OOC Info: Welcome to an Open RP that takes place in a city within northern Alexandus Prime known as Umbridge. The city up until now has been relatively peaceful, as peaceful as a city of 100,000 can be. As the sun set on the city, the power went out. Along with the Power, no electronic devices seem to be working within the city limits at all- meaning no phones, no cars, no TVs. ![]() The RP takes place in the city center. There is a late night concert going on in a local park. All forms of people are present for the small venue including a small Jazz Band, several dozen patrons watching and of course the heavily armed local Police that are on scene for security. It was a nice, pleasant night in Umbridge. The music wasn't half bad, the people were being peaceful, and only one group of teenagers had to be escorted off the property. That was how Umbridge Police Sgt Scott Marksburg saw it, and for him, this was pretty easy overtime. Officer Pete Matthews approached the Sergeant casually, "Pretty good night, eh Sarge? We've got what, an hour left?" "Yeah," Marksburg replied, "And the music isn't half bad either. If the wife was here she'd be begging me to dance." "Dance? You?" the Officer laughed a bit at the thought. "Hey, watch it, or you'll be on stage with the band." The Sergeant had a bit of a raspy laugh, his allergies were clearly taking their toll on him. As the minutes dragged on, chatter over the radio could be heard with increasing frequency. "Central to 4 Baker 32, status update?" "Baker 32, open door, standby" "Charlie 14 is with Baker 32, we're going inside" ... ... ... "Charlie 15 and 17 are with Charlie 14 and Baker 32." "Baker 32, I have movement inside. Second room on the left." Marksburg turned down his radio so it became barely a whisper in his earpiece, "I swear, they need to pipe down on the radio, they're ruining the music." |

As the song finished and the crowd began to applaud, hoot, and holler, a buzzing sound could be heard in the air. It was faint at first, but then as it grew louder and Sgt Marksburg began to look around, he turned his radio up just in time to hear: "Control! He is activating the device!" "Baker 32, do we know what kind-" "WE'RE EVACUATING THE BUILDING! EVERYBODY OU-" At that moment, the buzzing noise stopped. When it stopped, so too did everything electronic. People holding up cellphones to record the concert went dark. The speakers for the band fell silent. Cars all around the park began to drift, some coming to a stop, many others began to collide with one another. Thankfully the speed limit was only 25 through the area around the park and it was fairly well adhered to, mainly because of the constant police presence in the area. Lights throughout the city suddenly went dark as well. The place instantly became a dead zone. Sgt Marksburg began to panic for a moment. He pressed his radio's transmit button multiple times, to no effect. He grabbed the spare battery for his radio, putting it in place but again, nothing would come up on his radio. He looked to the officer nearby, Officer Matthews, to see if his radio went dead as well, but the Officer was already running over to an elderly gentleman, who was having some sort of breathing trouble. "Its his pacemaker! It just stopped! Oh my god, help him, please!" A young woman near the elderly man began to cry hysterically. Sgt Marksburg ran over to see if he could also render any assistance. |

The electronic scream stopped, and everything went black but the stars in the night sky. One tourist, a Kravik by the name of Polaar, realized the gravity of the situation when not only the stage lights went out, but the entire square. Cars, phones, even a small flashlight he kept in his backpack wouldn't light. There was a brief moment of silence before the metallic sounds of cars scraping on cars, and someone screaming about a pacemaker. A pacemaker? It seemed that lives where now on the line. "I am a doctor!" Polaar made his way towards the sounds of screaming, yelling what little of the country's native language he knew. Finally, he made his was to where the man lay still. "Ah, skraa mashush... It may be too late." He placed his hands on the man's chest, and began pushing in a last-ditch effort to get his heart going again. |

