My name is Di and I am the creator and administrator for this board.

I am a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic and my husband is type 2. I started this board as a place to post information so it is (hopefully) easy to find and access.

Five years ago I suddenly became diabetic due to an unchecked (due to misdiagnosis) staph infection which destroyed my pancreatic function. I do inject insulin, but with low carb I have went from injecting over 150 units a day, down to less than 10 units a day (total).

My husband went from an A1c of 12 down to 6 in 3 months with low carb, so I can say with assurance that it works!

I will not say it's always easy or convenient, but considering the complications that can result from unchecked and uncontrolled BG, I think it is more than worth it.

I can't begin to name all the people that helped me start my journey to taking control of my BG and health but it is my hope that through this board I can begin to take that help and "pass it on".

My name is Chrys and my husbands name is Joe. I have been diabetic for 30+ years and it has progressively gotten worse and the pounds have piled on over the yrs. I was 379 lbs at my highest weight and probably the highest my BG has been is 389 or so as I recall. My health has steadily declined over the yrs and I finally decided to take my life back. About October 2005 I started working on my diet, and decided to just make simple life changes that I could live with. Like cutting out having chocolate and soda's in my home, and only drinking a soda when I go out to eat if I wanted one. Over the next 2 yrs, I lost 80 lbs just doing that. I now realize I need to control my diet even more as I have been at a standstill for a few yrs and my BG is not any better. So Joe and I vowed we would both get our Diabetes under control and we are willing to do what it takes to get there. That is what brings me to this group. About 7 days ago we began dieting and 3-4 days into it, a friend of mine Dianne Robinson, shared this group with me and I found other foods were okay, like Bacon, etc... I have never heard of the LCHF diet before so 2 days after reading a lot of info, we started Yesterday (September 19, 2013). And we are excited to learn more and I am ingesting all the info I can. I know I have lost more weight already and am very excited to see my BG lvls drop to around 130-150 already. Can't wait to see what another week will bring. Keep sharing, we need each other for encouragement and support. TY for creating this wonderful spot for all of us to grow and learn from each other! ;)

Hello everyone!

I've been a diabetic type 2 for about 3 years now. I presented with pancreatitis for which I was hospitalized for about 4-5 days. It took my internist 2 days before he realized I was diabetic. My triglycerides were out the roof, yet he asked me if I had been drinking. That should have been my first clue he was inept. He finally said he knew what was wrong, he looked at my BG and it was 400 on admission. So he started me on small amounts of insulin and the dietitian came in and my BG went to about 180 to 200. I questioned this, he said it was because i was so heavy and my pancreas is making enough insulin but not enough for nearly 300 lbs and it will come down as I lose weight and my liver sheds the excess glucose. Went this way for a bit more than a couple of years, religiously sticking to the ADA farce, taking my insulin and not losing any weight, no significant change in BGs (130 -215) and it got to the point I felt like a failure and would avoid doctor visits because they were embarrassing and every time I suggested something I was told it would not work for me. Finally, the doctor told me he was dismissing me via a letter for non-compliance. I was shattered because I had been with this doctor for 20 years when he first began his practice. I have ever experienced anything like this before. I also found out he had just signed a contract to be the physician for the Tennessee Titans and he dismissed a lot of patients.
It was a blessing because I found an excellent endo, a diabetic specialist and Luisa her nurse clinician. First thing they did was more than double my insulin, it frightened me, yes, but I was told with the expected weight loss it could be eventually reduced. i did lose weight, steadily but still freaking out about the hypos, so I found the good folks on a couple of facebook groups, kicked the ADA falsities to the curb and started eating LCHF/Paleo and I am still losing weight, 60 lbs since January and i have decreased the insulin by 26 units in about 5 weeks.
I will be a having a lumbar decompression and a hip repair sometime in Nov/Dec and once healed from that I will add more exercise.
That's it in a nutshell, my goal is to be insulin free.

Hi all, I am Michelle, a diagnosed type 2 diabetic since 2005-ish. Only recently (autumn 2013) learned that my health could benefit from LCHF lifestyle. For years I have been on several Rx drugs including Metformin, antidepressants, statins and narcotic sleep meds for insomnia. Also dxd (2001) with sleep apnea and use the machine/mask to aid in achieving healthy sleep. At my worst I weighed over 355 pounds. No one ever encouraged me to seek nutritional counseling for any of the issues for which I have been medicated. In hindsight, perhaps that us just as well.

2012 was spent vegan in an attempt to make an about-face march toward reversing decades of neglecting my health, to "clean" my veins and return my body if possible, to sound health. Now, I am seeing I only EVER had part of the story. Recently finding this group, and learning more about healthy fats and the stability LCHF can bring to our lives has opened up a whole new paradigm of thinking for me. My Mom, sister and husband are all trying LCHF for weight loss and health stability. This group has been so helpful and informative! Now my adult son is considering coming on board with LCHF and I have hope that my Grandkids will be way ahead if the learning curve by the time they are adults.

Thank you, Di, for this message board and all the effort you are putting in to Pay Forward the kindness and support you received with managing your disease. So many of us are benefiting and I am so very thankful!
