"Sarah, wake up," Diana whispered from the seat to my immediate left. I raised my head groggily, letting out a grunt as I picked up my pencil and pretended to do what I was supposed to be doing, as if I actually knew what that was. The only thing that got me through the class each day was my placement in the back of the room and my best friend, really my only friend, seated next to me.

I could feel each tick of the clock as the end of class slowly crept up on us. As soon as the clock struck 10:22, I threw my seat back, bolting to the door and running out into the hallway.

"Class has not been dismissed yet, Sarah!" my horrible teacher called after me, but I was too far away for her to do anything and just kept running. The six minutes between classes were precious; not a single second of it could be spent in that wretched classroom. By the time the bell had rung to switch classes, I had already made it to the gym locker room, slipping in and changing before anyone else had gotten there and making my way to the gymnasium, beating even the teacher there. The silence there was comforting, the only time throughout the day where I could just breathe.

"Late night?" Diana asked as she walked into the gym.

"Always," I responded with a heavy sigh, throwing my back against the gym wall and sinking to the floor as Diana sat down next to me. The two of us have been thrown together last year for a group project in English and immediately bonded over our outcast status. I was never a big fan of people my age, and Diana hadn't been treated the same since middle school when she had a panic attack right before the school went into lockdown when a suspicious character appeared around the neighborhood. Later news revealed that he had robbed a bank and shot himself in a building down the street from the school after hiding the money in a secret location, and the timing of his death and Diana's mental breakdown had been ominous to say the least, and many parents refused to let their children associate with her.

The gym had started to fill with the rest of our classmates by now, the guys throwing basketballs around with terrible aim and almost hitting several bystanders, and the girls gossiping about who said what to whom. Several minutes passed, and there was no sign of the coach, which normally wouldn't have been troubling, but something felt off today. I stood up and walked out into the hallway, glancing around corners and checking nearby rooms for any sign of the coach, but she was nowhere to be found. Finally, I went back into the gym to tell Diana, but something was not right.

"Diana, you OK?" I asked, staring Diana directly in the eye. She had started hyperventilating and other people in the gym were beginning to stare. "What are you looking at?" I snapped at a group of watchers, causing them to go back to their own conversation. Diana hadn't said a word since I had gotten back, and she was starting to worry me. She looked around frantically, as if expecting to find something specific, and grabbed my arm, gripping my wrist with enough force to snap a pencil.

"Run," she whispered to me. I stared at her, not entirely sure what I should do. "Run!" she repeated much louder, drawing the attention of everyone left in the gym. I didn't want to leave her while she was in this state, but the look in her eyes was so real and scared, that I felt I owed it to her to do as she said. Speed-walking down the hallway, I made my way back to the locker room, hoping that if I stayed there for a few minutes and returned, Diana would be back to normal.

"She's never going to live this down," I mumbled to myself frustratedly, knowing that this act of insanity certainly would not help her position in the school hierarchy. I sat down on a bench in the locker room, taking advantage of the extra silence and taking in several deep breaths. After what felt like an hour had passed, I looked up at the clock, only to find out it had barely been a minute.

From the back of the locker room, I heard the door fling open and thought I should check. Maybe Diana had recovered and was coming to get me. Maybe a teacher finally showed up and wanted to get everyone back in order. I peaked my head behind the corner, trying to see the front of the locker room, but all I saw was a gun, tightly gripped in a woman's hand. Quickly getting out of sight, I sealed my lips and slowed my breathing, making as little noise as humanly possible. The woman continued down the locker room, the footsteps gradually getting louder as she made her way in my direction. When she finally turned the corner and spotted me, I summoned all the courage I had, jumping out of her way and then tackling her to the ground. The gun flew out of her hand as we both crashed into the floor, so both of us took off for her. Knowing I wouldn't be able to get there before, I made a sudden path change, bolting through the back exit of the locker room and entering the girl's bathroom.

I checked all the stalls, trying to find someone to help me out, but there was no one in sight. I was on my own. I put the seat down in one of the stalls, hopping up so that my feet could not be seen from below, and closing the door enough so that I could not be immediately seen, but that the door could still be opened. As the footsteps neared, I prepared myself, planning to lunge at the woman and, this time, successfully take her gun.

"Sorry about this," she said as she entered the bathroom, going down the line and kicking the stall doors in. As she slowly made her way to the my stall, the very last, I readied my feet, but the Fates were not on my side. As the door flung open to the stall, a gunshot went off. My vision started to get shaky and blurry and all I could hear was a piercing, ringing noise. As the woman slipped her gun back into her jacket, I slipped out of consciousness, my vision going completely black.

And that's the story of the day I died.