Yua Ashikaga had decided to do some travelling during her month-long leave from the Shidarekawa Urban Threat Containment Team (UTCT-S). She was about two weeks in when her journey took her to Alexandus Prime, which she planned to tour before flying south to Albion. Since she was in Umbridge for the night, she had figured it would be nice to attend a concert in the central park. Yua was in the middle of the park when every electronic device in the city was seemingly fried at once. It was hard not to lose her nerve at something so absurd as this, but still she maintained composure as she made her way towards someone shouting, something about a pacemaker. She pushed and shoved her was past a crowd surrounding an unconscious man, a man attempting to perform CPR on him. "Oi, you!" She shouted at the man performing CPR. "Got an adrenaline shot here, ya need it?" she asked, somewhat frantic in tone. She took the small syringe out of her bag, she typically carried one on her due to a severe allergy, but at the moment, it seemed that someone else needed it more than her. Post winter evenings were always somewhat fitting, the days were getting longer, the Sun was shining for longer. It did however have one disadvantage it caused a few niggling little issues for Achkaerin's finest intelligence operatives, the Justicars, when they were out in the field, these were people who preferred the darkness, who preferred fighting from the shadows, that was their world, their job? Taking down bad guys by any means necessary. For them Umbridge was the backdrop to one highly sensitive operation, well it hadn't always been so sensitive and normally it would be far less cloak and dagger than this but recent events in Albion had necessitated a change of approach. They didn't know all the players but they knew the score which made this potentially the weirdest situation they'd ever been involved in, it also made it the most charged they'd ever dealt with. Joe Ochre was the operative in charge of the operation that they were mounting, he was sat on a bench at the park's edge reading the local paper, with the concert tuning up and some sound checks going on it wasn't a bad place for him to be but his point of interest wasn't in the park, it was over his shoulder and across a small road - a highly regarded restaurant. "Ok Roxanne." he said quietly so as to not attract attention - he was addressing the rest of the team over the earpiece he was wearing "Break it down." "Target's Nina Charbonnier, she's an arms dealer known to us for supplying several terrorist groups, recently that included plenty of dealings with the Sorority of Materna in Marseilles hence why she has the designation four of Diamonds." Roxanne Cohen answered "She's the sister of Marie Charbonnier[1], the now deceased former President of Vertfort-Vanderkloof, killed in the Congress explosion. She's got shoulder length brown hair, brown eyes approx five foot ten." "I've got eyes on the target." came the voice of Anthony Vilani, he was positioned at the parks southern entrance "She's heading straight for the restaurant, coming up on your nine o'clock Joe." "Got that." Joe said "Robyn?" "No tails that I can see." Robyn Mears said "We're a go." Inside the restaurant the final two members of the team Mark Saunders and Ashley Selvaria sat at a secluded table waiting for Nina, they'd managed to arrange the meeting by posing as potential clients - there was some advantage to be had with Ashley's family background, her name still had pull. They looked up as Nina approached. "Ms Selvaria?" Nina asked "Yes" Ashley said "You're Nina Charbonnier I take it?" "Yes who's this?" Nina asked looking at Mark "This is Mr Logan he's your potential client." Ashley said "We're moving in." Joe's voice came over the com. Joe and Anthony entered the restaurant and approached the table but then the power seemed to start misbehaving, the lights were flickering as if something was coming, each of them suddenly had a momentary flicker of a grimace as their com units hit them with static feedback. There was a level of panic among the restaurant patrons as they looked around puzzled at why the lights had gone out, but there was still just about enough natural light coming in so that when she turned Nina spotted both Joe and Anthony, not only that she spotted that their hands were going inside their jackets as if to draw weapons. She took advantage of the chaos and ran. Joe, Anthony, Ashley and Mark had to shove their way through a distressed crowd but they got outside the restaurant eventually and started looking around "There!" Mark said pointing at where he could see Nina fleeing. "Go." Joe said, Mark and Ashley set off in pursuit "Target is fleeing west out of the square, Robyn bring her down. Robyn? Robyn do you read?" "Coms out?" Anthony asked "Yes." Joe said he took out his phone and found it wasn't working either "So are phones. Damn it." "What do you want to do?" Anthony asked "You get back to Roxanne I'm going to stay here." Joe said "Ok." Anthony said, he left and Joe looked around, if everything that had electrical power wasn't working then it sounded like some sort of EMP, and an EMP affected everything electrical within the blast radius, phones, cars, lights... Oh no he thought as he turned his eyes heavenward any air traffic that was low enough would also be affected. His attention was then taken by what looked like a commotion around a man on the floor, the word pacemaker was being used, well that made sense. He went over, this was likely the start of a very long night. Mark and Ashley were chasing down Nina who had somehow managed to give them the slip so they split up as it was Mark went the right way and was soon back on Nina's tail he sped up closing the distance, Nina ducked into a nearby building and Mark followed, he'd only been in the building a couple of minutes, groping around in the dark like he was in a maze when he tripped over something - an unconscious body on the floor, he took out his lighter and sparked a flame why didn't I do this before? he thought to himself, the body was that of a Priest. Then he heard the sound of a door being locked Hide and seek it is then he thought. Ashley having gone the wrong way found herself in an alley, she was still trying to process the situation. Best thing for her to do now was to get back to Joe, the problem was that civil order was already starting to break down by the looks of it, there were looters already running around the place, smashing windows in, this had gone from reasonably decent evening to a riot. Robyn was mentally kicking herself, she'd been camped out on the roof of a city centre apartment building providing cover for the operation, in all the chaos she'd missed Nina's exit and without coms had no idea where Nina had gone direction wise, so she'd grabbed her gear and got into the building's lift, which had started to move though not for long as it had now stopped between floors. She sat on the floor of the lift her back against the wall sighing and mentally cursing her luck. Roxanne threw her arms up as if to despair, she was sat in the back of the team's jeep using the onboard computer systems to provide the tactical support for the operation when suddenly it all stopped working, the com was out, her phone wasn't working and she had no idea where anyone else was. She got out of the jeep and manually locked it before taking in the scene...what the hell was going on? [1] has been agreed with TYP |

Sgt Marksburg looked all around. As someone began to help the man whose pacemaker seemingly stopped working, he stepped back a couple feet and took in the scene around him. Civilians all around him, now knowing they were no longer in contact with the world around them, their families, their friends, their incessant connection to the internet via their phones severed, all began to panic. Friends that were together joined hands and ran towards their now inoperable vehicles. Several elderly couples merely huddled in place, not wanting to be trampled by the crowd around them. Several off-duty officers that were also working security ran over to gather with the Sergeant. Officers Massey and Phillips now rounded out their group to four uniformed Police Officers. "Sarge, what in the hell are we dealing with!?" Officer Massey cried out amongst all the shouting. "I have no freaking idea, but we need to check in with on-duty patrol. Where is the nearest fire station?" Phillips looked puzzled, "Why do we care where the fire house is?" Marksburg, who couldn't be bothered with incompetence, shouted angrily, "THIS is why you failed your Sergeants exam! Standard protocol for loss of radio communication- stationary patrol centered around local firehouses to consolidate resources. Now, where is the closest one?" Officer Matthews stepped up, "Its only about a block south of here sir. We need to get moving." All around them people began to smash windows to local shops. There was not much 4 officers could do to maintain order against unruly mobs, but perhaps if they could find more personnel, they could find out how to help or better yet, find out what knocked out all the power, and how far the power loss has spread. The group began to move their way towards the firehouse. At a nearby restaurant, several figures could be seen running from it but to Sgt Marksburg, this matched most of the rest of the scene. Just before moving on, an elderly man yelled out to the officers, his wife limping badly, "Officers! Help! Its...its my wife, she twisted her ankle and she needs her medicine, we lost it in the crowd back there!" "Sir, we cant go back into the park, people are running around everywhere and they're probably lost..." He looked to his guys and motioned to the couple, "What we can do, is help you to get to the fire station. We're going there now to get help of our own." The officers put the elderly couples' arms around their shoulders and started to help them walk. They shoved past several people as they began to move. |

