I crouched low to the ground, staring ahead. The rabbit moved slightly closer. I tensed. I waited for it to move closer, but suddenly the wind changed slightly. My scent blew towards the rabbit. It sniffed the air, and took off. I ran after it, determined not to let it get away, when a reddish-brown blur shot out of some bushes. It pounced on the rabbit, killing it, while I skidded to halt. It looked up, the carcass dangling from his jaws. It was another wolf. I glared him. "That was my catch," I growled. He looked at me and wagged his tail slightly. I rolled my eyes. I could never stay mad at my brother for long. He dropped the prey, and we both started to eat. When I had eaten my fill, I looked up and stared through the trees. A cool breeze blew from the north, bringing with it a sharp scent which could only mean we were near the city. I sighed. "Come on Luke, hurry up. We have to keep moving." He looked up at me, finished the rabbit, and licked his lips. "Alirght, I'm ready!"

We began to walk through the trees, building up speed as we went, until we were loping through the forest. Luke was limping slightly, still recovering from a twisting his ankle a few days ago. The bitter scent of the city began to get stronger, which meant we were getting closer to the city. I looked at Luke. "Ready to continue?" I asked him. He nodded "All set, Angie." Our bodies began to change, the fur turning into feathers, our legs into wings, and our bodies shrinking until we had turned into pigeons. We took to the air, soring out of the forest. We were near the city now; I could see it from our vantage point. We flew toward the city, the wind from behind us, propelling us forward.

It was dark by the time we finally reached the city. New York glittered below us, and a smog seemed to cover the city. We spirled downwrd, the lights getting brighter. We finally lighted down in an alley, and changed into our human form.

I took a breathe, wrinkling my nose a the putrid scent of the city. "Whose idea was it to come here again?" I asked Luke. "Your's, I think." He replied."Oh yeah. . ." I muttered. I touched my necklace, which glowed faintly, signaling it was almost a full moon. Signaling it was almost at it's full power.

I just kept on running, even after I got tired. It felt like I could never, WOULD never, stop. And I am okay with that. There is nothing more 'gnarlley' that running at full speed, not knowing where you'll end up. I obviously know that I'm in New York state, the billboard on top of the ticket lady with nice boobs said so. I don't know where in New York, though. I hope close to the city. Wolves aren't very into the urban life style, but I'm always open to trying new things. Yes, there are things that even I haven't tried yet. This world is always evolving.
So here I am, running, my paws pounding on the soft earth repeatedly, booming a consistant tempo in my ears.
Boom Blurblur boom.
Boom blurblur boom.
Boom blurblur boom.
I can run faster than normal wolves, by about five to seven times. We werewolves are also bigger than normal wolves. So in the time it would take any regular wolf to run a mile at a consistant full sprint, let's say, five minutes, would only take me forty seconds to a minute. So yeah, I'm pretty fast.
After about twenty minutes of my pace never slowing, I saw skyscrapers, and bright lights. If I turned slightly, a saw a bridge stretching across the glissening waves, made with more diamonds than water. A beatutiful sight to any eye from any time. Especially one born in 1192.
I trotted to the outskirts of the city, and shifted behind a thicker tree. The shift back isn't really as pleasant as the shift to. Think of bones growing faster than skin. Now, allow me to put this image into your mind: Think of bones growing so much faster than the skin that they burst out of the wrists. You are probably invisioning a bloody sight. Technically, it's not that bloody, BECAUSE, as the blood starts spilling out of the holes the bones made, the skin finally desides to catch up and it creeps up and over the bones until it holds them in like a glove, and catches any blood before it falls to the ground. Of course, this only applies for the arms.
As for the legs, it's a whole different process. The first thing that happens is your butt will all of a sudden rise into the air, because your legs are straight. So when they are shifting, they are going to remain straight. Then your paws will shloop out into feet. Mine tend to remain as paws until the very end of my transformation. Think of it as human length feet, but paws. Afterwards, I push myself upright to avoid any mishaps during the completion of my Shift. Lastly, my tail gets sucked into my tail bone by tearing the skin above my butt and sliding in, my skin healing itself before it can get infected. My elongaged paws become pink toes, and my fur thins out and shrinks. As you can tell, if it wasn't for a were's healing ability, we'd die during the first Shift. And as I have said before, it's completly painless. All you can do is hear the grotesqueness of it.
Now as a human, I have to be an awkward, or attractive sight to some of you ladies, standing behind a tree in nothing but a pair of skin tight underwear. This is one of those moments where I love the invention of the wolf packs. Not my Pack, but my bag that I am able to carry as a wolf. It attaches to my neck, and acts like a dog collar. It's only big enough to hold one shirt and one pair of pants with some flip-flops.
As as I dumped it out, I noticed I'd need to get a new shirt, pant, and sandal. I've never paid attention to it much before, but now as I look at it, I can see a long tear down the side of one of the pant legs, and a huge hole in the knee on the other. My shirt was fine, just a little tight when I put it on. Plus, my sandals weren't falling apart, they were just beat up and the soles weren't as thick as before. But in New York, I can get new ones, no problem. As one of the oldest were's alive, i learned to pick up a few things. One of those things being the ability to sew. So on the inside of the pack, I attached a pocket from an old pair of jeans where I keep a wallet. Inside is a debit card with access to an account currently holding over 3 million dollars, and about five hundred dollars cash. I can also tell you that I haven't speant a single penny of the cash in five years, and rarely open the account. When you're a wolf, you find other ways to live.
I entered the city, and looked around. This isn't the first time I've been to the city, so I'm used to all the smells. I look around. Some things have changed. These two towers that used to be here are gone, and some new buildings have been built in other places. Other than that, It's still good ol' New York City. I walked a few blocks into the city, and turned a corner, passed an Alley, saw a hot chick with a dude, some houses...wait, WHAT? I did a double take and walked a few steps back, until I was looking into the alley. Like I knew I saw, there was a hot chick talking to some dude. I let out a low growl. They appeared to be arguing. Time to make my move.
I walked into the alley, and shouted, "Hey, there, friend!" Looking straight at where I thought the guy's face was. "You having a problem?" I was at them now. Maybe standing a little too close to the girl. I put my arm around her shoulders; a protective jesture. Not to mention a dominant one. "You leave this girl alone, ya hear? You don't mess with her." I dropped my hand down to the small of her back and lead her out of the alley. Not without a sharp pain in the back of my head, and lights dancing in front of my eyes.
Turning around quick as a shark while simultainiously pushing the girl behind me, I growled at the guy. What kind of audasity must he have to hit a guy protecting, and possibly winning, a girl from him? His fists were raised, and I screamed at him, "You don't punch me, 'kay?" And I ran up to him and socked him right in the nose, blood squirting everywhere. He howled in pain, clutching the broken bone as much as he could without damaging it more.
I felt a pounding on my back. The girl!I thought. I turned around to face her. "Don't worry, young lady. That guy won't bother you ever again. I'll protect you from any evil machinations of any vile creature who tried to put an unwanted hand or word on you. You're safe with me."
She was looking at me, with eyes the color of ampythist. Then, her attention shifted to behind me. What on Earth is behind me that is more important the me, myself? I turned, too, and was looking straight into the eye of someone with a bloody, broken nose. His purple eyes the last thing I saw, "That evil machination is her brother," the last thing I heard. The last thing to feel was a throbbing pain on and over my left eye, the last thing to taste was the mixture of blood and burgers falling into my nose. Then the world turned dark.

