I stared up at the green-blue sky of dawn as I lay my tired body on the too long, but surprisingly not itchy, grass, my head resting on my makeshift grass pillow. A few stubborn stars twinkled down at me, and I sighed. If it wasn't for my aching muscles, I would call this moment relaxing.
A breeze kicked up, blowing my bangs into my eyes, and ruffling the skirt of my ankle length dress. Even though it was cold, it felt good on my skin. It is moments like these that make me forget the troubles of my world.
My drooping eyes teased me with sleep, but I had to fight back the temptation. Even though I knew my current troubles were over, I didn't feel exactly safe yet. My muscles protesting, I reached a slow arm up to the outer edge of my right eyebrow. It was still there. The sonnen peircing. The damned thing is what caused all this trouble! I sighed as I rolled onto my side, hands clasped under my ear as if I was praying.
"That peircing...," my exhausted mind thought, "if only I didn't... Need to protect it..."
I closed my eyes, finally giving in, but not falling asleep. I looked back to the events of the previous night. I was in the city of Wichitah, here in this infant country. This one building stood out to me. There were books everywhere, stacked on shelves that stretched to the ceiling. I had seen libraries bigger, but there was something about this one that just called to me. As I entered, a little bell above the door rang. I remember thinking that it wasn't the best slart, but I did like the sound if it.
I had taken a few steps into the small stone building, and I could immidiatly sense trouble. I walked deeper into the library, my ciriousity getting the better of me. I got the feeling that the source of all the 'commotion' came from the second floor, so I decided to evesdrop. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, I raised my arms above my head, hands parallel to the ground. Closing my eyes and lifting my chin so my nose was perpendicular to the ceiling, I whispered, "lapis, liceat mihi per te videre!" my eyes snapped open almost against my will, as if a sudden gust of wind under my eyelids blew them up.
A hole then appeared in the wall, with gold, green and white edges. Through the opening, I could see nine people, seven men and two women having a heated discussion. However, something was...off. I looked closer, and then I saw it. Their fangs and redish-grey, redish- black auras. They were vampires! And newly turned ones, by the looks of them. My parents always told me to avoid turned vampires. They said they were unpredictable. I rarely listen to my parents, but I considered it for the first time when one of the males looked straight into my magical hole and his red-violet eyes locked on mine.
I immediately dropped my head, and my hands fell to my lap, gripping my knees. That was the single most frightening moment in my life. It's very hard to detect magic from more powerful witches and warlocks, but nearly impossible to detect where the magic comes from... Unless you know what to look for. This vampire must not be as young as the rest.
I knew they sensed me now. My improper way of breaking the spell must have notified him of my subtle existence. My hand immediately flew to the peircing. I could feel its slight heat under my fingertip. My heart skipped a beat as I heard foot steps coming down the stairs. They made a steady beat. Like a slow tempo in a sad love song. Even though I was paralyzed with fear, I forced my stiff legs to stand, and to work.
One step.
Two.
Just a few more and I'd be out the door, no problem.
Three.
Four.
One more, and I'm out.
That's when I heard it. A thump that differed from the hollow sounding beste on the stairs. This was the kind of thump you heard when someone was on solid ground. I turned my head, and there he was. The oldest of the group. A shiver ran up my spine.
It's not like I haven't seen vampires before, I told myself. I shouldn't worry. Whenever my dad had to go consult with the other kingdom rulers, he'd drag me along. They were always extremely boring, and my dad made me shake hands with all the other rulers. The sonnen kingwas the first vampire I ever met. And the only one. At the time, and maybe still now, I couldn't believe he was the most powerful vampire alive. He looked old. Like, old old. And his hand was sticky. I always thought he dipped it in soda before greeting everyone. How no one else noticed was beyond me.
However, this was the first non royal vampire. Turned vampires are just as strong as born ones. The difference is turned vampires are looked down on, so they have to work extra hard to gain respect in their society, and most become dangerous because they aren't accepted. With the look in this vampire's eye, I could tell he was one of the dangerous ones.
