The third planet from the Sun; the blue marble; the heart of the Milky Way Galaxy; Earth; home. This rock, formed in times when the universe was chaotic and volatile, has long since cooled and become the home of the Solar System's only lifeforms. Among these lifeforms, one stands dominant: the human race. They are not particularly tall or wide; nor strong or fast. Rather, they survived by learning, becoming sharp and determined; or sly and stubborn. From sticks and stones they built weapons, from friction they tamed fire, and by observing nature they became its master.

The human race has fallen far from those days. The lives of each man and woman fall in place slowly, predictably. They rise from slumber like steam from a pond, and they carry on with their routine for the day, much like this vapor floats toward the sky. Finally, the vapor condenses, and descends down again, to repeat the cycle. The cycle cannot be broken by human hands, as it is a construct of every human's needs and instincts.

Too primitive to spread their wings, they fight because it is all that they know. They hide their fears in menial accomplishments, from breaking free of the atmosphere to winning wars. All tools used to stave the true questions: what does it mean to be human? Where is humanity's destination? Does any of it have a purpose? Will they find freedom?

Humans seek the answers to these questions, but it takes more than their will and wit to find them. It is lucky, then, that the answers will make themselves clear, with a little help. Keep in mind, it is as humans say: “There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.”

These humdrum patterns cannot be broken by humans, but that does not make them completely hopeless. After all, humanity does not exist in a vacuum. Being a naturally self-centered species, there is far more in the universe around them than they could imagine. That is, until they first brushed against the unknown.

Contact occurred over a small town in the far northern regions of Canada, where only the most resilient of vermin can find refuge. Each building, even stores and hospitals, built like shacks—from wood that only desperate, scared individuals would use to build livelihoods. There is a charm to it all, however; the simplicity and minimalist ways of the town have a way of drawing in naive personalities like flies to a trap, and only when they get there do they realize that they've been brought to their grave.

The clouds above the town were thick as lead—and just as dark. It wasn't unusual, but no matter how many clouds formed above the air below remained dry, stagnant, and cold. Children raced out of their school, the only one within miles. They were the only bright light of the town, the only thing that gave the residents any hope.

The sky became blurred, as if by a heat shimmer. The children below continued to walk, talk, and play as children do. A few of them could not look away from that smudged, gray sky.

Slowly, a noise began to throb in the ears of the town's residents. A loud, piercing screech that pulsed in its intensity, rising and falling. The sound seemed to be assaulting them from above, and the blurring of the sky intensified as the sound grew louder. As the blur reached its peak, the fuzzy clouds could be seen swelling as something huge and dark moved through them. The gap in the clouds was still blocked by the hot air. People in the town began to run away, shouting and screaming. Nothing they did or said seemed to make a difference, however; it was as if the area had fallen dead silent save for the high-pitched screeching. Even the updraft of hot air did not make a sound. All they heard was that whining noise.

'Screee... Screee... Screee...'

The updraft had uprooted entire houses, stores, and hospitals as the mass continued to descend toward the ground. As it came closer, the people began to realize that it was almost as large as the—former—town had been. Those that stayed around to watch could see the huge structure float slowly toward the ground, surrounded by the heat blur as the air rises away. Much of the snow and ice around the town had melted from the descent of the object, and some traces of steam even rose around it.

Its shape was indiscernible outside of the fact that it was very tall, and had a thin, neck-like projection that sat above the rest of it. By the time the steam began clearing, most of the people that had been watching left on snowmobiles or even by foot. Those that remained were few, and soon the group dwindled to five left. The noise from the object was getting more intense, which scared off most of the observers, but now even the group of five was stepping back a bit. They did not plan on leaving, however.

From the huge object came a series of bright lights that floated into the sky in erratic patterns. The Sun finally set over the horizon, and everything within a 1,000 foot radius was lit by the floating light. These lights disappeared into the clouds. Everything was still now. The noise was now coming from multiple directions; those lights had been making that same sound.

As those lights left the overcast region, they entered clear skies over sprawling, lively forests. As any of them passed by, the noise seemed to startle animals into fear or rage. The lights each went off in different directions, and as they did they rose higher into the sky, above any planes or other craft that could notice them. Then they accelerated, their velocity growing to surpass that of any plane. Each time the glow passed over a city, a shard of light—brighter than the moon and larger than a tree—was dropped just outside of it.

By now, the incident to the north had been reported, and the bombardment by these shards was not going to alleviate the fear that was already growing. As the number of people that knew about these incidents increased, the message was clear:

Earth is under siege.