Luke and I were talking when some guy walked into the alley. "Hey there, friend." He stepped closer. "You having a problem?" He asked. He was with us now, and was standing close to me. A little too close to me, in my opinion. He put his arm on my shoulders, which Luke and I didn't like. I could tell, I saw his jaw tighten a little bit. Plus, I hated it when someone tried to use a dominate gesture on me. "You leave this girl alone, ya hear? You don't mess with her." He put his hand on the small of my back, trying to lead me out of the alley. I was too shocked to react to anything. Suddenly the guy stumbled, and I saw why. Luke had punched him in the back of the neck. The guy whirled around. "Don't punch me, 'kay?" He shouted. He ran up to Luke and punched him in the nose. I saw the blood flowing down his face. He tried to cover his nose without damaging it more. That was it. I ran up and punched the guy in the back. He turned around to look at me. "Don't worry young lady. That guy won't bother you ever again. I'll protect you from any evil machinations of any vile creature who tried to put an unwanted hand or word on you. You're safe with me." He's so arrogant! I thought. He looked into my eyes. His were a yellow-orange color. Like amber. I looked behind him, at Luke. He seemed shocked I wasn't looking at him. I rolled my eyes. He turned around, and he was looking straight into Luke's face. "That evil machination is her brother," Luke growled, and punched him in the face. The guy blacked out.

"Luke!" I snapped. "Why would you do that?" He shrugged. "It's not like you liked him." "Yeah, but now there's body in the alley." I replied. He was right though: He had seemed like a jerk. He thought he was helping though, I thought to myself. "So, what are we going to do now?" I asked Luke. "We could bury the body," he suggested. I rolled my eyes. "No, he's not dead." "Too bad. . ." Luke muttered. I looked around. There wasn't much around here. "Move him against the wall." I told Luke. "Than he's out of the way." He rolled his eyes, but dragged the guy over to the wall, hidden by shadows. "Can we go now?" He asked. "As much as I want to, we have to wait for him to wake up." "But. . ." He started, then trailed off when he saw the look on my face, the look that told him I wasn't backing down. He sighed dramatically. He stalked over to the other side of the alley and leaned against the wall. "How long do we have to stay here?" He whined. "Just long enough until he wakes up. Then we know he's alive." Luke snorted, using the sleeve of his jacket to stop his bleeding nose. I walked up next to him. "We'll go see a doctor or something later." I told him. "No," He shook his head. "I'll be fine." So we stood, hidden by shadows, waiting for the guy to wake up.

