highlighted his good record as a doctor back in Hassop before his military service and then as his alias in Helvetica, however the prosecution then pointed out that his criminal history there showed otherwise. The trial continues tomorrow. |

![]() The trial of Stephen Butler had reached Day 5, and in that time the majority of time has been spent listening to the testimony of several survivors of the Gosport Prison Camp. Amongst those giving their testimony was Special Envoy Tane Sevasi who was in the witness box for a total of 13 hours as he gave harrowing accounts of his time as a child in the camp. He was then cross examined by the defence lawyer who attempted to use Tane's young age at the time to discredit the testimony. However over the following days several other witnesses gave supporting testimony, this included a 76 year old woman who had surgically had her ovaries removed while still conscious as well as a 68 year old man who had his eyes removed. During the testimony given Butler was seemingly emotionless and bored by the proceedings. The trial will continue in the next few days with former Maori collaborators. AIR FORCE TO GET DRAGONLING The Ministry of Defence has today announced that the nation will be purchasing 20 of EMAC's Dragonling aircraft. The aircraft is set to fulfil a low intensity combat role as well as being a trainer for potential jet pilots. The Ministry of Defence stated, "Our nations military is full of superbly dedicated men and women, as such they deserve to be superbly equipped, we are a long way away from being able to field the quality seen by nations such as Rokkenjima, East Moreland and the like, however the purchase of these aircraft is the first step towards a better and more capable armed forces." The aircraft, which are thought to cost around $18million each, are the first purchase for the air force in over 10 years. The Ministry of Defence stated, "The CNN deal has made sure we get access to a good deal on these aircraft, EMAC know if we're impressed with the product there is the potential for more deals and so that enabled us to get the best possible price on the purchase." ![]() Following well over a month of eye witness testimony the prosecution against Stephen Butler has today ended. During this time the court has heard harrowing accounts of the treatment of Maori inmates of the infamous Gosport Prison Camp. These have included, * Accounts of children who had limbs removed and then attempted to be sewn back on by trainee medics. * An inmate hung by the wrists swinging close to an electric fence. They were further smeared with honey to attract insects. After several days they were bayoneted and the body left. * Several female inmates gave evidence that they had been raped. One bearing a child that was claimed to be Butler's, this was confirmed by DNA tests. * Inmates being made to play football in a minefield where if they stood still they were shot at to encourage them to move. Butler was clearly linked to the camp by various pieces of photographic evidence gained by members of the resistance who had placed the camp under observation in order to effect an attempted rescue. It was during this rescue attempt that a number of inmates were able to successfully escape, including the King's cousin Tane Sevasi. So far the defence have attempted to distance Butler from involvement saying that he was following orders of superiors, this however is unlikely to go down well with the judges who are overseeing the case. Another argument has been that the court case is likely to be fair and unbias, however as the case is being shown live on TV it is unlikely to be accepted. It is likely that the defence will resume their case tomorrow however they are unlikely to be able to convince people Butler is not guilty. Edited by Ben2016, 13th June 2017 - 07:22 AM.