The woman handed Polaar a syringe. Though a little foggy on the in-between words, it seemed she had said something about adrenaline. Yes, it was worth a go. "Stand back! Everyone!" Polaar tore open the man's shirt and positioned the needle. ((Disclaimer: Anything I know about adrenaline injection is from Pulp Fiction, so bear with me here...)) Lining up the needle with the heart, Polaar wiped his forehead of sweat and took a breath. He likely only had one shot at this and the darkness didn't help his precision. With that, he brought the syringe down onto the man's chest. As he released the adrenaline, he also let out his breath. This was all he could do. It was in fate's hands now. |

Yua hoped the little needle would be enough to restart the man's pulse, though through all the commotion she noticed people running down the streets, some armed. It was rather obvious that they had decided to use the opportunity to begin looting, and if looting had started, it was likely that someone would start targeting people next. As the doctor stayed at the man's side, Yua stood up and took off her belt. Naturally Yua, like all UTCT-S operatives had extensive training in all sorts of self-defense; and unarmed combat was no exception. After fetching a cloth from her bag and wrapping it around her right hand, she proceeded to fasten her belt around it, the heavy iron buckle made for a crude, but somewhat effective addition to her bare fist. As a man approached the scene, Yua gestured to get his attention. Didn't look like a looter but if he tried anything funny, Yua was more than happy to give him a taste of iron. "Hey! Do you know where we can take this guy? Don't think we'll wanna be out here for too long..." She said over the sounds of glass being smashed and people shouting in a language she didn't quite understand. |

As the group of officers slowly made their way to the edge of the park, Officer Phillips looked back at the man that had collapsed on the ground. Several people were around him, and it looked like he just received a needle in the chest. "Sarge, that man is still down! back there, weren't you guys with him earlier!?" Phillips was shouting over the crowd nearby that was looting. "Yeah, see if they are able to come with us. If the man has vitals, get someone to help carry him. Its only a block, shouldn't take long." Sgt Marksburg replied to him while helping the gentleman with the bum ankle. Phillps ran back to the small group around the man whose pacemaker failed, "Anyone here able to tell me if he's breathing? If so, lets get him up and come with us, we're going to the fire station nearby. Its not far! Lets go!" He said as he waved the people to come with him. He wasn't sure where these folks were from or where they were going, but he intended to save as many as he could. A scene of chaos was not a place to be for these people! As Marksburg waited for a moment he surveyed the scene around him. The street he intended to go down was slowly filling with people, something was holding them back. The crowd was becoming so thick he wasn't sure what it was that barred their path. Glancing right, he saw a restaurant, with a couple people darting down the alleyway next to it. "There!" Marksburg said as he motioned towards the alley, "We'll head that way. It should loop around the building and get us on the other side of whatever is blocking these people!" |

A few seconds went by, and Polaar's chest tightened. Perhaps this man was dead, his fate written in stone. .... But then the body jolted, and Polaar flew back, taking the syringe with him. The man sat up, eyes wide, gasping for a breathe. "Quick! He's been revived! Get him to a hospital quickly before his heart stops again!" |

"Right, sure this old man has had enough heart attacks for one day." Yua said, picking the man up off the ground and putting his arm over her shoulder. She would have preferred if whatever was holding up all the people would piss right off, but taking the alley would have to do for now. "Doc. Don't think we're gonna have a working hospital for this guy... Probably would prefer me calling you by your name, right? Call me Yua." she said to the doctor while following the police. She couldn't help but shudder as she wondered how many people were on life support when seemingly everything in the city was fried. No time to grieve now though. As the group entered the alley, Yua noticed the shadow of a man moving from around a corner. She instinctively reached to her waist for her pistol, which naturally wasn't there, only real indication that she could've been a cop at all was the UTCT-S t-shirt she was wearing, not like it would've mattered here on another continent. "Bugger." she muttered, putting herself in front of the man she was assisting, assuming the worst was about to emerge from that corner. She felt a bit crippled without the standard SCD sidearm on her. Hopefully these Alexandus uniforms knew how to handle the situation... Edited by tama, 7th June 2017 - 04:44 AM.

"Ah, my name is Polaar." He said as he rose from the squatting position he had taken. "It is good to meet you, Yua." He extended his hand for a handshake, but it seemed her hand moves swiftly to her thigh instead. "Foreigners are so strange." He muttered to himself, rubbing his eyes which were still adjusting to the sudden spell of darkness. It seemed they were going to take the man to a fire station. For medical aid? "...very strange."

Joe Ochre Joe looked around as the group they were in started to get ready to move to the local station, fortunately at that point Anthony returned with Roxanne in tow. "What the hell is this?" Roxanne asked "EMP would be my guess." Joe said looking around "But that's not the big problem right now." his eyes darted to the various streets and alleys off the square. "I agree." Anthony said "So what do you want to do?" "You two go with these people. Make sure they get where they're going." Joe said "I'm going after Robyn and the rest." "You can't go alone." Roxanne said "No choice." Joe said "Unless one of this lot fancies a walk on the wild side." "Noted." Anthony said "So who fancies a walk into the dark?" Joe asked Robyn Mears Robyn had gotten tired of wallowing over her miscalculation and had instead started to think her way out of her situation, she'd used the butt of her sniper rifle to open the the ceiling hatch of the lift and after slinging her rucksack and rifle over her shoulders she'd half climbed out of the thing now she cracked two glow sticks and threw them down the shaft before putting a third atop the car, the pale blue light was something she could do without being bathed in but needs must and all that. Where was the nearest lift door? Too close for her to do anything helpful with the situation, so it looked like she was going climbing, well this was going to be fun wasn't it. |