"mmmnmnnn.....mmmnmnnn..." the dark world grew light as my eyes slowly opened. Black spots danced at the edges of my vision, and a throbbing pain was pulsing over my left eye. I heard a female voice, at first unclear, but then words formed, "Move him against the wall, then he's out of the way."

There was a pause. I thought about getting up, but it felt as if all my blood was in my head, and the iron decided to multiply and become a huge weight pressing down on my brain. I knew I wasn't out very long, but long enough to slow my healing down. When we weres get knocked unconscious, our healing abilities slow down. I probably have a black eye now. Sh*t, the scene in the alley came back to be as quick a switch turning on a light.

All of a sudden, strong hands grabbed my legs, and I slid across small rocks and concrete, ripping my jeans even more, and the back of my not-'till-then ripped shirt. Pebbles dug into my back. This dude was going to get it when I had my chance. He kind of tossed me against the wall on the side of the alley, and stood over my body. I made sure to keep my eyes closed.

"Can we go now? As much as I want to, we don't have to wait for him to wake up." a pause. "How long do we have to wait here?" he wined. Jeez, what a complainer. Put him in the worst war of known history (the weres vs. vamps.) for a hundred years and then let him try his luck at complaining.

"Just long enough until he wakes up. Then we'll know he's alive." The girls voice. My heart warmed up to her. Nope, no grudge against her. The tip-tap, click-clack of footsteps crossed by me. I opened my eyes a little, just enough for me to see, but not enough for them to see that my eyes were open. My eyelashes did get in the way a bit, but that can be ignored.

The first thing I saw were a nice pair of legs. This chick was amazing. Then, "We'll go see a doctor or something later." I could see anything above their torsos, but I did see her...brother? turn away from her.

"No. I'll be fine," was his reply. Yeah, fine until I reveal myself.

I waited. Just laying there, my feet falling asleep, and my healing still slow from my unconciousness. I almost laughed out loud. This has to be the first time in a century or two where I've been knocked unconcious and my healing abilities have slowed. However, I almost laughed OUT LOUD. That doesn't mean I didn't open my mouth and heave out a diaphragm full of air.

I must have been louder than I thought, because their heads turned down at me so fast, I was surprized their necks didn't snap off their shoulders. The girl crouched down like a catcher on a baseball team, her fingers touching the ground for balance. She leaned her shoulders forward, and turned her head to the lower side until her ear was practically touching her shoulder. The way her mouth pursed and brows furrowed as she was trying to tell if I was awake was the cutest thing. Her brother didn't crouch, but instead he leaned forward behind her, his hands on his knees. His ear was also practically touching his shoulder, and if it wasn't for his rounder nose tip, shorter hair, and squarer jaw, they'd be identical. It always amazed me, the similarity between siblings.

Unfortunately for me, I've always had a very sensitive nose, so when she twisted her shoulders again until the lower side became the higher, he long ponytail flipped across her back, down over her boo-breast, (you always want to be respectful to the ladies you like) and on the tip of my nostrils. Here it comes, I thought as I sneezed out a hurricane. And right into her face. I flinched once I opened my eyes all the way, and saw my boogers splattered on her collar bone.

She looked absolutely disgusted, and when I sat up, raised my hands and apologized, she stood up quick as a missile, and turned away from me, pulling napkins out of her pocket. Her brother looked down at me, equally disgusted, but with something else visible in his eyes. It didn't take long until I saw an unbelievable amount of smugness. Stupid, protective brothers. I hated this guy. Well, I don't think I can say that. I would have been the exact same way for my younger sister.

The memory of her -Anna- made me tear (sp) up. She had been paralyzed in the war. There are certain injuries that can't be healed by our enhanced abilities. Paralysis is one of them. It got to her head, the inability to walk. The doctor had said that if she shifted, her wolf form might not be paralyzed. If it ws true, she'd have to live out her life as a wolf, which hadn't been unheard of, but was still a rare, and hard life, but a life nonetheless. It hadn't worked. Instead, it just broke her backbone more, so when she shifted back to a human, she was twisted like a wrung up towel. I killed the doctor, and a week later, she killed herself.

No, I didn't hate this boy anymore. Any grudges have been erased. He was just protecting his sister, something I couldn't do. A single tear (sp) escaped its previously closed duct. Anna had that effect on people. She was able to help them forgive. God, I missed her. However, the kid started laughing at me. I didn't care anymore. He could laugh all we wanted. But I promise, I will protect this girl like I couldn't protect Anna.