![]() BUTLER TRIAL VERDICT. UTU SET[1] Following a 65 day trial the former Hassop Prison camp commandant Stephen Butler has been found guilty of several crimes including murder, crimes against humanity and torture. It took the judges hearing the case just 30 minutes to pass a guilty verdict on all counts, they immediately passed sentence of Utu, by hanging down a death sentence. Originally this was to be carried out by Butler being tied to a stake at low tide and being left to drown as the tide came in. As Judge Matta, who pronounced the sentence said, "Utu calls for a like for like punishment. Many of those who suffered under Butler died slow deaths that they knew were coming, this punishment will mimic that as tribal law stipulates. Furthermore by giving him to the sea his spirit will not find its way back into The Iwi and corrupt our nation further." Butler's defence has stated that the man was simply following orders and over the years he had not been directly responsible for a single death. During the entire of the trial he has spoken very little other than to repeat these two claims, this is despite many eye witnesses and survivors of his regime giving evidence to the contrary. The man showed no sign of emotion as the verdict was read and was lead away to Hawke's Bay Prison where he will await execution. Large crowds had gathered in the capitals central park to watch the verdict being read on the permanent big screens there, more accustomed to showing sporting events, cheers went up the the guilty verdict was read and again when the sentence was passed. One onlooker said, "For centuries the Hassopite's sought to destroy our people and culture and this is the first time we've struck back. The man has exactly what he deserves and I for one will be happy when even more of them face justice." In the hours after the verdict however King Piripi took action to halt the drowning instead commuting the sentence to one of death by Mere[2]. The King issued the following proclaimation.
It was later explained by a royal press secretary that the King had made the decision to use a swifter method of execution because, "The world will be judging us by the outcome of this trial, many nations have the death penalty but all use swift methods to dispatch the guilty. The sentence by the judges is of course correct and the King will see that it is carried out, however he disagreed with the determination that drowning should be used as it will be seen as cruel by some. We must walk a fine line between keeping our traditions alive and welcoming the world." The spokesman then explained, "King Piripi is firmly of the belief that a man setting the sentence should be the one to deliver it, he therefore will carry out the execution of Butler personally." It is expected that a large crowd will gather to witness the first execution since the ending of Hassopite rule. [1] Utu is the Maori concept of justice/revenge [2] Club shown in image |

![]() ![]() LONG LINES AT PASSPORT CONTROL AS NEW CHECKS BROUGHT IN Following King Piripi today suspending the nations membership of the Mundus Convention of Universal Rights, and imposing strict controls on entrance to the Iwi from certain nations long lines have formed at passport control into the nation. The move comes as the King attempts to bring to justice more of the members of the former Hassopite regime that carried out acts of cruelty against the people of the Iwi during their occupation. Recently Stephen Butler, the former commandant of one of Hassop's largest prison camps, was found guilty of murder, crimes against humanity and torture and sentenced to death. His execution will take place in six days time. It is believed that several other key members of the former Hassopite regime have been hiding around Mundus, some of whom are suspected to have remained in secret within the Iwi. A spokesman for the King said, "We know that several of the Hassop regime had set themselves up in homes across our Commonwealth, many remained when the Hassop forces withdrew, somehow assuming this withdrawal was the end of things. We know that there are likely to be guards from Butler's camp still living quiet lives here and we must find them and bring them to justice. In the short term that means that several people will find their entry into The Iwi takes more time and we ask them to be patient." It has now become standard that anyone entering The Iwi from a non-CNN nation is profiled and depending on their age and presented nationality further checks may be carried out. This may include in depth questioning, background checks and in extreme cases comparisons to dental records or DNA. A member of the Historic Crimes Commission (HCC) who are looking for members of the Hassop occupation explained, "We were fortunate enough to take over some Hassop facilities and find really basic information such as their soldiers medical records and in some cases DNA samples. These were kept to help identify bodies from our attacks during our War of Liberation. These now mean we can check many people we suspect quickly. Anyone refusing to comply will be detained for 48 hours and contact made with their country of origin to ascertain more about them. One individual was already taken into custody however the government have yet to comment on his identity. |

![]() ![]() LT.COL PHILLIPS ARRESTED IN SHOCK RAID Wanted fugitive and former Commander of Hassop Special Forces, Lt.Col Philips has been arrested for crimes committed during the occupation of The Iwi. It is alleged that the 67 year old was responsible for issuing orders that water supplies of at least ten settlements were poisoned with lethal chemicals, as well as ordering his Death Squads to execute all men of fighting age in villages they suspected aided the resistance. It is thought his actions and those of the men under his command lead to the deaths of around 5,000 people and left a further 2,000 disabled. The manner of Phillips arrest is thought to be controversial with him being seized onboard a cruise ship passing by close to The Iwi. Eye witnesses onboard the Corinth Cruise Ship said that at around midnight a helicopter landed four men on deck, who armed with guns made their way through the Mercian registered ship before emerging back on deck, where the helicopter had landed, less then five minutes later. When they did remerge they were accompanied by Phillips and an unknown man. The helicopter then took off and headed back towards the coastline of The Iwi. The Ministry of Defence was asked about the operation but declined to comment beyond stating, "Philips is in custody and will face trial in a similar manner to Butler. We are determined that every single person who either carried out acts against humanity or aided them is brought to justice, regardless of where on Mundus they have hidden." Philips trial will be the second of Hassopite war criminals following Butler being found guilty late last week. Butler now faces execution which will be performed by King Piripi on Monday. |