"I'll do it." Yua blurted out. Whoever was waiting for them in that alley had bolted off. Probably got spooked after realizing there were more people. Yua almost regretted speaking up, almost. Growing up in a poor Syukō town meant she was hardly afraid of danger, in fact, she had grown quite fond of it; enough to make her choose being a cop instead of pursuing higher education like her brothers. "I'll go with." she said again, reassuring herself that it was the right choice. After all, these Alex cops were more than capable of getting the rest to the station safely. She gently rested the man against the wall for one of the Alexandus policemen to take. She turned back towards the man who just asked for a volunteer. If she was being honest with herself, Yua was looking quite forward to giving one of these opportunist criminals a proper whack upside the head. Like most hoodlums in Himeyama, Yua had learned how to fight while she learned how to read; her brothers would study hard in the library while she would spend her evenings in a makeshift arena in the jungle, delivering black eyes and bloody noses to anyone unfortunate enough to challenge her. Of course, being a cop changed her for the better, gave her a better sense of what's right and what's wrong, but in times like these she'd be more than happy to deliver a fist to someone. Yua stepped up towards the group of what she assumed were Akis[1] based on their accent. "Do a bit of police work back home, I'll keep your friend safe for you." Yua joked, though still likely to be horribly underestimating the ability of the man she volunteered to go with. "I'll follow your lead." [1] Himeyan slang (non-offensive) term for Achkaerinese people, this term is used both in English and Himeyan. |

Sgt Marksburg saw that they had quite the little group now, but he welcomed it for the moment. None of the civilians with him looked too dangerous and he didn't have time to pat them all down, this was an emergency and his priority was getting those he could, to safety. He watched as two officers with him were now shouldering another person, which would only make their group slower. He sighed, and waved them forward down the alley. As he approached, commotion could be heard in increasing volume. Whats worse, is his flashlight was about the only one out and working, the rest of them were busy shouldering a person with one hand and their batons were out in the other hand, ready to defend the civilians around them. From around the corner, numerous figures ran around the corner towards them. Before Marksburg could bring his flashlight up to see who was approaching, his heart racing, sweat pouring down his face and body, about 8 flashlights shined in his eyes and that of his group, with numerous shouts coming right at them of, "POLICE! STOP! POLICE!" It was only when they noticed the uniforms that the 6 men lowered their riot shields that had flashlights affixed to the front. The man in charge of their group, Sgt Barnes stepped forward, "Identify yourself!" Barnes said quickly. He was young, and the Sgt stripes on his arm looked about as fresh as the face of an academy recruit. "Sgt Marksburg, badge 14989. I've got wounded civilians with me." He said as he motioned behind him at the group that he was escorting. The other officers in the group waved their batons in greeting while adjusting the weight of those they were helping. The elderly gentleman that was given adrenaline began to go limp. The officers began to yell out ahead, "HEY! This guy is fading! I dont know what we're gonna be able to do here! We gotta go!" Barnes gave a stern glance, "Alright, I was asked to secure this alleyway so people couldn't get around behind us. We have a command post setup just around the corner, behind the front line. See Captain Gregorius for an assignment. If you were off-duty before, you're on-duty now." Marksburg nodded, looking back to the group, "Alright lets go, on the double!" He hated moving at the double. He was only a few years from retirement, and the only chasing he liked to do was his next paycheck. the group hustled as much as they could until the elderly man whose pacemaker stopped, stopped breathing. He became dead weight, in more ways than one. Phillips yelled, "He's not breathing! Where is that fire station!?" As the group rounded the corner, there was the scene that they couldn't see before: A line of police held the street. An ever-growing crowd was demanding to know what happened, shouts of "NO MARTIAL LAW!" and "DEATH TO THE GOVERNOR!" and of course "DEATH TO THE EMPEROR!" could be heard among the general yelling going on. Behind the line of riot police, a makeshift table or two were setup, maps sprawled out among them. At the center of the group examining the maps was Captain Gregorius: a 34 year veteran of the force. He had a chisled jaw, complete lack of facial hair and a standard military high and tight haircut. For a man in his 40s, he was in better shape than nearly everyone in the department. All around him were a few Lieutenants from both the Police Departments and Fire Departments. As their group approached, the Fire Lieutenant rushed over, "Hey, whadd'ya got!?" The Fire Lieutenant yelled as he waved a few paramedics over. "I've got several wounded, and one not breathing, not conscious. The others should be ok." He said as the officers brought everyone forward, laying down the man that lost his pacemaker. The paramedics rushed over and began doing CPR on the man. The group didn't move as they worked him until they looked up and shook their heads slowly, utterly exhausted. Several other paramedics came over to check everyone out as the deceased was carried away. Sgt Marksburg meanwhile walked over to the command post. "I see you came to join the party, Mark." The Captain said with a bit of a smirk. The two worked together years ago, and it was then that Gregorius got tired of saying Marksburg and shortened it to 'Mark'. "Well, cant help but miss it, turns out my security detail turned into hazard pay." Marksburg said with a huff and a smile, "Any clue what in the hell is going on?" "Well," the Captain began as he looked over the map, "At the time this started, I was monitoring the radio where units came upon a building with suspicious activity here," Gregorius pointed out a warehouse nearly half a mile away to the south, "where machinery was loudly working and the building was supposedly abandoned, so a few squad cars show up, the guys go in. From the sounds of it, a device like an EMP goes off and boom, no more electronics in this part of the city." Marksburg glanced around, "Just this part of the city?" "Part of the city, whole city, I got no clue, but we have seen no help, no cars, no nothing. Could be the whole damn Empire for all we know. We just are holding this spot here, and I need someone to get to the power relay station to install new fuses but, as you may well know, I'm not exactly able to call the power company to report this outage, if you get my drift." Gregorius was always known for being a wise-ass, but then again, so was most of the department. "Alright, we'll go. I've got 4 guys with me, we'll get to the power relay station and see if we can set it up. You sure those fuses will work?" Marksburg asked with a bit of skepticism. "If they still follow the old protocols, there should be spare fuses in a case. Will they work, I have no idea. Either way, good luck, and get back here when you're done." Gregorius said with a salute. Marksburg saluted quickly, "We'll be back, dont worry." Marksburg ran over to the group of officers and the few civilians that remained, "Alright look, to those of you that came here with us, I cant advise anything else other than to find shelter and to shelter in place until this is over. To my guys, we need to head down the street, get to the local power relay station and see if new fuses will light this place back up. If not, I'm fairly certain we're screwed, but you never know. I dont think we'll mind many friendlies along the way." |