His eyes locked on mine. In that moment, his red-violet eyes became the very spesific cover to the pages of his mind. Of course, I could have read his mind anyway, but if I wasn't touching him, it took a lot of magic. Magic I didn't want to waste, just in case. His eyes left my eyes and rose to my forehead. The peircing!
"Oh, a royal one. Even better." If words could be touched, his felt sticky and warm. Like watery mud in a swamp. Or a dirty, sick fish. And I don't like fish. I shuddered. "come here dear." his voice a southern drawl. "I'll help you with whatever you need." he winked, and laughed a laughed more terrifying than any I've ever heard. It was the kind of laugh that froze the marrow of your bones.
I felt something solid and metal touch my palm, and I looked down at the door knob that was encased in my pale and. I just need to turn it...
"you're not thinking about leaving us this soon, are you? That's a shame. We were going to have so. Much. Fun." he spoke the last three words as if they were separate sentences. The rest of the vampires were standing behind him now.
The only thing I could think of was my usual defense mechanism; to throw my wickedness back at them. I changed my eyes from theyre normal red to gold. Not yellow, and not the really light brown some humans have, but gold. Vampires were used to red eyes, gold was a very unusual color. One possed by extremely few witches, who usually have red, black, green, or white, and a handful of shapeshifters and werewolves. I knew my eye color would throw them off a bit. At least a little. I smiled, barring my teeth. A laugh followed, and I opened the door and ran. Not without a spell, of course.
"Displodo!" I shouted, pointing at the building. I then ran out, but the door stayed open. If I doubted it before, I knew for sure now that at least the leader (I assumed he was) had a run in with a witch or warlock before, because his reaction clearly said he knew what the spell meant. I knew this without even turning around. I had heard him shout, "выйти быстро! огонь!" which in Russian means, get out quickly! Fire! I stopped and turned my head now. All but one got out. A terrified female reached the door just as the library exploded with a loud BOOM! All the vampires looked at me. One was crying. I guess he loved her. Oh well, his loss.
I had considered running, but with someone as unathletic as me, paired up against a bunch of super fast vampires? Not a chance. So I clapped my hands together as they started running towards me and bellowed into the night, "AD AGRIS IN RUSTICA!"
I was instantly transported into the feild I am laying in now. Unlucky for me, three out of the eight vampires that survived the explostion had gotten close enough to me to be transported, too. One of which was the leader. He gave me a look saying, 'got you now, b****.' Now I ran.
I could tell the magic of teleportation wore them out more than it shouf have. telling me that the other two were very newly turned. Good. I smiled. I turned my head, and stared straight at the frontman's eyes, not needing to look ahead - I was in a feild, there was nothing her but grass. My eyes blazed red gold with fire, my natural element. "IGNIS!" I shouted, my palm pointing at him. Immediately, a rope of fire burst out of my palm, and extended until it touched his body. I willed it to wrap around him and is two comrades, engulfing them all in the flames. I twisted my fingers around the rope of flames, and tugged, it having no negative effects on me. The trio practically flew to me. They stopped more or lees ten feet in front of me.
"Valete." I whispered. Their bodies imploded, and my rope of fire fell to the grass, burning out starting at the tip until it got to my hand. All that was left was a few burnt blades, and a faint red mark on the center of my palm.
After that, I just ran. And ran. Until my body couldn't take it anymore, and yet I still kept going. I stopped when the sky lighted.
I rolled back onto my back. I doubted I'd ever forget that memory. When I get back to the witch's kingdom, I'll go see the healer. She has to know a spell to erase memories. I sighed. Time to move, I thought.
I got onto my knees, and pressed my palm into the ground as far as it would go. I inhaled deeply, and exhaled. Concentrating on the earth, I saw the longitude and latitude lines appear in my mind. I am still in the infant country, but a lot farther away from Wichitah, Kansas than I thought. I don't remember exactly what state I'm in now. I'll check a map when I get to a city. Until then, I just have to walk. I stood up onto my heels, and swayed from slight dizzyness.
One foot in front of the other, I started walking.