![]() ![]() KING CARRIES OUT EXECUTION This morning at the turn of the tide in Hunter's Bay King Piripi personally carried out the execution of Stephen Butler for his crimes against the people of The Iwi. The King had commuted the criminals sentence from death by drowning to one of being clubbing by Mere, considered a far quicker death. The King arrived for the execution looking grim dressed in his former army uniform and with his ceremonial cloak. He carried his own personal Mere club with him, carved out of black stone. He proceeded down onto the beach from the sea front promenande, on which a large crowd had gathered and made his way out to where Butler and two members of the Royal Marines Regiment were holding Butler. The man was made to kneel and a pole slotted between his back and arms and tied in place. A Christian priest was present to conduct last rights, and when finished the King proclaimed the sentence once more. Butler begged the King for clemency however the King remained emotionless throughout, with the Marines holding the prisoner steady using the pole King Piripi struck a blow to the base of Butler's skull, one of the Marines then checked Butler for a pulse, produced a handgun and shot him in the back of the head ending the life of one of the occupations biggest killers. The King then returned to the sea front and left without speaking to any of the audience. A group of Marines prevented the crowd from going onto the beach until the tide had washed the body away. Speaking later in the day the King said, "I had no pleasure in what I did. In my time I have killed many Hassopites during our fight for independence, this man murdered many of my people and deserved a death much more gruesome than he received. No doubt the world will judge myself badly for doing what I did today but I have little interest in their words. Our traditions call for a crime to be punished in kind, today that is what we have done. I now hope we can bring other Hassopites who inflicted death on our people to justice, if need be I'll dispatch them all in this manner." The King refused to comment on the statement given by Queen Alexandria of Mercia who has called for the release of Lt.Col Phillips, a man who poisoned water supplies during the War for Independence. He is due to appear in court tomorrow to hear charges levelled against him. |

![]() ![]() PHILLIPS TO BE POISONED, KING COMMUTES SENTENCE Hassopite Special Forces Commander Lt.Col Phillips was today found guilty of war crimes, murder and sexual assault. The former leader of occupying special forces was responsible for carrying out a campaign of terror against Maori villages which saw young girls raped in front of their families, wells poisoned and mass executions. After a trial lasting several weeks harrowing testimony was heard from several witnesses who each confirmed that Phillips had been present at the attrocities. Phillips explained that it was his men who had carried out these acts behind his back and that he was therefore not responsible, the panel of three judges however choose not to believe this testimony in the face of so many witnesses putting him at the scene. As Judge Welafia read the guilty verdict he donned the black cap indicating that a death sentance was about to be given. Using the Maori legal tradition of Utu [1] the Judge passed sentence saying. "The defendant is to be taken to a place to be determined, there he shall be given a cocktail of Sodium thiopental, Pancuronium bromide and Potassium chloride[2] and forced to ingest it. His body shall then be buried at sea." The defendent broke down in tears as the sentence was read and begged for mercy. Outside the court several groups celebrated the verdict including one group set up to help those who had been victims of the sexual assaults. One lady who wished to not be named said, "Finally we will have justice, he will know what he has done to us and how many families he has destroyed. This has been a long time coming." Hours later however King Piripi used his royal powers to commute the sentence, in a written statement sent to the court he stated, "While we wish justice it must be seen to be swift. Therefore I use my granted powers to change the Utu to one of firing squad. The criminal is to be taken out to sea by the Navy and shot in an orderly and disciplined manner before his body is buried at sea." The statement went on to explain the King had chosen this Utu because of the manner in which Phillips men had often lined young boys soon to be of military age up and shot them. This is now the second sentence that the King has commuted the Utu of, however on this occasion the King will not be part of the execution. [1] Basically that the punishment should fit the crime as like for like as possible. So for example in ancient times you steal a cow, you had to give the cow back and then one of yours was given as compensation. Think eye for an eye but rather more literal [2] Essentially the drugs used in lethal injections |