"We saw you people gather here, who is in charge?" Beathe came marching in towards the groups gathering spot, a buffed woman holding a decorative torch of the sort you'd see in restaurants. Over a dirty kitchen overall she wears heavy field boots and an old kevlar west, sporting a Mermaid wrapped in the Uburzian flag. Her black Hair cut short to a sarge. "Sir you in charge here?" she stayed at a distance, doing a small salute and clapping her heels together she nodded to the police, speaking to the nearest capable looking man of the arrived forces: "We barricaded our restaurant with some of our guests, we have fire from our open barbecue and some Torches. Position is fortified so far since it's an old stone building with small windows. Can we help out here?" Behind Beathe a small, if not tiny, cook with wobbling knees fumbled with his kitchen knife, clearly on edge from the situation while trying to hide his presence, next to him a waitress in her now torn work uniform kept pacing forth and back in a straight line. |

Joe looked at Yua, she seemed fairly capable and by the sounds of it worked in some form of law enforcement which might well prove advantageous later on in proceedings depending on how this whole thing unfolded. "All right then follow me." Joe said. They parted company with the group, moving quickly and always being alert were the keys to survival at this point "My name's Joe Ochre. I came here with my people on business." Joe said "I can't go into specifics because it's a classified matter in terms of national and potentially international security so I'm trusting you with what I can tell you which isn't much. We were flushing out a wanted fugitive, find her capture her and then extract her. As you might have guessed this EMP came at a bad time and we lost track of the target two of my team chased her that way" he pointed "The other one who is unaccounted for was on top of that building there." he pointed again "With no means of communication I have to assume she's still there so I need you to help me out by watching my back while we try and find her, I don't know how prepared the local authorities are for something like this so that's why I left Roxanne and Anthony my other two colleagues with them." Joe's eyes were darting around the square, it was still relatively calm but the noise from the streets around them wasn't encouraging, they needed to be quick about this before anarchy broke into the square. |

"I can keep a secret, Mr. Ochre. I'm Enforcer Yua Ashikaga, Shidarekawa Civilian Defense, UTCT. We get to handle the fun stuff, hostage extraction, counter-terrorism, SWAT, the stuff you wouldn't leave two boys and a patrol car to handle." Yua quickly explained while keeping pace with Joe, watching figures sink into alleyways as they passed. She took note of a garage that somebody broke into just ahead of them, knowing there was probably something she could use in there. "Whoever set that device off means business, and is obviously well-equipped and funded. If somebody doesn't get that grid back up soon, I think we're in for some real trouble. In the meantime, let me grab something from that garage real quick if it's there; I tend to prefer using an extremely illegal automatic shotgun for missions, but UTCT is trained to use just about anything." Yua lead Joe to the small garage, the door left wide open. "Make sure it's clear out there for me real quick, I'll only be a minute." She seemed to have interrupted someone as she entered, a man with a dark hood obscuring much of his face shouted at her, didn't need to understand the language to know he wasn't too pleased. Yua promptly swept the man off his feet after he charged at her. The man swiftly moved his head out of the way as Yua went in to deliver a finishing blow to his face, before knocking her back with a kick to the chest. He jumped to his feet just in time for Yua to come back and take out his knee with a kick, making an audible crack; as the man lurched from the sudden blow, Yua knocked him out cold with a hook to the face, the belt buckle leaving a mark. Yua examined the tiny garage space while dusting off her back, before finding what she was looking for coiled up atop a tool cabinet. "Sorry 'bout that, just had a little problem to take care of in there." Yua said, flexing a metal chain before throwing it over her shoulder. "Think this is about as good as it gets without having guns, I promise I don't have anymore stops for us to hit on the way there." Yua said, letting Joe lead the way once more. Lost. Polaar had seen the old man with the dead pacemaker being toted off, but lost them in the crowds. Perhaps that lady with the adrenaline shot knew where he had gone. He slowly made his way through the chattering crowds until he noticed the lady walking off with a man he hadn't seen before. "Hey--" He was cut off by another few individuals passing by, talking and theorizing about the origin of the blackout. By the time he had caught up with the lady, there was a man on the floor, still breathing but incapacitated. "Eh... what is going on?" He flinched when he noticed Yua swinging about a chain. |

