Official Diplomatic Communique

To: The Government of the Commonwealth of Darandum
From: The Republic of Elpidia

Sir/Madam,

It is our wish to establish diplomatic relations with your great nation. Our shared border and general proximity demonstrate that it would be in the best interests of both our nations to have friendly and cooperative relations. To that effect we gladly extend an offer to exchange embassies, to facilitate our diplomacy. Please respond if this is acceptable.

Yours,
Michael Roths, Minister of Foreign Affairs

To the representative of the Republic of Elpidia:

We are in agreement that friendly terms between our two great nations is preferable. However, we are afraid that an exchange of embassies between our two nations is impossible. We can provide a direct line of communication to the Council of the nation of Darandum within the offices of the representatives of the Republic of Elpidia, however, should this be acceptable to the representatives of the Republic of Elpidia. We do inform the representative of the Republic of Elpidia that this link is one of the highest honors that the Council can bestow upon an individual or nation, and the Council highly recommends accepting this arrangement.

To: The Esteemed Council of Darandum

It would be our distinct honor to accept this proposal, we would like the line to be installed directly to the President's Office. Your designees may begin the installation at their leisure, by reporting to the nearest border station, please inform us of any assistance we can provide.

Yours,
Michael Roths, Minister of Foreign Affairs

To the representative of the Republic of Elpidia:

Our technicians will be arriving in three days at the border post nearest the western corner of Lydoser. Please expect them. Please do not attempt to speak to them in any way, to give them any form of refreshment, or to expose them to any cultural activities the Elpidians may offer. They will reject any and all attempts at communication. We ask simply that you guide them straight to the destination where the line is to be established, allow them one or two hours to complete their work, then allow them to come straight back. We know that you must consider this odd, but let us assure you that this is absolutely necessary. We thank you for your cooperation, in advance of this establishment, and raise a toast in this first step to peaceful relations between our two civilizations.

Humbly yours,
Tolin Korst, Danel la Rone, Corey Hern, Richard Hirst, and Lady Leah Mortinson

Major Alicia Franzes observed the silent work of the Darandumian technicians. As per her very strict and very clear orders she had maintained absolute silence among her soldiers, as well as preventing them from any cultural displays or gestures. The closest thing to communication had been her flashing her badge to the technicians, informing them that she was an official.

The Darandumian regime was a mystery. So far the government had only announced that diplomatic relations were being pursued, like the rest of the nation Franzes knew nothing more about Darandum.

It seemed that the technicians were close to finishing their work.

Technician First Class Jord Elmuan cursed his luck again as a screw scooted between his frozen fingers and fell to the ground. Stooping down to pick it up, his hand brushed up against another one of his crew, Kair Voll. Blushing slightly, she quickly handed him the screw, then continued to work. He'd always found her attractive. Never worked up the courage to ask her out. Now he feared he never would.

The Elpidian police had been quite accommodating, and clearly had been briefed very well. Was there perhaps a hint of suspicion in the eyes of the woman who was clearly in charge of the group? Perhaps, but it was only to be expected. Had they shown nothing of themselves, offered nothing to give even the slightest hint of their humanity?

But they were flawed. Jord knew that, and as his team finished putting the finishing touches on the machine, he dared one last look at the woman and her company. Would they understand? Probably not, he conceded, but perhaps one of them might see something virtuous in what they were doing, in the society they had created.

For that is what they had created. A perfect, virtuous society, where everyone knew their place, where not a single soul felt despair. Where no atrocities were committed. Only necessity...

He recanted the prayers as he turned the power to the machine on. A face appeared on the other side of the screen. It glanced around quickly, then held out one finger.

Jord pulled out his sword and thrust it towards his heart...

(Think of this machine as something akin to modern facetime chatting)

As the Darandumian technicians finished installing the communication device Major Franzes turned to her second in command, "Send word back to HQ, they've finished. I don't the vehicles that brought them here..."

Franzes words failed her as she caught one of the technicians apparently committing suicide out of the corner of her eye. Not a second later most of the others followed suit. She managed to shout "MEDIC!", and rush over to the dying technicians. However, before the medics could arrive all the technicians were either dead or mortally wounded.

Major Franzes turned to the monitor where a man, presumable Darandumian remained on the screen. She was spattered with blood, and filled with both sorrow and rage, which she only barely managed to contain.

"Sir, your technicians are all, unfortunately, deceased. You will please send someone to this station to collect their bodies within twenty-four hours, or we will be forced to bury them here in Elpidia."