The first step in protection, is building trust. So I tore off the hem of my shirt, and offered it to her as a tissue. At first she glared at me, but accepted it anyway. I gave a weak smile, and her features softened up a bit. Then I turned to her brother, and apologised. His laughing eyes turned to surprise, and he nodded.

I was about to walk out of the alley, until I saw a quick wisp of the dark blue-grey color of his aura. Now, we weres usually can't see auras, but everyonce in a while, it is possible to pop up. Like now. And I only know of one species that is combined with a blue shade and grey, and those are:

"Shapeshifters?"

After Luke put the guy against the wall, we waited for him to wake up. We heard him sigh quiety. A human wouldn't have been able to hear it, but because of our shapeshifting abilities, our senses were enhanced. I crouched low to the ground, trying to see if I could hear him breathing. When I turned my head, my hair brushed his nose, and he sneezed. On my neck. I jumped back in disgust, taking some napkins out of my pocket and wiping my neck off. Luke looked a little smug. I glared at him. Now was not the time to act like a jerk. Suddenly, a tear rolled down the guy's cheek. Luke laughed at him. The guy stood up, tore off the hem of his shirt and offered it to me. I glare him, but accepted it anyway. If he was trying to make amends, I may as well let him. He even apoligized to Luke, which left him speechless. I smiled a little bit. We turned to walk out of the alley, when the guy suddenly stopped. He looked hard at us, and saked "Shapeshifters?"

I whirled around. Before I said anything, I sniffed the air. Quickly, quietly. An odd scent reached my nostrils, coming from the strange guy. It wasn't human; it was off. Like.....a wolf. While most shapeshifters can't see auras, we can smell, doue to our heightend senses. There are only two species that can smell like wolves: shapeshifters and werewolves. And this guy onlly carried a wolf scent not that of any other animal. I nodded. "Yes," I replied slowly. "And you're a werewolf?"

"Yes... And you're a werewolf?" she stated more than asked.

I smiled my lopsided grin. "You're smart." I replied, and winked. I don't know why, it just seemed to fit into the moment.

"What's that supposed to mean?" she asked, hands on her hips.

"Whatever you want it to." I winked again. She tried to look annoyed, I could tell, but I saw the corners of her lips tug upward, and she'd force them down, but they were insistent. I made a face, and then a full on grin came out, illuminating her face like an amphthyst under a torch. Wait, flashlight. We're in America now.

"I'm Rider. Rider Rhodes," I said, hand extended toward the brother. He accepted it.

"Luke."

"Do I have the honor of knowing your name?" I asked her, bowing, right hand extended toward her the whole time.

"Angie," she said, almost a question.

"Confused about your own name? And your what, 500?" I winked a third time, and kissed the back of her small, uncalloused palm.

My lips have never before felt something so soft. It made me wonder what her lips felt like.

I tried to look annoyed, something i already knew I was going to fail at. He made a face, and I broke out grinning. I couldn't help it, he was just so ridiculous! "I'm Rider, Rider Rhodes." He said, extending his hand toward Luke. Luke took it. "My name's Luke." He replied. "And do I have the honor of knowing your name?" He asked, bowing and keeping his right hand extended. I took it. "Angie," I said. It came out sounding more like question. "Confused about your own name? And you're what, 500?" Hw winked a third time, and kissed the back of my hand.

I pulled my hand away. I didn't really like people touching me. Memories of home flooded my mind. I brushed them off. Now wasn't time to think about what had happened. Instead I answered Rider's question. "We're 543, if you want to be exact. And you're older? You're too polite to be very young" I replied.

She pulled her hand away, a little too quickly. I couldn't help the rush of sadness that flooded my chest. I was able to erase the emotion from my face before anyone noticed.

"We're 543, to be exact. And you're older? You're too polite to be very young." She looked quizzical.

I gave her a full on belly laugh, my hands gripping my stoumach as it cramped. My laugh didn't go silent, even though I was laughing hard enough for it to.

"I can't honestly say you are the first person to think of me as older," I said between chuckles.

"And why's that?" she asked.

"People tend to think of me as a tad immature." I grinned. My smile has always been a little crooked, and I've been selfcomcious about it, but not with her.

"So how old are you?" Luke asked me.

"Well, you could call me nineteen, but I'm technically 809." I saw their violet eyes go wide.

"People tend ot think of me as a tad immature." He grinned. It was a little, crooked, but helped him prove his point. It was kind of cute.

"So how old are you?" Luke asked him.

"Well, you could call me 19, but i'm technically 809." He replied.

I felt my eyes widen. We hadn't met many people who were that old.

"I didn't know werewolves could live to be that old," Luke said. "Or at least, not be that old and still look 19," He added.