Sgt Marksburg regarded the restaurant workers that had approached and while looking able to handle themselves well enough overall, save one, he didn't have a lot of time to sit around and talk, "If you have food and shelter available, my best suggestion is to get food out to the distribution area over there", he said while pointing to a small area with a few makeshift tables setup and bottles of water and various snack foods setup. Officers that were taking breaks from holding the line were getting a little food and water but not much else. They were tired, worn down, and not sure why they were even there, other than the Captain's orders. Marksburg looked down the road, his officers in tow and ready to move out, "We're heading to the power relay station to see if we can get it restarted. If we can do that, hopefully something positive will come of this and we-" as he said this, he was shocked at what was coming at him. Shoving some cars out of the way was a Police SWAT Tactical Vehicle. As the engine roared towards them, it stopped short of Marksburg. Relieved to see a working vehicle, Marksburg filled with glee as a dozen new riot Police came out of the back and hurried towards the line to hold it, the crowd was becoming increasingly restless. Commanding the men was Lieutenant John Mcintyre, a 10 year veteran of the force. He waved to Marksburg as he walked over. Marksburg shouted over the engine, "How in the hell is this here!?" "We were on the far side of the city executing a search warrant when the radio for this sector of the city went dead. The commissioner assembled several task forces to investigate and we're assessing damages right now. We have a few more vehicles on the way but this section of the city is blocked off!" The Lieutenant was not really speaking to the Sergeant at this point but to the Captain that now joined them. "We have orders to get command staff out of here and back to HQ, we still have power in that part of the city!" Captain Gregorius shook his head, "No can do Lieutenant. I'm here coordinating this post, I've got 30 men holding the line at any given time with rotations of 10 coming out every 10 minutes." He said while pointing to the line, "I've got another half dozen in the alley around the corner holding it and they dont even have relief, so you can tell whoever is at HQ that I'm staying." "Yessir. I'll stay and help here for a while!" The Lieutenant said as he too looked towards the line of protesters that didn't seem to have any sign of stopping. Marksburg piped up, "Hey, what about giving us a lift to the power relay station in that thing? We're going to try and get it restarted to see if we can get the grid back up!" He figured this would make his job a little easier. The Lieutenant thought for a moment or two before looking to the vehicle, "Alright, we can do that. Hopefully it works. Get yourself, your men, and whoever else inside. We leave in 2!" |

Yua quickly snapped around when she heard something behind her, newly acquired weapon at the ready. She took a few steps forward, until she could make out what it was that was standing there. To her surprise and relief, it was the man she met at the park, and not a mob of opportunists. "Polaar? You sure you wanna be out here alone right now?" She said with a worried tone, the bravado that was typical of her being cast aside just for a moment. "Not a whole lot of do-gooders out right now... Someone even attacked me just a few moments ago, I managed to deal with them, though I fear not everyone could fend someone like that off." She looked over at the garage, the unconscious man's feet being visible. She hated to imagine that anyone could've been attacked by someone like that, and that many of them wouldn't be able to defend themselves at all. She turned back to Joe, who seemed to also be a bit confused, likely wondering just what happened in the garage. "I think it's for the best that we take him with us. He's a doctor I met in the park after the power went out." She looked at Polaar, it was hard to tell just how capable he was physically, but even if he was weaker than his build suggested, there was safety in numbers. And more importantly, she wasn't about to leave the man out here alone, where he could very well end up laid out like the thug she met in the garage. She sincerely hoped Joe thought the same. |

Joe glanced at Yua, noting the weapon she now possessed, it was a little blunt for his tastes, but whatever worked for someone was better than how elegant or artistic something was. Now he looked at Polaar, his boss Rion would have been able to size him up quite accurately in a split second but Joe wasn't blessed with that sort of gift so he wasn't entirely sure how the man would fare if they got into a tight spot, so the sooner they found his team the better as far as he was concerned but having a doctor in the group would help since he had no way of knowing what condition Robyn, Ashley and Mark were in. "Ok he comes along." Joe said he led the pair towards the building where Robyn had to be, hie eyes constantly flicking from left to right there was definitely trouble on the streets now, they crossed the street and Joe managed to half the open the door when a mob of rioters came around the corner "Get inside." he pushed Polaar inside the building and grabbed Yua, with the mob getting closer Joe could almost sense what she wanted to do and that was get into a fight that they'd likely lose. There was only one thing for it, he gently pushed her against the nearest wall "Sorry about this" he whispered in her ear, he now had his back to the street the pair were inches apart "Just nod when they've gone if they come this way my guns beneath my jacket on your right side." About a minute later Yua nodded and they entered the building, the contrast between Joe and Yua was interesting she seemed quite straight forward and he was a little more complicated. Having joined back up with Polaar the trio took to the stairs since that was the only way they'd get anywhere with the power out. "We're looking for any indication of where Robyn's got to." Joe said "If she's not on the roof then she's likely in the lift shaft, since we haven't seen her yet." they kept climbing up the stairs, truth be told Joe wanted to start by checking the roof and working down, but as they reached the fifth floor out of ten there was a noise below them, the rioters had decided to loot the building "Keep moving up to the roof." Joe said dropping his voice. A fine mess this was turning out to be. |

Beathe turned around the people she dragged along, before bellowing to the waitress: "Go get my husband back and set up a supply run for the camp here. Get them some more torches food and Water. Tell your Brother to stay with our Girls." Turning to the cook stemmed her hands on a table, viciously glaring at him: "I expect to see these police men get proper sandwiches in twenty. Everyone got their orders?" Both the waitress and the cook immediately stood still, the short man apparently more out of fear, before hurrying off. Her shoulders slumping down slightly, as she turned towards Sgt. Marksburg: "Beathe Hammerschmidt. Asking for permission to join your mission, Sir!" saluting him, before she continued: "Ex-Member of the Private Militia known as the Mermaids. Current Occupation Cook and Mother." Putting her Arms behind her back and standing with her legs slightly apart, but firm on the ground, she awaited a signal from the sergeant, hopping onto the vehicle would it be given. |

Marksburg quickly glanced over to the woman who appeared to not want to take 'no' for an answer, "Hammerschmidt huh? At this point we dont have a lot of time to negotiate about it or to get you to sign a waiver, so stay low, and stay behind us when we get out. We'll need every supportive hand we can get." He said as he signaled them all into the back. The seats in the APC were cramped, but this wasn't built for comfort. As they turned around and started down the street, Marksburg looked at the other officers with him. They were quiet, which was a change. This hopefully was going to be a simple task, but who knows with the way this city, or at least this part of it, has quite literally turned on itself. The Sergeant opened up a small sliding window towards the front of the compartment they sat in to talk to the Lieutenant. "So really, whats the situation here?" Marksburg asked with the highest curiosity. Lieutenant Mcintyre explained, "From what I've heard, the guy is some former government scientist- a real egghead. He was part of a weapons development team that supposedly walked off the job and left with a previously classified device. Our intel guys are pretty sure that this EMP was it." He said this calmly as can be while citizens threw random objects at the vehicle. Banging, thuds, scrapes, everything that could make a noise did so as they drove down the street, block by block. Marksburg was confused, "If they knew this guy walked off, how in the hell weren't you guys already on his tail?" Mcintyre laughed, "We were all over his place. We searched it the day after he left. That was 4 days ago. That warehouse must have been where he ended up and those officers stumbled right into it. I just hope they made it." Marksburg nodded silently in agreement. The APC pulled around a corner and quickly came to a stop. Marksburg nearly ate the metal he was already leaning against. Mcintyre yelled back, "OK! This is your stop! I'm gonna drop the hatch, you guys get in there and I'll be back to get you in 10! Copy!?" "Copy" Marksburg said, looking back as the hatch opened to tbe back of the vehicle. In front of them was a 10 foot chainlink fence, surrounding a small building with a large sign on it labeled 'CITY POWER SUB-STATION A185'. |

It seemed that half the city had just lost its mind in the past 30 minutes. Yua took a few precious seconds to look out a window at Umbridge; it was quite baffling what she saw, rioters and police clashing, a black APC rolling by, and of course, a band of men dressed in dark clothing running towards their building, some of them carrying weapons now. Complete breakdown of order was now apparent, and it was coming straight for them. Yua cursed under her breath as she stepped off to catch up with the two men. "Joe, Polaar, we ought to get out of here as soon as we get your friend, really fast." Though it was likely already apparent to them. Shouting and glass breaking echoed through the stairwell, the looters were in the building, and Yua's official estimate on how many was "a lot". She was quite unsure of what to do, once they recovered Joe's friend, they'd have to get out of the building somehow, hopefully without meeting the lovely neighbours downstairs. "You have an escape route, Joe?" she asked in a hushed voice. Luckily they had reached the roof without much trouble, but reaching it was likely the easy part here. She paced around for a bit, checking the roof for anything that could get them to the ground in one piece. Though there wasn't enough light anywhere to see the ground from up here, so she really just had to hope Joe and his friend had a plan. Meanwhile Polaar was being a bit quiet. Perhaps he was thinking too much about the man with the pacemaker, whatever the case, Yua was simply glad he was still okay. |

Joe looked around, no sign of Robyn on the roof, well she wasn't on the roof and she hadn't been in the stairwell so that meant that there was only one place she could be and that was in the lift shaft. He went over to the lift door on the roof and banged on it. "Robyn are you in there?" Joe asked, practically shouting "Yeah..." came the reply a few seconds later, it sounded like Robyn "What the hell happened?" "Some EMP best I can figure." Joe said "Have you got your backpack?" "Yes." Robyn said "Blow the door." Joe said, he looked around spotting something reasonably solid "Yua you and Polaar get behind that." he pointed at what he'd seen, a large concrete block, big enough to provide suitable cover. Moments later as Joe, Yua and Polaar took cover the lift shaft door blew and then about thirty seconds or so after that Robyn emerged. "Next time let's not get me stuck in a lift." she said "Not fun at all." "I'll remember that." Joe said "This is Yua and Polaar." "Hi." Robyn said then she looked back at Joe "Where's everyone else?" "I left Anthony and Roxanne with the locals at a fire station." Joe said "Haven't seen Ashley or Mark since this whole thing started." "When I last saw them they were chasing Nina." Robyn said "Heading that way." she pointed, Joe looked and nodded as the sound of the looters inside the building got louder, the lift shaft explosion must have attracted their attention. Joe looked around determining an escape route. "How athletic are you feeling?" he asked "Very." Robyn said "What about those two we can probably manage but them?" "I know." Joe said "Do you think those overhead power lines will take their weight?" e was looking at what were presumably phone lines that were running overground between the city's buildings "Without knowing their weights I can't be certain." Robyn said "Well that's a rude question to ask." Joe said "We'll have to chance it." Robyn said, Joe acted quickly he reached into Robyn's backpack and took out two pieces of equipment "Fix the safety line to your belts and loop the sling over the line, make sure to lock it off." Joe said he threw Polaar and Yua the equipment before also handing Yua the backpack "Get down onto the next roof and then cut the line." |

Beathe took a deep Breath as she was riding along the Troopers, cursing inside her own mind: *Why again did i do that? Damn it, you have a Family at home now, why did you want to play hero again so badly?* But taking in the musky scent of a sweated cramped tactical vehicle she knew why. She had missed the Thrill the Danger the uncertainty of a Mission. And This Mission was as uncertain as it could get. Watching the faces she tried to Place them, had she served some of them in their little Restaurant? Unlikely, it had a novelty for Umbridge, being an Uburzian Home Style Restaurant mostly, her Costumers where Neighbors and Regulars for the most Part. Some even came only to hear her firing up her Kitchen Squad like a Drill Sergeant at Dinner service. Then again she had a strict no insults Policy - just like the Mermaids back in the Days. She shook her head, she had a Mission to fulfill now, and that mattered. that is if she could make herself useful. Hopping out of their Transport she glanced at the Metal gate, then back at the Soldiers: "You all come visit my place after this is over. Drinks on the House." She then addressed Marksburg: "Sir? Do we have a Key or a set of hydraulic Pliers?" |

Polar looked down at the equipment with an expression of both confusion and fascination. After a bit of fidgeting he got it on and looped his sling over the line, as Joe had instructed. He stood at the ledge of the roof, looking down at the ensuing chaos in the street. Nevermind that, he had forgot his fear of heights for mere moments before a horrible sense of dread washed over him. He half-turned to object, but lost his footing and found himself flying down the line, screaming all the way. Wait, what was it Joe had said about locking off his sling? As if the gods had a cruel sense of timing, Polaar'a sling clipped off of his belt loop. He grabbed for the line, and held tight. It burned into his flesh as he just barely made it to the end; the only thing keeping him from letting go was the assurance that he would plunge to his doom otherwise. He fell to his knees on the other rooftop, clutching his bleeding hand, which he no long had any movement in. "AAHHHGH!" |

Yua, who took her time fastening the backpack had heard only the agonised scream coming from Polaar in the distance. She looked over at the phone line, and acted as soon as she noticed Polaar was absent from it. Not wasting time with safety precautions, Yua flung her chain over the phone line and held on for dear life as she jumped. Her heart sank as she rode the line down to the other roof, but it wasn't because she was afraid of heights. As she took a look down at the chaos below her, something caught her eye, a bright beam of light arched over the street below. She looked ahead again as she reached the other roof; gracefully being unable to find her footing as she fell on her back and rolled a few meters. She rushed back to the edge of the roof, she hoped she was imagining what she just saw. She wasn't. The street between the two buildings was engulfed in flames as a group of men indiscriminately spewed fire at everything. Feeling a bit sick, she rushed over to Polaar after cutting the line like Joe instructed, who was clutching his hand while groaning. Luckily this building wasn't being overrun like the other one... yet at least. Though the pyromaniacs running around on the ground below them was no reassuring sight; with that in mind, Yua frantically checked around the roof for a first aid kit or something. |

"GAH... Yua, I need a... a roll of bandages and some painkillers... q-quickly, please!" Seemingly exactly after Polaar made his request, a bright light flashed just over the ledge again. There were screams, and as soon as the flash had occurred, it dissipated into a steady blaze; a cacophony of noise and dancing flames. Whatever the government of this nation was planning, Polaar sincerely hoped they would act quickly. He had little time to notice before the intense pain in his hand took another stab at him, and he groaned. | |||

While Yua and Polaar had been getting from one building to the other Joe and Robyn had been dealing with the looters, well more precisely holding them off, it wasn't that Joe doubted Yua's ability it was that he didn't know Polaar's and had decided to make sure someone was with him who could handle themselves, he threw one of the looters over his shoulder and saw that the two had made the journey and that the line was cut - and then he saw the smoke and he knew what that meant. "Oh you've got to be kidding me." Robyn said as she saw it to. "I think." Joe said as he gave one of the looters a kicking "That we should go before things get anymore dicey, because we ain't fireproof." "Agreed." Robyn said "Time to go." The pair threw off their assailants and were happy that all the opposition was carrying were improvised clubs in the form of baseball bats and pipes, at least it meant there wasn't a serious projectile threat, they knew what they were doing, Joe had gauged the distance between the two buildings and knew they could clear it, they were after all trained for this sort of thing - chances were the average local couldn't. When they hit the adjoining roof, Joe glanced at Yua as Robyn looked over the edge of the building. "I say we take the fire escape down to street level and get somewhere safe." Robyn said when she crouched down next to Joe who was looking at Polaar's hand "Agreed." Joe said "We should get back to where Anthony and Roxanne are." "Good call." Robyn said "I'll take point you two grab this guy." |

"Yeah, gimme a sec here." Yua said through a doorway. "I'm not about to leave Polaar's hand a mess like that." She had found the first aid kit she needed in the stair enclosure, but as if the full extent of Murphy's Law had descended on Umbridge along with the darkness, the first aid kit was a metal cabinet-- a locked one. She thought for a moment, there were two things she would really like in this situation, a snap gun, or a bullet gun. But she had neither, so with little hesitation, she popped her knuckles and tightened the belt around them, it was time for plan B. She glanced for a moment at Joe and Robyn, who were both staring at her, waiting to see what she did. Yua took a slight step back, before lunging forward, her right arm halfway outstretched as she drove her fist into the thin metal door on the cabinet. With a loud clang, Yua reeled back while shaking off her hand. "Ahh, I might feel that later..." she muttered, though another jet of flame reminded her to stay focused. She felt around the little door, it had quite a dent in it, just deformed enough around the edge for her to grab on. Quickly taking the belt off her hand and back around her waist, Yua gripped the piece of sheet metal separating her from some much-needed medical supplies and pulled as hard as she could. With a bit of sustained effort, she bent it just enough to reach inside; grabbing a few rolls of bandages and a bottle of antiseptic spray. "Yeah my right hand's gonna hate me for tonight." she joked, noting the cuts and bruises on it as she approached Robyn and Joe, the latter of which was holding Polaar up. She held Polaar's arm out for a second, who groaned in pain as she did. "This might sting a little" she said, coating the red, raw hand with the spray before hastily wrapping some bandage around it. "Sorry Polaar, it's the most I can do for now." She took Polaar's other arm over her shoulder as they and Joe took after Robyn down the staircase, carefully trying to keep themselves balanced while moving as fast as possible. Hitting the last flight of stairs before the exit, Yua noticed a puddle on the floor, with the exit open; she immediately knew what was happening. "Robyn get back!" she shouted, the Aki in front of them almost instantly jumping backwards onto the stairs and out of the puddle before it erupted into flames. Taking a moment to breathe while the flames died down, she checked out the exit for anyone still waiting for them, but there didn't seem to be. "We're dealing with some crafty maniacs here... You alright Robyn?" |
